The demons of my soul
Who: Marius, Madeleine, Zaviar and familiars (NPC)
Where: Zaviar's home
When: Evening

Dinner had been delicious. The day had been interesting as well. Marius tended to count any day where he didn't end up having to dodge even the idea of the police as a boring one, but today Puddles had made it interesting. And Puddles had insisted that he was coming along. Since Marius had discovered that he did indeed have a relation in Scarlet Oak he decided he'd get to know him better. See what his genes did when they were unleashed on the mortal population. Other than turn out devilishly handsome fellas who had smooth voices and a way of standing that just made him think of, well, himself. Marius couldn't do anything but approve of Zaviar after their first meeting and he hoped the second wouldn't change it. What was the appropriate thing to do to a disappointing relative? He was pretty sure that the answer dealt with culling them before they could spread the disappointing genes on. Even a defective demonic must be better than any of the vanillas or angelics, but that didn't mean that they needed to go and make more of them.

'Your mind scares me.'

"Your mind would scare me if I could hear it. You were afraid of a goat." No, that wasn't going to stop being funny anytime in the near future. Or ever. 'Fear the terrible goat!' Attached to some girl who hardly seemed worth the effort. Puddles decided to ignore him after that and spread her wings to fly up to the door just about a minute ahead of him. "Good job," the demon congratulated his familiar as he walked up to the door and pressed the bell. "You beat me by a whole minute and couldn't even press the doorbell. I'm impressed."

Zaviar was content to sit on the couch with Madeleine, flipping through a book on black magic that he had found in that magic shop, Aeaea. It was so old that he could no longer tell what color it may have been when it was new, the spine cracked and a few of the pages were unreadable, but overall it had provided him with some knowledge that he had not had before. And he approved of every bit of that that he could gain, no matter the source that it came from. An old book was better than some old man who reeked of the strongest herbs and made him feel as though he was going to gag on the air every time that he took a breath or tried to speak. Even a normal person would have had trouble around someone like that, to say nothing of what it was like for a were-snake. Knight was stretched out by the door, making actual dog noises as he worried at one of his new toys. Zaviar found it far too amusing. It was something called a Kong and you put a treat inside of it and then waited for the dog to get it out. Knight had yet to get the treat and Zaviar refused to help him no matter how much he whined.

And suddenly Knight abandoned the treat and bounded to the door. Not half a minute later someone had pressed the doorbell. 'It's that man from the other day,' Knight informed Zaviar as the man unfolded himself from the couch and stood. He took his time, setting the book just so on the table and glancing at Madeleine before he made his way towards the door. 'The one who reeks of demon and claims that you're his.'

"You can practically see the resemblance," Zaviar replied as he reached for the lock. Glancing back at Madeleine he recalled that he had not quite found the time to mention Marius to her thanks to Darcie's presence the last time that she had been over. Then he had gone out for dinner with her mother and overall it had simply not come up. There was never a convenient time to say that one had come across their demon ancestor. Grandfather. Whatever Marius was in relation to him, he was a demon and Zaviar was not all that keen on the idea of him actually meeting Madeleine. "A demon who stumbled across my home a few days ago and says that I'm somehow related to him. He may or may not be lying, but either way it seems like a better idea to not turn him away. His name is Marius." 'And there's a duck with him!' Zaviar blinked at his familiar before opening his door to discover that there was indeed a duck there as well. Ah. "Marius."

Hiding from her mother? Guilty as charged, and Madeleine hadn't even thought to deny it. If she had stayed where Lila might have been able to collar her she would have either gone on about the pregnancy, the many horrors she had endured during her own, the lack of house staff, the various things Madeleine appeared to be doing wrong, the various things that Madeleine actually believed to be well and truly redundant, any number of other things that the younger and somewhat more irritable fire elemental simply did not give a toss about... Or she would simply cut to the chase and start informing her of her opinion on Zaviar as though it truly held any weight at this point in time. She did not want to hear what Lila thought of him. If it was negative there was a chance the house would burn down. If it was positive, there was still a chance the house would burn down because her mother just could not help herself when it came to eyeing up men and Madeleine had always been a jealous woman. Her head tilted slightly so she could watch Knight with a bewildered expression, flames rolling to and fro over the backs of the fingers of one hand as though they were a coin. No matter what Knight said, while he may have been more intelligent than the rest of his kin in a manner that was almost more human, he would still fall victim to the same pitfalls the rest of the doggy nation did.

When everyone began to move - everyone being Knight and Zaviar, since she actually had no idea where Althea had gone - Madeleine would almost have considered pouting were it not for the look Zaviar gave her. The flames moved from the back of her hand to her fingertips as she raised her eyebrow at a response that was clearly meant for Knight rather than her. One-sided conversations could sound so strange. 'I smell company.' Her own familiar had decided to join them after all. Oh, well there's a surprise. I think Knight had already established that. Nevertheless, half a sentence into Zaviar's explanation and Madeleine closed her fist, extinguishing the fire. 'I knew he smelled differentwrongunusual.' "Do shut up, Althea." Uncoiling her legs from underneath her, Madeleine slid her feet back into her shoes and then crossed them, toe very nearly tapping out an anxious rhythm in mid air. She didn't think heels made for the speediest get away if a demon wanted you, say, dead, but at least she would be more or less ready to leave if she needed to make a quick departure. 'You can't be scared of it; it has a duck.' Clearly, her familiar had missed the part where she was a fae-blooded elemental and not demonic. 'Even you eat ducks. From China.' The Chinese take-away. 'Same thing.' Althea's sense of amusement probably should have concerned her, but it didn't. Instead, she supported her temple with two fingers and stared, remarkably unimpressed, in the general direction of the front door. If it killed her, she hoped Lila destroyed the bastard.

