At the original Dyke Night, the one in Season One at Babylon when Ted and Emmett go to "Dyke Night" with Melanie, they say to her that while it's been fun hanging out with her and she's been a great hag, the problem is, fag hags are supposed to be fun, and what with her pining over Lindsay and all, not so much with the fun.

Now, I've never been totally wild about the phrase "fag hag," as it's not ecactly pretty and it's often meant in an unflattering way. Although it's also often said with love.

I've always had gay male friends, and I've more than once said "If I were straight I'd be a fag hag." That's because I always kind of thought of fag hags as women who got crushes on/fell in love with gay men, more than just women who like to hang out with gay men.

So, I think we can all agree Debbie is a fag hag in general terms. And I would suspect most of us agree Daphne is Justin's hag -- although she's also his best friend, and I like the sound of that better.

But is Lindsay Brian's hag? Or just his friend and baby mama? Is Melanie Ted's hag, in S1 or ever? Or just his friend?

Can lesbians be fag hags? Does there have to be romantic/sexual attraction to be a "hag"?

All these things are perplexing me. What do you think?

This is a slightly revised version of something I wrote in the comments section in the very first post I ever made to this asylum -- recycled here because we have some new members, and it was kind of lost and lonely down there. ;)

I find the whole Brian/Justin thing very strange for me, because I'm UTTERLY OBSESSED with them and write fiction about them and am just completely wild with fangirl squeeage about their sex scenes, and yet I have no context in my life for that. I don't want to touch them, I'm not attracted to Brian or Justin or the actors who play them, I don't read "slash" or gay porn or watch other gay couples, nothing. It's like its own unique phenomenon.

Sometimes I think this might make sense: As a lesbian, I'm used to seeing images of straight couples on TV and in movies, and it does nothing for me. I don't identify with it. Until QAF, we never really saw any same sex couples fall in love and fuck in such detail, with such amazing chemistry and with so much passion between them -- and the love, did I mention the love? I may be a dyke but I'm still a girl. I like the love part. The combination of sex and love is something I find very appealing, and this was actually the first time I ever saw that. Over and over and over, with characters whose ongoing story I was invited into for five seasons.

It was just amazingly powerful and really changed my life in many ways.

I mean, more than just creating this asylum. ;)

So, I can no longer date outside the fandom. When I started watching QAF I was dating a woman who actually was a pretty big QAF fan, but not THAT KIND of fan. If you know what I mean and ummm... I know that you do.

When with non-believers, I feel like I'm constantly trying to hide how I feel about Brian and Justin. And at first I thought this was because I'm a lesbian and obviously must hide my obsession with a boy/boy pairing from other lesbians, but then I thought: Yo, don't straight women feel the need to hide their obsession with a boy/boy pairing from the men in their lives?

And does this mean bisexual women feel they must hide it from everyone?

Tell me, fangirls and honorary fangirls: Can you date outside the fandom? If so, do you feel you must hide your obsession?

Since pendulumchanges started a whole new asylum called qaf_music, I'm going to do something new for Dyke Night from now on. And it will still be on Friday nights, but I just couldn't get it done this weekend because I had too much work.

I have a thing that bugs me big time about fic in which Gus is ripped away from his parents, Melanie and Lindsay, so that Brian and Justin can raise him.

I understand that some people find Lindsay or Melanie, as characters, unsympathetic, and I don't object to that. We all have our personal likes and dislikes of individuals. But when I see this "gay friendly" fandom express contempt for them AS LESBIANS, when I see authors wrench their child away or find them feeble and inadequate as parents, and readers squee over that, it makes me want to cry or, you know, blow something up. It shows a profound disrespect for queer families, which were the cornerstone of the entire Queer as Folk message.

And a truly lesbianic warning: Bring tissues.

Okay, so, I just finished an article that was due today and it's ummm... 2:17 AM. My editor gets up at 5 AM so let's just say I got it in with very little time to spare.

What this means is that I was working my butt off all day and night, and though I did find the time to squee over my new icons from badbadpixie, I didn't get Dyke Night done. And since pendulumchanges has started the cool new qaf_music asylum, I decided to do something totally different and non-musical for Dyke Night from now on, and post my obsessive QAF playlist stuff over there instead.

So for this week only, it looks like Dyke Night is Saturday. See you then!

Sorry this is late... I was at my nephew's birthday party. They had a jumpy house and a slide. I mean.... talk about the antithesis of Dyke Night. ;)

One of the places where I work is a big company that's half dykes and half gay men. And all the dykes love Brian Kinney and wake up every morning and ask themselves, "What would Brian Kinney do?" (I won't tell you what the men think, other than that the phrases "bad role model for the gay community" and "Peter Pan" come up a lot. Pffft.)
