Characters: Kira Fenwick & Dorcas Meadowes
Setting: Friday, October 8 | 4:00 P.M. | 3rd Floor Charms Corridor
Content: SFW
Summary: Kira is wasting time after Charms, and Dorcas happens by. Some serious friend time ensues, and they connect on a more personal level without their glue (i.e. Lily) present.
Status: Incomplete

Kira's week seemed to drag on a bit more than was typical. She found herself more restless than usual during lectures and distracted during practical skill application. Though she was able to come to and redeem herself every single time without fail, the girl couldn't deny her universe felt somewhat out of alignment. Kira couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she assumed it had something to do with all of the changes in her life at that given point in time. Lily, one of her closest friends and the glue that held Kira to her other mates, had hooked up with Potter. With that came new territory for all involved. She had to grow accustomed to seeing them together, for one, and such experiences didn't involve near as much shoving Potter away on Lily's behalf. Strange to say the least!

It probably wouldn't have been near as impossible to manage if not for the fact it was coupled with potential for Dorcas to find herself paired off as well. A slip up on a recent journal entry, thanks to the aforementioned Potter boy, left Kira completely aware of Remus' feelings for her blonde mate. It was a given Kira couldn't deny Remus was probably one of the most tolerant and respectable of the Marauders by far, and frankly she had little opposition to seeing them pair off. The only problem was, again, things were traveling faster than Kira could wrap her head around them. She couldn't fine-tune herself in enough time to handle the next quaffle tossed at her head, figuratively speaking. She was a creature who could adapt to such things if given enough time to work them out, but this wasn't the case that had presented itself recently. The grave reality of the fact was two of her three mates now were going to find themselves torn between the distraction that was boys and their good old-fashioned girl time. Still Kira supported them as best as she knew how, and continued to stash secrets where necessary, such as was the case with Dorcas and Remus. It certainly helped she saw the girl around Lily nine times out of ten, meaning she wouldn't have room to slip up and say anything. That was the one problem with caring enough to occupy yourself with the love lives of your mates: one tends to fall into the trap of 'too much information' and accidentally spill something.

After a lengthy Charms class, Kira darted out of the room ahead of most the others. She was eager to get back to her dorm to attempt to finish off as much of Pride and Prejudice as she could prior to dinner. It was a necessity, after all, considering she planned on following through with Lily's suggestion of going as Elizabeth Bennet to the Halloween ball. Sure, it was somewhat expected of her and safe, but it seemed good for the most part. She was still working out the kinks, and for that reason had refrained from ordering the dress Hogsmeade weekend. Despite that she'd written down her measurements anyway and would see where the next few weeks took her. As Kira was on her way out the door, her paternal grandmum's necklace got caught in another student she'd bumped in to, causing it to snap off her neck. Though the chain had left an immediate red mark and some remote tenderness, Kira was more upset about the fact her necklace needed a little fixer upper now. Sure it wasn't too massive a task for magic, but the fact her aqua aura pendant had fallen on the floor was significant to Kira. According to tradition, the pendant represented healing, love, and protection. The fact it was dropped hit her as if it were a sign of a bad omen. "Bollocks," she mumbled under her breath, crouching in the middle of some of the students as they attempted to leave class. A few grumbled about her slowing them down, but most just went around Kira. Once she'd retrieved her pendant, she straightened up and headed straight for the nearest window in the Charms corridor, one that just so happened to look out over the front lawns. Letting out a soft sigh as she pulled out her wand, Kira sat down one the windowsill despite the fact it wasn't necessarily designed for such purposes. With no further thought apart from the fact she needed to put an ever-lasting chain link charm on her necklace when she got back to the dorm, Kira temporarily repaired the chain and slipped the pendant back on. "Good as ever, I imagine," she voiced to herself, placing it around her neck once more before stretching the pendant out to look at her handiwork.

