WHO: Peyton and Jasper
WHAT: Whatever...
WHERE: Outside on the grounds
WHEN: 4th block - free period after Transfiguration
WHY: Peyton's bored and needs something to do
RATING: PG-PG13 tops
STATUS: Complete

Peyton was lying on her back in the soft grass of the grounds, staring up into the sunny sky. She was picking out shapes in the clouds, a lonely past time that she usually did when she was bored out of her mind. After class she ran down to her dorm to change out of her robe and then it seemed that all her friends had disappeared. She gave up looking for them. She had too much pent-up energy to anything but lie down in the sun, letting it drain a little from her since she couldn't find anything better to do. It was just one of those lazy days that she wished wasn't. Why couldn't today be a day where everyone just wanted to run around and have fun?

She wondered where her brother was, and her sister. She wondered where all her friends were. Where was Jamison when she really needed a good game of football? She heard a group of younger kids playing and giggling off to her left so she turned her head to see. They were so small they had to be first years. They were chasing each other, weaving around trees and other players trying to stay away from a few in particular. A bunch of them were frozen in oddly wide-legged stances waiting for others to "unfreeze" them. Pip smiled. She remembered playing tag as a child. Sometimes she wished she could go back and be young again...free to play fun nonsense games with her friends.

Peyton's daydreams were interrupted by a figure obstructing the sun from reaching her. She turned squinting to see who it was which was easier said than done. Whomever it was was standing just barely in front of the sun so they stood mostly in silohuette. She waited for the figure to speak first, cause she really didn't feel like moving to see who it was.

Jasper looked up at the sky, blinking away the rain that hit his face and found its way into his eyes. One hand lifted to wipe at them before he looked back at Peyton. He was surprised that she'd asked for a private reading, and he wasn't even sure why that surprised him so much. So far she'd seemed to be interested in what he was saying. The thought of reading for someone other than his mother made him a bit nervous though. More nervous than he'd already been.

"Inside would probably be best for a reading." He admitted, stammering a bit at the end. He hated that he tended to stammer and stutter when he got nervous. His mother always said it added a charm to him. Jasper didn't agree. "I'd have to get my cards from my dormitory." That got him thinking about where they'd do the reading, and he almost asked but was distracted by a loud rumble of thunder and a bright streak of lightning to their left.

They started walking toward the castle but when Peyton saw and heard the lightning and thunder simultaneously she knew it was too close for comfort and sprung into action. Pip was very much like that. Ready to do something at the drop of a hat. She was crazy, spontaneous, impulsive...but that's what made her so fun to be around most of the time. She grabbed Jasper's and started to run toward the castle, at first slow so she didn't rip his arm out of it's socket, and then speeding up.

Once they were safe inside the castle Pip let Jasper's hand go gently. She grabbed her wand out of her pocket and with a quick flick she was dry. She shook out her hair so that she was sure the rain hadn't made it knotty but she was good. Then Peyton turned her wand on Jasper and used the same charm to dry him off as well. "Viola!"

She went back to what he was saying outside before they had been distracted by Mother Nature. "Well we might as well do it up there, don't you think? I mean...all of your dormmates are probably at dinner anyway." It seemed like a perfectly logical plan to her, but then Pip decided to give him another option, should he not want a girl he had just met in his room. "Or we could go to the library."

There was something about being out of the rain that made Jasper feel wistful and even a little lonely even though he wasn't alone at all. He looked behind his shoulder at the closing door the castle half wishing that he was still outside in the storm, but then shook his head and turned his attention to the girl with him, who was in fact drying herself and him off at that very moment. He smiled appreciatively. "Thank you."

"That's fine." Jasper agreed, a little too quickly, just as she gave the second option. His face went a little read. He was nervous, again, still. It made him respond in strange ways. He gave her a smile, shrugged and started walking. "I don't mind, and even if they came back, they'd probably just tease me about having a girl in the room. Doesn't happen often, even if I am just reading your cards." Jasper said, his face pink with sudden embarrassment at his words. You weren't supposed to admit things like that, were you?

Peyton smiled brightly as she saw the blush rise in his face. It was just so cute when guys showed some vulnerability. "If they do come back and give you shit about it I'll make sure to hex them for you. Deal?" Pip smiled at the thought of hexing all the 7th year gryffindor boys, most of whom were her friends. They'd probably give her just as many digs as he got. She wasn't afraid to smack Frank upside the head if he was mean. He was like a big brother to her anyway and they just had that kind of relationship. Peyton loved it.

