Elphaba often questioned why the other sisters left the child with her. She knew, somewhere in the back of her mind, that he was hers. That Fiyero was his father. But that was chapter of her life she wasn't willing to revisit. Fiyero was gone, murdered beause of...
No. She wouldn't think of that now. She wouldn't think of it ever. Easier to pretend she'd never known Fiyero, that she'd never loved him. And that line of thought negated this child, this boy called Liir who depended on her for food and shelter. She gave him little more than that, how could she give him more than that when she wished he did not exist? It wasn't the child's fault, but what he represented.
Elphaba sighed and shifted the baby's weight on her hip. He was old enough now to look around, to notice the world around him. If she weren't so opposed to caring for him, she would think it a wonder to watch him discover the world.
Especially when the world around them was not what Elphaba knew. She found herself standing in a very strange looking village. She didn't feel the cold, but shivered just the same. Liir shrieked in her arms. She pulled him close, as if her hands might shield him from the chill. There were people everywhere, strange looking carriages with metal casings and...where were the horses and mules to pull them? The people were dressed oddly and the buildings she could see were nothing like the buildings of Oz.
"Where am I..." she murmured aloud as she held the pale skinned infant against her chest, her hands and face a shock of green compared to the babe in her arms.
