WHO: Peyton and Jasper
WHAT: Whatever...
WHERE: Outside on the grounds
WHEN: 4th block - free period after Transfiguration
WHY: Peyton's bored and needs something to do
RATING: PG-PG13 tops
STATUS: Complete

Peyton was lying on her back in the soft grass of the grounds, staring up into the sunny sky. She was picking out shapes in the clouds, a lonely past time that she usually did when she was bored out of her mind. After class she ran down to her dorm to change out of her robe and then it seemed that all her friends had disappeared. She gave up looking for them. She had too much pent-up energy to anything but lie down in the sun, letting it drain a little from her since she couldn't find anything better to do. It was just one of those lazy days that she wished wasn't. Why couldn't today be a day where everyone just wanted to run around and have fun?

She wondered where her brother was, and her sister. She wondered where all her friends were. Where was Jamison when she really needed a good game of football? She heard a group of younger kids playing and giggling off to her left so she turned her head to see. They were so small they had to be first years. They were chasing each other, weaving around trees and other players trying to stay away from a few in particular. A bunch of them were frozen in oddly wide-legged stances waiting for others to "unfreeze" them. Pip smiled. She remembered playing tag as a child. Sometimes she wished she could go back and be young again...free to play fun nonsense games with her friends.

Peyton's daydreams were interrupted by a figure obstructing the sun from reaching her. She turned squinting to see who it was which was easier said than done. Whomever it was was standing just barely in front of the sun so they stood mostly in silohuette. She waited for the figure to speak first, cause she really didn't feel like moving to see who it was.

Jasper smiled, she seemed friendly enough. "No, you're not in my way at all. I was just walking around." He looked at the kids playing tag briefly, then back at her. She seemed open enough about him sitting next to her, so he did so hesitantly, making sure that he sat at a distance that wouldn't cross any boundaries. "No, I honestly don't." Jasper responded, looking back at the kids again. Really, he'd never been like that as a child. Most of his time had been with his mother studying divination.

"I don't believe we've met?" Jasper said after a moment of silence. He looked carefully at her face. "You seem slightly familiar but I'm certain we haven't met before. I'm Jasper Finnigan."

She watched him carefully, seeing more of his features as he sat down next to her. He was a curious boy, which intrigued Peyton greatly. She wondered about his childhood if he didn't think about being young and carefree like the children now running free on the grounds.

Peyton reached out her hand. "I don't believe we have. I'm Peyton Pucey, but you can call me Pip if you like. Peyton, Pip...it's no difference to me. It's nice to meet you Jasper." Peyton was in one of those light and airy moods. She would usually get like this when meeting someone new. She was so open with people it would probably frighten her father to know that the first question she'd ask would have nothing to do with bloodlines.

The sun shined down on her once again and Peyton soaked it in. She tried to figure out who this boy was by his appearance. Jasper did look like he could be a bit older than her so she guessed he was a seventh year. And since he wasn't too familiar to her she knew he wasn't a Slytherin, though she wasn't really sure of his house. Not like that mattered to her...she was just naturally curious.

Japser took her hand, shaking it firmly, but not too firmly before letting go. He pulled his knees up toward his chest, clasping his hands loosely together. "Pip, huh?" He glanced at her, finding her light mood inviting. He smiled again. "Where'd that come from?" It was interesting nickname, and one he couldn't see how it came from Peyton.

At the same time that Peyton was examining him to see who he was, he was doing the same to her. She looked slightly familiar, but she definitely wasn't in his own. If she was in Gryffindor he would know her face, he knew every Gyrffindor by face, if not by name. He couldn't tell her age, but assumed from the way she'd talked about the kids that she was at least a fifth year. For some reason he thought Ravenclaw, but he was most likely wrong. "What house are you in?" Jasper asked, deciding he may as well just out and ask.

Peyton loved her nickname. It was different...though it could be confusing to people who didn't know her. "My full name is Peyton Isolde Pucey, so my initials are P.I.P.....Pip!" Peyton smiled and pointed to herself as she said 'Pip'.

