Characters: Kira Fenwick & Dorcas Meadowes
Setting: Friday, October 8 | 4:00 P.M. | 3rd Floor Charms Corridor
Content: SFW
Summary: Kira is wasting time after Charms, and Dorcas happens by. Some serious friend time ensues, and they connect on a more personal level without their glue (i.e. Lily) present.
Status: Incomplete

Kira's week seemed to drag on a bit more than was typical. She found herself more restless than usual during lectures and distracted during practical skill application. Though she was able to come to and redeem herself every single time without fail, the girl couldn't deny her universe felt somewhat out of alignment. Kira couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she assumed it had something to do with all of the changes in her life at that given point in time. Lily, one of her closest friends and the glue that held Kira to her other mates, had hooked up with Potter. With that came new territory for all involved. She had to grow accustomed to seeing them together, for one, and such experiences didn't involve near as much shoving Potter away on Lily's behalf. Strange to say the least!

It probably wouldn't have been near as impossible to manage if not for the fact it was coupled with potential for Dorcas to find herself paired off as well. A slip up on a recent journal entry, thanks to the aforementioned Potter boy, left Kira completely aware of Remus' feelings for her blonde mate. It was a given Kira couldn't deny Remus was probably one of the most tolerant and respectable of the Marauders by far, and frankly she had little opposition to seeing them pair off. The only problem was, again, things were traveling faster than Kira could wrap her head around them. She couldn't fine-tune herself in enough time to handle the next quaffle tossed at her head, figuratively speaking. She was a creature who could adapt to such things if given enough time to work them out, but this wasn't the case that had presented itself recently. The grave reality of the fact was two of her three mates now were going to find themselves torn between the distraction that was boys and their good old-fashioned girl time. Still Kira supported them as best as she knew how, and continued to stash secrets where necessary, such as was the case with Dorcas and Remus. It certainly helped she saw the girl around Lily nine times out of ten, meaning she wouldn't have room to slip up and say anything. That was the one problem with caring enough to occupy yourself with the love lives of your mates: one tends to fall into the trap of 'too much information' and accidentally spill something.

After a lengthy Charms class, Kira darted out of the room ahead of most the others. She was eager to get back to her dorm to attempt to finish off as much of Pride and Prejudice as she could prior to dinner. It was a necessity, after all, considering she planned on following through with Lily's suggestion of going as Elizabeth Bennet to the Halloween ball. Sure, it was somewhat expected of her and safe, but it seemed good for the most part. She was still working out the kinks, and for that reason had refrained from ordering the dress Hogsmeade weekend. Despite that she'd written down her measurements anyway and would see where the next few weeks took her. As Kira was on her way out the door, her paternal grandmum's necklace got caught in another student she'd bumped in to, causing it to snap off her neck. Though the chain had left an immediate red mark and some remote tenderness, Kira was more upset about the fact her necklace needed a little fixer upper now. Sure it wasn't too massive a task for magic, but the fact her aqua aura pendant had fallen on the floor was significant to Kira. According to tradition, the pendant represented healing, love, and protection. The fact it was dropped hit her as if it were a sign of a bad omen. "Bollocks," she mumbled under her breath, crouching in the middle of some of the students as they attempted to leave class. A few grumbled about her slowing them down, but most just went around Kira. Once she'd retrieved her pendant, she straightened up and headed straight for the nearest window in the Charms corridor, one that just so happened to look out over the front lawns. Letting out a soft sigh as she pulled out her wand, Kira sat down one the windowsill despite the fact it wasn't necessarily designed for such purposes. With no further thought apart from the fact she needed to put an ever-lasting chain link charm on her necklace when she got back to the dorm, Kira temporarily repaired the chain and slipped the pendant back on. "Good as ever, I imagine," she voiced to herself, placing it around her neck once more before stretching the pendant out to look at her handiwork.

The question Dorcas asked did exactly what it was set out to do in the first place. Kira couldn't contain her smile, though she tried to put on a serious face to give a slight nod in agreement when her mate asked if that's what the voices meant. What Lily and James had was beyond explanation at this point. It took Kira a great deal of time to feel that comfortable around Rabastan when the two had been together. Then again, James was so much more vulnerable for the sake of Lily. Comparing him to Rabastan was almost like comparing an onion to sticky toffee pudding. James had made himself a fool in front of the entire student body for the sake of hopefully securing just a few kind words on Lily's behalf, so Kira was confident he wouldn't prove to be anything less than a worthy suitor for her friend. He had the potential to be as prideful as Mr. Darcy, but fortunately he was also as sincere and carefree as Mr. Bingley. Perhaps too easily swayed by his friends as Bingley had been, but that was hardly a trait to fault him over. He was a teenage boy, after all. It would take a while to bring him out of that, but Kira was certain if anyone could do it, Lily Evans could. "It is a first," she concluded after a few seconds of thought, giving a look to her feet as she sussed it out. "I imagine it has something to do with the fact James never gave anyone a chance to really pursue her. He chased everyone else off." The situation was rather humorous looking back on it now, come to think of it. James didn't seem to take 'no' for an answer, did he?

Contrary to Dorcas' thoughts, the need for an apology hadn't even crossed Kira's mind. She realized her friends had other lives apart from the group as a whole, and that wasn't something she wanted to make anyone feel guilty about. There was no shame in doing your own thing. If Kira had toughened up a bit she would have gladly pursued ulterior means of keeping her social life vibrant. Unfortunately she had handled the Lily situation all wrong, deciding to go off on her own a bit more as a means to physically attempt to distance herself from the awkwardness that lingered. It made absolutely no sense that Dorcas and Kira were strained at times when Lily or even Hestia weren't around. Yet, that was simply how it was. "Of course you remember me. I'm unforgettable," she teased back, giving Dorcas' finger a gentle squeeze. Releasing it again, Kira waved her hand as if brushing the conversation aside as a little lighthearted fun. "At least some of my classmates think so. I seem to be the one most frequently sacrificed to the professor when others don't know the answers. And you?" she added, redirecting the playfulness. "You're that blonde girl everyone keeps talking about, the one that's too sweet for her own good. Dorcas Meadowes, yeah?"

Kira hadn't picked up on it before, but she could tell now that Dorcas' attention seemed to be fleeting at best. Once she had made that mental note, Kira was able to piece together something wasn't exactly right when it came to her mate's affect. Her expressions almost seemed forced at certain times, and that was entirely unnatural for Dorcas. Narrowing her eyes briefly at the girl, Kira crossed her arms over her torso as leaned against the wall. "How generous," she added with a smirk, a little more pacified in manner this time. Her mind was off chasing bunnies elsewhere, breaching that territory between casual-happy and concerned-solemn. As Dorcas occupied the window seat, Kira smiled slightly while observing her manner a bit more. She couldn't quite lay a finger on it, but something told her Dorcas was withholding part of her. What it was, she couldn't quite place, but as far as Kira had always been able to tell, Dorcas was a great deal more at peace than she seemed today.
