Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Jessica and Evan
Where: Corridor
When: Immediately after class
What: Uncomfortable situtation :]
Rating: TBD

Evan had managed his way through charms without much ado. The professor had been kind enough not to call on him when he was so obviously lost. He had been a bit foggy-headed since the Christmas break, something he refused to attribute to his encounters with both his brother and the following incident with Jessica Vaisey. Even after the rare almost emotional outpouring to Tony while boozed up, Evan had been unable to focus well in class, and he was beginning to think he was going to have to start asking for help in his homework if something didn't change soon.

Sighing, he shoved his bookbag over his shoulder and headed for the exit. He ran a hand through his hair, frowning as he mussed up the blonde locks. This sort of thing didn't happen to him. He was focused and dedicated and got things done. This being distant, always having something on his mind, it wasn't like Evan Pucey, and it was beginning to grate on his nerves.

ANd his nerves weren't much helped when he stepped out into the hall, clearly at the exact same time as every other student on the campus. His eyes widened slightly as he was shoved to the right, the person next to him colliding with his chest as his hands quickly snapped up to brace himself and whatever girl (the softness proved that much) had been so unfortunate to stuck next to him for the impact. His arms landed on either side of her, protecting her from being smashed as his back to a beating from the swarm in the corridor.

Evan could smell her before he even saw her, and head snapped over to look at her, the haze suddenly shifting into focus as he stared down at Jessica Vaisey. "Sorry," he muttered, before wincing as what felt like the corner of a charms book stabbed him in the ribs.

She may not have noticed immediately, but Evan did, and their close proximity was not lost on him. With an arm on either side of her, he was practically pinning her to the wall. It wasn't exactly an unfamiliar position for him, though with Jessica there...

Evan was far too emotionally challenged to notice the hint of hope in her voice. "Yeah. I haven't seen much of you since the holidays." Since the party when she had been in the wrong place at the right time, and he had used her for a brief period of solace. He had a feeling she was avoiding him, really. He supposed that it had been awkward for her, maybe uncomfortable. She probably saw him differently or something of the sort. Great. "Tell you... Er, well. Sort of. I mean, I did want to... apologize for that night over the holiday. I'm sure... you know what I'm talking about."

He blinked at the compliment. Truthfully, it wasn't exactly unusual to hear such things, but it was nice to hear it from her. "What? No." He glanced over, seeing only the heads of other students. "I'm fine." He was looking at her again, and though he was sure it was only his horny teenage boy's imagination, he could swear their was heat radiating between the two of them. He swallowed thickly. "I'm... always fine," he murmured.

Weakly, Jessica nodded. "Yeah." It had been quite a while since they'd last met, her time mostly spent with Hugo these days. She could remember the memory she shared with Evan all too well however, almost as if it had only happened yesterday. Jess could still feel how tightly she held him against her in that dark, secluded room, the soft strands of his hair tangled in his fingers, the soft cloth of his dress shirt. But what was most pronounced was the pain he seemed to be feeling, the sort of desperation he felt after whatever had happened to him. That time she could almost pretend like he actually needed her...

Jessica shook her head to snap herself back to the present. He was saying something about how he was sorry? Sorry for what? Upon realizing what he was referring to, she only got more confused. "Why are you apologizing for that?" she asked. He probably wished she'd not seen him at all, which effectively shattered her earlier hopes. Her lips declined to a frown. "Did you wish you hadn't seen me at all?" she asked, looking down.

She hugged her hands around her form tighter, protecting herself. "That's good." she said in a sigh. "I'm glad you always are then." Another shift in the crowd's movement, an Evan was pushed closer towards her again. "Sorry." Jess squeaked. She closed her eyes; she wished she could say the same about herself about being always alright, but lately it seemed not everything was going right...

Evan blinked at her. Was she offended? Merlin, girls were confusing. He couldn't say or do anything without upsetting one of them somehow. "Wbat? Wish I hadn't- No, I mean..." He sighed, his hand twitching with the urge to run through his hair. "It wasn't fair of me to unload that on you. It wasn't your mess to clean up." And only Evan would consider someone completely distraught over the loss of his brother to the point that he could hardly breathe a 'mess' to be 'cleaned up'.
"It was nice, seeing you."

