WHO: Roxie & Cassius
WHERE: Dog-Gone
WHAT: Roxie finally goes to work
WHEN: Mid-morning. She's not an early riser
RATING: Low, I assume

Roxanne had not exactly been doing her job lately. She would argue it wasn't her fault, since no one seemed too eager to have their pets' fortunes read. Realistically it was a bit of a scam, and Roxie knew that. Everything she said was going to be completely made up, and she was a bit confused why Rita had bothered to assigned a job such as 'Pet Psychic'. It would work in Roxie's favour that she was incredibly creative, otherwise she'd have been fired pretty quickly. She was certainly glad Rita assigned her this job over being a dentist or maid, or something. At least she could have fun with her job title, even if it was bogus.

When she woke up this morning, Roxie decided she'd take Mr. Cassius up on his offer. Maybe if he had too much work, she could do a bit of grooming. All young girls loved animals, and so Roxie was just happy she was working with them. Pulling on decent clothes, Roxie locked up her cottage and headed towards Dog-Gone. Within minutes she arrived outside the door. She pushed it open with more force than she'd realized, and it practically slammed against the wall. Gently closing it behind her, Roxie looked around. "Helllloooo!?" she called out, not sure where Cassius, or anyone, was.

If Roxie wasn't phased by Gellert Grindewald, there was no way she'd see through Cassius. Roxie simply believed for too deeply into good intentions. There was evil in this world, but everyone was good at heart. There was a way to save everyone, after all. If Tom Riddle had someone to love him, he'd have been nicer and wouldn't have gone on killing sprees. Everyone said Gellert was a bad wizard, but Roxie believed there was a way to save him. Maybe that's why she'd been brought here. It would be difficult though, since she'd promised two people she wouldn't speak with him.

Roxie grinned at the sight of the dog-toy. "That's fantastic!" she said, hardly able to contain her excitement. Being outside would be much nicer than in here, after all. Without waiting for confirmation, Roxie was already outside and was jogging a little bit off from the entrance. "Far enough?" she called and raised her hands into the air. Ah, childlike fun. There was something so simply joyous in tossing a ball around.

Cassius hadn't thrown a ball around since he was a child himself. He'd played a bit of Quidditch during his school years, but that had been training, not play. With a smile he didn't entirely feel, he followed her out the door into the street. He considered what people would think, and decided the exposure was harmless. They will see that I am a good man who plays with children he decided. As long as I maintain a certain degree of dignity, this is only beneficial.

Giving Roxie an affirmative gesture, Cassius pitched the mis-shaped projectile as far as he could. It went a bit askew, but Cassius was pleased that his arms still held some power.

To catch the ball Roxie had to jump, but it wasn't anything she wasn't used to. Her male cousins were constantly overestimating her height, and half the time balls sailed right over her head. After landing, Roxie tossed the ball back and forth between her hands. It wouldn't do her any good not to get a feel for the ball, after all. Once she was confident, Roxie threw it back to the man. It hardly reached him, but Roxie was proud that it did. Although she had a strong spirit and personality, her body didn't quite match up. There were only so many strong things a person could have, after all.

The girl laughed in enjoyment. Before Cassius threw the ball back to her, Roxanne stretched out her arms and spun in a circle. This town was much better than school. There was nothing to worry about here, and Roxie could certainly appreciate that.

Cassius could only stare at the girl, allowing his face to show indulgence amusement. Did real children do this kind of thing? Truly? He couldn't recall that sort of all-encompassing joyfulness, but it really seemed to be no act on Roxie's part.

Perhaps, he decided, it was a form of magical damage to the girl's mind?

He nodded to a couple passing by on the street. Perhaps they thought her his niece. Though in this place she could just as easily be his grandmother. Lockewood was a very odd place.

Being an energetic teenager, Roxie often got bored. After throwing around the ball for a bit, she was beginning to get bored. She threw it back to Cassius one last time, and then jogged over to him. What could they do now? With a wide yawn she tried to cover up, Roxie stood in front of the man she knew little about. Tilting her head to the side, she wondered who he was and what he had done. A smile crossed her lips. "Hey, why don't you tell me about wherever you came from? I'll bet, with all my cousins here, you know lots about my time. But I don't really know anything of yours. I mean mummy and daddy have told me lots about their time, but you probably don't come from there."