She was glad he asked, so she could do the same. "I'm in Slytherin. Sixth year if you were wondering that, too. What about you. I know you're not in Slytherin." She smiled, making sure he knew that that didn't matter to her. She could care less about bloodlines and hated house segregation. He was really nice, and that's all that mattered to her.

Jasper smiled. "Pip. It reminds me of something, a character I may have read in a book somewhere, but I can't put my finger on it exactly. It fits you, I like it." He said with complete honesty. He nodded along while she spoke. It was no wonder he didn't recognize her then. He associated with Slytherins the least out of the other houses. He'd noticed they had a tendency to mock his love for Divination, and he didn't take kindly to that.

"Gryffindor." He supplied, looking up at the sky and adjusting his glasses with hand at the same time. "I'm in seventh. You've a brother and sister in my year, haven't you?"

Peyton smiled and blushed. "Thanks, I like it," she admitted, enjoying the fact that her initials gave her a cool nickname. She was curious about the book he had mentioned but since he didn't remember what it was she wasn't going to ask him about it any further.

Peyton nodded at his last comment. "Yup. Adam and Annaliese. They are good siblings." Peyton had to laugh. That statement sounded funny...even to her, but it was the truth. They didn't hate her for being different, and that was always a good thing. She secretly wondered if Jasper would hate her because of her secret but she wasn't about to find out. Instead, she settled into more common talk.

"I like sunny days, though I wish it would rain. I love rainy days more." Pip had always loved rainy days and she thought that this was something small she could confess to her new friend. She watched him adjust his glasses and she had to smile. She couldn't put her finger completely on why but she suddenly found Jasper to be incredibly cute with every move he'd make. She tried to keep the blush from her cheeks.

Pip was happy that Jasper didn't mind the fact that she was a Slytherin. If he did he wouldn't be worth her time...but since he gave her the benefit of the doubt she liked him even more.

Rain was one thing Jasper loved, himself. He smiled widely at Peyton when she said that. "Do you think it'll rain soon?" He asked, glancing up at the sky. "I always like it when it rains. I like to walk around in it, but I don't find many people who like that too. Most people just think I'm a little weird and stay away." He admitted. He wasn't ashamed of it, it was just the facts. People thought he was odd, and so they didn't tend to stick around and talk to him much. Her being in Ravenclaw didn't mean a thing to him. He always hated how people stereotyped based on House, anyway.

He looked back up at the sky and pointed to a cloud, "You know, when it's cloudly like this you can tell all sorts of things." He said, slipping into his usual talk of divination and letting the hand come back down. "My mother taught me how to read things like the clouds, winds, things like that. Most people say its rubbish." He said, no hint of embarrassment in his words. He glanced at Peyton and then looked back up at the sky, leaning back a bit.

"Looks to me like good fortune, or possibly a new beginning of sorts."

They could both see the dark clouds rolling in on the horizon but sometimes that was a bit deceptive. "Yes, I think it will. There was a red sky this morning." Peyton followed the old sailor's motto 'Red sky in the morning, sailor takes warning. Red sky at night, sailor's delight.'

Peyton had to laugh when Jasper mentioned his reaction to the rain, which was so much like her own. She was so surprised they hadn't met before on a stormy day. "I get the same thing. When most people run in when it starts to rain I'm running out. I love it too much. Just the way each drop hits your skin, it's such an amazing feeling." Pip closed her eyes and hugged her bare arms, thinking about the touch of sweet rain drops.

When he started to talk about reading things in the clouds Peyton flinched slightly. She feared he knew, but then she realized by the tone of his voice that he was just passionate about divination, which made her feel a whole lot better. She hoped he hadn't noticed her flinch, since he might take it the wrong way. She looked up at the clouds as a faint roll of thunder sounded.

"I think you're right. Good fortune and new beginnings are definitely here." She smiled sweetly at him, hoping the rain would pour down on them so she could enjoy it finally with someone else who shared the same love for the odd weather. Peyton laughed slightly as the younger children started to slowly make their way back inside, obviously averse to the stormy weather. "Pfftt. Chickens."

