Who: Ariadne, open
What: Sketching
When: Saturday August 25, 2012 - evening
Where: Halls near the entrance
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 / Possible language
Status: Open / Incomplete

Ariadne had grabbed a set of watercolor pencils and slipped off, not entirely sure where she was going to sketch. The weather wasn't settled and while she normally wouldn't have minded getting a little wet, so long as she could tuck her sketchpad into her jacket to avoid damage, but with watercolor pencils the idea was to be able to gently use water after to turn the pencil into paint. The effect of one sprinkle could've utterly ruined it. She wanted to stay inside and, while the library was lovely, she had been in there enough; she wanted to find somewhere random and new for a very basic change of scenery.

She finally settled for sitting down against one of the walls near the entrance, to the edge of the hall, with her feet tucked up near her. She had a plain oversized white shirt on over top of a white undershirt, jeans, and worn out sneakers. Her hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail. She didn't figure she would be too big of a distraction or in the way of anyone, but someone seemed to take notice anyhow. She looked up when she heard a noise and met someone's gaze. She, joking, smiled and said, "Hello. Sorry, am I in the way?"

Ariadne smiled up at the boy when he seemed to take her joke seriously. She missed having a younger kid around, on some level. Then again, it may have been Daniel's teenage moods that had her missing the excitable young lad. Declarations of how something was "balls" was a stark contrast to the sprog who had said he was her friend the first time they had talked. He wasn't a bad kid (and he was still a kid,) but it was still tiring at times.

"Nothing to be sorry about." She shifted the sketchpad around completely to show a drawing of a Betta fish. Her focus was on the tail, playing with colors. "And there's -" She swapped the page to another to show a drawing of the front of a house. "They're watercolor pencils, so the look of the drawings will change when I apply water. More like paint."

"I'm Ariadne. What's your name?" Ariadne hadn't been paying the most attention to the network, as of late.

Anakin cocked his head as Ariadne turned the pad around so he could see it. It was a colorful fish with graceful fins that curled around its body. He’d seen pictures of sea creatures in vivid color before, but never in person. And none exactly like the one the young woman was drawing. He wondered if this was an accurate representation or if she was taking liberties as artists were wont to do.

But he paused first to answer her question. This place was odder than the Temple, people didn’t like titles. He had always been used to using titles, and at the Temple they insisted he use the proper title to refer to himself. But people got confused here.

“I’m… Padawan Skywalker.” Probably best to start with the title and then corrected rather than go the other way. “How does that work- er, Miss? Turning from pencil to paint?”

"Skywalker?" Ariadne paused, glancing at the young boy's face to try and place the familiarity with an older existing adult. She knew enough of Star Wars to know that after Anakin, the term 'Padawan' was outdated. That was definitely a term from the new movies. "Are you - Anakin?"

"And, well-" Ariadne sat the sketchpad down on the floor and held up one of the pencils for the boy to see. "This is a watercolor pencil. The lead of the pencil, the inside part, is different. It's a color pigment and the pencil pigment is water soluble. This is a watercolor pad, so the paper is a bit thicker than normal paper. With the little brush, a little water on the brush, and control, it settles like watercolor paint after."

"Does that make sense?" Ariadne wasn't one to underestimate kids. She did know they caught on to a lot more than she would've guessed, but she also knew she used a lot of random terms. She didn't want to confuse him. "And you can just call me 'Ariadne,' if you'd like."

Anakin nodded when she asked his name, he didn’t question how she knew. By now he was used to people just knowing his name and who he was.

He stepped forward as she explained the medium she was using. His eyes also kept flicking down to the blue fish again, something about the lines that curved that captivated his attention.

“It does,” he answered. His hands fingered the hems of his sleeves. He was a tactile sort, always wanting to get his hands on things and see how they feel. His instructors waxed long about how such sensory perceptions were, while useful in some instances, crude compared to the Force. Anakin disagreed, naturally, touching things always made them more real, he understood them more. But he knew it would be undeniably rude to reach out and touch Ariadne’s art work. He kept his hands at his side and relied only on what he could see. “Is that a real type of fish or did you make it up?”

