Day 205 [Action | OTA]
[If it weren't for Aidan, Helix may never have come outside today at all. But injured boyfriends are very convincing when it comes to going grocery shopping with a bum wrist… that was pretty much his fault. Also, don't be fooled, Helix hides his injuries well, but he got into a scuffle too, he might walk with a slight limp.

So you can catch Helix in sectors 4, 2 or 0 and probably some places between? (If you want to plot elsewhere I'm cool with that)
]

((ooc: I am totally up for anyone and everyone tagging Helix, even if it's for non-smoochie times. State if you want a megabot in the title line thanks!))

So why fight so hard to try and get out? It's not like this place is actually torturing us.

[Well... a few of the things that happened sucked, but all in all this place is a vacation in comparison to how it COULD be.]

I dont understand why everyone is so dead set to get out when there is no way out. And as far as "continuing your work" or "Finishing" something back home you were stolen from. There is a DOUBLE of all of us doing just that.

[ There's a bit of a bitter smile at that. Sure, it would be easy to just give up and accept that they're stuck here but Reid is not the kind of guy who can do that, as much as he'd want to at times. ]

There's no guarantee of that. [ Pause. ] I want to see my mom again. The rest of my team... my family. We all have something we want to go back to and even if there is a clone to fill our place... that's not going to make things any better for us.

I can't just give up.

Not all of us have something to go back to. And if Kitty can't go with you then she either has to stay here, assuming we have that choice if you guys find a way out, or she dies.

Have all of you considered that? If the way out is so impossible, what happens if you do find it but that means it sends everyone back? Not all of us WANT to go back, or CAN go back. Would you still choose freedom if it meant sentencing others to death?

Of course we have, but until we know what we're even dealing with it's pointless to consider the possible outcomes. Kitty is just as aware of that as the rest of us — she's the one leading the group looking for a way back after all.

Would you sentence those of us that want to go home to a lifetime in prison, just because no one cared enough to discover what options we do have?

Not always.

Think about it. It's impossible to find a way out. So what if figuring it out means you've condemned the other half. That IS a possibility. That just by pushing for this, fighting and poking around where you don't belong you upset the balance of everything and condemn everyone else who NEEDS to exist here.

There is a huge risk that by finding a way out, it destroys our ability to stay here.

It's like messing with chemicals. You could blow something up by just trying it out to see what it does.

Or you could discover polonium.

Look, I understand what you're getting at but it's not that black and white. Right now we're gathering information, evidence that could point us in any direction and as far as I'm concerned, we're not going to do a single thing unless we know that our actions won't endanger the rest of the prisoners. We're exploring our options, not pushing buttons all willy-nilly in the hopes that something good will happen and I really hope that's not the impression you've gotten of the work we do.

Are you really happy having your whole life dictated by the wardens? Even if we don't find a way out, we could achieve autonomy and then no one would be punished for getting injured again. [ Yep, he saw that announcement. ]

You really think you can trust everyone to trust you? To not go ahead and do something themselves without thinking? You expose a way out and someone's going to take it. You have so many members and I'm willing to be there are a few that wouldn't think twice about getting what they feel is "right" instead of waiting.

[See also Lacus when she gets determined about what she feels is the right thing.

He outright laughs at that last comment damn near spilling his coffee.
]

Are you serious right now? I've had my whole life dictated and you think a few rules and bogus charges will ruffle my feathers enough for me to want to go home? Please.

You people. I will never understand it. You think it's so hellish here when it's a fucking vacation by normal standards. This place isn't a prison. Call it a cage if you want, that's closer to the truth. An enclosure like at the zoo.

Yet you still want to run crying home to your mommies. [Shaking his head and sipping his drink.]

[ He falls silent at that. Stunned. Was this really what Helix thought that he believed? That he didn't know just how good they had it? Hell, his own life was far from hellish but this was still close to paradise in comparison. Freedom, safety... but no room for growth. No room to make the world a better place, outside their tiny little bubble. A wonderful cage that builds for acceptance and compliance and lethargy. An easy life without work or challenges or any of the things that make them human.

The cowards way out, if you asked Reid. The garden of eden that you'd see in sci-fi shows and that always turned out to be the last nail in the coffin of progress. A utopia that is only made possible because someone else is in charge — free of responsibility, locked from any pursuits of societal betterment.

He sets his cup down on the table, pushing it forward an inch or so. ]

...You really haven't understood a thing, have you? [ Head bowed. Clearly hurt, clearly disappointed in how Helix managed to miss the point completely. He really thought he was smarter than this... more empathic maybe. That he had some grasp of seeing more than his own situation and then project his world view onto everyone else. Maybe not. ]

[They can build and work and change and challenge all they want here, people just have to do it and accept that that is the only way things will get better. But only a select few even try. Because everyone is so stuck on wanting to leave and being stubborn brats, kicking and screaming and not accepting they are trapped for the long haul.

There's plenty of room for that idyllic view of "making the world a better place" in the prison too. The Wardens let them build and shape their surroundings. They can do whatever they want within reason. Many are just too lazy to take it. Instead they blame the wardens for keeping them caged so they "can't do anything."

Helix has never believed in heroes. Never saw society better itself. He saw the corruption. He saw evil hiding behind the masks of people that should have been protecting everyone. He saw the manipulation and just how currency had power. He saw the cries of those who figured it out get silence. Hell... in most cases he helped.