He hadn't noticed the flinch, and even if he had he wouldn't have mentioned it. He was too polite to ask that sort of thing unless he knew the person well. He did however turn to her with a wry smile saying, "Yes, look at them run away." He was going to say more but the sight of Peyton laughing stopped him. She was rather pretty, and it made him a bit nervous. He wasn't used to being around pretty girls, or any girls save for his sister, much at all.

Jasper went quiet, trying to think of something to say, but came up with nothing. In the end, he fell back on the subject he knew the most about. He looked at Peyton and asked, "Do you study Divination?" The very question made him even more nervous, because most thought he was crazy for believing in it all.

"My mother was very into Divination while she was in school, and she taught me everything she knows about it, but I don't really think she has a true gift."

Peyton felt such an ease talking to Jasper that she couldn't believe they had just met. It was starting to get a bit colder as the clouds pushed the sun out of the sky. She could smell the sweet rain in the air.

Peyton smiled her best, friendly smile. "No, I don't, but it's not something that's completely unfamiliar to me. I've read a lot of books about different aspects of divination because I thought it was an interesting subject, but there were other things I wanted to study more." In all actuality she didn't care to study it because it hit too close to home. It's hard to study something that directly correlates with your own life. She just didn't feel the need to be studied, for that's what would happen.

She could tell by the way Jasper mentioned the subject that it was something he was passionate about. But the way he added the last bit let her know that he was a bit apprehensive mentioning as much to someone else. Not a lot of guys were really into the whole seeing the future thing, which made it hard to have boyfriends, but for a guy it was something some people would be thrown off by. Pip wasn't that way. She liked people for who they were. If he liked divination who was she to tell him it was stupid or a girly subject, which she of course didn't believe at all. People could just be stupid sometimes. That bugged her.

"I believe all mother's have a gift, at least when it comes to their kids. They always seem to know when you've done something wrong." Peyton adopted an eerie tone to say the last but and had to laugh slightly at it herself.

Jasper laughed, "Yeah mother's do have a gift for that don't they? Usually it's my brother that's doing something wrong though." It was the truth, Jasper wasn't really the type to cause trouble. He was more of a sit back and watch others create havoc kind of guy. Regardless, it wasn't his brother, or mischief that was on his mind at the moment. He was interested in Peyton. She was nice, much nicer than a lot of the girl's he'd talked to around school.

"What things did you want to study more?" He asked, genuinely curious. Divination was his thing, but he knew that a lot of people weren't as interested as he was. He wasn't surprised to hear that she was interested in other subjects, and really his ultimate goal was to find out more about what she liked to do outside of classes. He would get to that question later though, for now he would slowly work up to it in his own way.

Pip smiled at his question. She was happy to see there were a few people in this school who thought about others and not just themselves. So often she'd find herself being talked at...and she really didn't enjoy being in a one sided conversation. "Ancient Runes and Care of Magical Creatures. I find them both so fascinating, as I'm sure you do with Divination. Magical creatures are so intriguing. Dragons, unicorns, things that muggle children only read about in fairytales and have no idea exist. It just blows my mind that they have no idea what is out there. I guess there's some credit to the ministries for keeping all of this secret. IT's like a great coverup...but without so much of the scandal."

Pip smiled at Jasper once again. He was a rather interesting bloke. Not bad to look at either. He had very kind eyes. She wanted to take off his glasses and just stare into them, trying to find every wonderful facet, but she didn't want to scare him away. Peyton had this sort of fascination with eyes. No two were the same and who knew what was going on behind them. She turned the conversation back to him, interested to learn more about her new friend. "What other class did you choose besides divination?"

"Isn't it amazing though?" Jasper asked, with probably more enthusiasm than was needed. But, it truly was amazing. The entire wizarding world being kept a secret from the muggle world did fascinate Jasper. He was glad to see that Peyton found it worth praising. Not often did people actually stop to think about it. He paused, about to ask another question when he noticed that Peyton was looking at him, as if studying his face. He smiled at her, couldn't help it, she just seemed to draw that form of reaction from him.

