Brooke knocked tentatively on Damon’s door. She hadn’t told him she was coming but she guessed, since they were actually dating now – something she still wasn’t sure was an overly good idea but had decided to go with for the time being – it was probably an acceptable thing to do. A paper bag with cartons of Chinese takeout in it was clasped in her free arm. She wasn’t sure if Damon had already eaten – ‘Do not think about it, Brooke’ – but she thought it was a nice gesture anyway. She wasn’t exactly hungry, but she knew she should probably eat, despite the butterflies in her stomach. She hoped Damon would be pleased to see her, but she was still unsure how he would receive her. He said he loved her, but this was coming from someone who had treated her so badly. She couldn’t deny that he really seemed to be making an effort to change, though. Still, the saying ‘A leopard never changes its spots’ kept running through her head and putting a cold, doubtful tinge to any happiness or fluffiness she was feeling about the situation. One of these days he could get angry and then what? So he’d walked away at the coffee shop. But he was still on his best behaviour at the moment. She knew from experience that guys always acted how they thought you wanted them to act at the beginning. But once they were comfortable, once their feet were under the table as it were, the niceties tended to fade. For example, Lucas had promised that she was the only one he wanted, that he’d been stupid to mess with her heart before, that he was the guy for her, then only a few months later he was back kissing Peyton again. She’d managed to forgive Peyton since being here, realising that she missed her best friend more than anything, but Lucas had broken her heart. Twice. And she couldn’t forgive or forget that as easily. She couldn’t make the same mistake with Damon. Damon was a hell of a lot more dangerous than Lucas, as she knew from experience, and it wasn’t just her heart in danger of being broken this time. But as long as she was careful, it would be okay, right? As long as she looked for the early warning signs and didn’t let herself become pray to his temper again she’d be fine. She hoped.