Evan let out a small grunt as an elbow to his back pushed him forward, his torso pressing into Jessica's. His eyes widened slightly as her fluttered closed, feeling her... softer parts against him. (Yes, Jessica had softer parts, not boobs, in Evan's mind. She was a lady!) Merlin, if he'd been imagining her warmth before, he wasn't now, and she was so close, he could drop his forehead down against hers. He knew he should make an effort to get out of the situation eventually, as it didn't appear the crowd was dispersing any time soon, but he couldn't say he particularly... minded their present situation, not that he'd admit it.

"Not your fault," he breathed, taking the opportunity of her closed eyes to trace the contours of her face, the curve of her jaw down to the slope of her neck, her collarbones which gave way to her... softer parts. At which point Evan's head immediately snapped back up to look up at her. He was not interested in Jessica's softer parts. Absolutely not.

Jessica saw his confusion, which only caused her own to double. Lately, it seemed as if they were both too cautious, both keeping the things they truly wanted to say about the other; it left them both struggling to grasp with the other felt and with time, it was getting more difficult to guess the other's meaning. "I didn't mind. I've never minded your honesty." she told him, then felt a slightest flutter in her insides when he said he liked seeing her. The corners of her lips lifted to a warm smile. "I liked being able to be there, that you trusted me enough to be so open... probably more than I should..."

She felt his weight shift until his weight was against hers. Her fingers uncurled and rested lightly against the chest that seemed to be crushing her own. She didn't mind this at all, but it was making it difficult for her to not let her thoughts wander.... for her to stop her heart from beating so fast. It was so loud she'd be surprised if he didn't hear it. Another shift, and instinctively, she brought her arms around him to push back those crushing him...

There was a strange burning in her skin, and she wondered what had caused it. She opened her eyes and found Evan looking at her. She raised her eyebrows at him, then laughed a little. "I can't move."

Evan wished she wouldn't say things like that, things that confused the hell out of him. She appreciated him having a meltdown in front of her? Not only that, but she still felt something for him, despite what he had thought was a blossoming relationship with Weasel? She was crazy, absolutely insane.

Her laugh didn't exactly help things much. With her arms around him, with him gazing down at her in a very intimate space, she was laughing, a bright, short laugh that almost forced a small smirk to rest on his lips. "And here I thought you just wanted to be close to me," he teased with a soft chuckle.

Jessica has strong feelings for Evan. This was still clear to her despite her efforts to forget them. Hugo had been helping her through this process. He was sweet and kind and seemed to be everything she needed. She liked him very much. She was so far, successful. Until now.

Now, it was had to ignore how much Evan could still affect her. All this time, she's worked on trying to forget him and a second with him, all that woked seemed like all lies. "Right..." she said rather awkwardly, looking down though she still smiled a little. "Any other thing I could say in response to that statement I know will just freak you out. So I'm sticking with that"

An opening at her side. Taking the front of Evan's robes, she started to move to her side where there seemed more space. At least now, he wasn't pressed against her anymore, which she thought was better for her than him, really. "Better?" she asked him. "We need to get out of here before you and I get crushed..."

Evan hesitated at her words. If that wasn't a full blown 'I've still got feelings for you', he wasn't entirely sure what was. It was an awkward feeling, especially with the way she looked so uncomfortable as she averted her gaze.

As she started to move away, she took her warmth with her, and Evan found himself not wanting her to go. "You want to be close to me?" he asked her, the humor gone from his voice as he gazed down at her. He ignored her insistence that they needed to leave, having known that for some time. At the moment, he would take being slammed against the wall, the first sign that something was going terribly wrong for Evan Pucey.

Jessica felt the sudden shift in the air, and she knew she was the reason for them. She should learn how to keep her mouth shut, she thought. She usually kept much of her feelings to herself, but with Evan, someone whom she completely trust, the words just rush out of her on their own accord...