"Besides Divination I take Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, and Astrononmy. But mainly just Astronomy and divination are what interest me the most." His head titled back to look at the sky, darkening from the coming rain. He could smell it in the air, and even if he couldn't, when he looked at the wind, the shapes of the clouds, they spoke clearly of a coming storm and how close it was to actually hitting. "Are you ready for the rain?"

"I love the stars," Peyton said, dipping her head back to look up at the sky as well. She hoped the rain would clear by midnight so that she could enjoy the night sky. Suddenly the thought of stars made her curious of another thing. "Are you in the Astronomy club? I just joined." She hadn't been to a meeting of the club yet so she really wasn't sure who was involved in it but knowing someone before she even got there would be a nice surprise.

"Are you ready for the rain?" Peyton smiled at the question, hugged her legs into her chest and opened her palms up to the sky. She counted down the last few seconds before the storm, though she didn't realize she was counting softly aloud. "Five...four...three...two...one." As she said one the first drop of rain hit her palm and the rest followed quickly. Peyton laughed, enjoying the moment and each drop as it made her skin tingle. "Beautiful," Pip said softly.

"The stars are absolutely beautiful. It's amazing the way some can read them. I haven't been able to do that very well yet. I'm starting to think you must be a Centaur. But yes, I am in the Astronomy club." Jasper said, smiling. It was nice to know that shared things in common. It was so much easier to talk to her now that he knew she loved the rain, and the stars - both things that had endeared themselves to him at a very young age. He watched her hug her legs to her chest and count down. He couldn't look away for quite some time. She just looked so beautiful with the rain just starting to hit her.

"How'd you know when to start counting?" Jasper asked, assuming it was pure chance. Once or twice he'd been able to do the same thing. He took off his glasses, placing them in an inside pocket of his robes and leaned back to where he was nearly lying down. Turning his face up, he closed his eyes and let the rain fall on his face as he smiled. It was perfect. The rain was always perfect. It ran everything dirty clean.

Peyton's face fell when she realized she had been counting out-loud. She hadn't meant to, and now she had to do some serious spin control. She put on a happy face and shrugged her should. "Lucky guess, I suppose." She hoped that was enough to hold off the questions, but just in case it wasn't she decided to do something spontaneous.

Peyton quickly jumped to her feet and ran around the closest tree, laughing as if she were a little kid again. The rain brought out her youth exceptionally. Holding onto the bark she swung around the side of the tree to look back over at Jasper. The rain slid down her face and her hair coiled into masses of dripping curls. She skipped back over to him and offered her hands to help him to his feet. She stared into his eyes which were now unshielded by the absence of his glasses. The dinner bell sounded in the background, but Peyton barely noticed. She was more interested in the rain and her new friend.

Jasper honestly didn't think anything of it when Peyton said it was merely a lucky guess. He had assumed as much. There were plenty of times that people just got lucky like that, and of course, this had to be one of them. He smiled as she jumped up, running around the nearest tree. His vision was only slightly blurred due to the lack of his glasses, but he didn't care. He could see well enough. If he wore them, everything would be spotted by rain through the glass.

Her laughter was contagious and he found that he was laughing too. It felt nice. He didn't laugh very often. Her offered hands were grasped immediately and Jasper let her help pull him to his feet. She was close to him when he stood, which meant that he could see her perfectly, even without the glasses. He felt a little nervous, being around girls had never been so easy for him, especially ones as pretty as this one. It made him even more nervous that she stared in his eyes, and that their hands were still touching.

With the sounding of the dinner bell, Jasper cleared his throat, glancing around only for a moment before settling his attention back on Peyton. He grinned, stepping away, breaking the contact from their hands and eyes. Half turning he gestured around them. "Looks like we've got the whole place to ourselves since no one else is interested in taking a walk in the rain. Care to join me?" He asked.

