note; We accidentally posted it on Phoenix's journal and we didn't realize until now.

It was a night that had been the root of Phoenix Malfoy's excitement for many sleepless nights, but not for the reason others around him seemed to be. Anticipation and longing, feelings that which were foreign for the young Malfoy had been a constant since the last time he had seen Dominique. It had been a long while since he had something that held so much of his interest, held so much promise that losing it would be the cause for much despair and regret on his part. With her, it was all too effortless to no longer hide- to just be himself and have her acceptance. He knew the conncetion between them that he had allowed to grow was getting stronger, but instead of feeling imprisoned, enslaved by the emotions he was unwilling to feel, he has ceased fighting against them and embrace such emotions. He fought for her, and his very being believed it was the right thing. Happiness used to be a luxury in his world, but she seemed to effortlessly give it to him every moment they were together. How could he possibly turn away from the only person who has ever made him feel so alive?

It wasn't too difficult to discover that the day held much more reason for celebration. Dominique's birthday was today, and as Phoenix paced the empty classroom they had agreed to meet in in his formal robes he could feel his fingers tingle with anticipation as he waited for her arrival. He had perceived it only suitable for her to attend the Ball with her family, with her friends. She deserved her happiness for the evening, and with the small dinner set-up he has assembled in the room, he only hoped he could give her more of it. Candles were strewn across the dark stone floor, some floating in level with him on the area that surrounded the decorated table, bathing the room with a faint orange glow. He would have preferred to use a more decent table and chair set that the unused ones he was left with, but he would work with whatever he had. After minutes fo silent pacing, he took a seat on one of the chairs, his face set on his usual cool expression, despite the hard thrumming of his heart, hands tapping against the wooden desk as his anticipation slowly crawled towards its peak with every passing second...

Mini had stayed until halfway through the ball, which was longer than what she had first planned on. But staying longer meant she could make up a more credible excuse like saying she was tired. It was easier to believe she was tired when she had spent more than an hour talking and dancing than just half an hour. And she had fun, but not nearly as much as she knew she would've had if she had been with Phoenix. He made it all better, and he didn't even need to speak to do it. Just being next to him put a smile on her face instantly, she had been hiding it lately though, so no one would suspect.

Once she was out of the ball and after making a quick stop on the bathroom to make sure her makeup and hair were still perfect, she made her way to the empty classroom being sure that no one was following her. When she was outside the room, she smoothed her dress before opening the door and slipping into the room. Her breath got caught up in her throat when she saw the candles and the dinner-set up. She had not been expecting any of that, just Phoenix waiting for her with a small smile on his face. But what she saw made her smile and blush. And for the first time that day, her smile was genuine. "Hi." She said softly, walking toward him.

The strange elation that overwhelemed him at the first feel of her distinct presence, caused him to stand on his feet as she entered the room. His breath got caught in his throat as he drank in the sight of her, instantly in awe. He crossed the room to her, meeting her half way. "Hi." was his gentle responce, his tone silent but warm. "You look even better than I pictured." His hand circled one of her thin wrists while the other moved behind her to throw a locking charm on the door he had just closed, then a silencing charm over their confined space. "How was the Ball?" he asked, leading her to one of the chairs. "Your cheeks are flushed. Did you dance with anyone?" His voice remained conversational, neutral. Surprisingly, the thought of any other man dancing with her didn't summon the jealousy that could have arose in others. He had requested that she danced with someone else, but he knew if it could only be up to him, she would only have stayed in his arms for the entire evening.

Mini smiled at him. "Thank you. You look very good." The moment he touched her, a warm feeling washed over her and she felt her cheeks become hotter. It had been so long since she got that feeling, probably since the last time they spoke. And she missed it, she missed the way he made her cheeks flush and how he always noticed it and asked if she was cold. It was cute.

She gave him a nod as she let him take her to the chairs. "With a few boys, but mainly with my brother and my cousins." She hadn't been in the mood to dance with anyone, really; but she had promised him, so she danced with a couple of boys from her year.

The air around him once again smelled of her, or her sweet subtle cologne. It was one that Phoenix had grown accustomed to, and now that it was at its most potent he felt a sudden rush of ease loosen his bones. A small nod was given at her offered compliment as he led her to her chair, his hand still lose around her wrist. An arrangement of Casablaca Liles was propped on the center of the table, but a bouquet of red and white flowers - jasmins, lilies and roses- was gently placed on her side of the table. "These are all yours," he said gesturing to both flower arrangements, but took the red and white bouquet and gave it to her. All of them still held the mean thats alaay attached to his gifts, and he wondered how long the other will decipher them. He pulled out his chair for her, and waited for her to take her seat, a smile -his smile for her- on his features. "Were you able to enjoy yourself then?"

