For Martha, the Year That Never Was was only a few months ago. While she had been dealing with it pretty well, she had mostly been repressing it. In truth, she continued to battle nightmares and moments where she got extremely sad, but she didn't want to admit it to anyone - She didn't want it getting back to the Doctor. Especially not what he was already feeling down and she definitely didn't want to be the one to make the new Doctor sad as well.
The party she had gone to had been nice, but at some point it hit her hard and she excused herself from the party. This was another year without her family, though thankfully this time they were slaves to the Master.
Martha found herself in a park and sat on the bench, her arms wrapping around herself from the chill in the air. Her eyes looked over the play structure and smiled bittersweetly. She had been in Ohio before. She wondered, not for the first time, if she had ever visited Madison Valley. A lot of the smaller places lost their names once the Master took over. She frowned suddenly, her hand slipping into her pocket and pulling out a pin she always had on her in one form or another. Her thumb smoothed over the words 'Hooray! I am Nine!'. Aleesha liked playgrounds, she remembered her saying. Martha remembered the other keepsakes she had back at the apartment, having come with them by sheer chance. All of them by people who had died for her.
Sometimes she knew how the Doctor felt.
Martha closed her eyes and fought the sting against her eyes. She was not going to cry in the middle of a park on Christmas Eve.