"It's a real type of fish. It's called a 'Siamese fighting fish' or a 'betta fish' and a lot of people keep them as pets. They can't be with any fish with big fins like theirs, though. They're territorial and that's where the 'fighting' part comes in." Ariadne explained with a patient smile.

"If you wanted to, I bet you could find out a lot about them on your phone, or in the library. I'm sure they have a few books." They seemed to have a few books about everything. Still, she had a feeling that he had a certain level of ignorance in relation to art. He was a Jedi trainee, so it wasn't a large leap in logic to think such, anyhow. "They probably have a few books on drawing as well, or I could teach you a bit about it - if you would be interested."

Anakin looked up, catching the description of the fish. That sounded lonely, never being able to be with others because your instincts compelled you to fight all the time. He might not get along with hardly anyone at the Temple, but he couldn’t imagine never being around anyone else. Maybe that’s what it was like being Master Windu?

“You would teach me?” He asked her. An unsolicited offer of instruction happened rarely in Anakin’s life. Perhaps even the last time was Master Qui-Gon’s offer to teach how to be a Jedi. Every offer after that was because he had been thrust into the unwilling care of the Jedi and it was a task they viewed as necessary, not desirous. Needless to say, he found the young woman’s offer too good to be true to trust on face value. He was hesitant.

"If you'd like. You can talk to your older self about it, first, if you'd like. He should know who I am. We've talked a few times." Never mind what about, nor the fact that part of the time they had been stranded in New York while Anakin had been stuck in a Darth Vader costume.

"It's not something you have to do, though you will probably have a bit of art when you go to school. That is - assuming your older self plans to have you go to school here. I'm not sure what grade you would be in. That would depend on age, mostly." Ariadne pointed out politely, turning her sketchpad around and flipping to a blank page. She started to do a quick, easy rainbow of colors. Before too long, she tore the page out and held it out to Anakin. "You can have this. If you want to take your finger and put a dab of water on, you can play with seeing how it does it yourself. It won't go quite as smoothly as with a paintbrush, but it ought to give you something to have a bit of fun with."

Anakin was hesitant to accept the paper from Ariadne, if only because he didn’t know her yet coupled with years of ‘no possessions’ being drilled into him. But she kept it held out to him so he eventually took it from her. Once in his hands he examined it, tipping his head to one side, slightly.

“I’ll think about it,” he said, to answer her offer of teaching him how to draw. He’d never had much of an artistic ability, his talents ran in other directions. But he did like the fish she was drawing and it would be something to do. If no one minded, things seemed to be organized less strictly here than they were at the Temple.

"Okay. It's not something you have to do - it's completely up to you. Just let me know what you decide, okay?" Ariadne said with a nod and a smile, turning her page back to the sketch and perusing to find the proper color again. She imagined at this point, she was probably boring the kid.

"If you want to watch me sketch, you can, or if you have something to do - don't let me keep you." Ariadne's tone was friendly, not wanting the boy to take it as a dismissal. "You ought to see if you can stop into a pet store sometime, just to take a look and see the 'local' animals. They would have this type of fish and a number of others." Ariadne half wondered if there was an aquarium of some sort in the city and made a mental note to check later. She knew there was a zoo, or she thought someone had mentioned it, but she wasn't sure about an aquarium.

“Ya, I’ll let you know,” he said. He was unsure for a variety of reasons. Would his guardians be okay with him doing that? Did he really want to sit and learn how to draw? There was a lot to consider before he gave a definite answer.

“Okay. I’ll… try to find one,” he said, even though he’d been trained to remove that word from his lexicon. At least his instructors had tried to teach him to.

“I should go now,” he said. Though he wouldn’t mind watching Ariadne draw more things, she was very good at it. But he’d been trained to be unobtrusive and to not linger where he shouldn’t. Though he failed at it often, clearly, he did try to follow what his instructors taught him. He did try.
