WHO: Roxie & Cassius
WHERE: Dog-Gone
WHAT: Roxie finally goes to work
WHEN: Mid-morning. She's not an early riser
RATING: Low, I assume

Roxanne had not exactly been doing her job lately. She would argue it wasn't her fault, since no one seemed too eager to have their pets' fortunes read. Realistically it was a bit of a scam, and Roxie knew that. Everything she said was going to be completely made up, and she was a bit confused why Rita had bothered to assigned a job such as 'Pet Psychic'. It would work in Roxie's favour that she was incredibly creative, otherwise she'd have been fired pretty quickly. She was certainly glad Rita assigned her this job over being a dentist or maid, or something. At least she could have fun with her job title, even if it was bogus.

When she woke up this morning, Roxie decided she'd take Mr. Cassius up on his offer. Maybe if he had too much work, she could do a bit of grooming. All young girls loved animals, and so Roxie was just happy she was working with them. Pulling on decent clothes, Roxie locked up her cottage and headed towards Dog-Gone. Within minutes she arrived outside the door. She pushed it open with more force than she'd realized, and it practically slammed against the wall. Gently closing it behind her, Roxie looked around. "Helllloooo!?" she called out, not sure where Cassius, or anyone, was.

Roxie listened to his words, though she didn't process them all. Suddenly she stood on her feet, forgetting about her tea and the family tree. "Well then, Mr. Everguard, we ought to get you acquainted! We're all rather nice and accepting people. Besides, almost all of us adore animals, so I'm sure they'd really like to know a dog groomer. And since we're in business together, they're going to have to get to know you. Have you met my mother yet? I'll bet she'd really appreciate meeting the man I'm about to spend my days with. Or Uncle Fred? I still haven't met him, but Daddy always told me magnificent stories about the two of them! Oh, Uncle Fred is just simply fantastic. Or Grandmum, she's pretty fly too. Or you know what, you could just close your eyes and point at a name. We're practically all here, and if you pick someone whom isn't, we'll just try again."

On her face was a plain and bright smile. Her words rushed out quickly, but they were all easy to make out.

It wasn't the first time anyone had gushed over Cassius, but Roxie was something of a force of nature. How did they go from '25% of a fortune' to playing ball to 'the man I'm about to spend my days with?' When in Tartarus had that come about? It was so completely unexpected that he wasn't sure how to counter it.

He opened his mouth, about to say something about the extent of their business partnership, when she bowled him over with the rest of her offers of introductions. If my connections at the Ministry could see him now he thought distantly. Brought to gape mouthed incredulity by a slip young enough to be my daughter.

Cassius needed a moment to get his head together, to figure out just what had happened in the last two minutes. Unsure what else to do, he placed a finger on the diagram and glanced down.

When Cassius didn't move, Roxie put a hand on her hip. She was confused, didn't he want to meet her family? She clicked her tongue and thought it over. He must be nervous was all. Perhaps he just wasn't ready to meet such overwhelming people. Roxie knew first hand that sometimes the Weasleys were a bit much, herself included. Maybe meeting her would be enough for today. Roxanne moved back to the chair she was previous sitting in, and sat back down. "Sorry Cassius," Roxie said, realizing now her mistake. "I'll bet this isn't easy for you. I'm sure you miss your own family and don't want to go gallivanting off with mine. I'll just bring my mum into the store one day, and you can meet her that way. As for the others, I'm quite certain you'll see them out and about on the streets. You just haven't been here long enough."

With that, Roxie reached for her cooled tea, and took a long and generous sip. "Why don't you tell me about your family?"

Cassius looked away from the girl when he said, "My family is dead." It was mostly true before he left, and decided true if they were in the future. He didn't want her to see him expression, though. It was not that he wished to hide sadness in his face, but that he did not want her to see the lack of tender emotion. She had led him on such a merry chase so far that he wasn't sure he could school his face into the correct emotion.

He needed to get control of this conversation again. Somewhere this had gone terrible wrong. Still keeping his face tilted away from her, he said, "if you would pardon me for a moment," and left the intimacy of the back room. Perhaps when he returned they could address this whole business of her spending her days at this shop.

Roxie's expression darkened when Cassius mentioned his family. Now she felt horrible for bringing it up - she couldn't imagine anyone in her family being dead, let alone all of them. She let him go to the back without question, and felt a bit sad herself. Frowning, she stood up and walked towards the door. "Cassius," she called, "I think it might be best if I take off. I'm sorry..." she drifted off, not really sure what to say. Maybe tomorrow she would bring flowers, but there wasn't anything left to do today. Grief was a pretty tough emotion, and Roxie knew you couldn't rush it. Cassius just needed time, but he also needed time alone.

Glancing back around, Cassius was surprised by the strength of Roxie's reaction. He hadn't intended to drive her from the shop, but... this could work, too, so long as he hadn't frightened her too badly.

"I do apologize, Miss Weasley," he said, his voice all sincerity. "I've been a terrible host." He reached out a hand to her. "This is not the welcome I meant to give you to Lockewood."

Roxie turned back towards Cassius as he spoke. She instinctively took his hand when he reached out to her. "Oh... well, that's okay Mr. Evergaurd," Roxie said, suddenly finding formality in their conversation (and of course, getting his name wrong again). "I mean, I've been here a couple days now." She turned back towards him, and took her hand off the door. "I'm sorry for bringing them up too."

Everard he thought at her viciously, infuriated by her ready ignorance, but he kept his face calm and kind. "You had no way of knowing," he said, giving her hand a little squeeze, "that it was a... difficult topic for me. I hope you'll forgive me my lapse. Perhaps you will call again so we may discuss your ideas for our businesses?"

Roxie squeezed his hand in return, and nodded with big open eyes. "Of course, I'm sure I'll be by tomorrow. I mean, if it's okay with you and stuff." Without warning, Roxie got up onto her tippy-toes and kissed Cassius' cheek. "I hope you're feeling better then too." Dropping his hand, Roxie turned towards the door and left. Of course, before leaving she smiled for one last time.
