"That would be a stupid thing to do. I have no idea how to be an alpha," Derek replied with a snort of derision. He had never taken any notice of any of the lessons their mother had given Laura, and he was sure they talked often about things that he wasn't privy to and that had never bothered him before. He hadn't needed to know. He knew Laura was going to be a brilliant alpha, even if he didn't want to think about the circumstances that would require her to take over for their mother.
Letting out a slow breath, Derek tried to concentrate on telling Laura what had happened. Just the facts, with no freaking out. "Mom asked me to pick Melly up after her..." he had forgotten what it was their sister was doing at school after hours. Not that it mattered. "After school thing. When I got here, I could smell it. I could smell an alpha here. I went inside and found Melly, gave her my keys and told her to go get Mom. I sent the other kids out too. Why the fuck were there so many kids here so late?" It was a rhetorical question, but one that weighed on him given the responsibility he'd felt when he'd seen them.
"The alpha attacked and it wasn't playing around. It was going to kill me. But something distracted it, I can't remember what, and then there were all these feet running towards us and it ran away. There was a girl in the group, she took away the pain and helped me heal. If it wasn't for her, I'd probably - well, I wouldn't still be healing actually, I'd be dead." He owed her so much, and he hadn't been able to keep her safe. Guilt ate away at him. "I told them all to get away while I distracted it, but before I could do anything, it grabbed Shauna, the girl who healed me, and bit her. Then it attacked me and we fought. The others got away I think, while I was fighting." He was shaking now with the memories. "It was bad, Laura. I...I wasn't sure if I was going to survive it. I'm not even sure how I got the upper hand now. Somehow I got my claws in his throat and...and..." And the result was the blood splattered hallway they'd left behind.
