getting back to where you belong
Who: Nick and Jenny
When: Mid-Morning
Where: Nick's Apartment
“Here we go, Camelot Place.”
Jenny leaned forward to look out the window at the apartment complex where her brother lived. One of the hidden benefits of writing Nick through snail mail was that she had his address without having to go through their mother. It had been a hard won battle in the first place to get Helen to promise not to call and ruin the surprise. Nick knew that she was back in the States, but the last they had spoken, Jenny was living with their parents with no plans to move out anytime soon. It wasn’t far-fetched to say that this trip had been completely driven by impulse. Yoshi had made one mention of going to her brother -- it only made sense considering how happy she had been when they still lived together at home -- and it quickly became all she could think about. ‘Calm down, chica. I know you’re thinking of blaming me if it doesn’t work out.’ “I am not.” The words slipped out of her mouth, causing the cab driver to turn around and give her a raised eyebrow of confusion. His eyes dropped from her to the iguana in the pet carrier on her lap. Did he know about familiars, or that she was holding one? She smiled, regardless, and offered her thanks for the ride. From there, she paid the cabbie and began unpacking the car of all her baggage, which amassed to all of a duffle bag and a roller suitcase. The entire interaction took all of five minutes and then Jenny was left alone on the sidewalk.
She stood there a moment to look at the complex before taking out an envelope with the Nick’s apartment number on it. It wasn’t until she was within a few steps from the front door that the thought occurred to her that Nick might not actually be home. This was not an uncommon occurrence. Jenny had always been the type of person that dove head first into a situation, only to later regret some of her decisions. She tended not to dwell on the regret, or at least she tried her hardest not to; she was still human after all. ‘Is there anywhere we can go if he’s not here? ’ “No clue. We’ll have to cross that bridge when we come to it.” Jenny hesitated another moment more at Nick’s door. Was she having second thoughts about moving to Scarlet Oak? No, it was more the realization that her days of keeping her trauma a secret were numbered. ‘With that face, you won’t even have days, chica.’ He was right. If Nick was home, an anxious expression was not the one she wanted to greet him with.
Jenny set her bags to the side of the door so they weren’t obviously visible. She placed the pet carrier directly in front of the door, even opening the cage so that Yoshi could peek out. “Play along, little man.” With a new expression that was nothing short of playful, Jenny knocked feverishly on the door, then ducked away out of sight. Come on Nick, be at home. Be at home. A few seconds later, someone answer the door. Yoshi looked up and opened his mouth -- an iguana version of a smile. ‘Hey man, you lookin’ to adopt an abandoned iguana?’
