day 184 :: action / voice :: open
[In Sector 0 stands a formidable man who despite his age is in excellent health and despite the anonymity of the orange jumpsuit still exudes leadership, wit, intelligence and demands respect without his even saying a word. He isn’t in a hurry to get anywhere. Clothing is unimportant as long as he has some. Food isn’t an immediate necessity.

He stands there calmly, taking in his surroundings as he absorbs and attempts to understand all the information he has been given. Anyone passing by is free to notice him. However, having little to no trouble deciphering the technology of the headset unit, he does finally speak over the network.

His voice is calm, but not without purpose.
] I’m Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise. It seems that I’ve been taken from my ship and... imprisoned here with the rest of you. As we all seem to find ourselves in a similar situation, I hoped a number of you might find the time to answer a number of questions.

First. Under whose authority do Veridical and Conscienti imprison their inmates in MarinaNova Asylum?

Second, on what planet does the Saylar Ocean exist?

Third, and I suppose last but not least for now, what is the approximate length of time in which one remains here within the dome for this… decidedly contrived attempt at rehabilitation?

[There is a pause here, as he considers whether or not to tack on another question here. There are just so many things to ask and Jean-Luc is known for being too curious for his own good. Finally, he decides against it.] Any explanation to any of these questions would be of great help. Thank you.

That— [ No! No awkward squeaks! Keep it together! ] That depends on where you are? I'm in Sector 2 right now, so if you're close by we could meet at the library..?

As I am in Sector Zero, according to this map, I can get anywhere fairly quickly and easily. And I must admit some curiosity at seeing what a library in a place such as this might hold. I am heading in that direction now.

Okay... good. [ Breathe, profiler. No, seriously. Breathe.] I'll meet you at the library entrance.

[Jean-Luc appears moments later looking none the worse despite the bright orange jumpsuit. In fact, he looks every bit in control of the situation and even eager to understand more of this place. He approaches Reid, waiting to see what kind of greeting he might give so that he might diplomatically copy it.]

You must be Doctor Reid.

[ In the time that passed between the end of their conversation and now, Reid has done everything in his power to calm himself down. If he can come face-to-face with serial killers on a near-daily basis, he can do it with one of his childhood heroes. Right? Right.

Still, he flinches when that familiar voice calls his name, prompting him to turn around. There is a beat when his composure threatens to falter, but he keeps himself together well enough. Professional, despite the tremble in his hand as he offers it for a handshake.]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir.

[Jean-Luc looks down to that offered hand and grasps it in a firm handshake, smiling back up to Reid at the gesture that is somewhat outdated and yet still occasionally, very rarely used, in his time.]

Yes, a pleasure. Tell me, do you frequent this library? It must hold any number of wonders what with the collection of inmates from different time and space.

[ Blame nerves. Normally he might've thought to do something more appropriate, but he's just happy that he's still somewhat coherent here.]

I do — there's no history section, but on the other hand the contents of the books change every few days or so. There's no risk of running out.

[He looks surprised at that, both the lack of a history section, which would have been very helpful, and the fact that the books change.]

A history section could have been most helpful. What happens if you're in midst of a good book and the library opts to change them? Are you allowed to continue the book you're working through?

I, uh... I haven't actually encountered that problem myself yet? [ Reading speed. Right.] I do think you can ask for an extension or even a permanent copy of a specific book, should you want to.

A permanent copy of some novels would not go amiss; the classics or a good mystery novel or two. [He starts up the steps into the library.] Shall we?

[Inside the library, Jean-Luc pauses and looks up and around at the books. He draws in a deep breath and looks thoroughly entranced as if it's been a long while since he's been inside an actual library. And it has been a long while.]

Doctor Reid, there are some things that can never ever be replicated or hologramed into an existence in a way in which they could ever resemble the real thing. I must say that a library is one of them.

[ Despite his heart hammering wildly out of sheer "This is the coolest day ever!" Reid remains relatively calm, letting the other take his time to take in the library. The statement brings out a smile.]