'I smell other familiars.'

"Multiple? Zaviar must have company."

'They're larger than I am.'

"Like most everything else in the - ah Zaviar, good to see you opened the door." Marius wouldn't have blamed him if he had decided not to. Actually yes he would've because he didn't approve of that, but it still would've made sense. Not everyone could handle seeing a demon even if they happened to be demonic themselves. If their current company was not demonic then it'd likely just be more uncomfortable for them. All for the better really because Marius had just caught sight of who Zaviar's company was and he approved. That rather unimpressed look didn't affect him much. He'd gotten it so many times and it didn't take too much effort for it to change usually. If he cared to change it at all. "Whose the pretty redhead?"

'The pretty redhead has a snake.' Marius didn't see what was so concerning about that. 'It's a really big snake!'

'What is it with people having familiars that look edible?' It was an honest question. That and Knight had that same urge as he always did when he saw a duck; he wanted to bark and chase it away. The chasing it away part came because he had never been able to catch one before. If he got to make an exception this time then he would have been fine with that. Provided that he had not already been fully aware that chasing the duck would get him put outside for the night again. And he could not count on having the same good look that he had the last time unless Madeleine had other relatives from England who intended on stopping by and letting strange talking dogs into their house.

"The 'pretty redhead'," Zaviar replied, voice nearly a drawl as he looked over at Madeleine. "Has a name. It's Madeleine Gray and it's a better idea that you use her name than refer to her in that way." If Marius went around talking to most women like that then that was his business, but Madeleine was not most women and Zaviar would not have it. Especially not in his own home. As for opening the door, well, that had been done almost solely because he really did not want to see what happened when you irritated a demon by ignoring them. Marius may have looked the same as any other man on the street, but looks could be deceiving and Zaviar was pretty sure that he had nothing on the demon. It bothered him, oh did it ever, but there was nothing he could do about it at the current time. "Was there something that you wanted?"

'I want a duck squeaky toy. Althea, do you see this thing? A demon has a duck.' He needed to tell Antonin about this, sure that the necromancer would get as big of a kick out of it as he did.

'We are higher up the food chain,' Althea informed the dog from where she had chosen to hide herself. And no, she was not quite ready to come to heel just yet because Madeleine was feeling agitated. Madeleine always felt agitated. But as with many other traits, the fire elemental's sense of superiority had rubbed off and she had to share that piece of information with Knight. 'I think Zaviar should shift. The three of us could chase it around the room. The one who catches it wins.' And then either the demon would be rather dead or it would just go away and stop bothering her ward. Which was exactly what is was doing, because she felt the elemental positively bristle at being referred to that way.

The pretty redhead. The pretty redhead. Ignoring the fact that referring to her by her physical attributes was entirely pointless since she was the only other person in the room, was that supposed to be in any way flattering? Only vaguely aware that her eyebrow had arched rather sharply and that she had turned it on Zaviar to await his response, Madeleine was only a touch appeased by his answer. It had nothing to do with it being at inadequate - which it wasn't - but that she sorely wanted to set fire to his demonic relative. Just for that. And yes, before her familiar butted in, pregnancy was a perfect excuse. "Charmed," she uttered, with all the sincerity she would have bestowed upon him had he been any one of the Calverts, ready to be used as kindling. Her smile was strained at best and her eyes were trying their hardest to glare regardless. Self-satisfied wanker. Glancing away to try and see if she could spot her familiar - 'You won't find me from there.' - her eyes fell on the demon's familiar. How exactly did one make Peking Duck, anyway? And could he not just sort out why he turned up so he could then leave?

'That duck is even making Madeleine hungry.' The noise that followed was as close to a reptilian laugh as Althea was ever going to get, and likely just a little disturbing for many. 'She used to have a children's story book about a puddle-duck called Jemima. Ask it if it's called-- Hang on.' Without moving, because she did not feel like it when she was only in pursuit of an answer, Althea directed her thoughts to the rest of the room. 'Hey, duck. Is your name Jemima?' Madeleine choked on thin air.

To be fair, Marius was completely aware of how little women liked being referred to as some variation of that pretty trait-inserted. He was. He just didn't care and found the varying reactions that they or those with them gave to be very amusing. Just like now. Zaviar went to the woman's defense and that tipped him off to the idea that this wasn't just a friend. This was the special sort of friend. He has good taste. Marius was glad to see that a descendant of his wasn't chasing after the sort of women that were better left in the dark corner of the bar. And yes, he was elitist when it came to that sort of thing, he was an incubus. He had the right to be. Others weren't so lucky. Zaviar, of course, needed to be since he had come from an incubus down the line. Marius gave a mocking sweep of a bow towards Madeleine. "Absolutely charmed, Miss. Gray." No he wasn't, she was pretty but not that pretty, but she would be. That was the definite upside to being an incubus, women couldn't just stay indifferent when he was around if he decided he didn't want them to be. He couldn't control where exactly it was directed, no, but at least they had to react somehow.

'Is it a good idea to upset the woman who has the familiar that wants to make me a snack?' Puddles didn't have to have anyone tell her to know that a big snake would think a duck was a good meal. To say nothing of the dog that wanted to chase her around. It's always a good idea. Puddles made an irritated honk and then she became confused. 'My name's Puddles.' Marius actually missed out on the joke as well. He'd never been one for storybooks of the mortal children unless they involved monsters that he thought may be based on him and his kind. The Bible was a pretty funny one. "Don't confuse my familiar, it makes her more insufferable than she normally is. As for why I'm here, I was just popping by to say hello and make sure that you hadn't gotten yourself into trouble. Never had some sort of relation living in the same area and it's all very fascinating." Marius looked back at Madeleine. "And the company is prettier than it was last time I was here." He couldn't wait to see what she was like all stirred up, if she had actualy reactions instead of just sitting there. What was she, an earth elemental?

