BBQ Time!
Who: Amelia, SOHS Teachers and their Guests
Where: Amelia's house
When: 6:30 Pm

Amelia had the windows open. It was hot! Music was playing on the patio as Amelia hummed along, getting everything together. Meat was stacked on the counter, ready to be bbq'd and Amelia stirred together a fruit salad. She couldn't wait to get everyone together, especially with the wonderful new she had recently heard. Originally the idea was to take minds off the trouble with the missing teens, but now that they were safe, it was time for a celebration. She smiled happily as she mixed everything together and waited for her guests to arrive.

Sloane had gotten home around 4:30pm, a little tired but still cheerful. When she heard the news of the missing teens being found she promptly collapsed on her couch and laughed. Relief spreading through her body as the tension and worry drained from her.

After calling her parents and brothers to discuss the good news, Sloane changed into a pink dress for Amelia's barbecue. She quickly rummaged through her cupboards and fridge, trying to look for something to bring. She settled on a salad, it was healthy, easy and besides, she wasn't the greatest cook.

On the way, the English teacher stopped at a liquor store and picked up a bottle of red wine. Only really intending on having one glass, the rest she knew would go to her colleagues. She parked her car a little ways from Amelia's house and walked up, knocking excitedly. Fully intending on giving the other woman a big hug, extremely excited about the returned teenagers.

Amelia knew the moment someone had entered her property and she couldn't help but get more excited. She set her fruit salad aside, checked her hair clips in the mirror to make sure everything was still in place as she headed for the door. Her freshly painted toes from the night before poked out of her sandals that made a slappy noise on the hard wood as she hurried out of the kitchen and down the hall to the front door.

When she opened the door and saw Sloane she gave a big welcoming. "Sloane! You look great! That dress is beautiful!" She did love the color, but the dress made her worry if she should have worn one too. She instantly chided herself, knowing that being in jeans and a top was what was most comfortable. It was bad enough that she had painted her toes and made an attempt at matching. Before she could let her emotions show on her face she pushed them away and opened the door widely. "Oh come in, come in! I'm sure the others will be here soon."

Sloane returned the hug as best she could with one arm. "Thank you! You look great too!" Ever since college, Sloane could always be found in a dress. Something her mother tried and failed to ingrain in her while she was a teenager, but apparently it did stick. She was always more comfortable in a dress or skirt than pants, which she found too confining.

"Oh, here you go," She said, handing Amelia the salad and dressing. "I would have brought something else, but unfortunately my cooking can be a little toxic." Sloane gave an apologetic look and then laughed. It was common knowledge among the people close to Sloane that she wasn't the greatest cook.

Amelia laughed and ushered Sloane into the house and to the kitchen. She took the salad and dressing and set it on the table next to her fruit salad and some meat and cracker appetizers. "A salad is perfect, besides the point wasn't for you to really cook anyway. That's what the barbecue is for!" She pointed to her grill on the patio in excitement. She loved grilling food. It was fun, easy and tasty - some of Amelia's favorite things.

"If your food is so toxic," She asked conversationally as she grabbed a carrot and nibbled. "how do you get by? Please don't tell me you're eating take out every night." She gave Sloane a mock disapproving look.

Since she was a little girl, Sloane had always been terrified of fire. Candles, fire places and even the gas stove her grandparents had when she was little. So when Amelia pointed out the grill, her stomach did a flip and she could feel a layer of sweat form on her hands. She smiled a little anxious and quickly turned her gaze back to Amelia.

Pushing the nauseousness aside Sloane smiled widely again. "I have friends who love cooking and I'm not ashamed to say, I go over to my parents place more than I should," She said as a silent laugh shook her body. "Only sometimes do I eat take-out. Promise."

The look Sloane gave the grill was not what Amelia would call a normal reaction. For a split second she was certain she saw fear on Sloane's face. Amelia wasn't sure if it was a fear of fire, of cooking or whatever, but she didn't like seeing that look on the face of someone she cared about. She made a mental note to figure it out later but didn't want to ruin the fun mood.

Amelia grinned. "I'm not ashamed to say I'd be happy to mooch of my parents if they were around to cook for me too!" She laughed. "Oh my mother was a brilliant cook. She made the best mashed potatoes. Oh and pie too!" She closed her eyes in remembrance of the tasty foods. "I can only hope a part of her skill was passed on to me. I want you all to enjoy your food tonight!"

