Characters: Kira Fenwick & Dorcas Meadowes
Setting: Friday, October 8 | 4:00 P.M. | 3rd Floor Charms Corridor
Content: SFW
Summary: Kira is wasting time after Charms, and Dorcas happens by. Some serious friend time ensues, and they connect on a more personal level without their glue (i.e. Lily) present.
Status: Incomplete

Kira's week seemed to drag on a bit more than was typical. She found herself more restless than usual during lectures and distracted during practical skill application. Though she was able to come to and redeem herself every single time without fail, the girl couldn't deny her universe felt somewhat out of alignment. Kira couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she assumed it had something to do with all of the changes in her life at that given point in time. Lily, one of her closest friends and the glue that held Kira to her other mates, had hooked up with Potter. With that came new territory for all involved. She had to grow accustomed to seeing them together, for one, and such experiences didn't involve near as much shoving Potter away on Lily's behalf. Strange to say the least!

It probably wouldn't have been near as impossible to manage if not for the fact it was coupled with potential for Dorcas to find herself paired off as well. A slip up on a recent journal entry, thanks to the aforementioned Potter boy, left Kira completely aware of Remus' feelings for her blonde mate. It was a given Kira couldn't deny Remus was probably one of the most tolerant and respectable of the Marauders by far, and frankly she had little opposition to seeing them pair off. The only problem was, again, things were traveling faster than Kira could wrap her head around them. She couldn't fine-tune herself in enough time to handle the next quaffle tossed at her head, figuratively speaking. She was a creature who could adapt to such things if given enough time to work them out, but this wasn't the case that had presented itself recently. The grave reality of the fact was two of her three mates now were going to find themselves torn between the distraction that was boys and their good old-fashioned girl time. Still Kira supported them as best as she knew how, and continued to stash secrets where necessary, such as was the case with Dorcas and Remus. It certainly helped she saw the girl around Lily nine times out of ten, meaning she wouldn't have room to slip up and say anything. That was the one problem with caring enough to occupy yourself with the love lives of your mates: one tends to fall into the trap of 'too much information' and accidentally spill something.

After a lengthy Charms class, Kira darted out of the room ahead of most the others. She was eager to get back to her dorm to attempt to finish off as much of Pride and Prejudice as she could prior to dinner. It was a necessity, after all, considering she planned on following through with Lily's suggestion of going as Elizabeth Bennet to the Halloween ball. Sure, it was somewhat expected of her and safe, but it seemed good for the most part. She was still working out the kinks, and for that reason had refrained from ordering the dress Hogsmeade weekend. Despite that she'd written down her measurements anyway and would see where the next few weeks took her. As Kira was on her way out the door, her paternal grandmum's necklace got caught in another student she'd bumped in to, causing it to snap off her neck. Though the chain had left an immediate red mark and some remote tenderness, Kira was more upset about the fact her necklace needed a little fixer upper now. Sure it wasn't too massive a task for magic, but the fact her aqua aura pendant had fallen on the floor was significant to Kira. According to tradition, the pendant represented healing, love, and protection. The fact it was dropped hit her as if it were a sign of a bad omen. "Bollocks," she mumbled under her breath, crouching in the middle of some of the students as they attempted to leave class. A few grumbled about her slowing them down, but most just went around Kira. Once she'd retrieved her pendant, she straightened up and headed straight for the nearest window in the Charms corridor, one that just so happened to look out over the front lawns. Letting out a soft sigh as she pulled out her wand, Kira sat down one the windowsill despite the fact it wasn't necessarily designed for such purposes. With no further thought apart from the fact she needed to put an ever-lasting chain link charm on her necklace when she got back to the dorm, Kira temporarily repaired the chain and slipped the pendant back on. "Good as ever, I imagine," she voiced to herself, placing it around her neck once more before stretching the pendant out to look at her handiwork.

Despite Dorcas' mood she actually laughed at her friend's comment. After a week or so, Dorcas still wasn't used to the idea of Lily and Potter and was almost certain that it would be a while before she actually was. After all, a month ago Lily was arguing with and hexing the poor bloke. But everything considered, even the fact that she had hardly seen Lily this week, she was happy for them. If Lily was happy, she had to be, even if she was feeling less than at peace this week. "He always had a natural talent for scaring off any potential suitors, didn't he?" Dorcas hadn't witnessed true perseverance until James decided to fancy Lily. During that time, Dorcas found Potter's attempts amusing and Lily's temper rampages even more amusing. Those days, however, were far behind them and now they were just like every other sappy couple at Hogwarts. "I don't think Potter knows the definition of no." Dorcas said as she quickly brushed a stand of hair that had fallen in her face. Dorcas forcibly smiled, trying not to let simple and stupid things like her hair irritate her.

During the past week, Dorcas hadn't really wondered what Kira had been up to. She wasn't sure if Kira had any friends apart from herself, Lily and Hestia. As she thought of it a little more, Kira never really mentioned anybody and that confused Dorcas a little bit. Dorcas was one for making as many connections as possible. She was quite independent and valued the calmness solitary could often offer her but she found it rather important to have someone to talk to. Even if she never really opened up that much. Even if it was just talking about the weather, the lake or chocolate frogs. Come to think of it, Dorcas wasn't even sure if Kira had ever really opened up to her. Dorcas' and Kira's friendship was the most strained out of the four of them. Dorcas knew Lily from first year and Hestia had been her contribution to the group but Kira? Dorcas had originally felt as if she had to become friends with her, seeing as Lily grew so close to her. Not that Dorcas had ever regretted it. Kira and Dorcas were polar opposites but they sort of found a balance in each other, even if the time they spent together away from the group was strained and a little awkward.

