It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.
Who: Kiley Ricks, Corwin Ricks (NPC) and vague flashes of the were that attacked them
When: The night of June 18, 2008, into the following day
Where: The Ricks campsite just outside of Scarlet Oak / The University of Michigan Hospital
What: Kiley doesn't remember everything that happened that night; she just knows what came afterward.
She remembered the howls off in the distance, the ones she shrugged off before putting her headphones on and going to sleep. The campsite was safe; they’d seen nothing but squirrels and some birds the entire week.
She remembered shutting the iPod off when sleep finally came, though she forgot to take the earbuds out before her head hit the pillow.
She remembered her mother’s scream first, high pitched and wailing, as if from a nightmare. She remembered laying awake in her sleeping bag, waiting to hear something else, but no sound ever came.
She remembered unzipping the bag and moving toward the exit of the tent she shared with her brother. Was everything alright? One of her headphones still dangled from her ear and she plucked it out, tossing it aside.
She remembered the rustling noises outside the tent, and another howl. There was a rush of cool night air and the words caught in her throat at the sight – all she saw were teeth, and claws, and the blood starting to clot in its fur, illuminated by the full moon.
She didn’t remember if she ran or not, if she even had time to react. But she would never forget the pain of being caught by the beast – like fire burning in her arm from the elbow down, her entire left side torn open. The blood was warm and sticky and there was more of it than she thought possible, covering what had been her sleeping bag.
Somewhere around this point, Kiley Anne Ricks remembered being grateful for passing out.