If someone had told Dorcas that it was Friday she would have been surprised. This week had become a blur to the blonde Gryffindor and her mind had become so preoccupied that if anyone had asked her what day it was she had a feeling she wouldn't be able to answer them. Dorcas hadn't been sleeping well and it slowly was getting the best of her. Her father's letters had become less frequent and the fact that she wasn't receiving a letter from him almost daily irked her. Dorcas understood that his job was a particularly demanding one but that didn't mean she didn't worry about her father. He had informed her of how busy the ministry was becoming and told her to be careful. The very little information he gave her just made her angry. Normally, Victor Meadowes wouldn't spare any details from his daughter, no matter how gruesome they were. 'Be careful' was all she got from him. What the hell did that mean?

There was also everything with her brother. Arcas was slowly, thankfully, becoming accustomed to his way of life at Hogwarts, though, it was only because of Dorcas' effort. After having a very brief discussion with Hestia about her worries concerning her brother she decided to take her advice. She tossed up between either talking to Kira or Emmeline but thought Emmeline would be a little more helpful. Though, this didn't mean Dorcas thought Kira wouldn't help in the situation, she just thought Arcas would take a little more warmly to Emmeline. Besides, Emme was prefect, it was her job. Dorcas could live a little easier knowing that Emme was looking out for her younger brother but that, again, didn't mean she didn't worry.

Along with everything happening with her family she was also a little concerned about Lily. Severus Snape contacted her friend through one of her journal entries and it seemed to have shaken Lily a little too much. Considering what had happened with the two in the past, she didn't like Snape at all. His comment hit a little too close to home and Dorcas had not only heard but witnessed all the snarks that were aimed her mother's way, so even if she was a forgiving person, she wasn't about to forgive someone who used such a vulgar word. Snape's recent attempt to reach out to Lily only added salt to Lily's unhealed wounds. Not that she would dare tell anyone in the fear of being proved wrong, she started thinking about her friendship with Narcissa a little more. This year she found herself relying on Narcissa's friendship more than the previous year and Lily's past frightened her a little. If Narcissa did anything to cause her pain she would explode so it wasn't like she was frightened of the betrayal per say, she was frightened of being taking for a fool. The one thing Dorcas hated was being taken advantage of, even she knew she trusted people a little too much. But she truly trusted Narcissa, right? There was nothing to worry about.

With all thoughts clouding her mind, Dorcas wasn't in her customary mood. Today, she was grumpy. Today, Dorcas almost hexed Alecto Carrow's evil smirk right off her face. The only thing that stopped her was Caradoc, he had to physically snatch her wand off of her. This morning however, despite her mood, she had put extra care into her appearance to ensure no one would question her with 'are you feeling okay?'. She had charmed her hair wavy, braided her fringe back and clipped it with the hair accessory Narcissa had given her. Dorcas had even gone to the extreme lengths and made sure the bags under her eyes were hidden. So as far as anybody knew, well apart from Caradoc, she was her normal, lovely self.

When Kira had charms, Dorcas had Defense Against the Dark Arts with the rest of her housemates and Slytherins. Despite their looming presence Dorcas felt a little better after her class. Defense Against the Dark Arts was her absolute favorite and despite the irony, it always lighten her mood. After her class she immediately made her way to the Charms classroom in hopes to bump into the Professor to discuss the work she had missed last lesson. Thanks to Narcissa, she had skipped a class for the very first time and it happened to be Charms. If it was a subject like Care of Magical Creatures, Dorcas wouldn't have even bothered with going out of her way to get whatever work was set for them. Though, with Charms it was different. Apart from Defense Against the Dark Arts and Astronomy, Charms was one of her favorite subjects, probably because it was came easy to her, so Dorcas didn't mind getting extra work to catch up. As the Charms corridor cleared out of her fellow students she tried to get through the classroom door, however, before she made it through she noticed her Ravenclaw friend by the window. Quickly, she redesigned her path, leaving the classroom behind and headed towards her friend. She smiled slightly, though the heart it usually had wasn't there, as she reached her friend. "You know, talking to yourself is the first sign of insanity." She paused and pondered on the thought. "Though, I guess that means we're all a little mad."