'I don't think that he'd go for it. But we should try. I'd be happy to try.' Knight's tail even started to wag at the idea of chasing the white thing around the yard. He bet that he would be more likely to catch it than Althea. He had yet to see the snake go at her full speed so he had no idea what that might be or if it matched up with his at all.

It was never a good thing when Madeleine hardly spoke at all. It was usually a sign that there was something wrong and Zaviar was certain that he did not even have to ask to know what the problem was - it was Marius, his presence and the way that he had first addressed her. His mouth tightened just a little as Marius looked at Madeleine again. That demon really needed to keep his eyes to himself instead of looking at others like that. Or saying things like that. Zaviar knew that the only company that had been here the last time that Marius was was himself and Knight, but he had seen what Madeleine was like when she thought when he was just staring at a woman, but Madeleine did not. "I have gotten myself into no trouble." That he was aware of. That actually counted as trouble in his view. He did not even view having killed that water elemental as trouble since he had just had it coming for striking Madeleine. For marrying her, really. Marius did not need to know any of that. He may have been related to him, but Zaviar had shown how little he cared about his family when he had seen to killing off his human father and half-siblings. The more he thought of it the more certain he was that the demonic blood must have come from his father since his aunt and cousins had not been, which meant that he had killed Marius' son. What a shame. "Do you know how to use a telephone though? Most people call to give a sort of warning before they show up. It helps to ensure that someone is there and that they are not otherwise engaged."

'Because they do that,' Knight offered, tongue lolling out as he settled back on his haunches. 'Puddles is such a weird name. You picked that for yourself? Why that?' Puddles. It just sounded terrible. Knight was far better, so was Althea. Even Martie was better.

'Humanoids are so serious. I think we should. I want to see if I can sneak up on it.' In her place on top of the bookcase, out of the line of sight of the others in the room, Althea shifted slowly out of her coil and began to slide down the side. 'And don't you tattletellsnitch on where my hiding place was.' It had taken her ages to get up there.

At that bow, Madeleine could not stop herself from rolling her eyes, nor could she hold her tongue. Apparently it was a replacement for her gag reflex. "So charmed, in fact, that it ought to have been self-evident and you need not have said a thing." Maybe it was dangerous to essentially tell a demon to shut up, but since she was apparently just the side show she hardly saw why it really mattered. True, the fact he looked no more than a man didn't mean a single thing, but she did have to admit that his familiar rather detracted from previous concerns. The duck was probably more worried than she was, or had been. With that said, that was probably because her familiar was... 'Doing nothing you wouldn't do.' Standing, Madeleine smoothed out her clothing before looking over Marius briefly. Oddly, there was a faint family resemblance and she assumed that was what Zaviar had been talking about before. That was, however, apparently his only redeeming feature thus far. Especially since there was a rather more base repulsion that made her eyebrow draws together even as she flashed him what attempted and failed to be a smile when he called her pretty yet again. "I know what I look like, thank you." She turned on her heel in a half-hearted attempt to find her familiar and hoped the wretched creature realised it was harder to turn one's back on a demon than she had supposed. Althea, you ask Knight right now if anyone was here last time that blasted demon was. Caught mid-stalk, the snake would have huffed if she could. She had more pressing things on her mind. Like the duck. 'Knight. Madeleine wants to know if anyone was here last time that blasted demon was. Or if she is just being stupid.' The last bit was her own doing, true, but that was because she thought her elemental really was being stupid. Especially since, when she wasn't thinking about men, she almost seemed to think she stood a chance of finding her. One round around the living room in search of the damned constrictor and the elemental deposited herself next to Zaviar, hand reaching for his arm while her mind... wandered, for want of a better word. Wandered all over Zaviar - 'Warnings before you have those thoughts. Warnings.' - and she quite unashamedly looked him over once before turning an irritated stare on Marius.

'A puddle-duck called Puddles,' Althea mused. 'I'm going to call you Feathers.' A beat. 'I think you'll find me first, you know.'

Puddles had no idea where the snake was. She had heard her say something, yes, but she hadn't seen her yet and it was beginning to make her just a little nervous. The goat had been startling since she charged out of nowhere, but a snake? A snake was legitimately dangerous when one was a duck. 'Seriously. No more snakes.' That would be hard since Zaviar himself was a snake.

"Someone is just a little snippy, isn't she?" Marius only appreciated the view more when Madeleine stood and he was actually able to see more of her. My grandson has good taste. 'Her familiar is a snake and I think it's getting closer.' Puddles was firmly stationed at the door and ready to flap away if it became necessary. But the smell of snake in general was so strong around here that she couldn't tell whether it was inside or outside. So she was shuffling between both, always staying close to Marius' ankle. "Telephones are just too modern for me, Zaviar, don't ask an old man to change his ways." Of course he knew how to use a phone, his cell was snug in his pocket right then and likely filling up with text messages dealing with questions about which bar he'd be at that evening. "I was also bored and didn't know that you had the company. Now that I know I'm even more glad I stopped in." His eyes caught on when Madeleine reached for Zaviar's arm. There it was. Disappointing that she had turned it onto him instead, but it was better than the irritation that - was suddenly right focused back on him again. He just kept his grin on his face and leaned against the doorjamb, arms crossed over his chest. "So you do have a girlfriend. Or just an exceptionally touchy friend."

'My name isn't Feathers. My name is Puddles. What and where are you?'

