Day 11
Who:: Robin, Sarah and Torin
What:: Running the Labyrinth
When:: Early Morning
Where:: Uh... the Labyrinth
Rating:: PGish?
Status:: Incomplete

Robin rose early, before the sun could, and began to make his preparations for the Labyrinth. He filled a pack with food supplies from the kitchen, along with water. He also made sure that he had things with which to treat minor scrapes and lacerations. He ensured that his quiver was full of fletched arrows and his bow was restrung. He packed a change of clothing and an extra pair of boots. He also packed a fur-lined cloak in case it continued to snow.

When he was certain that he was ready to go, he dressed comfortably in traveling clothes and strapped his sword to his waist and slung his bow over his shoulder. Both his pack and his quiver went over the other and cinched tightly to assure mobility. With his key and his journal safely tucked away, Robin left his room and headed for the outdoors.

He was surprised to see that the snow was sparse and he wondered if it would melt away before it snowed again. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, so he hurried along until he found his way to the entrance of the Labyrinth. Casting his gaze around, Robin searched for the companion he was to have on the journey, Sarah.

Sarah had prepared for the journey into the Labyrinth previous that evening. Her kitchen raid included some fruit, bottles of water, bread, cheese, and three slices of Ned's freshly made apple pies. Unlike, Robin she didn't think to pack weapons. Sarah's helpful item of choice was an extra tube of lipstick, for marking passages they had previously been down.

Unable to sleep for most of the night, she was already up and waiting by the 'entrance' to the Labyrinth. Of course, like before it was impossible to actually see the entrance. The wall stretched up high and in both directions for as far as the eye could see.

Robin would have discovered the young woman, pressed up against one of the walls in the far right direction. Her palms were pressed flat against the mossy stone and she seemed to be feeling around the stone wall for something.

Torin was royally frustrated with this place's complete lack of decent supplies. She'd found a backpack, but it a primitive thing, without any of the conveniences she was used to. And there was a distinct lack of nonperishable food in the kitchen. No mess kit either, which was bad, because who knew how long they'd be gone? She'd packed what she could find, thankful that more basic supplies, a blanket, rope, a firestarter and such were easier to find.

With her implant offline, she'd had to set her slate's alarm, which had the unfortunate tendency to wake her up thinking she was under fire. She'd meant to have Ressk look at it, but she'd been shipped out to Big Yellow, and then Ventris before she'd had a chance. Today at least she got herself back under conscious control before doing much more than ripping the covers off and pulling her knife. Breathing deeply she dressed in the uniform. Combats would have been better - there were more features built into the smart fabric - but the black and gold uniform was better than nothing. She snapped her slate and knife onto her belt and walked to the Labyrinth, still feeling the lingering buzz of adrenaline.

There were two others already there, the man she'd met when she first arrived, and a younger looking woman. "Morning" she said tersely, looking around. No obvious threats, but she knew well such things could change all too quickly.

He finally spotted Sarah and walked toward her with a genial smile on his face. "Good morning, Lady Sarah." He watched her feel along the wall for something and paused for a moment. "What, ah, what are you doing?" He didn't want to be rude but he couldn't figure out any other way to phrase the question. He couldn't be positive, but he was pretty sure he'd just sung.

He turned at the sound of footsteps approaching and he found Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr approaching. He nodded to her and smiled. "Come to join the fun, Sergeant?" He didn't know why he called her by that name. He could have just as easily called her Torin, but it seemed more appropriate to call her by the title she had presented herself with at their first meeting. He also didn't know why the words had a melodic quality to them and the consternation was showing on his face.

He turned back and pointed to Sarah. "This is the Lady Sarah. She has been through this maze once before." True, they had been masked during the party, but Robin was good at judging height and haircolor. He would have known the lovely lady anywhere. And once she spoke, he knew it would confirm his guess. He just wondered if the others would sing, too.