It wasn't until Dorcas was within a few feet of her that Kira realized she'd earned the someone's attention. When she glanced up from her necklace and discovered just who it was, a smile crept upon her features. It had been a while since the entire group had spent time together. As a result of Lily's extra time with Potter, Dorcas hadn't been around as much. Lily was the glue that held the two blondes together, and for some reason or another her absence left much unresolved between her closest mates. It wasn't tense or anything, just more or less lacking. The fact Dorcas had gone out of her way to make conversation was pleasing enough. "Madness is when the voices start talking back to you," Kira teased, cocking an eyebrow at Dorcas playfully before releasing her necklace and hopping down from the windowsill. "I'd have to agree with you on that one, though. We're all a few bristles short of a broom."

Dorcas and Kira were about as opposite of the spectrum as they came. Although Kira cared for her counterpart dearly, it went without saying there were times they didn't see eye-to-eye. Dorcas was compassionate and gentle compared to her, and well, the way Kira handled situations didn't always leave the girl singing her praises. That aside, they always managed to move on without much fuss, so perhaps that was why their friendship had proven to be lasting. After readjusting her messenger bag across her torso, Kira stepped closer to Dorcas to give her belated hug. "Defense Against the Dark Arts ended early, I see? Getting a head start on Charms?"

When Dorcas approached Kira, she felt a wave of guilt ease over her. She knew very well that she had neglected some of her friends lately. Dorcas couldn't blame herself per say but she knew she'd been distant lately, and that was her fault entirely. Lily's recent formation of a relationship with Potter only added fuel to the fire. She couldn't blame Lily for that either, it was granted that of course she'd want to spend time with her new boyfriend. But even Lily's absence shouldn't be an excuse. Dorcas should have made more of an effort with both Kira and Hestia. Though, with all the thoughts that had been clouding her mind recently she hadn't even thought of it and wasn't that hard on herself. However, no matter how much she had taken Kira's friendship for granted this week, she was pleased to run into her friend. "So is that what those voices mean?" Dorcas replied, humor flooding through her voice. When Kira mentioned everybody being a little mad, Lily instantly popped into her head. She was always cautious with what she said, mostly because she didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, though she knew her thought wasn't a vicious thought so she decided to express it. "You're telling me. Especially our dear ginger friend. I don't think I've ever seen her this wrapped up in one bloke."

When Kira jumped off the windowsill and pulled her in for a hug, Dorcas wasn't sure if she should just blurt out an apology. Out of all of her friends, Narcissa and Emme were receiving most of the blonde's attention. Though, that fire inside her, the one that anybody rarely saw, stopped her from making an apology. For one, Kira hadn't really spoken to her lately either and secondly, Dorcas wasn't going to apologize for having other friends and other worries. This recent drift of her clique wasn't anybody's fault, it was all situational, nobody should apologize. Dorcas returned the hug happily and tried to ignore her irritable mood. In hopes of cheering up she laughed as she pulled away from her friend and made a joke. "Fenwick, isn't it? Kira Fenwick? I think I remember you. You're in my Astronomy class." Dorcas pointed a questioning finger at her friend, hoping she'd play along with the joke.

It took a moment for Dorcas to recognize what Kira had said. Whenever Dorcas had things on her mind, it was almost like pulling teeth to get her to listen. She remembered the guilt that had washed over her moments ago and decided to concentrate entirely on her friend. "Yes, the professor decided to grant us a five minute early mark." She rolled her eyes, you could hardly call five minutes an early mark. The only reason she was on this side of the castle so shortly after the bell was because she had basically ran here, in hopes of catching her Charms professor before he retired for the day. "Ah, no actually." She paused and decided to take a seat on the window seat, her legs rather tired from rushing here. "Catching up is more like it. Narcissa coaxed me into skipping a class. There was something she was desperate to show me." Dorcas rolled her eyes kindheartedly as she recalled what her friend had been so desperate to show her. Earrings. Bloody earrings her parents had sent her.

