Who: Martha and Open
When: December 24, later at night
What: Trying to forget the recent past
Where: At a park
Rating: Probably low

For Martha, the Year That Never Was was only a few months ago. While she had been dealing with it pretty well, she had mostly been repressing it. In truth, she continued to battle nightmares and moments where she got extremely sad, but she didn't want to admit it to anyone - She didn't want it getting back to the Doctor. Especially not what he was already feeling down and she definitely didn't want to be the one to make the new Doctor sad as well.

The party she had gone to had been nice, but at some point it hit her hard and she excused herself from the party. This was another year without her family, though thankfully this time they were slaves to the Master.

Martha found herself in a park and sat on the bench, her arms wrapping around herself from the chill in the air. Her eyes looked over the play structure and smiled bittersweetly. She had been in Ohio before. She wondered, not for the first time, if she had ever visited Madison Valley. A lot of the smaller places lost their names once the Master took over. She frowned suddenly, her hand slipping into her pocket and pulling out a pin she always had on her in one form or another. Her thumb smoothed over the words 'Hooray! I am Nine!'. Aleesha liked playgrounds, she remembered her saying. Martha remembered the other keepsakes she had back at the apartment, having come with them by sheer chance. All of them by people who had died for her.

Sometimes she knew how the Doctor felt.

Martha closed her eyes and fought the sting against her eyes. She was not going to cry in the middle of a park on Christmas Eve.

Faith didn't like being inside right now. She'd let Bucky nag her into staying with them because of Christmas but that didn't mean she wanted to go to any of the parties or be festive. Instead she'd slipped out to wander around after dark fell to just be alone for a while. She missed living in a place where she could fight vampires every night because that definitely helped out when she was feeling like shit.

There wasn't a lot of people out because of the holiday but there was always a few. When she went through the park there was someone sitting there...something that back home would be suicidal but hey it was in a boring phase here in Madison so they were probably okay. Physically anyway.

"Don't you have somewhere to be?" That didn't mean she had to be nice or social.

Being around someone was always a good way of sobering Martha up, be it crying or drunkenness. When she heard the voice of someone else, she took a breath and centered herself, the familiar Martha Jones 'alrightness' on her face again. In fact, she offered the woman a small smile while pocketing the in Aleesha had given her at the refugee camp.

"Was at one, actually. It was fun. Decided I needed some air, yeah?" She could have just gone outside of the Rogers-Barnes house, but those were details. "Could ask the same of you." Since she was out too.

Faith wasn't smiling. That wasn't her preferred method of hiding how she was feeling. She just frowned and shrugged at the question. Why were there so many damn Brits in town? Sure, she was on better terms with Giles...actually she was on better terms with him than B was in her time but mostly she just thought about Wes around the accent and she didn't like that. At least she didn't think FP and Jughead were going back to die.

"I don't like people so, no. No place to be."

"Everybody likes some people." She had met a lot of people who had walls up before, both in the passed year and while traveling with the Doctor. It didn't phase Martha too much anymore, though it always made her question why they were like that. "But I can see how big parties would be hard since there's be a lot of people you didn't like among the few you could stand."

She leaned back on the bench. "Doesn't get as cold here as in London, so staying out and ignoring the parties isn't so bad."

"And they're all too fucking happy. It's just Christmas, not like it's anything special." The holiday had never meant much to Faith. It wasn't like her family life meant anything and there sure as hell hadn't ever been money to celebrate it when she was a kid.

"London wasn't too bad. Didn't get to spend a lot of time there but it had a pretty good crop of vampires to kill so that was okay." She'd had to learn how to blend in to help take care of a rogue slayer, it still amused her to occasionally pull out the posh accent and knowledge. she'd actually been a halfway decent fake British rich brat.

Martha's lips form a wry smile. "You've been to London. " She gave the girl props for knowing her accent from sound rather than asking her for her location. It impressed her. Not a lot of people outside the UK could decipher different accents. One time a towns person even asked her if she was from Australia.

"Vampires, huh? Met a sort of vampire once. She was an alien who sucked the blood out of people with a straw. Stole their DNA that way. Almost killed an entire hospital filled of people until the Doctor got in her way."

Faith took a deep breath and put herself mentally in the headspace Giles had taught her to use as her British persona and when she spoke again this time it was in a very authentic accent.

"I did a little undercover work in the area. We had a problem to take care of so I had to take lessons." Then she cleared her throat and shrugged dropping all of it to use her normal voice.

"Our aren't aliens, just kinda demons and killing them is pretty good for stress relief. Pointy stick through the heart. Or if you're feeling fancy you can set them on fire or lop their head off."

"Sounds a bit messing, choppin' off someone's head." She was imagining a lot of blood. Since she was a doctor, she knew what that would look like. "Good on the accent, though. You probably fooled a lot of people." Martha was proper impressed. Usually people tried to mimic the Queen and not very successfully so. "I'm assuming there aren't a lot of vampires here under the Dome, then."

"Not like you think." Faith actually cracked a touch of a smile at that one. Sure there were things in her world that bled all over things when you cut their head off but vampires were messy for a different reason. "More like you need a dust buster after. They just dust." She made a poofing gesture with her hands.

"and no, there's some but they're not the soulless kind you have to stake. Which makes things a lot more boring."

"Turning to dust sounds convenient." She wondered if the Doctor ran into any something like that.

"Now that I think of it, there's another sort of vampire I unfortunately met once. They're called the Weeping Angels. Look like stone statues you'd find in a cemetery or something, but if you take your eyes off of them, they attack you. Send you back in time and feed off of you until you die. Doesn't sound so bad, considering you can still live your life, but... it's not fun. Trust me."

"Definitely helps you avoid murder raps for the most part when they turn into dust." Faith of course still had one but it was for people not vampires and she didn't do that anymore.

"That...sounds horrible. I mean mostly what our monsters do is just kill you. Kill your soul and take over your body maybe but you're gone you don't have to live through a really long death."

"Tell me about it." The Weeping Angels were scary, though not as scary as some other creatures she had met. Certainly not as scary as the Master.

"How do you cope, then. Bein' here without being able to do what you normally do? I know it drives some people mad."

"I drink a lot." It wasn't a joke. Faith kind of held onto her shit by her fingernails some days. "Get into fights, the usual. Live for the moments they let the bad shit in and I get to do what I'm made for."

Being a weapon made it really hard to enjoy the times of peace. She got an actual itch to hurt and kill things like someone jonesing for a fix.

The 'drink a lot' comment reminded her of Constantine. She wondered what he was trying to deal with. She wasn't sure she would ever be in a position to ask, but she was curious.

"You were made for?" Martha had caught that party. Surely she wasn't made simply to fight. People were more complex than that, or she liked to think so anyway.

She might not like the answers if he told her. Faith had spent enough time around Constantine to find out he had some shit in his past that was a lot like hers.

"I'm a Slayer. It's a thing...like mystical one girl in all the world does it sort of thing. At least until lately. Used to be lots of potential Slayers and only one picked but they broke that and now all of the potentials are Slayers. We fight." And if you didn't get enough of it you really, really, missed it and if you were Faith you made stupid decisions sometimes because of it.

"Slayer. Got it." She nodded and wondered vaguely if the Doctor knew anything about it. Had he, or she, ever run into Slayers before? She filed away the question for later when she saw one of them.

"I'm more made for healin'." She lifted her hands up as if she say 'see? Healing hands.' "I'm a doctor at the clinic, if you ever get hurt and need some help."
