it's only blood
Who: Maddie and Lark
When: Late afternoon
Where: Heme
Lark had given blood at Heme once before, and though she'd initially been frightened, it hadn't been so bad. She hadn't been alone that day. She was alone now.
When Lark had been given a room at the shelter, one of her room-mates was a girl named Destiny, who insisted everyone call her Desi. Desi was older than Lark by a few years, had two kids, and had lost custody to the father after 'falling in with the wrong crowd.' Desi talked a lot, but some of the things she'd had to say had been pretty educational. She told Lark that she made money on the side by selling her blood at Heme, and with Lark being 'vanilla,' she could make a good chunk of money doing the same. The idea had disgusted and horrified Lark, but in the end, she had fallen to the temptation. She had allowed Desi to procure a fake ID for her, dress her up, put make-up on her face, glamour her hair brown, and drag her off to Heme.
It hadn't been so bad. It was just like giving blood anywhere else. But the month had passed, and today Lark was eligible to give blood again. Desi couldn't go this time, though. Lark had forced herself to go alone. She was convinced every step of the way that something would go wrong. The girls at the shelter all insisted that Lark looked so much younger with blonde hair, thus the glamour. She didn't have anyone to glamour her today. She'd put her hair in a pony-tail, and decided she was just going to have to fake confidence. She was actually kind of good at that. When she gave her ID to the bouncer she looked them dead in the eye, and when the bouncer hesitated a moment Lark simply raised an eyebrow, as if to ask why her time was being wasted. She was let in, and escorted to a room in the back. Half an hour later Lark was sitting on a table, a needle in her arm, watching her blood slowly fill a bag.
She was doing an okay job of looking aloof and unconcerned, but she wouldn't truly feel relaxed and safe until she had the money in her hand. There had to be a better way to go about this.
