"Constantine." Dream managed a rare, small smile to Johanna as he took the seat across from her. "It was the former." If it had been the latter, Dream would be in far more of a foul mood than he currently resided in. Death had signed him up from a place of good intentions; Desire had only done so to torture him.

"Did you sign yourself up then? Or did someone do those honors for you?" He asked. He couldn't see Johanna signing herself up, but people could surprise you once and a while.

Constantine felt amused, namely because she'd just ended a date with Strange who spent a good portion of said date teasing her about Dream. Which entertained them both more than the whole not wife/wife aspect. She did offer an actual genuine smile.

"Yes, that makes sense, or you'd have a more stormy disposition," she teased gently.

A nod. "Yes, I did. I figured I should make a friend besides you and Strange. Although I just had a date with Strange, so I'm not entirely certain how that's worked out for me. Next year though? I'm passing." A pause because she did tell Strange she'd talk to Dream.

"Speaking of Strange," not an auspicious start, but Constantine would rather get this out of the way. "He'd like to meet you. And for me to meet his not wife but kind of wife because multiverses are weird. So I said I'd have you over at some point. No pressure, because I know how you feel about social situations." Maybe the Earth could swallow her. Dammit Strange. She was going to throttle him at the end of the night before he went off on his date with Clea.

In the wake of the teasing, Dream said nothing. He still felt rather grumpy about being here regardless of which sister signed him up. He'd already decided he wouldn't be engaging in this again next year. Twice in a row was more than enough for him.

Dream was...confused. Why would he need to be with Johanna to meet with this Strange person? Could he not do this on his own? "I am unsure why we need to be together in order for me to meet Mr. Strange," Dream replied simply. "Or to meet with his not wife, wife." That was a mouthful, wasn't it?

Constantine could tell that Dream wouldn't be partaking in this event again. Truthfully, she thought once was more than enough for her. She would much rather be getting a root canal.

When she spoke to Strange afterwards, she was going to punch him in the arm. Johana sighed, but said nothing at first.

"Her name is Clea, which is less of a mouthful." Constantine tilted her head. She could choose to be honest or go back to her usual nonchalance. The stronger part of her meant to say he thinks it will be less awkward and then Clea can meet more people at once which didn't sound completely wrong nor pathetic.

Instead she said, "Because he knows you're important to me and Clea is important to him (or kind of? Johanna was still unclear on that front) and he thought it would be nice for the four of us to have a dinner party. Don't worry because I know you don't eat and I will be ordering takeout, so I don't accidentally poison anyone." Cooking and Constantine did not mix, unless she made a full English breakfast or cooked boxed pasta.

Johanna was now certain she would be telling Strange if he so much as thought about teasing her again regarding Dream, she would tell Cloak to strangle him.

Dream nodded. Clea was certainly far less complicated than "wife, not wife." But as for a dinner party? Constantine was correct, he didn't tend to indulge in human food so why would he go to a dinner party? He would be the only one there not eating while everyone else ate. Not that Dream know much about human behavior most days, but wouldn't that be awkward?

He also wasn't sure how he felt about "important." Johanna was human. Mortal. "Important" tended to lead in directions that Dream knew never worked out for him or for the other being involved.

"I don't know. I don't eat so it really does not make much sense for me to attend a dinner party," he replied. "I don't know much about human behavior, but would that not be awkward?"

Constantine took a long pull from her beer and knew she should not have said anything. So, she offered a typical smirk, inwardly berating herself. As though friends couldn't be fucking important. She knew better. She fucking knew better and yet she'd still opened her gods damned mouth.

So instead she nodded. "It's fine. I'm happy to just host them." After all she did like her friend and wanted to meet Clea. Constantine debated getting up and leaving. Save them both a lot of awkwardness.

"You could invite my sister," Dream suggested. "She enjoys human food and is far better in those types of situations."

It made sense—Death had always been more comfortable around humans than he was. While Dream floated in and out of their subconscious minds, watching from the shadows, Death walked among them, interacting, understanding their nature in ways Dream could never quite grasp.

Despite his vast knowledge, Dream often found himself lacking in the subtleties of human connection. Unfortunately, it was a gap he could never quite bridge.

Truthfully, Constantine did think the other two would enjoy meeting Death. Death could read a room, but that was part of what Constantine liked about Dream. He was earnest in a way most weren't.

"I'd have to order a lot of apple items," she commented with a smirk. One didn't need to know Death well to know she greatly enjoyed apples.

Constantine reminded herself that love fucked one up and that friendship was probably for the fucking best anyway, for everyone involved.

Dream allowed a smirk to tug at the corner of his lips. "Death is certainly fond of apples," he remarked, his voice tinged with amusement. Among other human foods, of course. He knew she had a particular fondness for a good cup of tea as well.

The bell rang, a welcome interruption that spared them from another second of the rather awkward conversation. Dream stood and waited for her to do the same. His hands slipped into the pockets of his long coat.

"I sincerely hope you have a good last date, Constantine," he said, his voice softer, a little more sincere. The conversation had left him confused and conflicted, thoughts swirling in a way that unsettled him. He would need time to think.

	Death probably tried enough food for all three Endless here altogether. At the sound of the bell, Constantine didn't even hide her sigh of relief. Thank fuck. "You too, Dream."