The question Dorcas asked did exactly what it was set out to do in the first place. Kira couldn't contain her smile, though she tried to put on a serious face to give a slight nod in agreement when her mate asked if that's what the voices meant. What Lily and James had was beyond explanation at this point. It took Kira a great deal of time to feel that comfortable around Rabastan when the two had been together. Then again, James was so much more vulnerable for the sake of Lily. Comparing him to Rabastan was almost like comparing an onion to sticky toffee pudding. James had made himself a fool in front of the entire student body for the sake of hopefully securing just a few kind words on Lily's behalf, so Kira was confident he wouldn't prove to be anything less than a worthy suitor for her friend. He had the potential to be as prideful as Mr. Darcy, but fortunately he was also as sincere and carefree as Mr. Bingley. Perhaps too easily swayed by his friends as Bingley had been, but that was hardly a trait to fault him over. He was a teenage boy, after all. It would take a while to bring him out of that, but Kira was certain if anyone could do it, Lily Evans could. "It is a first," she concluded after a few seconds of thought, giving a look to her feet as she sussed it out. "I imagine it has something to do with the fact James never gave anyone a chance to really pursue her. He chased everyone else off." The situation was rather humorous looking back on it now, come to think of it. James didn't seem to take 'no' for an answer, did he?

Contrary to Dorcas' thoughts, the need for an apology hadn't even crossed Kira's mind. She realized her friends had other lives apart from the group as a whole, and that wasn't something she wanted to make anyone feel guilty about. There was no shame in doing your own thing. If Kira had toughened up a bit she would have gladly pursued ulterior means of keeping her social life vibrant. Unfortunately she had handled the Lily situation all wrong, deciding to go off on her own a bit more as a means to physically attempt to distance herself from the awkwardness that lingered. It made absolutely no sense that Dorcas and Kira were strained at times when Lily or even Hestia weren't around. Yet, that was simply how it was. "Of course you remember me. I'm unforgettable," she teased back, giving Dorcas' finger a gentle squeeze. Releasing it again, Kira waved her hand as if brushing the conversation aside as a little lighthearted fun. "At least some of my classmates think so. I seem to be the one most frequently sacrificed to the professor when others don't know the answers. And you?" she added, redirecting the playfulness. "You're that blonde girl everyone keeps talking about, the one that's too sweet for her own good. Dorcas Meadowes, yeah?"

Kira hadn't picked up on it before, but she could tell now that Dorcas' attention seemed to be fleeting at best. Once she had made that mental note, Kira was able to piece together something wasn't exactly right when it came to her mate's affect. Her expressions almost seemed forced at certain times, and that was entirely unnatural for Dorcas. Narrowing her eyes briefly at the girl, Kira crossed her arms over her torso as leaned against the wall. "How generous," she added with a smirk, a little more pacified in manner this time. Her mind was off chasing bunnies elsewhere, breaching that territory between casual-happy and concerned-solemn. As Dorcas occupied the window seat, Kira smiled slightly while observing her manner a bit more. She couldn't quite lay a finger on it, but something told her Dorcas was withholding part of her. What it was, she couldn't quite place, but as far as Kira had always been able to tell, Dorcas was a great deal more at peace than she seemed today.

Then the truth, at least part of it, began to surface. Dorcas was a flustered mess because she'd skived off Charms class. Yet, Narcissa Black was the cause? Kira didn't want to go about pointing fingers, but making friends with a Slytherin, particularly one belonging to the Black family, hardly seemed advisable. She hadn't really experienced the girls for herself, but from all she'd heard from Lily and Sirius about them, Andromeda was the only potentially agreeable one. It didn't take a genius to realize Narcissa was only satisfied when she was flaunting her own perfection and discussing how privileged her life had been. Granted Kira's mind had been swayed to some degree by her mates, but the more she looked in to the matter, the more she realized all evidence pointed toward their assumption about the Blacks within Slytheirn: bad news all around. The fact Narcissa was friendly toward the Lestranges, especially after Kira had that falling out with Rabastan, spoke volumes in itself. Needless to say, Kira's smile faded when Dorcas mentioned Narcissa, and skipping class for the girl for that matter. "Oh? Did she skive off class for you as well?" Kira blurted out, prior to really considering how bitchy that sounded.