Agreed. I've never really liked all the digitalization... you lose a lot of the experience in the process, even though it can be practical.

Yes there is indeed something about cracking open a tangible book, turning a page with care, the feel of a weathered spine and the scent that comes with age. Poetry in motion.

Oh, [It’s said with a bit of an amused chuckle in it.] I assure you that very few can be seen without their electronic tablets in my time. And I myself succumb to them if just because actual books are… bulky. They take up space on a starship. I have a few though and they are valuable treasures to me.

[He steps further into the prison, another deep breath of appreciation for it all. And then he’s back to business.] Shall we find a place to sit and speak, Doctor?

[ It's safe to say that he's just soaking up the experience here, hanging onto every word and doing his best to keep his pulse under control. Probably never going to get used to the crazy opportunities Marina provides. ]

Of course — this way. There are some tables over there that will give us relative privacy.

[Making his way to the table in question, Jean-Luc makes several stops if just to check out a book on the end of a shelf or look over someone’s shoulder to see what they might be reading. But eventually he does make it over to a table where he pulls out a chair and takes a seat.]

Perhaps we could start with this Investigative Team and what they have discovered thus far?

[ He doesn't mind taking his time here, patiently waiting for Jean-Luc to get his fill of the library. Once at the table he takes a seat opposite the other, hands folded on the table in front of him. ]

Well... the team is unfortunately still pretty disorganised. It was founded some time ago but the original leader disappeared before it ever got off the ground — we've only recently reformed it in an official capacity and we've yet to collect our individual research. [ Meaning everything he says from now on is mostly a one-man operation.]

We do have a lot of basic information about the facility itself. Maps, both of this dome and the previous including the underground levels, although those aren't as detailed... basic information about the chemical components of water and air samples, a rough number for the thickness of the dome glass based off estimated water pressure and durability — I could be way off about that one though. Alien materials.

I also have some theories regarding the coming and going of prisoners, but nothing provable yet. There's still a lot we don't know and the wardens don't exactly make it easy to find out more.

Actually I am pleased to be in on the ground floor of such an operation, so to speak, even in its infancy. The better to understand piece by piece as all the information is compiled and organized rather that one large bulk of information. [All to say that Jean-Luc feels more on even footing with the Investigative Team so young in its organization.]

Are these maps viewable to all? And what of the underground facilities? Do we have an idea of what might be housed inside them?

[He considers this.] Once Data is repaired, he'll be joining us. He's quite adept at theorizing himself, you see. He'll be quite helpful.

Anyone can request to have a look, sure... but we haven't made any copies yet. [ And they're hand-drawn. Crudely.] Just one more thing on the long to-do list, I guess.

As for the underground facilities... I didn't spend much time down there, but it was big. Grassland, cattle, buildings... access into the facilities mainframe. Whether this dome has a similar layout or not remains to be seen, but the differences seem to be mainly superficial.

[ And you can bet your anything on that he brightens at the thought of Data joining the team. Best recruitment day ever.]

I would offer to take over making copies of the maps but I must say that even Data finds my artwork lacking. I would have Data himself make a copy of the maps you do have, crude or not. Perhaps he could even clean them up a bit as he did show a flare for artistry aboard the Enterprise.

[He's surprised to hear of the cattle and grasslands and even more buildings beneath this surface.] I suppose we should focus more on the mainframe access than on the cattle and grassland.

[Although he's suddenly been hit with another idea.] Have you ever heard of a tricorder?

That would be... really great, actually. Collecting and copying the existing data should definitely be one of our top priorities at this time.

[ Ohboy, cool it Reid. He straightens up some where he sits, gestures growing a little more animated. ] Of course — it's a handheld device for sensor scanning, data analysis, and recording data.

Data could do such both efficiently and in a timely matter, I assure you. The speeds at which he calculates and absorbs data, or even moves when necessary, is most exemplary.

[And here is where he leans in and informs Reid of a plan he's been hatching.] I believe between Data, Seven and myself we could fashion a tricorder were we able to obtain the right materials.
