Morales was pretty sure that the universe was laughing at him. He'd had that conversation about not wanting kids and next thing he knew, he'd wound up as someone's guardian. Of course, his ward was a self-sufficient sixteen-year-old girl, but even so. It was enough for him to laugh at, he just couldn't help it. Served him right for saying what he'd said.
He'd pulled a late shift at the clinic, which meant that he was spending most of the day unpacking -- not that he'd been there long enough to have accumulated a whole lot of stuff. He just knew that he really should do it while he had the chance otherwise he'd put it off for far too long and then they'd end up six months down the line with half his stuff unpacked more stuff in the apartment, and nowhere to put what he still needed to unpack. And so there he was, going through everything for the kitchen.
He wasn't entirely sure where Anne was -- that first night he'd pretty much made sure she knew exactly how to use her phone, though she'd figured out a good portion of it on her own, and then he'd turned her loose. As a result, it wasn't uncommon for her to be out exploring at random points in the day. She knew to contact him if she needed him, or if she needed help, he was pretty sure she'd be alright.
His attention was grabbed by the sound of the door opening. Oh, there she was after all.
