Happy Father's Day
Who: Charlotte
When: Morning
Where: Auburn Hills, MI
Charlotte had not yet seen her crazy golden invitation to the Moriarty mansion. She had been out. Father's Day usually bummed her out a little, along with the obvious dates: her dad's birthday, the anniversary of his death. When she lived in Auburn Hills, she'd made a point of going to his grave. And now that his grave was a little over an hour away, she went anyway. It was kind of silly, an earth elemental using up gas just to sit at a grave for a while, but it was important to Charlotte. And screw it, she had a hybrid. So when she woke up, she grabbed her keys and went.
She paid very little attention to the drizzle of rain, but for the hope that Ransom wasn't on edge by it. She should have called him before leaving, make sure he was doing okay first. Maybe he even would have wanted to come with her, but it just seemed like the sort of thing she had to do by herself.
She remembered the way to his grave. She'd never had any trouble finding it. She always visited at least three times a year. It was in a nice place, and near a big oak tree. When she reached his headstone, it was under the shade of the branches, and they served as a partial umbrella from the occasional drop of rain.
She felt the same way she always did when she looked at his headstone. Sad, and a little empty. As a girl she'd been told that the loss would get easier and not hurt so much. To a lesser degree, it was true, but some voids could never be filled.