He knew it was pointless to keep hope for a better world, or worlds in his case. There would always be war and corruption and death. No one had the power they thought they had to make everyone happy. It's impossible.

He looks confused when it appears Reid is hurt. Brow furrowing further when he's asked if he even understands.
]

What are you talking about?

[ He shifts in his seat. Swallows in an attempt to work out the insult from his voice, because he really does feel insulted. Maybe he's been projecting just as much as Helix to the point where he's lost track of the boy's life experiences and how they've shaped him. Maybe he forgot for just a moment that you can't discuss things on a logical, scientific level with just anyone without getting emotions involved. ]

...It's not about it being terrible here. Believe me, I know how good we've got it and I think most people would agree that we're lucky. It could be so much worse. [ Pause. He swallows again. ] In the end it's about choice. About having a free will, being in some kind of control of our own destiny. I don't know about you, but I don't trust the wardens to maintain life support if the project isn't worth continuing. They've already shut down one dome, haven't they? Maybe next time they won't bother with transferring us.

It's not about the Defense Force either. We're just a group of people working together for a common goal and the individuals you're talking about, that would take matters into their own hands? They would do so regardless of what we find. We've already had incidents where inhabitants — not members of the DF, I might add — endangered the safety of the entire dome for their own personal gain. It'll happen whether we continue our research or not.

In the end... it's about knowing without a doubt that we have no other option than to stay here. That's what I want to know. Need to know. Maybe you're happier living in a zoo enclosure, but I'm not. Not if I have a choice.

First off, I've never had control of my life. I may have wrestled freedom from my guardian on a day to day basis but in the end all he had to do was yank on my leash. I wouldn't know anything about controlling my destiny or whatever the fuck it is you think you're doing.

Secondly, I, like probably several others, don't have a choice. It's here or no where.

Sure, I won't die if I go home. But I'll lose everything. I'll be sent to a shittier prison for who knows how long and I'll probably lose Aidan. I may never see him again. For all I know HE might die without me because I can't protect him from Jethro.

Helix... could you actually listen to what I'm saying? I have no intention of sending everyone home. That's the last thing I want to do. If it comes down to all or nothing then there's no question about it as far as I'm concerned — we're all staying. I just want to know without a doubt that there is no other option out there.

You can't hold me responsible for what others might do any more than you can blame me for what your guardian did to you. If we don't investigate it, someone else will. At least this way, someone has the right intentions.

I am listening. I'm just making my intentions clear. I will stand in the way of anyone trying to fuck with my life.

[He's not necessarily saying he'll stop Reid, or the Defense Force, but he will try to get in the way if it gets risky for ANYONE trying to figure things out.]

Logically the system that brings us here is probably only built one-way. It's a life-time sentence, they put us to sleep when something goes wrong, why build it with a way out? I don't think it's an option. From one facility to another sure, but not back to your home planet.

It's not only something that transports several beings from one world to another but different times. I don't know about your world but mine hasn't figured out time travel. And we can hop galaxies.

So dimensions, alternate universes, worlds or times. That's some insanely complicated stuff and I don't know many here who would know how to work with it, let alone reverse engineer it, which would be your only shot.

So logically speaking, I don't believe there is a way out.

[ He listens in silence, expression not really revealing much of what's going through his head. Einstein's law of relativity, quantum mechanics, the Copenhagen interpretation, the fact that he knows at least one person in the dome that really can mess around with timey-wimey wibbly-wobbly stuff like others deal with the commute to work.

It's far from impossible. They have the resources, all they need is a way in. At least, that's what he believes. ]

Alright. [ A soft sigh. ] I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm not going to try and change your mind and nothing you say will change mine.

[Rolls his eyes and sighing softly.]

Fine. Whatever.

[ Of course. Maybe Reid knows something he doesn't, but it's kind of annoying when people treat this stuff like it's so fucking simple to figure out. He may not be the best of the best with technology and things like this like his people usually are, but it's still something just naturally a part of him to understand.

Whatever. DF bullshit, that's all he can think. Let them tinker all they want he can at least trust Reid not to let them do anything stupid.

He gets up and goes to the counter to get another cup of coffee, returning with a cup of fruit to nibble. For now he's just going to sit in silence and cool off from their heated discussion.

[ Reid issues a weary sigh as soon as Helix is out of earshot, leaning back into the armchair. It's not always easy to defend what you think is the right course of action, even less so when you practically live door to door with the people you're defending it against. Back home, the criticism the BAU got never really affected their personal lives. Here, it can be devastating.

Once Helix is back, he allows a stretch of silence to pass before jumping to a new topic. ]

So... what happened? [ Limpy leg and an assault charge. Don't think you can get away with this one, Mister. ]

[Considering the discussion they were just having he's confused by that question for a second. Though, he's told him everything about why he wouldn't want to go home. Heck he's pretty sure there isn't anything about his life story Reid DOESN'T know by now. Instead of thinking too hard on the possibilities... Mostly cause he's still too annoyed to care to think that hard... he furrows his brows and asks.]

Oh. Well... it's only kind of a nagging thing...

[Technically that's a yes, but he doesn't consider it pain. Hurt to Helix is not being able to walk on it at all.]

I fought an Armored Aardvark in Sector 6 to test a theory. My monitor betrayed me so the effort was lost.

At least I managed to injure the damn thing and work out some frustration.
