Bored. Bored. Bored.

I swear, set aside the fancy shmancy castle and I'm not really any better off than I was back home. Well, aside from Uhura. At least someone here was willing to take me in. But I'm still little. Adults like the little ones. I have hope.

So...besides the seriously useless school, what do people do around here? I think I've wandered around aimlessly enough times until the corridors of this place start lookin' the same. And I hate doin' homework. I'm half-in' it anyway since it's not like they'll transfer back home. At least I'm not failin'.

But seriously, what do you guys do all day?

Boring adult stuff.

But seriously, if you want to go into the city to do something, just let me know. I'll be around during the evenings for a little while until I'm on call, then my schedule might be a little more confusing. But until then, there are parks, after school classes for... whatever you like. There's the magical district, too. That might interest you.

Have you met the other children here yet?

Sounds...fun.

I thought this city would just be like any other city. I've gone to the school, Carey's, and the castle. That's really about it. But, what do you mean by magical district?

Not really. I've talked to Anakin, but that's it. Aside from the kids at school. None of them really talk to me all that much. Why does no one ever like me?

Can be if you're doing what you love.

It is, a little bit, but it's also quite different... At least, from Portland. I barely remember New York. The magical district is... magical. It's different. There's a shop for something called Quidditch, supplies and whatnot. There's an apothecary potion shop type of place. There are quite a few people who are magical in their own ways, so they use those shops for supplies that they need, but it's kind of cool to look around even if you're not.

I remember moving schools when I was 12. It's never easy being the new kid. Just give them time. They'll come around.

I thought you just said it was boring.

Magic and monsters. Does this place ever stop with the surprises? What's Quidditch? Maybe I'll go look.

I dunno if they will. OK, I try. Can't promise anythin', but I can at least try if you want me to. Only because it's you who's askin' me to give it time.

I meant it would probably be boring to you. But I enjoy what I do.

It doesn't sound like it. This place has an odd sense of humor sometimes. As for Quidditch... I'm not really sure. You'd probably be better off asking the shop owner than me, but from what I can tell, it's some sort of magical sport played on brooms. But before you go look, make sure you have permission from Uhura.

I think you should. Sometimes... kids can be cruel, and there's nothing you can really do about it except be the better woman. But sometimes, they just need a little time.

Yeah, I don't think I could ever be a cop. I'd probably be bad at it. Especially since I already have a record.

Brooms? So they use the brooms like hockey sticks? Why do I gotta ask if I can go?

Sometimes? Try all the time. Some kids stole my clothes after gym today and hid them. I was late to my last period thanks to it! It's like some stupid new kid prank or somethin'.

You can learn to be good at anything you want if you want it enough, but if cop isn't your thing, don't worry, I won't hold it against you.

I think they fly on them, actually. Magic and all.

That's not okay. Did you tell a teacher? Bullies are... awful. I dealt with my fair share when I was your age. Like I said, it's always hard being the new kid. But you just have to find the others who are in your shoes and hopefully find some friendship that way. And make sure you report those kids so that they don't do that to you again.

Uh Thanks.

Yeah, one of the other minis said somethin' like that just now. That's really weird. What's supportin' ya? What if I fall? This place is weird.

No. If I tell then I'm a nark. And I will never be a nark.

Yeah, sure. I guess I'll just keep an eye out for other kids being picked on. Maybe we can pull somethin' back on the bullies.

It was a joke. Have you thought about what you want to do?

Magic, I would guess. And I'm not sure. Hopefully there are precautions in place to make sure you don't fall. And yeah, this place is very weird.

Or you could save someone else the embarrassment and agony and be a hero. Just think about telling, okay? The next kid that becomes a victim to this might not be as strong as you to be able to handle it for much longer.

That's what I did when I was your age. And I still kind of do today.

Not really, no. Why?

So...question. Can just anyone learn magic?

Bein' a hero is a lot of work.

What do you mean by that? Is this some deep thing about being a cop?

It might help you come up with something to focus on and work toward. But you're just a kid, so take your time.

I have no idea. I would guess probably not as it's probably something that you're born with, but... I'm not an expert. Not even close.

It is, but it's also extremely rewarding.

Uh... not exactly, though it could be. My best friends are people that I've met while helping them against people that wanted to hurt them or while they were helping me against people that wanted to hurt me. And we're hounded and bullied for being friends, but we stand by each other no matter what.