Sarah paused in feeling along the wall when Robin made his arrival known, and made sure she was very careful to keep her left hand on the wall to hold her place. She offered both her, and the arriving Sergeant Kerr a warm smile. Despite the sudden change in weather she had chosen to keep layers on for the most part, just in case it decided to suddenly snow and drop in temperature again.

It's simple you see, for the eyes can not.
The entrance we seek is in plain site.

Sarah seemed suddenly besides herself when her words came out as song, that both her hands came up to cover her mouth suddenly. 'Of all the nerve!' Sarah thought in annoyance over this newest discovery, she could just picture the Goblin King staring into his crystals in his court and laughing at all of them. She could deal with winter, but having to sing?

Sarah cleared her throat, her face was a light shade of pink by now and motioned to the wall. She had lost her place, but the entrance was some where. It was just a matter of finding the spot where the wall was open and lead inside.

Considering she'd only vocalized a single word this morning so far, Torin hadn't noticed the singing, until the other two started doing so. Her first instinct was to think it was some joke or quirk on their part. These two seemed to know each other, and perhaps it was some sort of in joke she was not a part of.

Torin was not a fan of in jokes. In fact, it was fair to say they tended to piss her off.

"Cut the musical..." She nearly choked as her own words came out in song. And not even good song. Too many years of shouting orders on the battlefield and the parade ground hadn't left her with the most musically inclined voice. She knew it. That was why she didn't sing. Except here apparently. Maybe it wasn't a joke. She cleared her throat and tried again.

"Call me Torin" No, still singing. Well this would be fun.

He was finding all this singing business very strange, especially when both the women were doing it, too. It was downright embarrassing. Not because he didn't have a good voice, he was a rather nice sounding baritone, but the fact that he didn't have control over it was just wrong.

Sarah seemed surprised but not totally shocked and almost indignant at this involuntary singing. But then she knew the King and knew that this was probably his doing. They were all rather bothered by this, but it would do no good to stand around and stare at one another and not speak all day.

"As you wish, Torin." He turned to Sarah who was still feeling along the wall, and according to her sing-song words the entrance was in plain sight, but still invisible to them. He joined her at the wall and began to feel along it. His hand dipped out of sight a few seconds later and he knew he'd found the opening. It was concealed quite well.

"This must be it." He was trying not to talk as much, it was less humiliating that way. He looked to Sarah for confirmation and then to Torin. He could tell it was going to be a long day.

Sarah could only shake her head over the entire fiasco. Jareth was not without a sense of humor, though she wished he would keep it to himself. Her only relief was that even after years of avoiding musical production, her voice still seemed to be able to carry pitch and tune.

When Robin figured out what she had been singing about, she gave a nod as she noticed his hand vanish into the wall. "Yes!" She was already climbing through the open space in the wall, sadly there was no small blue worm in site to greet her this time.

"I took a left last time, but I doubt it's the same path." The Labyrinth was always changing, so it was impossible to tell if going right or left would lead them the correct way. The hidden walls and passages of course, offered them alternative routes to the Goblin City, they however would have to find those first.

Torin's eyes narrowed as she realized what Sarah was doing moments before the other woman went through the apparently solid wall. She sighed and repressed the urge to shudder.

"Walls" she muttered, wincing at the harshness of her singing voice. "Of course."

It wasn't hard to take the few steps to where Sarah had passed through. It wasn't even hard to step up to where she knew the opening was. But it took an extreme effort of will to just lift her arm to touch the wall. But there was nothing under her hand where a wall should be, and that comforted her. Big Yellow had always felt solid until it sucked you down or through. This was... like a simulation. That was it. This whole thing was just a big, crazy simulation. Suddenly she felt a whole lot better about this thing. She could do simulations.

"We sure there's only one way?" she asked, trying to sing quickly to save everyone the pain. "It's a maze. Might both be right?"

Sarah seemed elated that they'd found the entrance to the Labyrinth. He wasn't so sure he felt the same way, but she stepped throught and he turned to Torin. He didn't feel like it was safe for both women to precede him into the Labyrinth, so he hurriedly climbed through after Sarah to check for danger. It was relatively calm. Nothing but a light breeze confronting them at the moment. He glanced up and down the corridor they stood in before sticking his head out the opening and gesturing for Torin to join them.