There was something oddly soothing about throwing the bit of rawhide back and forth between them, something almost hypnotic, but Cassius was still grateful when Roxie seemed to tire of it. When he'd invited her to the dog grooming parlor, he'd been expecting a young woman with a new business, not so much a girl in need of a playmate.

As she came running up to him, for one strange moment he thought she was about to hug him, and braced himself for the impact. But she only stopped a pace away with that curious-puppy expression and that un-self-conscious stream of words.

"You are from 2025, are you not?" So she'd said in the journals, at least. "So it's unlikely that I knew your parents or even your grandparents." Especially since I seem to have died soon after I was taken. "Why don't we go inside for a cup of tea and you can tell me about all these cousins of yours?" After all, Miss Roxie Weasley would need nothing else to loosen her tongue.

Roxie nodded with enthusiasm as Cassius asked his question. "2025, yep. When did you say you were from? Mum and Dad never talked about you, so I reckon you're right. And they knew a lot of people." Roxie grinned at the man, hoping that this wouldn't hurt his feelings. Maybe he had been unpopular, and he was the same age as her parents. She hadn't thought about that - and what if he was sad because Angelina and George didn't know him? Oh, that would be bad.

"Can it be iced tea?" Roxie questioned. Truthfully, she wasn't a huge fan of tea. It seemed that most everyone was, but she just didn't prefer hot drinks. They had a knack for burning her tongue. Roxanne preferred drinks with ice in them, and at the very least ones that came from a fridge. She followed the man back into the store, and found somewhere to sit.

"So," she began. "What do you want to know? I mean, I have a ton of cousins. Ten cousins and one brother, in fact. And they're all great in their own ways, of course."

The girl chattered along at his side as they entered the premises again. Cassius would have taken her elsewhere had he not been uncertain how much freedom Skeeter's edicts allowed. "I was taken in 1914, Miss Weasley, probably long before their time."

He found the idea of icing tea to be odd, but young Mr. Potter at the taco cart had such a thing, and he supposed it to be a youthful folly he could easily accommodate with sugar and a cooling charm. He pushed in her chair at the small table in the back of the shop and set the kettle boiling.

The girl surely knew more than she knew did, but Cassius didn't even know where to begin prying. After all, he knew nearly nothing of any of her kin. "I think I have known two men named Weasley in my life," he told her honestly, "and those in my youth. I find myself quite bewildered." Picking up a pencil, he pulled over a pieces of foolscap and started loosely sketching a family tree. "I do not know who your parents are, but I take it the long line of cousins are on your father's side..."

Roxie sat patiently while Cassius got everything prepared, and then watched as he picked up the pencil. Roxanne tilted her head in a curious way, similar to the way a dog would. It took her a moment to understand just what he was doing, but she grinned when it came to her. "Oh, yes. Daddy is the one with the big family. I don't know much of mum's side, I know her school friends though. They're all real nice. I think mum likes being part of the Weasley clan more though. I mean, who wouldn't right?"

Reaching for the pencil, Roxie took the pencil and paper from Cassius. She began with her Grandmum and Granddad (and labelled them as such), and filled in all the information she knew. Some of the birth years were wrong, but all the names were correct. When Roxanne finished, she offered the completed tree to Cassius. "I don't know too much about Grandmum and Granddad's families, you'd have to ask them yourself. I put stars beside the names of people I know are here, but there's a chance more of them are here. I mean, I've only been here a few days and haven't been stalking my journal for their writing or anything."

Roxie heard the pot boiling in the back, and let her gaze slip towards it. Her heart was full of innocence, and she didn't assume for one second that Cassius meant to use such a tree to his advantage, or for anything sinister at all. "What do you mean bewildered?" Roxie asked, remembering what the man before her had said moments ago.

Cassius stared a little, surprised by the readiness with which Roxie drew out her family tree. He took in each name and memorized it, noting the relationships. Many of the names on the tree were somewhat familiar... Roxie was, indeed, amid a large family here. But this was meant to be a casual conversation, so he tapped the boxes saying "Grandmum" and "Granddad." "I've a met a few people from my time," he said casually, "but I don't suppose your grandparents are from so far back? Do you know their given names?"

