Take the glitz back, I want the soul instead
Who: Kiley and Darcy
Where: Darcy's apartment
When: Lunchtime
What: Pizza, Nerdy Time, Girl Talk and planning
When Kiley had arrived, Darcy had given her a welcome hug. Sure, she was still upset over Austin. It would take some time for her to fully get over that, but it was for the best and it really needed to happen. She knew it was going too fast. Her head wasn't on straight. Maybe, down the line, they could be friends. But that too would take time. So time with friends would be good. And she was going to be taking Chase's advice. And she was going to be looking for a roommate. Darcy needed a change and she was going to get it.
With her powers and Kiley's help, she moved her desk into her bedroom and left the spare room to be cleaned up later so that she could take pictures to email to someone. So the pizza came and they sat down in the living room to eat and be nerdy. Halfway through War Stories, Darcy leaned back and looked over at her friend. "Okay, time to spill about this Brit who's BBQ we're going to this weekend."
Kiley was more than happy to spend the afternoon with Darcy, indulging in a Firefly marathon and pizza in exchange for helping move a few pieces of furniture. It would be good for Darcy to get a roommate, have a little change in her life. Change her friend was ready for, at least in Kiley's opinion. If moving things around helped with that, Kiley was more than willing to pitch in.
At the moment, all her attention was on the screen - it was hard not to be distracted by Mal, or Wash, or Jayne... pretty much all the boys but Simon, who Kiley varied between loving and hating, depending on the episode. And Book was just badass in his own right. Hearing Darcy's questions, Kiley blinked for a second, almost spitting out the soda she was drinking. Nothing like subtlety, was there? "Um, okay, hold on," she said, wiping her mouth with a nearby napkin. "His name is Cedric, and he's a nurse, up at the University of Michigan Hospital." She eyed her friend over her glass, "You're not going to be mad if I don't know his entire life story, are you?"
Cedric. Nurse. All information she had the day before. Well, maybe not his name, but still. Kiley didn't seem to have a lot of info about him. As much as her weary body would allow, she tucked her legs up a little. "Do you know any more than that?" she asked, curious. Mad, no. A little disappointed, maybe. She was going to be meeting this guy tomorrow and she wanted to make sure she had some facts before she got there. Other than he was cute and British and a caffeine addict. Darcy was the kind of woman who liked to be prepared.
Taking a sip of her drink, she watched Kiley. "Okay, so if you don't have much more than that, explain to me what happened yesterday to earn us much welcome plans and you a possible date?"
Kiley took a moment to think about it. "His sister's just arrived from England," she said, slowly. "Some sort of family problems, I guess, so she's going to be staying with him for a while. She's young, like 16 or 17. And if I remember correctly, he's got a few brothers, too." At least one of whom was not the nicest of people, but that really wasn't something Kiley needed to mention right now, especially as Cedric had been kind of vague on that point.
She leaned back a little, taking a sip of her soda. It was Diet Coke, normally she didn't want the extra caffeine, but as she was going out tonight, it seemed like a good idea at the time. "He came in as I was getting out of work, asked me to sit with him for a few minutes. We've talked at work before, so it's not like I don't know him or anything, but he mentioned that his sister talked him into this barbeque and that he wanted to know if I'd stop by. Said I could bring a friend." She chuckled at the memory, "I mentioned you and he thought Darcy was my boyfriend's name."
So he's taking care of his little sister. Interesting. That earned him points for being a good man in her book. Darcy, of course, being Darcy, was curious about him. She wanted to know more about how he was around her friend, about how he was in general. But Kiley didn't seem to be giving much information. And she knew it was partly because she didn't have it and partly because she hadn't been looking at whatever she and Cedric had as anything more than friends at the very most.
Darcy laughed. "God, you wish. You know he's my version of Han Solo right? That I've been in love with Mr. Darcy about as long as you have him?" They were best friends for a reason. One of those reasons was the fact that they were both nerds. But she was trying to focus on more pressing matters. "Aww, so he instantly assumed you had a man? Did he seem disappointed when he said that I was your boyfriend?"
No, Kiley hadn't even begun to entertain ideas about the British man being anything more than a customer with a serious caffeine addiction who came into work all the time. Of course you picked up bits and pieces of knowledge about a person in that time - what his drink was (quad venti extra hot skinny vanilla latte), where he worked, that sort of thing.
"Okay, so your fantasy boy is a cocky Englishman and I want a cocky space pirate. Think there's a correlation here," she pointed out, laughing. "I think he was fishing for information, actually. He asked how long we'd been dating." Had he seemed disappointed? Maybe, but she couldn't remember. She'd just been freaked out by the assumption that she'd be dating someone. That idea in and of itself was kind of ridiculous.
The brunette was the kind of girl who still believed in fairy tales, of prince charming and anything else that could have been considered the adult version of Santa Clause. So the fact that her friend had a date was a big deal for her. After all, she'd thought that the way she met Austin was romantic and sweet. Yes, it had been too fast and it hadn't been right, but still. She still wanted that, the whole being swept off her feet bit. It would happen for her soon. She was sure of it.
Darcy laughed. "Suppose there is." She took another slice of pizza. "Fishing huh? Well, that would explain why he wasn't disappointed right off the bat. He seem happy to learn not only was I a girl, but I was your BFF?" she asked, arching an eyebrow.
If Darcy still believed in fairy tales, then Kiley still believed she'd find herself a real life Han Solo. Really, there were worse goals to have in life, all things considered. Han was a scoundrel with a good heart underneath it all, proved it when he came back to help Luke destroy the Death Star. He didn't necessarily have to sweep her off her feet. He just had to be willing to stand by her, and defend her. And be charming as all hell while he was at it.