Despite Dorcas' mood she actually laughed at her friend's comment. After a week or so, Dorcas still wasn't used to the idea of Lily and Potter and was almost certain that it would be a while before she actually was. After all, a month ago Lily was arguing with and hexing the poor bloke. But everything considered, even the fact that she had hardly seen Lily this week, she was happy for them. If Lily was happy, she had to be, even if she was feeling less than at peace this week. "He always had a natural talent for scaring off any potential suitors, didn't he?" Dorcas hadn't witnessed true perseverance until James decided to fancy Lily. During that time, Dorcas found Potter's attempts amusing and Lily's temper rampages even more amusing. Those days, however, were far behind them and now they were just like every other sappy couple at Hogwarts. "I don't think Potter knows the definition of no." Dorcas said as she quickly brushed a stand of hair that had fallen in her face. Dorcas forcibly smiled, trying not to let simple and stupid things like her hair irritate her.

During the past week, Dorcas hadn't really wondered what Kira had been up to. She wasn't sure if Kira had any friends apart from herself, Lily and Hestia. As she thought of it a little more, Kira never really mentioned anybody and that confused Dorcas a little bit. Dorcas was one for making as many connections as possible. She was quite independent and valued the calmness solitary could often offer her but she found it rather important to have someone to talk to. Even if she never really opened up that much. Even if it was just talking about the weather, the lake or chocolate frogs. Come to think of it, Dorcas wasn't even sure if Kira had ever really opened up to her. Dorcas' and Kira's friendship was the most strained out of the four of them. Dorcas knew Lily from first year and Hestia had been her contribution to the group but Kira? Dorcas had originally felt as if she had to become friends with her, seeing as Lily grew so close to her. Not that Dorcas had ever regretted it. Kira and Dorcas were polar opposites but they sort of found a balance in each other, even if the time they spent together away from the group was strained and a little awkward.

She was smiling as Kira played along with the joke, nodding her head as if she was starting to remember this 'Kira Fenwick'. Though, her smile quickly fell for a split second before she recovered, hoping Kira wouldn't pick it up. "Oh, my national identifier." She rolled her eyes slightly as she dropped the playfulness completely. She understood that everybody had an identifier, though, her's always seemed to make her think that everybody considered her a joke. On any other day she wouldn't have been so bitter about it. On any other day she would have smiled and nodded along as she would have mentally rolled her eyes but today, her irritable mood was causing cracks in her usual facade. It wasn't that she was fake because she wasn't. Dorcas' kindness was natural. It was something she couldn't help. She would have an argument with somebody and run back to them apologizing for yelling at them, even if she was still pissed. Dorcas couldn't really whine about her identifier, after all it summed her up perfectly. But her identifier seemed to affect the way people treated her. She felt that sometimes they tip toed around her, scared that something they said would hurt her feelings. Sometimes, she felt as if they thought she needed to be taken care of. The latter is what irritated her the most. She was a Gryffindor, she didn't need to be taken care of. Her father was an auror, she could just be as fierce as he was when she wanted to be. Maybe that's why she valued Narcissa's friendship so much. Narcissa never tip toed around her and she didn't see Dorcas as soft or weak.