Standing, Cassius poured the tea into the pot to steep and then brought it over to the table. He summoned the other tea items- glasses, sugar, cream, spoons, saucers- as they spoke. "Well, quite a bit less bewildered now, I should say," he told the younger girl with a smile. "It's admirable how well you know your relations."

Roxanne nodded when Cassius asked about her grandparents. "Yepp, Molly and Arthur Weasley. I donno much about their families though, and I'm pretty sure they aren't from that far back. I mean, if they were they'd be ancient!" Roxie giggled at the thought, her grandparents being quite possibly 150 years old! That was absurd, even if wizards and witches often grew to ripe old ages.

When the tea was poured for her, Roxie put in some sugar and cream, but got her own wand out to cool the tea. She'd done this countless times by now, that it was one of the few charms she could cast silently. Well, it was one of the few charms that properly worked when she cast it silently. Roxie furrowed her eyebrows when Cassius mentioned how admirable she was. "Oh, I don't think so. I'd be a horrible person if I didn't know my family! Besides, we see each other lots. Grandmum loves to cook and provide for us. Christmas is always massive, but she often has one or two of our families over during the rest of the year. Plus I go to school with mostly all of them! And this tree doesn't account for Teddy and all the other children we've managed to pick up, like Lysander and Lorcan."

Cassius made a helpless little motion with his hands, as if to express What can I do? "I'm afraid I don't know your grandparents, no. The majority of residents in Lockewood seem to have arrived between the years of, perhaps, 1970 and 2020. I am a little odd in that respect, I suppose."

He watched her sweeten and cool the tea, not wrinkling his nose at the distastefulness. He had no cause to shape this girl, only to befriend her, as he'd been doing with many others in this town.

He had not realized the close family ties between so many of the inhabitants until she had filled in the tree for him. That might makes things complicated. So be it. "Teddy?" he asked, his eyebrows high, and studying the tree dramatically, even as she'd said he would not be there. "Lysander? Lorcan?"

"That must be hard," Roxie commented. She couldn't imagine showing up here and not knowing anyone. It must have been terribly strange to arrive in a city full of people from the future! It had been strange enough for Roxie to learn there were people of the past, but at least she'd been able to read about the past. Poor Cassius didn't know anything, he didn't even know it existed! Yes, this was a very strange place.

Roxanne laughed when Cassius returned his attention to the tree. "No silly, they aren't there. Teddy is Uncle Harry's godson. His parents died in the war, so Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny helped to raise him. His grandmum did a lot of it too, but I grew up with Teddy always around. He was a bit of an older brother. He's a bunch of years older than me, but that's alright. He's always been good to go to for advice and that sort. Lysander and Lorcan are twins born to Luna Lovegood. Sometimes I call her Aunt, but she's not really. She's good friends of Uncle Harry, Aunt Ginny, Uncle Ron, and Aunt Hermione. In fact, one of my cousins has her name for her middle name - Lily Luna Potter. So the Lovegood twins are over lots, even though they aren't related. Everyone loves us, you see. Since we're so majestic and fantastic. It's hard not to, really. I'll bet you like all the Weasleys you've met here!"

She felt badly for him, he realized. She... pitied him? That was a new and strange situation and not one he entirely liked. No one had pitied him since the fire... and they had no cause to, of course. That would just be silly. But Roxanne Weasley was clearly a very silly girl with a shallow understanding of the world!

"I'm afraid," he said, his face as guileless as he could make it, even as he slotted in the new names on the diagram, "that I don't really know your family to like or dislike them. Considering your own affable and charming nature, I suspect I would like them quite well well, though. Would you care for biscuits to go with your tea?"

Roxie listened to his words, though she didn't process them all. Suddenly she stood on her feet, forgetting about her tea and the family tree. "Well then, Mr. Everguard, we ought to get you acquainted! We're all rather nice and accepting people. Besides, almost all of us adore animals, so I'm sure they'd really like to know a dog groomer. And since we're in business together, they're going to have to get to know you. Have you met my mother yet? I'll bet she'd really appreciate meeting the man I'm about to spend my days with. Or Uncle Fred? I still haven't met him, but Daddy always told me magnificent stories about the two of them! Oh, Uncle Fred is just simply fantastic. Or Grandmum, she's pretty fly too. Or you know what, you could just close your eyes and point at a name. We're practically all here, and if you pick someone whom isn't, we'll just try again."