'But at least I know where you were. How did you get up there without anyone seeing?' Knight could never get away with having hiding places. He was too big for most of them and even if he did find a place then Zaviar was able to locate him by scent. Or he would pull out his favorite treat and the game was just over. Knight could not help but give into certain animal instincts and treats were just not playing fair. He had informed Zaviar of that and been told that the man was completely aware of that and more, he did not care.

Zaviar did not visibly react to what Madeleine said to Marius, but he wished that she had not said it. He did not know near enough about Marius yet to be sure what could be said to him and what should be left unsaid until he was gone. He did not know enough about demons in general to be certain that they could not go ahead and just destroy whatever they wanted to with magic that he had no sort of knowledge of. They were old creatures, practically made of magic, and if they wanted to destroy something then Zaviar would not be convinced they were not capable of it until he was told such. "People can get that way when you objectify them. As an old man-" Marius' words, not his "-you should know that." Old man, please. Zaviar knew that Marius owned a store in Scarlet Oak and there was not a chance that he was not at least somewhat up to date on how the world worked. 'Only person who was here other than the demon was Zaviar.' Knight thought it was funny that Althea was calling her own elemental stupid and wondered if Madeleine had heard that part too. "Madeleine is Madeleine and she is mine so you can stop looking at her like that." Zaviar glanced over at Madeleine to make sure that she had not taken that badly when she reached for his arm, and was a little surprised when she looked him over. Where had that look come from? "Did you have intentions of staying for long?" Directed at Marius of course, Madeleine was welcome to stay however long she wanted.

'I like Feathers too. And she's a really big snake and she's coming.' If dogs could grin then Knight would have been.

'Time and difficulty.' Althea answered after a moment. 'And no one was paying attention.' The last part was rather the deciding factor. If they had all had their eye out, they would have seen her scale the side of the bookcase rather painstakingly. Even once she was up there, since she was not his familiar and she was no bother (and possibly because Madeleine hadn't asked), Zaviar hadn't told on her.

Snippy? Really? Last Madeleine checked, that was not her when she had crossed into the realms of snippy. That was her on a normal day. True, her normal days were getting more and more like snippy days recently, but that was not her fault. Well, not entirely. It did, after all, take two to tango. She had not made herself pregnant all on her own, but the fact remained that she was, thus she reserved the right to be snippy if she bloody well felt like it. Instead she waved one hand in the direction of the duck. "Your familiar is having a nervous breakdown." And she couldn't sound less concerned if she tried. In fact, did the mental health of the familiar effect the mental health of the witch or elemental? 'Might explain your mother.' No, Lila was like that already. Madeleine didn't mind being objectified, either, but only when it was done properly. Because there was being objectified and then there was just being subjected to someone who came across as a slimy git. Again, her attention was drawn to whatever to was that was repelling her. It was not unlike what she had felt from - 'Linnea.' - and probably vice versa, only Linnea was human. Could demons have elements or was this one just vile? 'Why can't he be both?' That was an excellent point. 'And Zaviar was the only one here when the demon came last time. You're being stupid again.' Despite that tail-end insult, Madeleine smirked slightly. Good. Zaviar had been the only other person, the demon was a lying bastard who was trying to push buttons and she still needed to work on issues regarding jealousy - but she had yet to set anyone on fire. Even if Marius did deserve it just for standing there. Zaviar's answer to his remark left her rather more smug, with dangers of it actually edging into a smile as she turned her head to meet his eye. She was not about to complain. And - no, he was far more attractive than his relative, regardless of shared genetics. There was something about such a controlled calm that, despite being the exact opposite, Madeleine found appealing. And that was to say nothing of the rest of his mind or, indeed, body... 'Do we need to have this discussion again?' No. No, they didn't. Releasing Zaviar's arm, she moved to stand behind him, eyes peering over his shoulder in a fairly disinterested and distracted manner. One of her hands had returned to seek purchase on his arm again while the other plucked softly at the back of his shirt, her mind preoccupied with thoughts of skin contact.

'I'm a boa constrictor, if it makes a difference.' In fairness, Althea had paused in her stalking due to the bizarre turn Madeleine's mind had taken. Which... Well, around Zaviar wasn't completely bizarre, but it didn't seem to happen quite like that. There were boundaries where familiars were instructed to stop listening, even though Knight continued to make jokes anyway. That sort of thing. Having given up because she didn't understand and the elemental really wasn't listening any more - that also concerned her - she had turned her attention back to Feathers. Or Puddles. As for where she was... By now, it was really rather obvious if anyone was paying attention, which they weren't. And she was sort of out of the duck's line of sight, so... Waiting patiently for the bird to come back from panicking by the door again, Althea stopped steadily climbing the air over the route Puddles had been following and let herself slide into the other familiar's path. 'Hello, Feather-Puddles.'

Marius held his hands up when Zaviar said to stop looking at Madeleine 'like that'. "I wasn't looking at her any special way." And he hadn't been. That was how Marius tended to look at everyone who happened to be female and at least somewhat attractive. Madeleine surpassed 'somewhat' even if the longer that he stood there, the more that he began to feel like there was something distinctly not attractive about her. Oh not physically, physically she was superb and a wonderful example of a redhead, but there was something that just seemed like it wanted to rub against him the wrong way. "Puddles is over-anxious. And you're a fire elemental, aren't you?" Wasn't that just perfect for a were snake to take up with a fire elemental? All that heat had to be wonderful for him and oh, fire elementals were naturally easy to work up. Toss him into the mix and Marius really wasn't surprised to see the way that Madeleine had slid behind Zaviar with her hands seeming unable to stay off. "Well whatever she is, is she usually this unable to keep her hands to herself when there are others in the room or is she trying to stake a claim?" He glanced at Madeleine and gave a shrug. "I promise I'm not here to try and take him away from you. He's not my type." Of course Marius knew exactly why Madeleine was acting like that and all he wanted to do was intensify it. Zaviar was far too calm for his own good; what made him uncomfortable enough to finally ask him to leave because it was obvious the redhead wasn't going to stop touching?