His question made her look down, her curtain of dark hair shielding her flushed cheeks. "Why would you want to know?" she asked, giving him the chance to still take it back if he wanted. "Last time I checked, you don't like hearing the things I have to say when it came to... that..."

Why Jessica would decide to trust him of all people, Evan hadn't the slighest idea. He had a horrid reputation for breaking girls' hearts, and even his friends were beginning to seem sparse as of late. Why would she look at him the way she did? What was it she insisted on seeing in him? Hugo was sensitive and quiet and thoughtful and all that other crap girls were supposed to fall head over heels for. Evan shouldn't have stood a chance, but the way she was acting clearly said otherwise.

"Maybe I'm... curious," he murmured, waiting for those shocking eyes of hers to emerge from behind her curtain of hair.

Jessica wondered why he was so insistent on hearing her answer. Was it possible that despite how much she'd expressed how she felt before, he still doubted her? Though it was true that she'd been trying to forget him, her feelings couldn't just... go away. She has been trying very hard. She thought she was doing well, too...

"It doesn't change anything." Jessica said, her eyes remained focused on the floor, lips upcurling to a sad smile. "So I don't understand why it matters, why you want to hear it at all..."

Evan hated it when she did that, that little sad smile of hers. Most girls just cried and looked up at you with a pathetic look on their faces, but Jessica's lips quirked up as if to spite the silly notion of tears. For some reason unknown to him, that smile was far worse than the sobs of dozens of girls left in his wake.

"I..." Evan's usual problem-solver for girls who were upset was a simple lift of the chin and pressing his lips to theirs. It shut them up long enough to come up with a good out, but he didn't want Jessica to just shut up. Although...

His fingers twitched against the wall with restraint. No, not with her. He knew better. He-

A surge from the crowd shoved Evan back into Jessica's personal space with an 'oof!', his body flush against hers. Gathering his wits, he found himself nose to nose with her, those blue eyes staring straight up at him. His lips parted in surprise, willing something to come out, any excuse, any objection, anything to keep him from getting sucked in to the giant clusterfuck he knew he was about to dive headfirst into.

The whirlpools of those baby blues proved to be stronger than he'd thought, though if he considered their pull that October night, he wouldn't have been so shocked with himself as he finally broke their gaze and pressed his lips against hers.

Jessica found herself looking up at him, seeking his answer from his eyes as he himself struggled to find it. She couldn't read him, but she found that his confusion was quite pronounced. This puzzled her. All this time, he's said that whatever it was that she felt for him needed to stop. He's asked her to stop, told her to go to someone else. She's been trying to give him what he wanted, even though most of the time fell short in her efforts. But he never seemed to want her no matter what she did, never changed in the way he treated her, and made it clear that he only saw her as a friend.

It was perhaps why Jess found herself mute when the crowd shifted once again, leaving them both closer than they expected, and he'd leaned down and claimed her lips in a soft kiss. Her eyes grew wide, lips slightly parting her surprise. What was happening? she thought wildly. She couldn't deny how soft his lips were, how good he smelled to her. But this was... this was...

Her small hands landed on his chest and it took all of her strength to push him from her, even only in the slightest. "What are you doing?" she asked, her voice coming out a pained whisper.

Okay, so that wasn't exactly the reaction he had expected, but as he drew back from her, he was painfully aware that it was exactly what should have happened, or rather, that it shouldn't have happened at all. But she was still soft against his chest, looking up at him with vulnerable eyes that made him want to both claim insanity and kiss her all over again.

"I think I... kissed you," he answered dumbly, brows furrowing as he looked down at her. Why had he done it? He had never had those sorts of impulses. Alright, so that wasn't entirely true; she was a good looking girl, and he was only human, but he'd never considered acting on them. The fact that he had confused him as much as it seemed to her. There was no escaping the present situation, no opportunity to turn and run as was his usual excuse for avoiding these sorts of things. He was pressed... against her... against the wall...

Focus, Evan, focus!

"But... you didn't want me to," he said slowly, unsure of who he was talking to-Jessica or himself. "Because... you're... dating Wea- Hugo." Fucking Weasel.