Will was running late, had apparently lost one of his shoes to...himself. Oops. In his animal form, chewing was all sorts of fun, and at the time he hadn't thought about the fact that eating his better-than-sneakers shoes would be a bad thing. Sure, he had a ton of sneakers, it went with the territory, as well as a pair of hockey skates. There was even a pair of dressy shoes, all shiny and clean, but rarely used. But the pair of shoes that was half eaten, those had been his only ones that felt somewhere in between. He apparently had to work on not chewing on shoes in dog form.

So now he was running late, having to go and grab something between beaten up sneakers and dressy shoes.

When he showed up on Amelia's doorstep, he was slightly mussed just because, and more than a little embarrassed about why he was late to the party. One hand shoved in his pants pocket, the other holding a large container of potato salad he'd gotten at the grocery store, he waited for someone to answer his knock on the door.

Amelia sensed Will's arrival and excused herself from her guests with a smile and gesture to the door when she heard the knock. She hurried down the hall, trying to let the nervousness leave her system and opened the door with a big smile. "Oh hi Will!" She opened the door wide, gesturing him in. "I'm so glad you were able to make it! Come on in. The grill is heating up. You got here just in time."

She took several steps back to get out of the doorway. "Sloane and Ben are already here in the kitchen if you want to head that direction." She waved her hand vaguely down the hall where dim voices could be heard.

"Hi Amelia," Will sent a half flustered smile at the woman who was technically his boss. "Oh-oh, they are? Great, that's great?" He knew his cousin was pursuing Amelia, and most of Will's opinion was just 'Don't do anything that'll get us fired.' The younger of the two Stones really liked his job, enjoyed passing along both the knowledge and the passion for hockey, so his shifting slightly under the high school principal's gaze had something to do with that.

Just as much, he was glad Sloane was already there, and not simply because they were friends. That they'd been friends since high school. But his mind had been wandering places again when it came to Sloane that he'd avoided since that minor crush in high school, when she'd been his English tutor.

"I, um, brought potato salad," he held out the container for a second before reconsidering, "I can just put it in the kitchen." The far larger man stepped forward, into the house, easily dwarfing the redheaded woman.

"Yep, they sure are." She noticed his shifting and wondered what that was all about. She hoped he wasn't being weird because he was at the boss' house. The whole thing was intended to be fun, not weird. She shut the door behind Will and stepped ahead, noting his height. She wondered briefly what the hell the Stone family was eating. All the men were so tall!

"Potato salad sounds great. It'll go wonderfully with the meat." She tried to give him a relaxed and friendly smile. "Come on, let's go find the others." She lead the way down the hall and to the kitchen. "Hey everyone." She called ahead. "Will's here!"

In general, face wise, Will and Ben did not carry any particular resemblance. They did, however, have similar colorings, with brown hair and brown eyes, as well as towering over the general population at 6'3" and 6'4". Their height had certainly helped while playing hockey together on teams in high school and college, and then for kicks in the present. Unlike his cousin, Will was quieter, and more prone to the occasional bashful moment around women.

Not that there weren't some hilarious stories that couldn't be told in mixed company about the two of them in college.

Will smiled back, his nervousness mostly fading away, as his attention span didn't always hold on long enough to stay in any sort of negative emotion long. "Okay," and then he was following her to where she had said Ben and Sloane already waited.

She hadn't intended on being late. When she got home from work, she put some brownies in the oven and got down to research again. It was a lot to try and figure out what had happened to Adelle, to see if there was something she herself could do. It was turning out to be next to impossible. And that was hard for her. She was not one to handle impossible well.

When she had finished the brownies, she packaged them in a simple brown box and slipped into her sandals and headed to her car and then to Amelia's house. It had been three years and she found that she really did like the woman. She was sweet and it was nice to have a boss who cared, both about her students and the other teachers.

Upon her arrival and seeing she was not the first, she headed up to the front door and knocked, absentmindedly fixing her dress as she waited for it to be answered.

Amelia had just put meet on the grill when she felt the presence of another on the property. Ben, Will and Sloane were in the kitchen when she entered from the patio. She heard the knock in the distance and gave a smile and gestured to the door, leaving them to entertain one another while she attended her hosting duties.

When she opened the door and saw Miranda, Amelia smiled, happy to see her. "Miranda! I'm so glad you were able to make it." She opened the door wide and ushered the art teacher inside. This gave Amelia a chance to get a look at the woman she considered a valuable part of her teaching staff, and perhaps a bit of a friend. She looked amazing. "Miranda, you look great, as usual. I love that dress." She gave the dress a long glance, wondering if she should have worn something a little nicer after all but pushed it away to lead her guest to the kitchen.