'I am not over-anxious, there is a -' And Puddles' thoughts just stopped, froze in place when she turned around and there was a snake right there. A very large snake. Where she had been walking. For a few long seconds there was not a thought, not a feather stirring, and then Puddles was scrabbling on the floor to hide behind her demon's leg. 'I TOLD YOU THERE WAS A SNAKE SHE IS GOING TO EAT ME, MARIUS, IF SHE EATS ME YOU'LL DIE TOO AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!' Marius clapped his hands over his ears although it did no good and directed a glare at the constrictor he hadn't even noticed. "Really? Scare the duck who probably has the duck form of anxiety, yeah that's just great." He actually sounded irritated for a moment as he scooped the duck up. Really, he should've gotten a lion or wolf that wouldn't have been scared of these things.

Zaviar wanted to know why it would matter if Madeleine was a fire elemental or not. After all, Marius was a demon and did demons not come from hell? Just because Zaviar was demonic did not mean that he did not think that hell was a place full of fire and awful things. He had seen what the legionnaires looked like, things straight out of an imagined hell, and just because this demon happened to look every bit the human did not mean that he had not come out of a place like that. So again, why did the element thing matter? "What's it matter if she's a fire elemental?" Who had been letting fire play along her hands before the doorbell had rung. If Marius had seen that then he would have had no reason to ask. Other than that... Zaviar was having a bit of trouble paying attention to the familiars or even Marius because Madeleine had become a little more obvious with the whole touching thing. Zaviar was hard to ruffle, but the man who was supposedly his grandfather was stood right there and there was no way to deny that when she wanted to, Madeleine could have a very distinct impact on him. Turning his head he lowered his voice, meaning it for her only. "What are you doing?" He was not objecting, precisely, he just did not quite understand. Was it a hormones thing? He thought that he had heard somewhere that pregnant women could be a little different with certain things, certain appetites. He did catch the last of Marius' comments and his head snapped back up, eyes narrowing slightly. "You're not as funny as you think you are. I-"

He was interrupted when he heard the duck's feet scratching on the floor while she let out a loud stream of words that made him wish she had just kept them to herself. Shouting familiars were nothing but annoying and impossible to shut out. 'That was the best thing ever, Althea, oh please do it again!' Knight approved, even letting out a bark as his tail started to wag. 'What's the matter Feathers? Got to hide behind your demon there? Don't see us doing that.' They were not some silly little creature that could not even protect themselves, much less the person they had been drawn to. What good did things like that really do? People would be better off if they did not get these silly, weak little familiars that were more of a danger than anything else. A singing bird? Pointless. That duck? Even more pointless, but pretty funny. Knight wished that they could keep Puddles in the house just so that Althea could sneak up on her in a whole variety of ways. "You're the one who brought her here. It's not our fault that your familiar is a duck. Perhaps you should give some thought to keeping her at a pond with other ducks where she won't be in danger of getting eaten." Though it did make his mouth tug up into half a smirk to see Marius, the demon, holding a duck in his arms with a glare on his face.

Madeleine could not honestly say she was following the conversation in full. That would have required a relatively significant portion of her attention and Zaviar had nearly all of that. Nearly, because her ears undoubtedly pricked when she heard the term 'fire elemental' used in connection with her. Somewhere in the back of her head she heard Althea chime in with a remark about having a gold star and the corners or her mouth tugged upwards in a smirk. "He's water," she muttered into Zaviar's shoulder with more than a little venom, more interested in answering his question than the one Marius' had posed. Idly she wondered if he - being Zaviar, not Marius - knew how good he smelled, and she turned her head to rest her cheek against his shoulder. If the demon wished to address her it could speak to the top of her head because she wasn't interested. Somehow, at some point, both arms had wound around Zaviar's waist. Only one of them was on top of his shirt. "I know what I could be doing," she answered, fingertips drawing nonsensical patterns under his shirt. Why he didn't just ignore Marius, she didn't understand. He would go away eventua--

The duck's mental, lunatic ravings left Madeleine curled in on herself against Zaviar's back until she managed to turn what little focus she had towards the source with the intent to roast it alive. Luckily the extent of her anger was short-lived. It wasn't the duck's fault its demon was a bloody idiot. 'What Zaviar said,' Althea put in, mid-relocation. Because it made sense not to stick around after scaring a demon's familiar. 'All I did was say hello.' And despite how much she really did not want to know what her elemental was thinking and had been trying not to listen any more, the snake turned her mind to the mental equivalent of repeatedly poking Madeleine in the head until she got a response. "Althea." It wasn't a warning, it was a vague acknowledgement of her existence. She hadn't really noticed the ongoing ordeal with the duck. Having settled in a corner of the sofa, Althea sat in concerned and somewhat irritable coils. 'Knight, something is wrong with Madeleine.' "I heard that. Nothing is wrong with me." She was just... appreciative. "Now let's shove that out the door or pretend it isn't there until it removes itself and I'll prove it."

Marius was not only have an effect on Madeleine, he was having one of the best effects ever and he couldn't keep back a chuckle when it became so obvious that Madeleine wasn't paying the littlest bit of attention to him or the conversation. No, it was all focused right on the grandson of his. Oh fire elementals. "And it was just curiosity. I have a water affinity and I wondered what it was about her that was putting me just the littlest bit off. Seriously, when one took that out of the equation there wasn't anything wrong with her. Except maybe that attitude. That attitude could really do with a bit of fixing. Overall though? Definitely better than anything that was on the television. Someone should come up with one of those reality shows where an incubus, or succubus, went around seeing how long it took to get members of the other sex and lusty and lunging towards whatever caught their eye first. It would wreak hell on relationships.

