Derek couldn't believe what had just happened. It definitely hadn't been in the plan, though there hadn't really been a plan. In retrospect, that seemed stupid, but there hadn't been a lot of time to sit around coming up with a plan when there had been a rogue werewolf stalking a bunch of clueless teenagers. Derek had ended up in a fight for his life, and he had come out of it the victor, thankfully, but now he had the dead body of an alpha werewolf lying on the ground before him. There was blood everywhere, including over most of Derek, though he was healing fast.
Must be an alpha thing, he thought with an almost hysterical edge, even in his mind. Kneeling before the dead body in a pool of both of their blood, Derek couldn't take his eyes off the remains of the man. He'd had no choice. The alpha had made it clear that it was kill or be killed, and for a moment there, Derek had been terrified that he was going to die. He had never fought against anyone with that level of desperation and ferocity, and he still couldn't quite believe it had happened.
His eyes were burning red and he couldn't seem to stop it, though he had managed to retract his claws and fangs once the adrenaline began to wear off. The eyes though, they seemed permanently red, reflecting off a nearby blood splattered locker. Laura had said not to move, and Derek took that literally. His hands were shaking and he was terrified about what this meant. His mom was the alpha. Not him. He couldn't be an alpha. It just didn't make sense. He was a beta and that was all he was ever meant to be. Derek's pack meant everything to him. Being a part of something greater than himself, always having people he could rely on and be there for in turn, it was something he had always needed and had never had cause to doubt. And now? Now he had no idea where he stood and it felt like that safety net had been ripped away from him.
Hearing a noise down the hall, Derek looked up sharply, immediately on alert but it was his sister. Derek let out a shaky breath, feeling some part of him relax now that she was here. Laura always knew what to do. The hallway was a mess, just like his life seemed to be right now, and he didn't know what to do about any of it.
"I can't get them to stop," he began, referencing his glowing eyes. His control was brittle and he was just barely keeping it together, which was partly the shock of the situation, but mostly the sudden surge in power that was severely testing his limits. He hoped all of the kids had taken the opportunity to run when they'd had the chance.