Miranda looked down and smoothed it again. "Thank you, Amelia. I've had it a while. You look lovely." It was something she'd had since the sixties. But she wasn't about to say that. She stepped inside and presented the box she brought with her. "I baked some brownies for everyone. I hope that's alright." She offered her a hug.

They made their way to the kitchen and she said hello to everyone as she entered, smiling. "Suppose everyone's heard the good news?" she said with a bright grin. It was good to know that the students were safe. Never in her years had she been witness to something as horrible as people kidnapping children.

"Brownies are perfect." Amelia assured her as they hugged. "In fact, Ben brought a wine and he had mentioned pie would be better. I wonder if the wine and brownies would pair up nicely?" She wrinkled her nose at the thought. "I suppose it would have to be a sweet wine though, hmm?"

Amelia's smile widened at Miranda's words to the group. "It's wonderful isn't it? Here I was thinking we'd need to cheer each other up over this whole thing and now they're back. I say we celebrate instead."

Autumn climbed out of her SUV, shouldered her bag and grabbed her plate of goodies: mini cheesecake bites. She took a deep breath, hoping she was dressed okay for the occasion. She would be dressed just right in Georgia but it was a whole different world up here.

She walked into the backyard and saw several people chatting and looking as if they were having a good time. She hated being the "new girl" but she swallowed her insecurity and headed over to the food table.

Amelia was about to lead Ben into the house to check on the veggies when she saw Autumn come around to the yard. She gave a wide smile and wave.

"Autumn! Hello, hello." She gestured to the stairs up the patio. "I'm so glad you decided to come. Come on up and meet everyone." She gestured to Ben. "This is Autumn, she's going to be new this year, teaching Biology."

As soon as Amelia greeted this 'Autumn' person, Ben turned around to look at who had the name. And boy, did he look. His eyes widened for a second as he saw the beautiful brunette coming up to them, and for a moment Ben lost all reaction. He snapped out of it just in time for her to get to where he was standing with Amelia, and held out his hand, with a charming smile.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Benjamin. You can call me Ben." Stupid of him to introduce himself by the whole name, especially because he never did and she had already greeted him as Ben, but he was still a little awestruck. And maybe if Amelia noticed, if she even cared a little bit, it would produce some reaction on her. "I am the Guidance Counselor." He added, still smiling.

"Hi Amelia!" She trotted up the stairs to follow Amelia. "Thank you for having me over. I really appreciate it!" She handed the plate to Amelia. "I made some cheesecake bites."

Autumn turned to Benjamin and had to pause for a second. Because seriously. He was gorgeous. She slid her hand into his, her hand feeling tiny in his. "Hello Ben. It's very nice to meet you too!"

Sloane had just picked up the knife to start cutting the vegetables Amelia had indicated. Green peppers, red peppers, onions and mushrooms. Shaking back her hair, Sloane started with the green peppers, cleaning out the seeds and pushing them aside to throw in the garbage later. Determined to do them as perfectly as possible to prove she could cook, well, cutting wasn't coking but it was definitely a precursor too cooking.

Amelia saw Sloane still cutting the veggies and decided a little breather was in order so she opened the fridge and pulled out some pink lemonade she had made up earlier in the day. She pulled out several glasses and a bucket of ice. "Anyone want some lemonade?" She asked to everyone in the kitchen.

Before waiting for a response she poured herself a glass and smiled at Will. "So how has your summer been going so far, Will?"

While Sloane had been cutting veggies, and Ben had gone outside, Will had put his hands in his pockets and tried to figure out how to tell, or rather, ask, her what he wanted to.

He looked up from looking down at his new shoes, leaning against a counter, when Amelia came back in. "Yes, please." Automatically, he swallowed, his throat dry all of a sudden. Chocolate brown eyes flicked over to Sloane before Will answered Amelia, "Good. Better now that the kids are back." With that conversation with Gabe that was enough to break anyone's heart.

"Oh, that sounds great." Sloane said, perking up and looking at Amelia with a bright smile. She hadn't even noticed when Amelia came back inside, too focused on the vegetables and not ignoring Will, but trying to be cool about his presence. He looked good and it made her body tingle and her stomach do flip flops. "It's great to be back to school." Sloane chimed in, her eyes flicking to Will and lingering a second longer before looking at Amelia again.

Amelia smiled as she watched the two of them and poured two more glasses of lemonade and handed it to each of them. "I agree with both of you. Now that the kids are back and school is open, summer is looking up. I just know this will be a good summer and hopefully far less eventful than it has been so far." She laughed.

"Sloane, if you're about done with those veggies I'll take them out to the patio and get them cooking." Not to mention, she wanted to get OUT of the kitchen. These two were dancing around one another and damned if she was going to get in the way.
