The horoscope today said things would go my way
Who: Kiley Ricks
Where: Kiley's house
When: Late morning
It had been a while since Kiley had woken up in a good mood. Too many nights lately she'd stayed up because she couldn't sleep, thinking about Cedric, hoping he was still okay, that his brother hadn't done all the things Cedric feared he would. She tried everything to get her mind off things - movies, video games, whatever worked. Sometimes it helped, and sometimes it didn't.
But last night Corwin had been home, they'd ordered a pizza, and she and her brother just chilled. Having someone around made it easier. Corwin had even indulged her in some old school Super Mario (because yes, Kiley still owned her Super Nintendo, and like hell she'd ever sell the thing) and they spent the night passing the controller back and forth, Corwin inventing a slew of new curses every time he couldn't beat a level. This - along with keeping in touch with her friends - was what would help her the most.
She slept until almost 10 the next morning, only waking up because of the emergency alarm she'd set the night before, just to make sure she'd have enough time to get ready before she had to leave for work. And the first thought on her mind wasn't Ced, it was about working, about starting her day, about seeing if she could make plans to do something over the weekend. She actually had Saturday off, why shouldn't she enjoy that? That, in and of itself, was a refreshing change, one she didn't realize until it actually happened.
Over breakfast - more like brunch, really, especially since she was eating leftover pizza to go with her coffee - Kiley was scrolling through her phone, looking through old texts to pass the time. There were a bunch from Morghan, some from Alanna and Roxy - and then she found the ones Cedric had sent her, from the last demon attack. Her heart stopped for a second. She'd realized they were there, of course, she hadn't forgotten - but she hadn't read them since he'd left. And she hadn't intended on doing so, either.
He left you, remember? Who cares what he thinks of you now?
Her fingers hovered over the delete button.
He's not coming back. It doesn't do any good to keep lingering on something that's only going to hurt you more in the long run.
Cedric was gone. He'd made that decision for himself, looking out for his own safety, and that of his sister. Leaving might be keeping Kiley safe, too, but she didn't know that for sure. And she'd spent too much time worrying about all of that, and not about the things that mattered. She knew she hadn't run into any other Brits besides Cedric himself, not before he'd warned her about Westley, and not afterward, either.
She wasn't going to do this anymore; Kiley was done. With one click, Cedric's messages were gone. A few more scrolls, and she deleted his number out of her phone, too. The few pictures she'd taken of them together, for as brief a time as that was, were already on her computer, so those met their grave as well. If he really, truly wanted to call her, then he could, but she wasn't going to wait on him anymore. Her number wouldn't change, and she would stop checking it every five minutes, "just in case." It was time to move on.
What good was hanging onto the past going to do her? Absolutely nothing, and she knew it. Sometimes, no matter how many times someone said those words to you, it always meant more when you came to that conclusion yourself.
As she was getting ready for work, she wondered again what she'd do with with her Saturday off, who might be around to do something. Kiley had said for months that she wasn't going to stay in her house all the time, and while granted everyone had been kept in because of the vampire bullshit recently, she'd yet to really get on that. That was going to change as of now.
Maybe she'd give Morghan a call.