Mini looked at the flower arrangements and smiled. He had been the only boy that had ever brought her flowers -- she wasn't counting that boy back at home that took the flowers from her mum's garden and pretended he had bought them -- and he always seem to know which one to get for each special moment. "Thank you. They're lovely." She took the bouquet in her hands and brought it closer to her to smell it. She loved the way jasmins smelt, and it mixed so well with the roses.

Her eyes dropped from his to his lips for a moment, and she saw his smile. It was her smile, the one he had for her. Her own lips curled into a smile and she nodded in reply. "I did. But not as much as I will now." She said as she sat down.

The look of awe on her features was all the gratitude Phoenix knew he could ever ask. With much careful grace, he pushed her seat in once she had settled. "You're welcome." Slightly bent, he leaned in close until his left was left to linger near the slope of her neck. A sudden urge was pulling at his chest, a foreign, warm sensation that was encouraging him to lean just a little closer- perhaps until his lips touched her skin. With the soft sound of her inhaled breath from smelling his flowers, he snapped out of his momentary stupor and straightened, then moved swiftly to his place.

Phoenix took his seat, his actions quick and silent- the chair didn't even make a sound when he took his place. A smaller table was placed beside him, lined with carefully fixed meal, upon his request from the ever-efficient house elves. After setting aside the centerpiece, he placed the appetizer tray of various breads and dips, fruits and cheeses in front of them, a starter that which he assumed would be perfect for light chatter. With a subtle gesture of his hand, he asked her to help herself before he did as he requesting, taking a grape and placing the fruit in his mouth. It was cool and sweet at his first bite. "Have I expressed how much I am pleased to see you've come?" he asked, still with the subtlest smile. "For I am. And I doubt I could even express just how much..."

Mini was very aware of his closseness as he leaned in and she wondered if he would do something such as kissing her cheek or her neck. She wouldn't have minded if he had. She had been wanting to know how his lips would feel against her skin, or better against her own. She had even thought about taking that step herself and kiss him. But she was afraid of pushing things too much and too quickly. What if he didn't like it that she was too bold and kissed him?

She took a strawberry after he placed the tray on the table, taking a small bite and tasting the juicy and sweet fruit. "You don't need to say it, I'm quite sure I know how glad you are that I'm here. Just as glad as I am." She replied with a smile, taking another bite. "Being here with you is the best birthday present I could ever get."

Phoenix's smile widened as his eyes retreated to his plate. "You've just deprived me of the opportunity to expose the fact that I am aware it is your birthday." His light tone had a hint of teasing in it. "Did you know I knew all along?" Casually, he plucked another fruit- an apple slice- and took a bite. "But no matter, I suppose what's important is that we're here- you're here with me, happy and smiling, for you've allowed me the honor to be with you today." After finishing his apple, he took a piece of bread, tore a small piece and placed it in his mouth, chewing thoughtfully. "Is there anything interesting that occured in the Ball that you'd wish to share?" Unknowingly, his body was leanign closer towards her, his features bathed in the light orange glow from the candles. "Please. Talk. Indulge on details. I've had to endure too long a time without hearing you speak..."

"Oh!" Mini gasped, bringing one hand over her mouth in surprise as her eyes widened. She felt her cheeks blushing in embarrassment. "I didn't know you knew." She said softly. She didn't remember having told him when her birthday was, but maybe she did. Or maybe he had found out by himself. Either way, she was really touched that he had remembered, even if she had ruined his surprise. "I'm really sorry, Phoenix." She apologized before taking the last bite and finishing the strawberry.

The change of subject made her forget about the embarrassment and she felt her cheeks return to her normal colour; though they didn't last too long that way and soon they were flushing soft pink after listening to his last words. He always knew how to make her blush, even if she was sure he didn't do it on purpose. "Well, I don't think anything interesting happened, at least to me, other than some boys asking me to dance with them, which my brother tried to scare away... and succeeded at one point." She smiled, chuckling softly. She continued telling him everything that happened at the ball, feeling more and more relaxed as she spoke and laugh softly. She just wished he would've been there to see her and dance with her. She would've loved that.

"Oh." Phoenix was the sort who barely allowed his emotions to reflect on his features- but not it was apparent that his surprise matched hers. A small laugh. "I was rendered confused there for a moment. But be at ease. You needn't apologize..." It was easy to admit such things to her, even his meekest weaknesses, when it was forbidden to do so with the other people he knew...

