DAY 209 | vi ( audio ) → open.
We need a Sadie Hawkins. [ seemingly unprompted, but it's been on her mind for a while now. something wholesome and fun that everyone can participate in without pesky age requirements or being weary of stepping foot in a bar or a vampire-owned establishment. ] It's a dance - not as formal as prom, but there's usually a theme of some kind involved. For example, my sorority at Yale was planning on holding a Phantom themed Sadie Hawkins towards the end of the fall semester. Our theme will definitely not be anything involving Andrew Lloyd Webber. Rebekah and I will be working out those details - theme, where, when...

[ because her original vampire bestie is the obvious choice for partner in dance planning crime. ]

Another thing: the girls usually do the asking for a Sadie Hawkins. None of this misogynistic nonsense of waiting for a guy who's never going to notice you to ask you to go to the dance with him. You get to make him sweat and worry that no-one's going to ask him and he'll be forced to go stag. But, since I know not everyone is of the heterosexual persuasion here, I say interpret the tradition as it applies to you. If you're a boy who likes boys, ask a boy. You don't have to go with a girl if that's not who you are. This should be something fun for us, not anything that makes people feel uncomfortable.

[ it's not her fault you have control issues or pissed off your girlfriend. let her have some teenage young adult normalcy, eric. ]

Really.

[that would assume that he knew anything about young adult normalcy in the twenty-first century]

Then I'll assume there's someone you're tired of waiting on to ask you out.

...what?

[ for once in her life, this isn't about a guy. she just wants something normal. ]

You've chosen an activity in which you must take the initiative if you wish to go to the dance with someone. I assume it's because you're tired of waiting for someone to ask you out.

Wow, no. You're totally misunderstanding me here. I want to have a dance, because I like dances and a Sadie Hawkins hasn't been done before. Not here, anyway. Why are you even bothered? You have a girlfriend.

I wouldn't say that I'm bothered. [Perpetually cranky on the other hand...] When I was human, dances were something done around a fire usually in celebration of something. The entire tribe went and if you were moved to dance with someone, you did so. There was no such thing as a 'date' or 'asking'.

[Could it be that he's trying to understand human culture from a different point of view than he's accustomed to?]

Then I guess this is your opportunity to try something new and get with the modern program. You can't tell me that you and Sookie haven't been on a date, Eric.

Not as many as you might think. Things are...complicated at home.

There are a surprising number of creatures and people who want to eat Sookie. Dates generally involved me giving her my blood in order to heal her from whatever happend to try and kill her that evening. Occasionally we'd venture out to some sort of affair that had to do with vampire business. There was those few weeks that I had amnesia, but I was confined to the house as no one was supposed to know I was alive.

Things are...complicated.

Vampire business. You make it sound like you're some vampire government agent or something. Also, the blood sharing thing is kind of gross.

I am a part of the Vampire Authority which governs vampire society, so in a way you're not far off.

What's the saying? Don't knock it until you've tried it. Besides, in most cases it is done to heal Sookie. My blood can take care of most injuries outside of death.

So, what? You're like Louisiana's vampire state senator or something?

...but to do that, people have to... drink it, right? That whole reverse vampirism deal-- I mean, I get it and I'm trying to be respectful of what I'm attempting to look at as a different set of customs, but it all sounds really, really gross. No offense.

More like a congressman. We've a king as well.

Yes, indeed they do. No offense taken. It's something that takes some getting used to. I take that to mean if you're dying, you'd rather me let you die?