Not only did he have a duck in his arms, he had a trembling duck in his arms. Because it wasn't bad enough that a water fowl followed him around, no, now it had to get scared by every other familiar because they just happened to be predators. "Have you ever tried getting your familiar to stay at home? It doesn't work that well and I've given that more thought than you will ever know." 'Can you stop talking about that while we're stood here with a snake right there that has a twisted sense of humor? That wasn't saying hello! That was trying to give me a heart attack!' Puddles most definitely didn't like the constrictor, the dog wasn't that great either. More people needed to have familiars shaped like her. "She's right, nothing's wrong with her. She's just having a reaction. Women just lose their minds when I'm around. Call it a gift." Call it exactly what he was born to do, Marius loved it. Even when the woman wasn't paying attention to him. In this case he jut chose to be amused by the fiery redhead clinging to Zaviar like she didn't know how to let go. That helped out her unlikable attitude. 'I like the idea of leaving so that they can have their fun. You've had yours, why don't you go to a bar now? They like you better there.' Demonic people could be so hard to get along with and the ones that were closest to them could be just as bad. "Think I'll call first next time. Something tells me she'll be like this every time I'm around and that could just get boring." No it really wouldn't. "And it is a he and has a name, red."

Water and fire, that was just perfect. What sort of demon had an affinity with water? There was no chance that Madeleine would ever get along with him. Not that there had really been much of a chance of that with the way that Marius had been behaving since the moment that he stepped through the door. It was like he had been given some sort of a guide to firmly pressing just a few of Madeleine's buttons and he had set about hitting them repeatedly. Something that would have bothered Zaviar more if Madeleine's actions were not increasingly distracting. His inner snake appreciated the warmth of her arm against his skin and the rest of him just liked the way it felt. He just wished here was not someone else standing right there. Staring. The staring was a little off-putting and that was saying something coming from a man who was half-snake. "What you could be doing if we were a little more alone." Madeleine really seemed to need to be reminded of that before she started sending his thoughts off. Zaviar was not impulsive, he was rather collected, but Madeleine was a bit of a weakness and she had the ability to distract him without trying. When she did try? 'You're going to be as bad as her in a few minutes. Hands are such a problem.'

"I've successfully locked my familiar out for several days when he did something he wasn't supposed to." If push came to shove then Zaviar would lock Knight up in a cage to keep him where he wanted and the dog was aware of it. Zaviar did not do sentimental attachment to animals and for all that he had an intelligent mind and could prove useful, Knight was still a dog. A dog who could prove just as annoying as he was useful. 'I love you too.' As for what Marius said next, Zaviar really did not like that and his eyes narrowed on his demonic ancestor. "A spell? Or do you really think that you're that good-looking? Because if you were then don't you think that you'd be getting more attention right now?" Zaviar did not want to dislike a demon. Demons could be useful, a demon who was related to him could possibly prove to be more than useful. But right at that moment he was having a lot of trouble with not just agreeing with Madeleine. "She has a name as well as you seem to have forgotten several times already. Though I agree that you should call first. It would work better. You also may want to think of leaving before your familiar has a heart attack or you see something you'd rather not." And if Marius was using some sort of a spell on Madeleine it was better that he leave before Zaviar was overcome with a desire to remove his throat for him.

Now the demon really needed to just stop talking. Or let it continue to talk, but do so elsewhere. An elsewhere that was nowhere near... there. Had she not already said he was water? Yes, so it did not need repeating and no, she did not care if Marius had not been able to here that particular response. As much as Madeleine usually enjoyed being in this kind of mood, Zaviar's answer had not been one that she necessarily wanted to hear. It wasn't a no - she did not respond well to outright refusals - it was a... a what? A later? Tilting her head so she could study the side of his face, her brow creased slightly before a frustrated stare was turned on Marius. "Fine." But she was not letting go and there was a touch of annoyance there. He was in her way. Thoughts of setting the demon's clothes alight, consequently roasting him and his duck alive were cut short when her other arm slipped under Zaviar's shirt, thumb tucking into the waistband on his pants. To say she was thinking about what she was doing any more would have been a lie, because she wasn't and her impulses had been left at the helm.

'I stay at home frequently,' Althea added after Zaviar commented. Really, she was eight feet long and apparently still growing, she could not always go with Madeleine. Especially not since the elemental had threatened to buy a bicycle and start travelling on that instead. A lot of those times really were just because her ward had said so, though. But then Knight rarely seemed to listen to what Zaviar said, so maybe she was just an oddly obedient familiar. 'He isn't that good-looking, Madeleine decided he was a slimy git,' she shared before realising what the point of those questions was. 'I suppose she has lost it because she isn't really doing any... thinking.' "Althea, if you're going to talk about me, kindly exclude me from the line completely," Madeleine muttered. She had turned her attention away from Marius again, leaning into Zaviar for what she deemed were obvious reasons and because it was comfortable. All talk of spells and such had gone unnoticed or ignored. 'Personal pronouns require thought. She does have a craving for Peking Duck, though.'

Yet another look that Marius had seen before, though it was really rather rare to see it directed at him. He wasn't used to being the one in the way. Other people would be in the way and he'd see them getting stared at with that look that just demanded that they go away. That look was telling him that he needed to leave and had the hem of his pants started to smoke or catch fire completely he wouldn't have been surprised. Irritated and left with a desire to freeze Madeleine to the floor, yes, but not surprised. Only it didn't happen. "You're a well-behaved familiar then and I haven't met many like you." The goat who ran around the park like a wild thing, Knight, his own Puddles and a few more that seemed to do as they wished without having a care in the world for what who they were attached to wanted. The rest of the familiar's thoughts were unappreciated and he let the snake know that. "I am that good looking and I am in no way slimy." Yes he was, and he knew it. The fact was that he didn't care and that made all of the difference in the world. Why would he care? He was the way he was and it'd worked for this long so why change?