Trust me, I watch TV. Back at the foster home we're supposed to take turns with the TV. But the older kids always shove the younger ones away. But I don't know if I really want to work. I mean, I'm twelve.

Where do you work?

I don't think you legally can work, but that's what I do in part of my time. Unless you wanted to work making crafts like bracelet and crafts and stuff and that's not exactly work.

I work at a place called the Destruction Den. People, like lawyers, who have high stress jobs pay cash to come down and break and smash ceramics or else furniture that we set up.

So, what do you do with all the destroyed stuff after they're done?

Child labor laws. I haven't checked local, but in the US children under 12 can't be employed. Kids between 12 and 16 can be employed in allowed occupations during limited hours with guardian permission. Kids between 16 and 18 may be employed for unlimited hours in non-hazardous occupations. So until you're 18, you probably can't really get a job anyhow outside of a ton of red tape.

Want some of it to try to make crafts or something?

Well, hey, that's on my side. Just gotta see if I can make it past 18 without a job.

Crafts? I'm 12, not 5. I'm just sayin' it's a waste of things that someone without might've been able to use.

You have six years before you have to worry about it. And hey, maybe by then you'll have a job you want to do.

What year are you from? I'm not talking macaroni and glitter. Junk crafts are a big thing that adults do now. Just none of them have seemingly found out about us yet.

Thanks! I just mean back home, adults are more likely to adopt little kids than they are to adopt the teenagers. I'm hopin' maybe since I'm small, even when I turn 13 in December I can pull it off. Someone will take me, right? But I guess it doesn't matter right now. I'm here; and here you took me in. Which, you know, thanks for that. Just let me know if you need me to leave. I keep waiting for you to realize how weird I am like all the other adults and send me back.

Uh...I guess. I do it. But the grades aren't good. You won't be mad, will you? I just don't see the point in it. When am I ever going to use algebra? And what good is it to know about Mark Twain? He's dead anyway, isn't he?

So long as you're here, that's certainly not something you'll have to worry about. And if issues come up where we need to address them, Faith, we will.

I won't get mad at you, but I will expect you to listen. And I think you might be pleasantly surprised by Mark Twain. Did you know he wrote a lot of satire?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]minifirecracker

OK.

What do you mean by listen? I hear ya. Yeah, OK. I guess for you I can try.

What's satire? Is that somethin' to do with this Sawyer kid?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]nyota_uhura
2013-05-05 10:48 pm UTC (link)
Thank you.

Satire is using vices and shortcomings and mocking them with wit as a weapon. It's often used to shame society into improving. Twain mocked society being too stuffy and taking themselves too seriously, or for putting emphasis on the wrong things as important. Have you noticed how Sawyer and Finn both swear, yet they're the ones with good hearts while others are concerned about what people in town think? Sawyer talks to Finn, even though he's an outcast, showing more compassion than others who are talking about the need to be good.

And he honestly thought everyone would be smart enough to see what he was doin' and, you know, change? Did it work? 'Cause from what I saw back home, things are sorta like that even in the '90s.

Not gonna lie, haven't gotten very far in it yet. Sooo...yeah.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]nyota_uhura

I doubt he believed everyone would be smart enough to see it. But I think he probably believed even just a few getting the satire made it worth it. Plus, Tom Sawyer doesn't have most of his satire. He has a lot more books with more satire in it.

Why don't I see if there's a good movie version of it and we can watch it little by little, a chapter's worth at a time after you've read a chapter? The movies usually have differences, but they can be good for helping clear things up when the details get too confusing.

Brooms? You're the second person to mention that brooms can fly. Or are you just pretending to make them fly? Like some sort of imaginary game.

What's a speeder bike?

Well, whatever it is...why don't you just take it anyway? Why let him tell you what to do?

Brooms can fly here. I don't know how because that shouldn't be physically possible. But they do.

I'm sure I could learn. I mean, you can't seem to do magic yet your older self has. Obviously or you would be able to access the Speeder Bike.

I mean, he has to take it out sometime, yeah? What then?

What sort of name is Buffy? Nice to meet you. Can I just call you B? Buffy doesn't quite sound all that can be too easy to mess up.

So you're a friend, then? Are you from where we're from or one she made here? Either way I'm really glad to know I have friends in the future. That someone actually takes me in as an adult too. Despite the hobo-ness.