"It was more like he was embarrassed that he assumed. You know, open mouth, insert foot?" It actually had been kind of adorable, now that Kiley thought about it. "He got all sheepish, really. And then we sat down at a table and talked for a little bit. During which plans for said date kind of formed... though it's all kind of up in the air at the moment."
"Aww, did he really? That's so cute!" Oh yeah, he definitely had a thing for the redhead. Darcy grinned at her. "Okay, you have to explain to me the date started because that's the important part. After you got off work, he asked if you would sit down and you guys talked? About what?" All her focus was on her friend. She was already running through possible outfits in her head about what Kiley could wear to the barbecue and on this date. The brunette was a planner and she was definitely planning something for her friend. Maybe a skirt? Oh, or a longer dress. Then again, Darcy didn't know how far down the scars went.
Kiley had, honest to god, forgotten what it was like to have girlfriends like Darcy, who wanted to know every little detail about what happened in situations like this. That was one bonus to having guys as friends, they often times didn't ask what was going on unless it was something really major, so when you wanted to keep something to yourself for a while, you were totally good to go. "We sat, we talked. About the fact that his sister's living with him now from England and just catching up, I guess. I didn't tell him about the demons, though. I figured that was one better left unsaid, for now." Understatement of the year, right there.
All safe topics. So he was nervous maybe. But he liked her friend. And the barbecue would definitely tell her that for sure. "Fair enough. Probably not first date talk either." She was half teasing but it fell kind of flat. It was hard to joke about demons. Especially given what the two women had been through. But she wasn't going to let the conversation turn to that. "Alright, more important question. What are you going to wear?" They could start with the barbecue and work their way up to this date she was going on. Darcy was completely convinced it was a date at this point.
"No, definitely not. There's a lot of things that aren't going to be brought up then either." Like the fact that Kiley was a were now, nope, definitely not going to be going into that on a date. She honestly had no idea what Cedric would even think of what she was, if he'd be scared, if he'd be accepting of it. At least they were going out before the moon, before she was going to have to face the fact that she was going to turn into a monster again. "What I'm going to wear?" Kiley blinked at Darcy. "Uh.... clothes?" Honestly? She hadn't thought that far ahead yet.
"Clothes? Seriously?" She shook her head. "Darling, I love you, but you're going to his house for a barbecue and and then on a date. Clothes, while obvious, is too vague. Are we going to put you in a long skirt, maybe? Something cute?" Darcy didn't have anyone to get dressed up for on her own but she could live vicariously through her best friend. It sounded like this Brit was a nice guy and she wanted Kiley to be happy. So of course, her first thought was to dress her well. That was really the only thing she could do while her friend was on a date.
Kiley just looked over at Darcy, blinking. "I have no idea," she admitted, trying to hide the fact that she was obviously quite bad at being a girl by focusing on the TV screen. Really, was there a problem that Mal "Captain Tightpants" Reynolds couldn't fix? Nope, she thought not. "I don't wear a lot of skirts anymore. No dresses, either." Nothing that would show off her scars, the fact that she was different than she used to be. She'd met Cedric before she was turned, when he first arrived from England. She didn't want him to realize she'd changed at all, like there was something "wrong" with her now.
Malcolm Reynolds, no matter how hot, could not get the woman ready for a date. Unless Cedric was a fan, in which case, maybe it could. But Darcy was doubting that and she put her hand on her friend's knee. "Sweetie, what if we try a longer skirt? I'm not suggesting that we jump into mini skirts or something. You and I both know that's you and if he doesn't than he's an idiot. I was thinking something to like here," she said, hand moving to right above her own knee. "We could look in my closet, see if anything works, but if we're not sure if this is a date and you want it to be one? A skirt says date. Trust me." She smiled at her, hoping she was being reassuring. Darcy didn't see what happened to the redhead as making it so she was broken now, that there was something that she should be ashamed of. It wasn't her fault and it was something that was a part of her now. This guy better not freak when he found out because Darcy would kick his British butt.
The last time Kiley had worn a skirt was to Vol's funeral, the day after the first demon attack. And even then, she'd made sure her boots came up to almost her knees, so there was a minimal amount of skin showing. Maybe she could consider it a "side effect" of being turned, but even though it was July, she wasn't about to show off any more than she absolutely had to. All it took was a bit of the scars to show and sooner or later, someone would ask how she got it. "I'd have to see the skirt," she said, making a little face at the thought. "And the skirt would definitely be for Sunday. Definitely pants at the barbeque." Nicer ones, of course, Kiley did own pieces besides jeans and nerd shirts, but still. She didn't have Darcy's fashion sense and would never claim to be knowledgeable in that respect. "And I guess we can look through your closet?"
She stood up and held out a hand to her best friend. "Looking won't kill you and I promise not to pull out anything that is too short. Scouts honor." Grinning, she was already mentally running through her clothes in her closet, wondering what would and wouldn't work for Kiley's date. Darcy would concede to pants at the barbecue if she wore a skirt to the date. And she was confident she could find something that worked for the redhead, both for her sense of style and what she had to conceal. "You just have to agree to at least hold everything up against you to check, deal?"
Making a face, Kiley took Darcy's hand and stood up, brushing some unseen dust off her jeans. "Okay, okay, I'll look! But I reserve the right to say no to whatever I don't like. I don't have the same sense of style as you, remember?" In that Darcy actually had a style about her and Kiley still dressed like a teenage boy. Whatever, she wasn't going to argue the details at the moment. Tucking her hair behind her ears, she followed Darcy up into her room, wondering what her friend was going to show her first.