"No spells," Marius informed Zaviar. "It really is just me." Let him work that out if he wanted to, Marius didn't plan on sharing all of his secrets just because he happened to be related to this man. If he was clever then he'd look demons up and realize that things like the incubus were real and that was what he'd come from. Right then Marius thought he should be thanking him because he could see where Madeleine's hands were wandering and what man wouldn't be glad for that? "You're welcome for it though, Zaviar, I think you'll have a very good evening. As for me and Puddles... well I think it's best we leave before your girlfriend figures out if she can make Peking Duck out of her. Next time I'll call first and maybe you can show me whether you're worth any time as a witch."

That fine was not the sort of fine that conveyed that everything was fine at all. A line of thought that confused Zaviar, but he was not really meant to understand it. No one outside of his own mind was. And even inside of it he was having trouble keeping up because Madeleine was getting worse. She had said 'fine' and her actions were not suiting that word even a little bit. Zaviar drew in a sharp breath when he felt Madeleine's other arm go beneath his shirt, lower this time. "That isn't really what I meant, Madeleine." He was not removing her hand, true, but what sort of idiot would do that? Marius was practically at the door and it would not take much effort to get him out if he could not find the way himself, but it was the principle of the matter. 'What principle?' Zaviar was not actually sure if he knew. He was starting to lose the same grip on his thoughts that he had had only moments before. He was laying the blame on that solely on Madeleine and what she was doing. "You're a bit slimy." Zaviar thought it was true. His demonic ancestor just oozed something unpleasant, and for Zaviar to even think that was saying quite a bit.

'Slimy git is fun to say. And she's not THAT well-behaved.' Knight's ears had gone back a bit at the idea that he was not well-behaved, even though he was completely not unless one was comparing him to an untrained puppy. Or a cat. No one could expect a cat to listen to anything. "Just you." If that were true, and Zaviar was not at all sure that he believed Marius, then it meant that he was going to need to look some things up on demons. Did they have natural effects or not? If the answer was 'not' then he was going to need to sit down with Marius and explain that whatever he was doing needed to not be done around Madeleine. Or around him for that matter. Having Madeleine do this was something that he could handle, because it was Madeleine, but some other woman? Oh no. That would end in no way that was not awful for him. And whoever else was involved because while she seemed able to restrain herself right now, he highly doubted she would if she walked in and saw some other woman doing what she was. 'That's not a thought to be shared is it?' Oh no. "I am worth anyone's time." Zaviar was not born a witch, but he was nonetheless good and his pride would not allow for anything else to be insinuated. "But yes, I think I will... and you should go."

'Come back and play any time, duck.'

"No, I know what you meant," Madeleine replied, mind part way engaged simply because it was Zaviar who was talking. Had she? Had she known what he meant? Not that it really mattered - she was already smirking. "Had I not, you would be missing at least one main item of clothing." Clearly she actually had understood his meaning... or just found the presence of mind to continue from where she had left off. She had, however, now given herself ideas, but she did not think using her element to get rid of his clothing would go down well. Not after what her mother had done. She ignored the rolling laugh from Althea that seemed to echo around the corners of her mind, and apparently everyone else's. 'Thank you.' No, she wasn't really, but the snake liked that he had said that. In fact, she was actually rather badly behaved with her regularly considering eating smaller familiars, winding up other familiars, blissfully remaining incapable of not broadcasting her mind to everyone nearby... and so on. But she did not have to share that if she did not want to. Anyway, both Madeleine and Zaviar thought that this Marius-demon was slimy, which meant they were probably right like they were with other things they both believed. For a moment Althea considered venturing over to see what slimy smelled like closer up, but decided against it. Puddles might actually have a heart attack, and as much as she wasn't sure she cared if the demon suffered a familiar-induced death, she didn't think the duck really deserved to die. "One assumes slime is water-based," Madeleine murmured. Really, why was he still here?

'No, but we can pretend.' That was Althea's verdict on what Marius had said and she was sticking to it because it suited her. Meanwhile, Madeleine was taking into consideration how far she might be able to push Zaviar's not-quite-spoken just wait. The removal of his clothes was exactly what she wanted right there and then, true, but it was also expected and possibly less attention grabbing. But her own clothes? That was rather different, even if she didn't think she necessarily had the right outfit to pull that off properly. Pouting slightly while she gave greater thought to things that all eventually pertained to exactly what her familiar did not wish to hear about, she slipped her feet out of her shoes. Why was the demon still there? She didn't think she had once had to sit through someone else refusing to leave when they were not wanted. By her, anyway. "Welcome for what?" Leaning up to get a better look minus her heels, Madeleine perked up. "Is he leaving?" And if so, did that mean that her entertaining the idea of deliberately setting off the smoke alarm in the kitchen with, well, herself was now redundant? Head tilting around Zaviar's shoulder to look him in the face properly, she very nearly remarked that he was worth her time, but held her tongue because he wasn't done talking just yet and while no, it was not that she was remembering her manners, she still had a firm understanding on how much faster proceedings could go if she did not interrupt. Again.

'No goodbye hug, Feathers?