He was so close Peyton could feel the warmth of his body like an aura. She looked at him - his eyes, the slight smile, the eyes again, so captivating and deep. It was like they knew everything. It was a special twinkle that made a tingle run through Peyton's body. She reveled in the magic flowing within her at that moment and had to smile a bit brighter.

He backed up and that's when she realized she had been holding his hands the entire time. Pip watched him as he turned, seeing the water just drip off his face, noticing that they were both soaking wet, and probably looked like idiots to anyone watching from the comfort of the castle. But they just didn't understand. The rain was magical. It had powers of it's own. Healing powers....but especially the power of empathy. It always knows your mood and sometimes, when there's not another soul around, the rain can be a comforting company in any situation.

Her hands were cold and she suddenly missed the grasp of his. She smiled and turned to face the direction he was, "I'd love to." She clasped her hands behind her back and walked lightly, with no purpose at all. She finally felt the need to speak again and chose something close to Jasper to talk about. "Do you do your own readings? Like horoscopes? Just to see what's coming that week?"

Jasper cursed himself inwardly for getting nervous. Why couldn't he be more like his brother? He doubted Cameron got as nervous as Jasper was at the moment. It took everything in his power to breathe normally. It didn't help the way Peyton had been looking at him, or the fact that there just seemed to be something special about her that drew him to her.

He began to walk, slowly, assuming that Peyton would follow. He glanced back at her when she asked the question and responded with, "Yes, usually. I've got cards that I read for myself. Sometimes my mum will, but she says I do it better than her. They're much more reliable than the horoscopes that are sent out to all of one sign. Much more attuned to what will happen to you specifically." He smiled, thinking about it. There was really nothing else in the world that made him smile quite like anything related to divination.

"Have you ever had a reading done?"

"Nope," she answered honestly. If she took a moment to think about something she could usually tell what was coming so she had no need. Plus she was scared what might come up. She couldn't really tell the future on command, but sometimes she tried. Not that she was completely averse to trying one...she was just usually too scared someone would read something she didn't want them to.

"Guess I never really thought about having one done." That was a lie. But she had to say it. She couldn't really explain the 'Why Not?' That was sure to follow so she just gave him a standard excuse to work off of. "How does it work? Like, what do all the cards mean?" Pip had never used cards to try and tell the future. She stood by her visions which were a bit uncontrolled and other less obvious forms, things that most people wouldn't notice but she could just sense. That's why it was so easy to predict the weather; it was something she could just feel.

Jasper nodded along as Peyton spoke, really listening to what she had to say. It wasn't often he got to talk like this with people, but when he did, he made sure his entire attention was on them. "Well if you're ever interested in having one done, I could read for you." He smiled at her. "That is of course, if you aren't afraid of letting me know your future." It was a joke, because of course, he couldn't tell her future even if he read her the cards.

"Well actually," he began, intent on explaining how they worked. "Each card stands for something different, and really it's not the same for each type of cards you can use. There are a lot, but with mine, say for example Ekstasis stands for joy or motivation. It basically, when not reversed it means that you should just... do what you want." He stopped, suddenly a bit self conscious.

"But, you know, when you do a reading, you ask a specific question, only you keep it to yourself. I wouldn't know what you ask, so really, I tell you what the cards stand for you and you interpret them however they fit into what you wanted to know. At least, that's how my mother taught me, and one of her friends who has the Sight. Does that make sense?" Jasper both loved and hated talking about Divination. Loved it because he knew it, and it made him happy, but hated it because for so many years he'd been laughed at or ridiculed for it.

Peyton knew it was a joke but her smile became a bit more strained. She didn't even like knowing her own future, but she was more worried about him finding out about her past or present. She felt more at ease once he explained it and the fact that she wouldn't have to state her questions aloud. That made her feel a bit more at ease. Pip listened intently, watching him brighten as he spoke of the thing he seemed to love most.

She was suddenly more conscious of the rain beating her shoulders. It had changed, like it was telling her to go somewhere...so she obeyed. "What do you say to a private reading then? Is right now okay for you?" She smiled and looked up at the rain clouds, her eyelids fluttering to keep the water out of her eyes. "But I think we would be better off going inside."

