Does that mean I'm yours now?
Who: Tayne and Rowena
When: Morning
Where: A coffee shop
Rowena had given Tayne a call that morning to see about dropping his books off for him. Setting up a little meeting at a local coffee shop so they could share some coffee, conversation and maybe one of those nifty little croissants. Rowena arrived first, the books in her messenger bag and found a seat near the back. It wasn't busy inside the shop which was nice, but when talking about sensitive subjects like weredom, Rowena liked her privacy. Settling herself into her seat, she waited for Tayne to arrive.
It was earlier than Tayne really wanted to be up, though he was anyway since he had a housemate now and it tended to wake him up earlier than he'd have liked. Plus, if it was early enough, once he finished here he could go home and finish up Krist's bedroom.
First, though, coffee and a donut or two with Rowena, to pick up his books and chat. He drove over, promising Krist he'd be home soon, and parked outside, wandering in all hunched up in case it rained on him. Him and his cowboy hat, which he wore today to keep the potential rain off of him. He spotted Rowena when he got in, waved, and stopped by her table to ask, "What you want? I'll go pick it up for us."
"A coffee." she smiled. "Two sugars, two creamer thingies and one of those croissants." she smiled. "Here, lemme get you a couple dollars for that." Rowena said, reaching into her bag to find her wallet and pulling out enough for her part of the order.
Since Tayne was living off a part-time salary and paying for huge-ass Krist as well as himself, he swallowed his pride and took the money. "Thanks. Be right back." He grinned at her and headed to the counter. He came back with his mocha-- yeah, yeah, he liked chocolate in his coffee; so what?-- and her coffee with sugars and creamers, plus her healthy breakfast and his not-so-healthy breakfast. His was, indeed, two donuts, one chocolate and covered in sprinkles and the other vanilla with a chocolate glaze.
Tayne liked his chocolate.
The donuts smelled wonderful, but being a mother had Rowena always watching what she ate. There were a couple of reasons for this, like keeping Caius from wanting a donut when he needed to eat some eggs or a high in fiber cereal, and of course the whole not gaining unneeded pounds too. Both were important. "Thank you." she smiled, accepting the coffee and starting to put her creams and sugar into the cup. "I have finally finished with your books." she said. "And I understand a whole lot more than I did before." she admitted. "Which is just splendid. Now if I could just figure out how to shift on my own..." she mumbled. "How're you? What've you been up to?"
"I wish I could help, but I don't even have the option yet," Tayne said apologetically. "All my born-were friends think it should be completely natural and easy, but I don't know that it will be, especially if you can't figure out how...." He shook his head, sitting down and taking a big bite of one of the donuts. Mmmm, chocolatey goodness. "I'm okay, though. Bit harried. Got a new housemate, wouldn't be surprised if you could smell him on me. Trying to figure out how to make that work in the long term."
"I guess I just haven't really tried it much." Rowena admitted. "I mean I just haven't sat around trying to make it happen or anything. I suppose I can't expect to be able to do it if I don't take the time to try it more." Peeling off a bit of croissant, she chewed at that and shrugged a little. "A new housemate?" she smiled. "Well that's nice. Do you like having someone around?" she questioned. That made her think about Noah. Her housemate of sorts. Of course the smile that often came with thinking of him fluttered over her lips, but she didn't say anything about him just yet. She hated to bog people down with her relationship gushing after all.
Oh, well, if she hadn't tried, maybe it'd be easier than Tayne was afraid of, then... but maybe not, either. He probably would've tried immediately, as soon as it was possible for him to try, just to see what it was like. But that was him. "Yeah, new housemate... I suppose it's okay. He's a nice guy, a little weird, though. And apparently what I am is a little territorial, cuz I'm feeling a bit crowded." He gave her a sheepish grin before having another bite of donut.
"I'm horribly territorial." Rowena admitted. "Noah took me out for dinner and dancing..." she began. "And this woman practically threw herself at him and I found angry annoyance that I'd never felt before in my life. At least I didn't hurt her." she sighed. "How long is he staying?" she questioned. Maybe if he wasn't going to be around that long, it wouldn't be a big deal. A few tough days and he'd get his house back. Maybe.
"Probably a very long time," Tayne sighed. "He's... well, his situation's kinda unusual. He pretty much spent his whole life in animal form, and I'm kind of... teaching him how to be human, I g-guess you would say. He tried to pay me rent the other day?" He had to grin some. "He gave me about five dollars. And a purse. Because he just has no concept of money."
Rowena blinked a little at that and shook her head. "Well the poor guy." she said. "I can't imagine how he must be handling all that. You're really far too nice for your own good sometimes, sweetheart. A lot of people wouldn't open their homes and hearts to someone like you do. It's really wonderful to know that there are still people that care about others. It can't be entirely convenient for you, I'm sure."
"It's not," Tayne agreed, with a little bit of a blush for all the compliments. "I just... didn't wanna turn him away. He's been passed around so many times, I didn't wanna make that worse, y'know? By sending him off somewhere else. I just hope it stays... I dunno know, safe for him. I'm a big-ass predator, and he's a horse." Though things had been going okay so far, thank god... this was probably the safest time, though, what with the new moon tomorrow, and two whole weeks until the full.
A horse. Rowena tried to picture a werehorse in a house and couldn't help but think of the old television show, Mr. Ed or something like that. She bit back the laugh that bubbled up within her and shook her head. "Well I have yet to see you really lose your temper and I bit you..." she whispered. "If anyone shoulda got a temper tantrum from you, it shoulda been me so I doubt that you're going to just attack him or anything, but I do understand your concern. Maybe it won't be long before he figures things out." she said hopefully.
