Jonathan had begun in the Madison Public Library by default. He was curious about how the history of the Middle East had differed from his world since there was no Wild Card here, no Living Gods, no Nur-Al-Allah. Thus no Caliphate and no genocidal war. But their Egyptian History section wasn't particularly robust. He'd asked about other options, and had been directed to the Hanover College library. They taught history courses, so the texts available were more extensive, or so the librarian had told him.
The Hanover library was, indeed, considerably more extensive than the public library. Now he sat at one of the reading tables with a stack of books at his side, several books open before him--including an atlas of historical maps. As he'd suspected, the history of the Middle East in this world seemed to be pretty much identical (as far as he could tell) to his own world until 1948, when a Wild Card outbreak struck Port Said, killing over a thousand people and producing scores of jokers and thirteen Aces.
He had a notebook open before him as well, in which he was taking notes. He had just written a list the Living Gods, most of whom he'd met, as well as other aces from Egypt and the Caliphate, when he realized he wasn't alone. A stranger was standing by the table, seemingly looking over his research materials.
"Hello?" Jonathan said.