Jasper looked up at the sky, blinking away the rain that hit his face and found its way into his eyes. One hand lifted to wipe at them before he looked back at Peyton. He was surprised that she'd asked for a private reading, and he wasn't even sure why that surprised him so much. So far she'd seemed to be interested in what he was saying. The thought of reading for someone other than his mother made him a bit nervous though. More nervous than he'd already been.

"Inside would probably be best for a reading." He admitted, stammering a bit at the end. He hated that he tended to stammer and stutter when he got nervous. His mother always said it added a charm to him. Jasper didn't agree. "I'd have to get my cards from my dormitory." That got him thinking about where they'd do the reading, and he almost asked but was distracted by a loud rumble of thunder and a bright streak of lightning to their left.

They started walking toward the castle but when Peyton saw and heard the lightning and thunder simultaneously she knew it was too close for comfort and sprung into action. Pip was very much like that. Ready to do something at the drop of a hat. She was crazy, spontaneous, impulsive...but that's what made her so fun to be around most of the time. She grabbed Jasper's and started to run toward the castle, at first slow so she didn't rip his arm out of it's socket, and then speeding up.

Once they were safe inside the castle Pip let Jasper's hand go gently. She grabbed her wand out of her pocket and with a quick flick she was dry. She shook out her hair so that she was sure the rain hadn't made it knotty but she was good. Then Peyton turned her wand on Jasper and used the same charm to dry him off as well. "Viola!"

She went back to what he was saying outside before they had been distracted by Mother Nature. "Well we might as well do it up there, don't you think? I mean...all of your dormmates are probably at dinner anyway." It seemed like a perfectly logical plan to her, but then Pip decided to give him another option, should he not want a girl he had just met in his room. "Or we could go to the library."

There was something about being out of the rain that made Jasper feel wistful and even a little lonely even though he wasn't alone at all. He looked behind his shoulder at the closing door the castle half wishing that he was still outside in the storm, but then shook his head and turned his attention to the girl with him, who was in fact drying herself and him off at that very moment. He smiled appreciatively. "Thank you."

"That's fine." Jasper agreed, a little too quickly, just as she gave the second option. His face went a little read. He was nervous, again, still. It made him respond in strange ways. He gave her a smile, shrugged and started walking. "I don't mind, and even if they came back, they'd probably just tease me about having a girl in the room. Doesn't happen often, even if I am just reading your cards." Jasper said, his face pink with sudden embarrassment at his words. You weren't supposed to admit things like that, were you?

Peyton smiled brightly as she saw the blush rise in his face. It was just so cute when guys showed some vulnerability. "If they do come back and give you shit about it I'll make sure to hex them for you. Deal?" Pip smiled at the thought of hexing all the 7th year gryffindor boys, most of whom were her friends. They'd probably give her just as many digs as he got. She wasn't afraid to smack Frank upside the head if he was mean. He was like a big brother to her anyway and they just had that kind of relationship. Peyton loved it.

She followed Jasper up to his dorm silently, walking just a step behind him all the way. She wanted to ask him a whole bunch of questions just because she was naturally curious about people, but they all sounded really corny inside her head. She didn't mind silence, but she was afraid Jasper might, so she said, "Did you do a reading for yourself yet today...or this week?" The question felt a bit unfinished so she added, "What did it say?" Was I in it? she wondered silently to herself.

"Deal." He said, wondering when the blush on his face would go down. It didn't not the entire time they walked. The silence didn't really bother Jasper, he was far too wrapped up in his thoughts to really notice it. Peyton was going to be going to his room. Yeah, sure girls had been there, but they'd always been there for his dormmates, never because of him. He desperately couldn't remember if he'd left anything embarrassing out. Her question jolted him away from his thoughts.

"Oh, yes, I did one this morning." He said, turning his head to look at her. "It was only one card, the Spirit Dancer. Pretty much just told me that I should be self expressive, pursue something creative and spontaneous to help myself be free." He spoke as they arrived at the Gryffindor portrait. Jasper led her inside, then to his room and stood awkwardly near the door motioning for her to come inside.