Jessica couldn't breath. It wasn't because of the fact that the crowd's collective weight was pressing her against the wall, leaving her claustrophobic, but the fact that Evan was looking at her the way he was. He was unsure, and it truly was a sight to see because Evan was a man who always had a purpose in doing things, or even if he doesn't he makes sure people thought so.

"Why?" Jessica asked, feeling the sting in her chest that told of her desire to cry. But she couldn't do it, of course. At least not yet. "Why now?" She and Hugo had never talked about making what they were having official, but she certainly has been hanging around him the most lately. She could understand why people would assume they were dating. As for her not wanting him to, she didn't know the answer herself.

She felt week on her legs, so she held on him for support, wide eyes focused on him. "You tell me one thing, and do something that completely negates it. I just.... don't understand. If you care about me, please let me understand..."

Why? That was a good question. Evan was still trying to figure it out for himself. Obviously, he had wanted to. He still wanted to, but was it because she was a pretty girl or was it... something else? Evan refused to acknowledge the fact that 'else' meant 'more'. Evan did not do 'more'. He did snogs. He did shags. He did hit and runs! Why bother, after all, when your future was to be set for you? Suitors married perfect pureblood women after they graduated from school that had already been chosen for them.

And even if he didn't have his future taken out of his hands, Evan was the proud owner of quite the wandering eye. To have one girl keep him satisfied? The same girl for... Merlin knew how long? Not only that, but to have to make her happy all the time. You couldn't just shrug your shoulders and say 'No strings attached!' and go on your merry way.

Relationship. Committment. Those sorts of words fit into the same category as 'impossiblility' and 'fluke' as far as Evan was concerned, and he knew perfectly well that when Jessica looked up at him, when she clutched on to him, that a relationship was exactly what she was looking for, and the notion made him feel almost ill.

Then again, the notion of walking around for the rest of his days in the pathetic haze that he had been all week was a horrifying one. She was in his head. Only Merlin knew how in the hell she had snuck in there, but there were moments, moments with her voice, gently disapproving of his antics, visions of her face biting back a smirk as he made a fool of himself, and Merlin knew there were plenty of memories of that Halloween night, her skin burning under his touch.

"I... meant what I said," he said slowly. "When it comes to... things like this, I am beyond..." He sighed as his fingers crept to rest on the gentle slopes of her hips. "You know how I am. So I figured, stay away from you and save you from becoming, well, like everyone else. It makes sense, you know. I back off, you go run into the sunset with Weasel-" He cleared his throat. "Er, Hugo- and you never have to deal with my shit. And, fuck, Jessica, I have a lot of shit."

The back of her eyes stung, but the tears so far were kept at bay. Her hands coiled around the front of his robe, holding onto him while she felt his warm hands rest on her waist. It was painful to see him struggle, to see his confusion make him stumble on his words. She didn't know what to make out of the things he said, for it had been too long that she'd make herself belive the things he had said he wanted. She believed him, hung onto his every word. Hearing that it had all been lies wasn't easy for her to digest...

At his mention of Hugo, her lips declined to a small from. Hugo. She dearly loved that boy, and would never do anything to hurt him. She'd been planning on perhaps talking to him soon about their relationship; she was getting tired of harboring feelings for someone who didn't care, so she wanted to engage on a relationship that made her happy. If there was one who could make her change, it was him...

But now, things felt different. With just a few exchanged words, it seemed her world had been turned over. Again. "I know I've asked you this before..." Jess started as one of her fingers slid up to one side of his neck; she held him there, her thumb drawing lines over the fair skin. "... and back then, you refused to answer me. But now, could you please..." Her eyes started to shine with unshed tears, her face a reflection of the pain she felt in her chest. Her voice lowered to a tone that only he could hear as she took deep, slow breaths. "Tell me what you want. Tell me what you want from me. Do you want me to hold on, or do you want me to let you go?"

