Good day, Refugees of Madison Valley.

I was a bit confused upon my arrival earlier today, so I thought it only right that I should greet you properly now that I am at least slightly more settled.

I am Dr. Marius Black. I'm an Oxford-trained physician, currently serving as a medic with the Durham Light Infantry near the town of Arras, France - currently being May, 1940.

I have had a long discussion with Miss Mason about your medical situation here, and I wish to offer my services to any and all refugees who may be in need. There may be something more formal set up in the future, but for now I will be glad to make house calls, and do what I can to soothe your minds and bodies.

Again, I greet you all, and may peace find you in this place.

A medic! There's a fine thing, and one this community's right in need of.

Long days and pleasant nights to you, sai. I'm Cuthbert Allgood, son of Robert, of Gilead in New Canaan.

A pleasure, Mr. Allgood. I'm afraid I don't know where Gilead is, although it sounds as if it could be in Palestine.

Palestine? Was there a place by that name in one of the Outer Baronies - no, not quite. It's not the place you may be thinking of, say sorry. I'm a walk-in between worlds here and my geography won't be alike to yours.

Ah yes, different worlds. It is an easy thing to forget, although the names of your world are familiar to me, albeit apparently different in at least some ways.

Familiar, say true? You've a city called Gilead in your Palestine, then? If that's the truth of it, I'll have to look into the matter! It'd be perfect peculiar.

You said that you're from France? Like Cesare's wife.

In that area, yes. The Middle East. It's an ancient place, from the Christian Holy Book. I don't consider myself a Christian, but I've heard the name many places.

For instance, Jeremiah 8:22: "Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?"

There's a hymn by John Newton, which in part mentions your world:

There is balm in Gilead,
To make the wounded whole ;
There's power enough in heaven,
To cure a sin-sick soul.

Which is the same idea the poet Edgar Allen Poe alludes to in The Raven:

"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!—prophet still, if bird or devil!— Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted,
on this desert land enchanted—
On this home by Horror haunted—tell me truly, I implore—
Is there—is there balm in Gilead?—tell me—tell me, I implore!"
Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

Now it may be a bit of nonsense to you, but the name of your home is, indeed, familiar to me.

Songs and poems and holy books. Out of long ago, it's almost turnabout like a wheel, isn't it just?

Aye, well, I'm no Christian either I'm a proper infidel as Cesare would see it but I know of the holy book of the Man Jesus. To have the name of Gilead writ there is an interesting sort of puzzle. Mayhap only coincidence, one place and another sharing a name, or harmless carry-over, but mayhap not.

Thankee-sai for the sharing of such words! Balm in Gilead, isn't that something? And it'd be a mistake to take such things for perfect literal. Gilead at home, it's the center of things, aye? The capital of all the Inner Baronies, as it stands, and a beacon of civilization even in troubled times. Balm in Gilead, just so. I'll have to think on it and tell Roland; it's not the Tower but it's something.

Indeed, it sounds like your Gilead is its own sort of balm, a balm to the world, if it stands as a beacon against the darkness.

It is quite interesting to me that the intersecting worlds have such similarities. There are things such as this, such as Gilead, but also the things that we tend to overlook, because they are so familiar to us.

For instance, everyone here seems to be hominid. Mammalian. Human, even. Surely in a thousand worlds there are more things than this.

Aye, you see it well enough, say true.

There are similarities between the worlds, things...bleeding through, that ought not to. It's a sign that the Beams whole structure of it isn't as it should be. Too many worlds moved on, zombies and muties and terrible wars. There are some that still hold, though. And most of the carry-over between worlds as I've seen it is...twisted, in a way? But harmless, for all that.

Not everyone here is human in the usual sense, mark it. And there are a few - have you not seen the blue people, Jake and Neytiri? They're not human at all.

Is that so? I shall have to look around more closely, then.

I come from a terrible war, as well. And forgive me, I forgot to answer your question earlier, but I am from London, not from France. I am a medic with a the Durham Light Infantry, on the front of that war. We're fighting a terrible enemy, and the outcome looks bleak, although I am told that we win.

Do you know why things are not as they should be? Is that, perhaps, why we are here? A weak point in...reality?

You've come direct from war, say sorry for it. There's war at home as well, and well I describe it that way but was there ever a war that we wouldn't say was terrible? If we stand for the White, for protecting innocent folk and looking to bring about peace, then that - it's proper purpose, say true.

Only you're from London there are plenty here from London, and Georgia's Mahir is, and Cassi

Cassi Black.

I'm perfect glad that you've had the news that your war will be won. That's a comfort to all of us who care for the stability of the worlds. There's a weak point, aye, there must be, and those who would make it weaker, with discord and dark magics, but in which world that originates I couldn't say. I'm not so informed on the matter as I ought to be. I was going to talk to Vannay but with everything

Cry your pardon, sai, for the peculiar question, but you're Marius Black of London, do you know a girl named Cassiopeia?

All war is terrible, it's true enough. Although I think those who don't fight are unable to realize how terrible. The White?

Cassiopeia Black is my sister

There are many Blacks in London, Mr. Allgood.

Just so, they don't realize, only the truth on the matter is that it's better they don't realize. I'd not have the war come to them, those in need of protection.

The White is only our name at home for what I spoke to you of, preserving what's good and right and upholding civilization. I'm for Gilead and for the Affiliation, the alliance of folk who still stand for the White in my world.

I've not been to London. Not that I don't reckon it's a fine place but my travel plans have been a little...limited of late! You don't know her, not to worry, I only thought I'd ask.

Ah, then it's a good thing to be for, to be sure. The path of good is not often easy, I think in truth that it is far easier to be bad.

Yes, I am sorry I cannot answer your question as you'd surely like to have it answered.

Easier? Mayhap to some, but not to any man with a conscience to trouble him. There are few that I don't think have at least the capacity for goodness.

Nay, I wasn't looking for any particular answer, say true. I was only curious.

In the future, no doubt. I've already informed Miss Mason of a cat allergy. I have a severe reaction, though I've obtained an EpiPen.

I neglected to mention I have asthma.

If you have frequent trouble with your asthma, I know of several treatments that can ease your symptoms. Is it a constant condition, or do you have seasonal peaks?

In my time, the best way was the injection I spoke of above. But I am working to update my knowledge, and I will let you know if I come across anything. In the meantime, try not to overstress yourself, and I would recommend you stay inside while the leaves are falling.

It is not the best of treatments, but it is better than nothing. If while having an attack, you breathe into the bag, then breathe back in, and repeat this process several times, it can ease your symptoms for a while. It is not infallible, but it is better than nothing.