By now, Dorcas was proficient in picking up the littlest things in a person's mannerism. It was a trait Dorcas had inherited from her mother and it came in handy sometimes. Dorcas picked up on Kira's eyes narrowing and she tried not to read too much into it. Knowing Kira, Dorcas thought she was coming up with all different theories of why she seemed irritable today and that just put her a little more on edge. She shrugged when Kira mentioned the so called generosity of their Defense teacher and redirected her line of sight to the activities out the window. She didn't turn back to her friend until she heard Kira's rather blunt statement about Narcissa. She felt her nails dig into her palms as she tried not to snap back. Normally, comments about Narcissa didn't bother her. She had become accustomed to hearing some back handed comments about her friend but today, considering the darkness that tended to grow deep down inside of her when she was stressed, she was just a step away of telling Kira to sod off. She looked at Kira, taken back by her comment as a darkness filled her hazel green eyes. She wasn't sure whether Kira meant it in the way it sounded but all the same it had hit a nerve. "Actually she did. But I don't know why it'd concern you. You've never been concerned about Narcissa's absentee record before." She paused, acknowledging the anger that was probably flooding her voice. She took a deep breath before continuing. "Actually, you've never been concerned about anything to do with Narcissa. I don't know why you'd start now." Dorcas wasn't sure what she was more upset about: the fact that Kira had come out with a rather bitchy remark or the realisation that Kira had never been interested in any of her friendships that didn't include her or the rest of their traditional clique.

"Saves us the trouble of protecting her, doesn't it?" Kira teased back in regards to James' unconventional way of keeping any other guy from Lily. Never in Kira's wildest dreams did Lily wind up properly falling for the git, though. She had to hand it to Potter. He certainly had a way of making her smile. Any former hints of reluctance Kira had about their relationship was debunked. Sure, she had to get used to doing things apart from Lily, the one within their clique she spent the most time with, but that was something she had time to work out. Seeing Lily so happy with someone who appeared to worship her existence was all she could hope for on behalf of her friend. "Good thing he doesn't. Lily seems to be enjoying the way things are now," she added in response to James not taking 'no' for an answer. "Besides, I've grown rather attached to that record player of hers."

While it was true Kira and Dorcas were hardly compatible prior to the merging of their group, she was slowly picking up on the fact Dorcas was closed off this afternoon. Her smiles seemed muted and her responses very forced. It made Kira incredibly uncomfortable, but she couldn't bring herself to leave the situation entirely. Even after Dorcas rolled her eyes about her 'national identifier.' Kira didn't see what was so bad about what she'd just said. Surely the fact Dorcas was too sweet for words wasn't that terrible, right? There were times Kira wished she could have that outlook on life and individuals as a whole. She found herself highly critical and guarded at the best of times, not for the sake of being an ass near as much as desiring to keep herself from anyone who could mean her wrong. To any on the outside looking in it was probably a bit ridiculous, but that was simply how Kira had managed to cope with things outside the scope of her control.

Kira kept quiet following the cold response from Dorcas only to find it continued to spiral downhill from there. Clearly her comment about Narcissa had not been received all that well, and Dorcas made a point to let her know. Before Kira had a chance to fully comprehend what was going on, her arms crossed over her chest as if it were a physical means of showing her counterpart she was closing herself off to the conversation. It wasn't an intentional nonverbal cue, but one that looked that way nevertheless. 'Right then, Dor. Why don't you tell me how you really feel?' she thought to herself. "Oh, no. You're right. My friend skiving off class for someone who has only ever shown an interest in herself certainly shouldn't concern me. Of course Narcissa had my friend's best interest in mind. She has a record of putting others first and laying herself down for the love of a mate." Kira could hardly help her response, but immediately after it had left her mouth, she began to regret it. For someone who so desperately clung to balance in her life, this was heading down a disastrous road with, no doubt, terrible outcomes. Kira closed her eyes briefly while she chewed on her lip, taking in a deep breath before looking back to Dorcas again. "Look, I'd better be going. That Muggle Studies essay isn't going to write itself," she lied, knowing full well she'd finished it up in Transfiguration earlier that week. Straightening her bag up on her arm again, Kira gave Dorcas one final look over before forcing an exasperated, tight-lipped smile and beginning to walk off. She didn't want to give Dorcas any further means of adding fuel to the fire, afraid of her own recoil if that were to happen.