Evan swallowed thickly as her fingers slid so innocently up his neck, leaving a burning trail in their wake. She was never supposed to have this effect on him. She was supposed to be his friend, the one who he beat blokes up for when they made her look like she did right at that moment, like she was about to cry- and Jessica didn't cry. When had that line been crossed? Wasn't there some way to go back and fix it and make everything go back to the way it was? How had it all gotten so crazy? Merlin, it gave him a headache just thinking about it.

"Don't go," he murmured, his hand reaching up to cover hers on his neck as he repeated those words he had hardly managed to get out to her after his ordeal with Adam that winter night. "Merlin fucking knows I should tell you to run for the hills. I should tell you that you should go find Hugo, have a million annoying Weasley children and live happily ever after, but..." But. But, but, but. That annoying but! "I won't."

The back of her hand burned from where he held her, and her heart sank at the words he'd told her. He'd just told her he didn't want to let her go. She'd always envisioned the time he was going to ask that of her as such a happy moment in her mind, but now, she could feel nothing but the weight in her heart. "Why do you want me to stay?" she couldn't help but ask. She could have been satisfied knowing he wanted her in some way, but part of her wanted to know why. "I want to know." She moved in a little closer, hear heart beating wildly in her chest. "If I did, if I let everything go, what would you do? Will you not let go?"

That was just it. He didn't know why. He was convinced being with her was a terrible idea, and that things were going to end horribly. He would regret the entire ordeal and wish it had never happened to begin with. It was destined for failure and pain.

But there against the wall, hands on each other, he knew he had been sucked in. She had some hold over him, some pull that he had a feeling would keep him hanging on even if he tried to escape. What the hell that meant, he hadn't the slightest idea.

"I can't promise you rainbows and sunshine," he breathed, ducking his head slightly to speak quietly into her ear. "I can't promise you anything... secure, not like he can, and you know that." Anyone who knew him knew that. "But I can... try? I've never really," he chuckled softly. "Had to do that before. And I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but you should... choose knowing what you're getting yourself into either way."

Jessica's heart sank when he started his answer with a 'can't'. All she needed was yes, or a no, and he can't even give her that.

"I'm not saying you have to do anything." Jess said, her voice a hot whisper against his ear. She couldn't help but close her eyes and lean into him, savoring the closeness the other was allowing for the mean time. She didn't know when it could happen again, when the other would want her to be this close to him. "But I wish you could want me enough to want to do it. To want to keep me around, and want to not hurt me." She swallowed. "And you're not even sure yourself if you could do that..."

Something damp trickled down her cheek; she blinked, surprised, and immediately hid her face on his neck. "I dont want you to try, Evan. I want you to be sure of what you're choosing." she said, closing her eyes, fingers letting his shirt go and falling on her sides. "Because I don't think my heart can handle hurting any more..."

"I do want you around," he insisted, frowning. "And I don't want to hurt you!" Wasn't that why he was keeping her at a distance? Why did she act like he was saying he wanted to date her, cheat on her, and break her heart. That was not what he wanted! He wasn't that sick! Merlin, girls were bloody weird.

Evan jolted slightly at the damp feeling against his neck. Jessica was crying. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck. Why did girls have to cry? It was like a secret weapon, one that pierced to every male's very core. "I know what I'm choosing. It's just sort of... hard. I've never done this sort of thing before. Ever. Or even really... considered it. And I mean, then you still have to say yes and everything..."

Jessica was able to calm herself down as she let him speak, breathing in and out slowly as she rested against the slope of his shoudler. Despite the chaos all around them, she only saw him, the single distinct voice amidst the loud chattering of eager students before her.

She revelled at the thought of him wanting to take this risk. It made her want to be brave and do it, too. But could she say yes, now? There were still things she needed to figure out, a certain someone she needed to talk to. Did she want this? Did she want this enough to risk getting her heart broken again?

An opening at her side, as the crowd parted; a chance for her to buy herself more time. "I want this, I want you... But I also think I need to think things through." Timid lips placed a kiss on his neck, arms hugging him tightly for a lasting moment, before she snake passed Evan and drifted to the crowd, easily disappearing from his sight within seconds.