She followed Jasper up to his dorm silently, walking just a step behind him all the way. She wanted to ask him a whole bunch of questions just because she was naturally curious about people, but they all sounded really corny inside her head. She didn't mind silence, but she was afraid Jasper might, so she said, "Did you do a reading for yourself yet today...or this week?" The question felt a bit unfinished so she added, "What did it say?" Was I in it? she wondered silently to herself.

"Deal." He said, wondering when the blush on his face would go down. It didn't not the entire time they walked. The silence didn't really bother Jasper, he was far too wrapped up in his thoughts to really notice it. Peyton was going to be going to his room. Yeah, sure girls had been there, but they'd always been there for his dormmates, never because of him. He desperately couldn't remember if he'd left anything embarrassing out. Her question jolted him away from his thoughts.

"Oh, yes, I did one this morning." He said, turning his head to look at her. "It was only one card, the Spirit Dancer. Pretty much just told me that I should be self expressive, pursue something creative and spontaneous to help myself be free." He spoke as they arrived at the Gryffindor portrait. Jasper led her inside, then to his room and stood awkwardly near the door motioning for her to come inside.

Peyton looked around the room, recognizing the familiarity. Every year the Gryffindor dorm looked practically the same. Same amount of beds, same messy boys. Peyton had been in there quite a few times over the years, and was still surprised that she hadn't met Jasper. Peyton scanned the room for a specific trunk and when she spotted it she went over to that bed, took off her shoes, and jumped on it, ruffling up the neatly made sheets. That was obviously done by the house elves, because she knew Frank didn't make his own bed...well, that nicely, at least.

She jumped off, smiling, very satisfied with herself. She realized Jasper must think she was absolutely crazy. "Frank's...oh nevermind." She swiped her hand throught the air, pushing off the explaination, realizing it would probably just confuse Jasper more. She was just messing with Frank and Jasper could probably see that for himself. She grabbed her shoes and swiftly glided across the floor over to Jasper's bed and sat down on it. She was hoping he didn't mind her casual nature, but that was something she couldn't really help.

"So I have to think of a question in my head, right?" Peyton pointed her right index finger to her temple, indicating where her brain was. She was funny like that, pointing out the obvious.

Jasper watched her with a slightly surprised expression. He knew that she was friends with Frank, because, well he'd seen her in the dorms before. He just assumed she'd never noticed him, and they'd never talked before. But he said nothing as she jumped on the bed, removed herself and then sat down on the edge of his bed. Jasper didn't say anything, just moved to the trunk at the foot of his bed, propping it open. He glanced up at her when she spoke.

"Yes, think of a question." He said with a smile before returning his attention to the trunk. His set of tarot cards lay in a neat stack on top of folded sweatshirt he hadn't worn in years. "You think of the question, and really think about the way everything feels around you, how you're connected to the Earth, and every person around you. Then you have to ask for guidance, and then, you can ask the cards."

Peyton wondered what she should ask. She thought about asking something easy...something that wasn't going to be too hard for the cards to read. Then she thought of something almost completely the opposite: she thought about something she could ask that when Jasper read the cards, he'd be confused and only she would know their true meaning. But if she did that and he asked her what she had asked she might have to tell one huge lie and Pip really wasn't sure she was up for that.

She closed her eyes, sitting serenly on the bed and thinking about the question she wanted to ask. Finally, she formulated one in her head. What does this ball hold in store for me. She decided to go with an easy question first. She had faith in Jasper, but she wasn't entirely sure about the cards. She wanted to make sure they were legit before she asked any questions that she truely wished to know the answers to, though she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to hear the answer to her first question either. What if it revealed something....secret? She decided to take her chances. Things like this were always a risk for someone like her.

Without opening her eyes Peyton muttered, "Okay, I'm ready." She felt her mind connect with everything around her, something that was abnormally easy for her because she was so sensitive. She tried to connect with everything in the room. When Peyton accidently touched Jasper's mind, though, she instantly tensed but then relaxed. If she stayed tense he would be even more suspicious, and for all she knew he hadn't even noticed the slight brush on his thoughts.

Jasper took his time getting the cards ready. He didn't know how to explain it to anyone who didn't have some semblance of the gift themselves, but when he held the cards he could feel their energy. They practically begged to be used, and Jasper usually indulged them as often as he could. He took a seat on the floor, crossing his legs and placed the cards in front of him. He watched Peyton, keeping his eyes on her face, even though they did want to wander.