"You're welcome, Althea." The snake hadn't introduced herself, and neither had anyone else, but Madeleine had used the name awhile ago and since no one else was called that and it wasn't a swear-word Marius had decided it was the snake's name. At least he'd gotten one of the people in the room to like him. Even if it happened to be the actual snake instead of the were. "Slime forms in water, but I think it technically counts as earth... water elementals can't make it at least." If water elementals couldn't do it then Marius was going to say it didn't belong to them. And if they wanted to think that he was slimy then so be it, their minds obviously weren't changing. How exactly Madeleine's mind was focusing on anything that wasn't Zaviar and various parts of him for any length of time was quite beyond him. Especially with the remarks she'd been making. He really had been hoping that she'd just tear his clothes off so that he'd always have that to use against her in the future. If she was the sort to stick around his descendent instead of flitting off.

"We'll find out if you're worth my time," was all that Marius would say regarding Zaviar's magic. He didn't trust that humans could have near as good a grasp as demons and besides that, Zaviar obviously wasn't a born with. Were's couldn't be. He was a learned and that meant that, demonic blood or not, there were just some things he wasn't going to be as good at because he didn't have that natural knack. 'Leaving,' Puddles reminded him, nipping hard at his shirt and catching a bit of skin underneath. "Watch your beak." 'Get out the door and or I'll find somewhere better to put it.' How was it that the familiars being killed would possibly kill the one attached but not the other way around? Marius couldn't see how that made any sense. "Welcome for you being in that state, red, and yes he's leaving so you can go ahead and burn his clothes to cinders or whatever it was that fiery, lusty little mind of yours was kicking up. Try getting those nails into his back, I'm interested in learning how fast weres here." Marius touched a finger to his forehead and tossed it off in a mock salute. "Remember kids, condoms prevent accidents." Who the hell was he kidding? Marius hadn't used one of those in his life.

Puddles honked. 'You stay away. Both of you!' Her feathers ruffled and if she could've gotten any further into Marius' arms she would have. Shaking his head, the demon stepped out the door. "Oh, make sure to close that," he called over his shoulder. "Unless you want to give the neighborhood a show."

Well it was good to know that Madeleine could at least still hear and process what he was saying even if she did not seem to be processing it all the way. Had Zaviar suddenly found himself lacking a piece of clothing that had been singed away he would have been... it would be inaccurate to say that he would have been displeased, exactly, because his ego would do nothing but swell to know that he had been that wanted. "Good to know that you can restrain yourself when we have company." Very good. Because really, her touching only got more distracting the longer that she had her fingers under his shirt. It was a warm day, but she was warmer still and he got an extra bit of enjoyment out of that. "I don't actually care what slime belongs to and I'm a biology teacher." Madeleine's remark had been off-hand, but Marius' had not been and the last thing he wanted was for there to be any sort of argument based on slime when the demon was supposed to be leaving.

Zaviar felt the change when Madeleine removed her heels and became suddenly shorter. 'Should be glad she didn't take off her skirt. Don't even think of giving me that look, you were thinking it and I know that you were.' There was a definite advantage to having Madeleine behind him and that was that while she could distract him like she was, her appearance could not. A small smirk worked its way onto his face when Puddles took a nip at Marius and he just decided to not respond to anything about being worth Marius' time. He was. The rest of it, though, that wiped the smirk off and his eyes narrowed slightly. "We're not children and it's none of your business what happens once the door is closed no matter what you think you've done to have a hand in it." He only just kept himself from adding a tight 'now get the hell out' before Marius was through the door and making one last remark about shutting it. "Too hard for you?" Knight. The dog, who was busy barking at Marius for reasons Zaviar did not even care about, turned to nudge at the door with his nose until it closed. 'I think this is the part where we get sent outside or told to keep our thoughts to ourselves again. It's hot out there.' Ignoring his familiar was extremely easy and Zaviar turned his head to give Madeleine a small smile. "Happy now?"

"Mm?" Zaviar was talking - addressing her, even - but Madeleine wasn't following. The word control echoed around her head a few times like it was trying to further enforce the wait she had essentially been told before and she gave an annoyed huff in response. That he was now talking to someone else really didn't matter; the sound of his voice was still there. The only reason Madeleine had waited for anything at all was because Zaviar specifically had told her to. Later she would have to admit to herself that not a single one of any of the people she had even just hooked up with could boast the claim that they had ever made her wait, because she just didn't. The agitated manner in which she was shifting behind him was almost proof of that. A month ago, as a sixth level elemental, something would have been burning by now. Probably Marius. 'The curse of control.' Annoying voices in the back of her that needed to comment on absolutely everything needed to go away. So did the demon that meant she had to wait. And Zaviar's clothing. Which she could have removed by now, because at no point did he say anything about her waiting while he was fully dressed. The word wait wasn't even used, it was heavily suggested and did he have any idea how agonising it was to have him right there and not be able to do anything about it just because he happened to have a relative over? There was a reason other rooms were invented.

Even though Madeleine had theoretically asked Marius a question, her mind had automatically redirected itself when he began to talk to her. The comments about slime went unmarked and everything else went almost completely unregistered, but for the words nails and back. "Done that," was her very distant response, mind suddenly utterly preoccupied with memories. If it was Zaviar who was the were she'd made bleed, she could not remember, but - 'I am not sure he wants to bleed.' - but she could find out. If it was another were pre-Zaviar, then whatever. But it remained that that was an interesting memory and she would not mind repeating it. With the right were, obviously. 'You're really not listening, are you? - I did not need to hear about that again today.' Why had he needed to wear a shirt anyway? It wasn't as though indoors was especially cold or he was at all modest. And for Christ's sake, if Marius didn't leave, she was-- Oh. Althea rather rapidly uncoiled to find somewhere - preferably outside - that wasn't where her elemental was. 'What Knight said. Only she won't tell me to anything.' She would know; she had been listening to the same thing for a while now. Madeleine bit the corner of her lip at that smile, automatically sliding in front of him. "Pick a surface."