Peyton looked around the room, recognizing the familiarity. Every year the Gryffindor dorm looked practically the same. Same amount of beds, same messy boys. Peyton had been in there quite a few times over the years, and was still surprised that she hadn't met Jasper. Peyton scanned the room for a specific trunk and when she spotted it she went over to that bed, took off her shoes, and jumped on it, ruffling up the neatly made sheets. That was obviously done by the house elves, because she knew Frank didn't make his own bed...well, that nicely, at least.

She jumped off, smiling, very satisfied with herself. She realized Jasper must think she was absolutely crazy. "Frank's...oh nevermind." She swiped her hand throught the air, pushing off the explaination, realizing it would probably just confuse Jasper more. She was just messing with Frank and Jasper could probably see that for himself. She grabbed her shoes and swiftly glided across the floor over to Jasper's bed and sat down on it. She was hoping he didn't mind her casual nature, but that was something she couldn't really help.

"So I have to think of a question in my head, right?" Peyton pointed her right index finger to her temple, indicating where her brain was. She was funny like that, pointing out the obvious.

Jasper watched her with a slightly surprised expression. He knew that she was friends with Frank, because, well he'd seen her in the dorms before. He just assumed she'd never noticed him, and they'd never talked before. But he said nothing as she jumped on the bed, removed herself and then sat down on the edge of his bed. Jasper didn't say anything, just moved to the trunk at the foot of his bed, propping it open. He glanced up at her when she spoke.

"Yes, think of a question." He said with a smile before returning his attention to the trunk. His set of tarot cards lay in a neat stack on top of folded sweatshirt he hadn't worn in years. "You think of the question, and really think about the way everything feels around you, how you're connected to the Earth, and every person around you. Then you have to ask for guidance, and then, you can ask the cards."

Peyton wondered what she should ask. She thought about asking something easy...something that wasn't going to be too hard for the cards to read. Then she thought of something almost completely the opposite: she thought about something she could ask that when Jasper read the cards, he'd be confused and only she would know their true meaning. But if she did that and he asked her what she had asked she might have to tell one huge lie and Pip really wasn't sure she was up for that.

She closed her eyes, sitting serenly on the bed and thinking about the question she wanted to ask. Finally, she formulated one in her head. What does this ball hold in store for me. She decided to go with an easy question first. She had faith in Jasper, but she wasn't entirely sure about the cards. She wanted to make sure they were legit before she asked any questions that she truely wished to know the answers to, though she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to hear the answer to her first question either. What if it revealed something....secret? She decided to take her chances. Things like this were always a risk for someone like her.

Without opening her eyes Peyton muttered, "Okay, I'm ready." She felt her mind connect with everything around her, something that was abnormally easy for her because she was so sensitive. She tried to connect with everything in the room. When Peyton accidently touched Jasper's mind, though, she instantly tensed but then relaxed. If she stayed tense he would be even more suspicious, and for all she knew he hadn't even noticed the slight brush on his thoughts.

Jasper took his time getting the cards ready. He didn't know how to explain it to anyone who didn't have some semblance of the gift themselves, but when he held the cards he could feel their energy. They practically begged to be used, and Jasper usually indulged them as often as he could. He took a seat on the floor, crossing his legs and placed the cards in front of him. He watched Peyton, keeping his eyes on her face, even though they did want to wander.

After she spoke, Jasper jumped slightly, and he couldn't even begin to explain the feeling. He'd never felt anything like it before, but he brushed away all thoughts of it. Instead he focused on Peyton, on asking for guidance in answering whatever question she asked. Of course, it would be easier if he knew the question, but Jasper never liked to ask others what they were looking for answers for. "Pick a number, Pip." Jasper said, his voice somewhat low. He hoped that no one would walk in during the middle of this. It would disappoint him probably more than anything.