After she spoke, Jasper jumped slightly, and he couldn't even begin to explain the feeling. He'd never felt anything like it before, but he brushed away all thoughts of it. Instead he focused on Peyton, on asking for guidance in answering whatever question she asked. Of course, it would be easier if he knew the question, but Jasper never liked to ask others what they were looking for answers for. "Pick a number, Pip." Jasper said, his voice somewhat low. He hoped that no one would walk in during the middle of this. It would disappoint him probably more than anything.

The corners of her lips twitched up slightly as he used her nickname for the first time. She loved the unique little word and they way only a select few close friends used it freely. Hearing it from someone new was a bit more exciting than she had thought. With her eyes still closed and her face serene she whispered, "Ummm...four." Peyton waited patiently. She thought intently on the question but she was also making sure that she kept her power in check. She didn't want to startle Jasper, if she hadn't already. She was too afraid to open her eyes to find out, and she wasn't sure if that would break some sort of trance. She stayed tranquil and waited for the outcome....good or bad.

Jasper nodded, even though her eyes were closed. He took the cards and divided them into stacks of four, then shuffled them slowly back together into one stack. Taking the cards, he splayed them out in an arc on the ground and looked up at Peyton. "I need you to pick four." He said, though he could already feel energy coming from specific cards, but it wasn't his place to choose them. Peyton needed to.

Peyton leaned down to find the cards that drew her in. She hovered her hand back and forth over the displayed cards, her eyes closed but her face not so serene. Her brow was furrowed a bit as if she were thinking. She wasn't...she just wanted it to look that way. She took longer than she needed to and was careful not to touch all four cards in their exact centers, though she knew where they were. She had been concealing this gift for a long time, so she knew how to do subtle things that would make all the difference. She didn't speak, and she didn't open her eyes. She waited for the next bit of instructions...or the reveal...whichever came.

The moment Peyton's fingers touched a card his own hand shot out and grabbed it, pulling it toward him and flipping it over, end on end, until all four sat before him. Most of the reading was done on intuition, based on his connection to the cards, their energy and the person he was doing the reading for. In this case it was Peyton, and he had no idea what question she'd asked, unlike when he did readings for himself.

With a slight frown on his face from concentration, Jasper stared at the cards before him. First there was The Guardian at the Gate, then two reversed cards in the form of The Friends and A Collective of Pixies, followed finally by Unity. He deliberated for a moment, allowing the energy to tell him what each of the cards really meant for Peyton. It took him a while to find his voice.

"Well, it seems to me that the first card you chose, The Guardian at the Gate is trying to warn you that there are new opportunities arising, or that you've already come into contact with. It's inevitable that it will come, but you mustn't rush it. It's most likely a significant change in your life, maybe emotional, maybe physical, even spiritually." Jasper glanced up at Peyton, feeling slightly lightheaded from the reading. He'd only gotten to one card, and already his energy was being used faster than he'd ever experienced. Taking a deep breath he continued.

"Then we have The Friends in a position of an obstacle. They usually mean that you'll have aid or support in something that you do, but here they've been reversed showing there will be some form of misunderstanding, possibly a fight. Things will get tangled, but you shouldn't shut yourself off from those who care about you." Jasper stopped again, looking at the third card. It was one that had come up for him earlier that day, in the same reversed position.

"A Collective of Pixies usually means that we do what we must willingly, without objection. We're happy to do it, we show true virtue, but in the reverse, this seems to be a warning of either the present or of the future, that you or someone near you will not keep promises, or do jobs halfway which will effect you." He paused, again, and then added in a rush, "The cards aren't specifically saying it, but I think it means you're going to have to be a good example to someone else, someone who isn't sure about their way yet."

"Finally we have Unity," Jasper's voice got low when he talked about this card, "She is your spiritual home. She tells us that we must always remember who we are, and avoid inner conflict. You must be true to yourself, and not be ashamed of anything to the point you keep it hidden, or else you will not be able to be truly one with yourself, and Unity knows this." Jasper felt slightly awkward then. He got so passionate sometimes with his readings, and usually he was alone. But here he was with Peyton. He gave a small shrug, not looking at her.

"We've got to close down the reading now." He explained, carefully taking her four cards and setting them aside. "Just breathe deeply and disconnect from everything, and don't forget to thank them for helping you." Jasper closed his eyes for a moment, letting the feel of the energy of the cards wash over him, and then he opened them, his hands feeling for the cards so he could stack them together.

"Sometimes the responses are vague... I hope they were helpful to your specific question." He said, in an almost apologetic tone, as if he may have failed her.