Another smiled crossed his lips as he listened to her speak. "Who are these men who asked for your hand to dance?" his tone was conversational, merely curious. "And I suppose I am not truly suprised that your cousins behaved the way they did. Only surprising that I didn't have any... unpleasant encounters with them during the last Ball." Her light laugh caused a flutter in his insides, and he joined her, before reaching for the plate after he was done with his bread. "Shall we move on to the next course? I have a lot more in store. We mustn't waste our appetites on bread and fruit..."

Mini smiled softly at him and nodded. "And since you know my birthday, I think it's only fair taht I know yours... Or should I find out by myself?" She wouldn't know where to start, since she wasn't particularly friendly with any Slytherin other than her cousin Albus and her brother - and she couldn't ask them without raising any suspicion. Nevertheless, she'd try and find out if she had to.

She was a bit hesitant about giving names but his tone made her feel like he was just curious and did not want to harm or threat any of the boys that danced with her. So she told him who they were. "I think they were too busy with my other female cousins to notice us in a corner." She replied, chuckling softly. "Sure." She said, curious to know what else he ahd brought.

"And how is simply telling you defined as 'fair'?" Phoenix asked with a slight quirk of a challenging brow. "Would you want to find out for yourself?" It wasn't as if he had the intention of depriving her from such knowledge; he merely wished to know how much she wanted to know his birthday- if it had been as much as he wanted to know hers before his recent discovery.

It was his request that she danced with men in the dance. Why would he get upset over it? His hands quickly exchanged the big platter for two smaller plates that held their first course, a modest serving of a pasta dish with light white cream sauce. The smell of herbs and cream filled his senses as he took his first bite. "I didn't ever believe the elves could match fine dining, but I suppose I am wrong." he said, in mild awe. His eyes were centered on her as she sat before him, his eyes gentler, and less guarded now than how they were outside the walls of their room. When he briefly met her gaze, he smiled at her, the feeling of contentment on his chest. "Tell me what you've been busying yourself with lately. I don't see you around enough to know what you've been doing..."

Mini gave him a small playful smile and raised a brow to match his. "I only said it would be fair for me to know. It'd be easier if you told me, but I have no problem whatsover finding out for myself." She was a smart girl. Even if she didn't know where to start, she would find a way.

She was glad she hadn't eaten much at the Ball and was still quite hungry, otherwise she wasn't sure she would be able to eat much more than the first course. The pasta looked delicious. And after taking the first bite she discovered that it tasted delicious too. "Or maybe it tastes better because we're in good company." She said with a smile, meeting his gaze. She shrugged lightly at his question, swallowing her bite. "Just homework and the clubs. They take most of my time now, specially the dancing one." She replied, pausing a moment before continuin. "And what about you?"

And Phoenix didn't doubt for a second that she was smart or resourceful, so it was with a genuine smile that he had spoken. "Then I would love to see you try to find it out for yourself." he said. "Then you get something special if you do."

Fingers delicately twirled his silver fork over the pasta, before taking the minute serving in his mouth. She was right, the taste was light on his tongue, just the way he liked it. "I'm thinking along the same lines." he told her, smiling over his plate. At her mention of the word 'dance, the wheels in his mind started to turn. "Might we put such to good use?" he asked, then gave the sharpest flick of his wand on the corner, where there stood an onld recorder. Immediately a light tune started to fill the air between them. "It hasn't escaped my attention that we had not danced at all during the last Ball. I would be honored if you'd join me for a dance. Now or later, would depend on you..."

Mini grinned, giving him a little nod. "It's a done." Now she would definitely try find out for herself.

"I think that's a good idea." She replied, smiling softly at him. She had noticedit too, they didn't dance at the Christmas Ball and she would've loved that. Mini loved to dance and she was curious to know about his dancing abilities. "We could dance now if you want. And later too." She smiled, taking one last bite of her food and swallowing just ij case he decided to dance now. The food would probably get cold, but she didn't really care. She wasn't there for the food.

Phoenix's eyes lit up with silent admiration at the other's confidence. "So certain you're going to discover it?" he asked. "Do you have connections I should know about? Or perhaps should be worried about?"

At her encouragement, Phoenix took his napkin and quickly dabbed the corners of his lips for any food residue. He stood on his light feet and made his way towards her. A hand reached out to take hers, and tugged encouragingly. "There'e no better time than the present, I suppose." he offered, smiling. "May I have the honor of this dance?"

"Of course I am." Mini let out a soft laugh. "I don't think you should be worried... At least for know." She added, smiling playfully. Maybe she could trick her brother into finding out; or ask that blonde fifth year that was unusually friendly for a Slytherin... Well, she would think about it in another time. Now she wanted to enjoy the evening with him.

She watched him get up and take her hand, which she gladly let him take, and smiled. "You may." She said softly, raising from her chair.