She was smiling as Kira played along with the joke, nodding her head as if she was starting to remember this 'Kira Fenwick'. Though, her smile quickly fell for a split second before she recovered, hoping Kira wouldn't pick it up. "Oh, my national identifier." She rolled her eyes slightly as she dropped the playfulness completely. She understood that everybody had an identifier, though, her's always seemed to make her think that everybody considered her a joke. On any other day she wouldn't have been so bitter about it. On any other day she would have smiled and nodded along as she would have mentally rolled her eyes but today, her irritable mood was causing cracks in her usual facade. It wasn't that she was fake because she wasn't. Dorcas' kindness was natural. It was something she couldn't help. She would have an argument with somebody and run back to them apologizing for yelling at them, even if she was still pissed. Dorcas couldn't really whine about her identifier, after all it summed her up perfectly. But her identifier seemed to affect the way people treated her. She felt that sometimes they tip toed around her, scared that something they said would hurt her feelings. Sometimes, she felt as if they thought she needed to be taken care of. The latter is what irritated her the most. She was a Gryffindor, she didn't need to be taken care of. Her father was an auror, she could just be as fierce as he was when she wanted to be. Maybe that's why she valued Narcissa's friendship so much. Narcissa never tip toed around her and she didn't see Dorcas as soft or weak.

By now, Dorcas was proficient in picking up the littlest things in a person's mannerism. It was a trait Dorcas had inherited from her mother and it came in handy sometimes. Dorcas picked up on Kira's eyes narrowing and she tried not to read too much into it. Knowing Kira, Dorcas thought she was coming up with all different theories of why she seemed irritable today and that just put her a little more on edge. She shrugged when Kira mentioned the so called generosity of their Defense teacher and redirected her line of sight to the activities out the window. She didn't turn back to her friend until she heard Kira's rather blunt statement about Narcissa. She felt her nails dig into her palms as she tried not to snap back. Normally, comments about Narcissa didn't bother her. She had become accustomed to hearing some back handed comments about her friend but today, considering the darkness that tended to grow deep down inside of her when she was stressed, she was just a step away of telling Kira to sod off. She looked at Kira, taken back by her comment as a darkness filled her hazel green eyes. She wasn't sure whether Kira meant it in the way it sounded but all the same it had hit a nerve. "Actually she did. But I don't know why it'd concern you. You've never been concerned about Narcissa's absentee record before." She paused, acknowledging the anger that was probably flooding her voice. She took a deep breath before continuing. "Actually, you've never been concerned about anything to do with Narcissa. I don't know why you'd start now." Dorcas wasn't sure what she was more upset about: the fact that Kira had come out with a rather bitchy remark or the realisation that Kira had never been interested in any of her friendships that didn't include her or the rest of their traditional clique.

"Saves us the trouble of protecting her, doesn't it?" Kira teased back in regards to James' unconventional way of keeping any other guy from Lily. Never in Kira's wildest dreams did Lily wind up properly falling for the git, though. She had to hand it to Potter. He certainly had a way of making her smile. Any former hints of reluctance Kira had about their relationship was debunked. Sure, she had to get used to doing things apart from Lily, the one within their clique she spent the most time with, but that was something she had time to work out. Seeing Lily so happy with someone who appeared to worship her existence was all she could hope for on behalf of her friend. "Good thing he doesn't. Lily seems to be enjoying the way things are now," she added in response to James not taking 'no' for an answer. "Besides, I've grown rather attached to that record player of hers."

While it was true Kira and Dorcas were hardly compatible prior to the merging of their group, she was slowly picking up on the fact Dorcas was closed off this afternoon. Her smiles seemed muted and her responses very forced. It made Kira incredibly uncomfortable, but she couldn't bring herself to leave the situation entirely. Even after Dorcas rolled her eyes about her 'national identifier.' Kira didn't see what was so bad about what she'd just said. Surely the fact Dorcas was too sweet for words wasn't that terrible, right? There were times Kira wished she could have that outlook on life and individuals as a whole. She found herself highly critical and guarded at the best of times, not for the sake of being an ass near as much as desiring to keep herself from anyone who could mean her wrong. To any on the outside looking in it was probably a bit ridiculous, but that was simply how Kira had managed to cope with things outside the scope of her control.

Kira kept quiet following the cold response from Dorcas only to find it continued to spiral downhill from there. Clearly her comment about Narcissa had not been received all that well, and Dorcas made a point to let her know. Before Kira had a chance to fully comprehend what was going on, her arms crossed over her chest as if it were a physical means of showing her counterpart she was closing herself off to the conversation. It wasn't an intentional nonverbal cue, but one that looked that way nevertheless. 'Right then, Dor. Why don't you tell me how you really feel?' she thought to herself. "Oh, no. You're right. My friend skiving off class for someone who has only ever shown an interest in herself certainly shouldn't concern me. Of course Narcissa had my friend's best interest in mind. She has a record of putting others first and laying herself down for the love of a mate." Kira could hardly help her response, but immediately after it had left her mouth, she began to regret it. For someone who so desperately clung to balance in her life, this was heading down a disastrous road with, no doubt, terrible outcomes. Kira closed her eyes briefly while she chewed on her lip, taking in a deep breath before looking back to Dorcas again. "Look, I'd better be going. That Muggle Studies essay isn't going to write itself," she lied, knowing full well she'd finished it up in Transfiguration earlier that week. Straightening her bag up on her arm again, Kira gave Dorcas one final look over before forcing an exasperated, tight-lipped smile and beginning to walk off. She didn't want to give Dorcas any further means of adding fuel to the fire, afraid of her own recoil if that were to happen.