Tayne was less worried about his temper and more worried about hunting instincts. But he smiled and said, "Hopefully." Though he did kind of doubt it. He'd just deal for as long as he could, or as long as it was safe, and hope he got used to it. Maybe he'd start thinking of Krist as some kind of... damn, he didn't know. Cub? Regardless, it was time for a subject change! "So did I tell you, I found out what I am? Or, well, someone else smelled me and says I'm the same thing he is, anyway."
"You did?" she smiled. Rowena wasn't certain if he told her or not, but she didn't believe that he had. "What are you? I mean you just said you were a predator, and I knew large cat of some form... thanks to your books..." she smiled. "So what are you?"
"A tiger," Tayne answered, after a big bite of donut. He still had mixed feelings-- but given what little he knew about cats, tiger did seem the best fit. If he had to be a cat, he supposed a tiger was okay. "I need to pick up a book on 'em... I don't know much, yet. Just that they're big and eat a lot, and have stripes. You know, basic shit like that...."
Rowena smiled. "I don't know much about lynxes either." she admitted. "Guess I've got some more reading to do. I'll probably stop in somewhere and grab a book about them so I understand a bit more. Maybe that'll help me with the shifting too. Figuring out more about the inner me I guess."
"You should try the library," Tayne suggested after another bite. "By sister works there. She could hook you up, find exactly what you need, and it wouldn't cost anything beyond a library card...." That was Tayne's plan. He didn't buy books unless he was pretty sure they wouldn't be at the library. It helped cut costs-- though not many, seeing as he didn't read a whole lot.
"Library is definitely a good idea." she agreed. "I've been meaning to take myself down there anyway. Caius could use some more books to keep him from just playing all summer." she smiled.
"Well, then." Tayne grinned and toasted her with his paper coffee cup. "Two birds, one stone. Great, right? I'll probably be down there in the next day or two, too, for the tiger book. Just don't have time today...." Between this, and Krist, and Krist's room, and his brother... yeah, no time.
Rowena smiled and nodded a little. "Yeah. My sister's birthday is Monday and with work and everything, it'll probably be a few days before I could get to it."
"Sounds like you and me, both, then. Happy birthday to your sister. I hope you guys have a great party planned." Tayne grinned. "With cake." That was the best part about birthdays: the cake. "Bet Caius will like that."
Rowena smiled. "Well I think we're going to do a girl's night tonight." she smiled. "And I'm going to take her to breakfast in the morning. I've weasled my boyfriend into keeping Caius for me so they'll have their boys night, he and his son and Caius and me and Raina can have a bit of sisterly bonding that I feel like we've been missing out on."
"That's awesome. I guess it's just a sibling night-- I'm watching a movie with my brother tonight." He'd have to bring something to watch. Something palatable to a pastor's sensibilities and interests. That'd be tricky.... Maybe he'd just see if Torshael had anything he wanted to see, and they'd rent it.
Rowena nodded and smiled a little. "Guess it is." she agreed. "Maybe it's in the air or something." she chuckled. "We'll probably be doing all the girly chatting, talking about boys and stuffing our faces."
"Mmm, sounds like fun," Tayne said wryly before taking another sip of coffee. His donuts were almost done. Sadness. Also sadness? That kind of did sound like fun. Even if Tayne wasn't particularly girly... well. He'd be down with talking about boys and stuffing his face and chatting. There would just be less giggling and pillow fights and whatever else it was girls did. "I should probably scram... I gotta finish Krist's room. Finally getting him off the couch and onto a real bed."
Taking another bite of her croissant, Rowena nodded. "Alright." she smiled. "I should probably get going anyway. Don't be afraid to give me a call sometime though." she told him. "I do love our little chats."
"I like 'em, too," Tayne said with a smile, popping the last of his second donut into his mouth and getting up. He hesitated, one hand on the books and another on his coffee, then offered her a hand up. Swallowing, he asked, "Would it be weird if I offered you a hug?" She was his "maker", in a way, and... well, she was nice. And he felt like it.
Rowena smiled at him and shook her head as she stood up. "No." she said. "It wouldn't be weird. But be warned, I might rub my cheek on you." she grinned. She couldn't help it after all, he'd just have to deal with it or not get the hug.
That made him pause, but not change his mind. He just cocked his head at her and said, "Well, that's weird. Any idea why?" A were thing, he was guessing, but... what for?
"I'm territorial." she explained. "I like to... mark things I feel are mine in some way." she admitted.
"Well, that's... different." And probably a were thing, then, yep. Tayne laughed a bit, and put his arms around her in the promised hug, curious if she would do it.
Rowena hugged him back and she tried to fight the urge to rub her cheek against his, but she did think of him as hers. She'd made him a were after all. He partly was hers in a tiny sort of way. So her cheek did rub against his lightly. "Thank you for all your help." she said softly. "I really appreciate it."
Chuckling, Tayne let her go. "You're welcome. We all gotta help each other, right? So-- does that mean I'm yours now?" He guessed it was in the way of her having bitten him-- made him, as he'd just thought a few minutes ago.
"At least a little mine." Rowena smiled. "I doubt you mind that though." she teased, giving him a little pat on the arm. "I'll see you soon."
"See ya, Rowena-- take care of yourself," Tayne said, and this time he hefted his books, picked up his coffee for the last sip, and tossed it in the trash on his way out the door.