On her face was a plain and bright smile. Her words rushed out quickly, but they were all easy to make out.

It wasn't the first time anyone had gushed over Cassius, but Roxie was something of a force of nature. How did they go from '25% of a fortune' to playing ball to 'the man I'm about to spend my days with?' When in Tartarus had that come about? It was so completely unexpected that he wasn't sure how to counter it.

He opened his mouth, about to say something about the extent of their business partnership, when she bowled him over with the rest of her offers of introductions. If my connections at the Ministry could see him now he thought distantly. Brought to gape mouthed incredulity by a slip young enough to be my daughter.

Cassius needed a moment to get his head together, to figure out just what had happened in the last two minutes. Unsure what else to do, he placed a finger on the diagram and glanced down.

When Cassius didn't move, Roxie put a hand on her hip. She was confused, didn't he want to meet her family? She clicked her tongue and thought it over. He must be nervous was all. Perhaps he just wasn't ready to meet such overwhelming people. Roxie knew first hand that sometimes the Weasleys were a bit much, herself included. Maybe meeting her would be enough for today. Roxanne moved back to the chair she was previous sitting in, and sat back down. "Sorry Cassius," Roxie said, realizing now her mistake. "I'll bet this isn't easy for you. I'm sure you miss your own family and don't want to go gallivanting off with mine. I'll just bring my mum into the store one day, and you can meet her that way. As for the others, I'm quite certain you'll see them out and about on the streets. You just haven't been here long enough."

With that, Roxie reached for her cooled tea, and took a long and generous sip. "Why don't you tell me about your family?"

Cassius looked away from the girl when he said, "My family is dead." It was mostly true before he left, and decided true if they were in the future. He didn't want her to see him expression, though. It was not that he wished to hide sadness in his face, but that he did not want her to see the lack of tender emotion. She had led him on such a merry chase so far that he wasn't sure he could school his face into the correct emotion.

He needed to get control of this conversation again. Somewhere this had gone terrible wrong. Still keeping his face tilted away from her, he said, "if you would pardon me for a moment," and left the intimacy of the back room. Perhaps when he returned they could address this whole business of her spending her days at this shop.

Roxie's expression darkened when Cassius mentioned his family. Now she felt horrible for bringing it up - she couldn't imagine anyone in her family being dead, let alone all of them. She let him go to the back without question, and felt a bit sad herself. Frowning, she stood up and walked towards the door. "Cassius," she called, "I think it might be best if I take off. I'm sorry..." she drifted off, not really sure what to say. Maybe tomorrow she would bring flowers, but there wasn't anything left to do today. Grief was a pretty tough emotion, and Roxie knew you couldn't rush it. Cassius just needed time, but he also needed time alone.

Glancing back around, Cassius was surprised by the strength of Roxie's reaction. He hadn't intended to drive her from the shop, but... this could work, too, so long as he hadn't frightened her too badly.

"I do apologize, Miss Weasley," he said, his voice all sincerity. "I've been a terrible host." He reached out a hand to her. "This is not the welcome I meant to give you to Lockewood."

Roxie turned back towards Cassius as he spoke. She instinctively took his hand when he reached out to her. "Oh... well, that's okay Mr. Evergaurd," Roxie said, suddenly finding formality in their conversation (and of course, getting his name wrong again). "I mean, I've been here a couple days now." She turned back towards him, and took her hand off the door. "I'm sorry for bringing them up too."

Everard he thought at her viciously, infuriated by her ready ignorance, but he kept his face calm and kind. "You had no way of knowing," he said, giving her hand a little squeeze, "that it was a... difficult topic for me. I hope you'll forgive me my lapse. Perhaps you will call again so we may discuss your ideas for our businesses?"

Roxie squeezed his hand in return, and nodded with big open eyes. "Of course, I'm sure I'll be by tomorrow. I mean, if it's okay with you and stuff." Without warning, Roxie got up onto her tippy-toes and kissed Cassius' cheek. "I hope you're feeling better then too." Dropping his hand, Roxie turned towards the door and left. Of course, before leaving she smiled for one last time.
