I've been convicted of a murder that I didn't commit. And I literally mean an actual murder I didn't commit -- it's not something back home that I'm just too chickenshit to fess up to.

And the thing is, Veridical stuck this D/s collar on me, so at first I thought it was just making up some excuse to avoid admitting it was jealous that I'm already in a relationship. But then it turned out I'm not the only one being punished.

So who all out there has to deal with this bullshit today?

Sounds like you got a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sucks to be you. Maybe you should catch whoever did it and then they can't blame you for it.

I'm not interested in playing detective. I suspect whoever really did it is also being punished, and that's good enough.

Being forced to wear a collar and paint shit is a fair trade-off for what I get out of it, anyway.

Talk about keeping it positive. What are you getting out of being punished?

I've learned something interesting. [ He's leaving it at that. ]

Huh. Information's gotta be good for that. Backhanded kind of luck, but if it works for ya, enjoy it. This kind of stuff happen to you a lot?

Information is power.

Getting punished? Yeah, it's a regular occurrence for me. Generally it's for stuff I actually did, though, so this is new.

[He laughs.] The justice system is all about punishing people for things they didn't do. And letting off the real bad guys unless you find something they can't weasel out of.

I meant around here. Before I got dragged into this wacky carnival of transdimensional justice I'd never had any contact with a judicial system.

Nope. Post-apocalyptic wasteland.

[ Well, Derse had laws, but he was pretty good about keeping a low profile there. ]

Man, that sounds rough. I live in Gotham and it's not even that bad there. Hasn't gotten to Apocalyptic levels yet.

Well, every world probably sucks in its own unique way.

You've got that right. [He shrugs.] And we're young, we put up with that kind suck better than adults. [Completely serious here. Adults fall in with the depravity so much faster than young people do, he thinks.]

You've never been around adults before either? Did you live in a box? [Serious question even if he completely lacks tact while asking it.]

My friend. The one other human who was alive. We're not related.

...it's a really long story. Maybe I'll write a pamphlet on it someday, since people keep trying to socialize by asking where I'm from and it turns into this federal issue.

It sounds kind of crazy, but most places do around here. Makes me wonder where the wardens are finding people.

Strange situations probably breed more criminals than average suburban whitebread life.

Haha, yeah, Gotham is the least "suburby" place I can think of. It's not so bad though once I you get used to it.
