WHO: Marcus & Legolas
WHAT: A reunion of friends
WHEN: Day 16
WHERE: The citizens' cafeteria
RATING: PG?
STATUS: Incomplete

Marcus stared into the depths of his soup, his face a blank mask of torment. He was only half-aware of the way his right-hand was idly pushing his spoon around the bottom of the bowl. His entire being was completely numb, and he was not really paying attention to anything except his pain. How had he even come to be in the dining room? Oh, that's right. He hadn't felt like cooking. He didn't feel like anything. Except loss. And sorrow. And pain.

Slowly his hand stopped stirring, no part of his mind spared to motivate it. His vacant expression stared back at him from the glassy surface of his consommé. Marcus didn't see it. He saw another face, Tonks' face. She screamed as she fell away from him, down the black hole of his soup bowl, again and again.

As the days went by, Legolas found himself thinking more and more often about Giselle. It made him a little uneasy. What did it mean, that a human should occupy such a strong place in his mind? He wasn't sure he was entirely comfortable with it, but then, why not? After all, she was his friend, and she shared living accomadations with him. Why shouldn't he think of her? And she was undoubtedly beautiful, and elves love beauty. Still, it was odd.

He'd wandered into the cafeteria more out of instinct than anything else. He wasn't really all that hungry, but something told him he should be there. Pushing his thoughts of Giselle away, he glanced around, his eyes the hazel green colour that showed he was worried about something, or thoughtful, to people who had spent a lot of time around him. Those orbs scanned the room, and then widened when he saw the dark-haired ranger sitting at the table, playing with his soup.

"Marcus?" He approached, his head tilted to the side. He was sure of his identification of the other man, but he seemed... different, somehow. Marcus had always seemed so optimistic, so cheerful, and now he looked like someone who is barely surviving from one moment to the next. If Marcus were an elf, Legolas suspected he would be in the Halls of Mandos by now, having basically killed himself with his emotions. "Marcus, what troubles you so?"

Though Marcus was generally unaware of the existence of those around him, he had enough presence of self to respond to the sound of his own name being called. When Legolas approached him, he stopped moving his spoon and sighed with the effort of tearing himself away from his grief. Managing to look up, he saw his elven friend's pleasant countenance, but could not manage any expressions of enthusiasm in response.

"Legolas. Hello."

His duty done, he sighed again and turned back to his soup, only to stop when the elf continued speaking. Closing his eyes briefly, he steeled himself for an extended conversation.

"Tonks is gone."

Legolas, usually so cheerful, found himself quite worried about his friend. He had spent quite a lot of time with Marcus, and had enjoyed that time. But now, his friend was clearly desolate, and Legolas eyed him warily. What if humans could feel misery so strongly that they could actually kill themselves just with that emotion? He'd heard that was an elven trait, not a human one, but he was still worried. So he seated himself opposite his friend at the table without being invited.

"Tonks is... but is she not the one who was carrying your child? Oh, no! This cannot be! Are you certain? How long as she been gone? Could she not be engrossed in a book or song?" Because, of course, that was something he, himself, would do. "Perhaps she will soon be back."

Unable to resist due to the the human's obvious suffering, he reached across the table and took one of Marcus' hands in both of his, trying to offer companionship and comfort. He was basically kind-hearted, and couldn't bear to see someone in misery.

Marcus, suddenly aware that someone was holding his hand, looked up to see Legolas's deeply-concerned eyes watching him. Hearing the elf's words he found himself unexpectedly touched by his friend's caring. Cracking a bit, his eyes moistened as his voice became more animated.

"No, she is not engrossed in book or song. She is gone! I saw it with my own eyes. The earth opened underneath her and she was swallowed into darkness. She is gone and she will not return."

Momentarily overcome with his passion, the Ranger swallowed the lump in his throat and looked defiantly at Legolas, daring him to show him evidence that the pain he felt was unnecessary.

Legolas remembered how he, himself, was taken all that time ago from Middle Earth. It had been similar to what Marcus was discribing now, and he felt his heart break a little for his friend. For once at a loss for words, he simply sat there squeezing his friends hand, allowing him his pain.

"I am deeply grieved to hear this. What sort of monster is this king? To allow us to love each other, and start families, and then to have it all shatter around us. It is nothing short of cruel." His voice, while pitched low so that other people couldn't overhear, was passionate. Once more, Giselle came into his thoughts. How would he react if she were to leave? But surely that was different than how Marcus felt about Tonks.

The defiant look was met with a sympathetic one, and he struggled with words. Normally, he would make some light comment, but he knew that wasn't at all appropriate. So he settled for just being there, trying to be supportive.
