day 210 | video
[ the art of disguise is not merely physical. it runs on many layers, and the ability to replicate and manipulate emotions is just as important as the way one looks. it all comes in handy, though, especially when you're a world-renowned criminal mastermind in a new place with new people and you need to get your bearings.

this is why the residents of marina will be finding themselves in the company of richard brook, the fretful out-of-work actor, rather than the criminal mastermind that is james moriarty. it's only practical, after all; it would be absolutely ridiculous for everyone to be aware of his capabilities right off the bat.

the rumpled-looking man showing on the video feed is rather obviously distressed. he seems more fearful than angry, however -- his voice wavers as he mutters to himself, very quietly.
]

...torture? Murder? Really, I can't --

[ he pauses, and takes a deep breath. ]

I thought we'd been through all this once already. I'm innocent. I didn't do any of those horrible things, not a single one -- all I did was look the part. I swear, I'm being honest, I'll tell you everything all over again if I need to.

[ that tremor isn't just in his voice, now. he's shaking. ]

You've got the wrong man. This is a mistake. Please, just let me go home.

[ rich offers up a small smile, looking more relaxed than he has for his past few responses. ]

Thank you. It's nice to know there are people here willing to help.

[ to be cliche: jim feels like this is taking candy from a baby. he's gotten a few suspicious responses, yes, but otherwise, he's playing everyone just as expected. ]

Of course. We really need to be there for each other especially in a place like this. Is there anything I can do now? You must have questions.

I'm getting a lot of my questions answered already, but I appreciate the offer. If there's anything you think I need to know, though, feel free to share.

Oh, many things I suppose. I could start with the one I know the most about though. It might be a little early to think of it, but has anyone mentioned the school to you?

The education center? Briefly. I thought it sounded more like a library than a school.

Well, there is a library too and there are tools for solo study at the education center, but there is also an inmate-run school [Euphie-run] where people can teach classes and take them.

Sounds like a fair deal of resources.

What kind of classes are there? Are they entirely open?

[ and finally, something both rich and jim would agree on, if they were actually separate entities: this all sounds like a good way to pass the time. any source of information is always worth taking a look at. ]

[She's pleased he seems interested. It is something special to her.] Yes, they're open. Anyone can take them. You can also just go and try them out. If it's not for you there's no pressure to return.

There will be a course listing in the welcome basket you get tomorrow morning, but there are all sorts of things you might not expect like toxicology and criminology and cooking.

Got it.

[ he laughs a bit, seeming much more relaxed. ]

Criminology in a prison? ...wow, I'm asking a lot of "in a prison" questions.

It does feel that way sometimes. I think eventually you get over the surprise of it, though you always see it again on days like this when people find it for the first time. But, yes, criminology in prison. I think our teacher for it is very capable. He's a doctor.

It's something I'm sure I'll have to check out. After all, got to keep myself occupied, yeah? You've been very helpful -- thank you for all this.

I really did very little. Besides, it's important for us to help one another. It will take time to adjust, but if there is anything I can do for you in the future, please let me know.