The corners of her lips twitched up slightly as he used her nickname for the first time. She loved the unique little word and they way only a select few close friends used it freely. Hearing it from someone new was a bit more exciting than she had thought. With her eyes still closed and her face serene she whispered, "Ummm...four." Peyton waited patiently. She thought intently on the question but she was also making sure that she kept her power in check. She didn't want to startle Jasper, if she hadn't already. She was too afraid to open her eyes to find out, and she wasn't sure if that would break some sort of trance. She stayed tranquil and waited for the outcome....good or bad.

Jasper nodded, even though her eyes were closed. He took the cards and divided them into stacks of four, then shuffled them slowly back together into one stack. Taking the cards, he splayed them out in an arc on the ground and looked up at Peyton. "I need you to pick four." He said, though he could already feel energy coming from specific cards, but it wasn't his place to choose them. Peyton needed to.

Peyton leaned down to find the cards that drew her in. She hovered her hand back and forth over the displayed cards, her eyes closed but her face not so serene. Her brow was furrowed a bit as if she were thinking. She wasn't...she just wanted it to look that way. She took longer than she needed to and was careful not to touch all four cards in their exact centers, though she knew where they were. She had been concealing this gift for a long time, so she knew how to do subtle things that would make all the difference. She didn't speak, and she didn't open her eyes. She waited for the next bit of instructions...or the reveal...whichever came.

The moment Peyton's fingers touched a card his own hand shot out and grabbed it, pulling it toward him and flipping it over, end on end, until all four sat before him. Most of the reading was done on intuition, based on his connection to the cards, their energy and the person he was doing the reading for. In this case it was Peyton, and he had no idea what question she'd asked, unlike when he did readings for himself.

With a slight frown on his face from concentration, Jasper stared at the cards before him. First there was The Guardian at the Gate, then two reversed cards in the form of The Friends and A Collective of Pixies, followed finally by Unity. He deliberated for a moment, allowing the energy to tell him what each of the cards really meant for Peyton. It took him a while to find his voice.

"Well, it seems to me that the first card you chose, The Guardian at the Gate is trying to warn you that there are new opportunities arising, or that you've already come into contact with. It's inevitable that it will come, but you mustn't rush it. It's most likely a significant change in your life, maybe emotional, maybe physical, even spiritually." Jasper glanced up at Peyton, feeling slightly lightheaded from the reading. He'd only gotten to one card, and already his energy was being used faster than he'd ever experienced. Taking a deep breath he continued.

"Then we have The Friends in a position of an obstacle. They usually mean that you'll have aid or support in something that you do, but here they've been reversed showing there will be some form of misunderstanding, possibly a fight. Things will get tangled, but you shouldn't shut yourself off from those who care about you." Jasper stopped again, looking at the third card. It was one that had come up for him earlier that day, in the same reversed position.

"A Collective of Pixies usually means that we do what we must willingly, without objection. We're happy to do it, we show true virtue, but in the reverse, this seems to be a warning of either the present or of the future, that you or someone near you will not keep promises, or do jobs halfway which will effect you." He paused, again, and then added in a rush, "The cards aren't specifically saying it, but I think it means you're going to have to be a good example to someone else, someone who isn't sure about their way yet."

"Finally we have Unity," Jasper's voice got low when he talked about this card, "She is your spiritual home. She tells us that we must always remember who we are, and avoid inner conflict. You must be true to yourself, and not be ashamed of anything to the point you keep it hidden, or else you will not be able to be truly one with yourself, and Unity knows this." Jasper felt slightly awkward then. He got so passionate sometimes with his readings, and usually he was alone. But here he was with Peyton. He gave a small shrug, not looking at her.

"We've got to close down the reading now." He explained, carefully taking her four cards and setting them aside. "Just breathe deeply and disconnect from everything, and don't forget to thank them for helping you." Jasper closed his eyes for a moment, letting the feel of the energy of the cards wash over him, and then he opened them, his hands feeling for the cards so he could stack them together.

"Sometimes the responses are vague... I hope they were helpful to your specific question." He said, in an almost apologetic tone, as if he may have failed her.