When she had, he turned back to Sarah who was looking back and forth and musing aloud. He glanced down at Torin and gave her a small smile. He kept his voice low and steady, trying to control the vebrato as he unwillingly sang his words. "It sounds entirely plausible. The one thing I think we must not do is split up. We need to stick together." He glanced up and down the corridor. "Perhaps we should go right just to see where it takes us?" He glanced at Sarah for confirmation and lifted a brow.

His hand was steady on his bow, ready to remove it and shoot at whatever they might encounter. He raked his free hand through his mussed hair and took a step to his right. No use in standing around.

"Right is find by me," Sarah sung in agreement and then gave a nod. The last thing she wanted to do was get separated. If she hadn't been with Hoggle and the others her last time, she would have never made it through. Friends were the most important tools one could have going through this puzzle.

Sarah kept her hand on the closet wall as they proceeded down the first path. Her eyes were busy on the walls, keeping a closer look out for a break or perhaps any of the worms that made their homes in the wall. She wasn't against asking for directions this time around.

Torin's brain was running through a list of inventive profanity aimed at the so-called King of this place. At least this time there was someone guiding it all, and this wasn't some cracked alien ship mucking with here. It should have made her feel better. It didn't.

She pulled her slate off her belt and was about to bark out marching orders, when she realized that both of the people she was with were civilians. Well, okay, Robin looked like he could maybe hold his own with that archaic weapon of his, but neither of them were Marines. "Fuking civilians" she muttered as she set her slate to keep track of their progress. It might help, might not, but it was always better to have a map if possible.

"I'll rear guard" she sang, trying to more chant than sing. Honestly she'd have preferred to be on point, but Sarah said she'd been through this thing before and it was always best to trust experience.

Robin gave Torin a sideways glance as she muttered and cursed about civilians. Whatever those were. He assumed she meant Sarah and himself. He bit his tongue. No need to get into it before they really got into the Labyrinth. Besides, she was a woman, and he was more honorable than all that. He turned back to Sarah and gestured that she should continue down the chosen corridor.

Torin took up the rear, while he and Sarah walked side by side. He wanted to be in front in case they encountered something frighting or dangerous. She didn't have any weapons. Not that Torin did either. At least, not that Robin could tell. Whatever it was she had in her hand didn't look to him like it could do anything but perhaps be thrown.

He pulled his bow off his shoulder and knocked an arrow into it. He walked with it held out in front of him, not completely at the ready, but close enough. He was quick and could hit even the smallest target. He was even a challenge for that elf who didn't seem able to miss anything. He bit his tongue, not willing to sing anymore, and just continued around corners and down more corridors. They didn't seem to be getting anywhere. And it had been more than an hour already, he was sure.

Sarah did her best to ignore the heavy feeling of the air that followed around them as they kept heading down path. She wasn't worried like Torin or Robin seemed to be, but she did remain cautious. She had been told by Faith that she had run into vampires during her run through the Labyrinth. Sarah had never encountered though previously, but this place seemed to be change to fit those who traveled through it. She could only wonder what Jareth had in store for her this time around.

As the hour ticked away and dragged on, Sarah was beginning to wonder if they had missed a wall opening already. She had kept her left hand close to a nearby wall, but it had never slipped through to reveal an opening of sorts. Sarah sighed and kept her thoughts to herself, like the others she wasn't so keen on speaking when she was forced to sing every word.

She had her eyes set on the ground, and not a few steps later did she notice something red barely visible under the dirt. Sarah bent quickly and brushed away the grime and dirt with fingers until she exposed what appeared to be a red arrow. Time had eaten away at the color, but Sarah recognized the scribbled symbol. She had drawn it herself, with a tube of lipstick almost ten years ago. She was up before anyone could have asked any questions, she turned in the direction it was pointing. She knew it couldn't have been a coincidence and when she stepped forward to the wall across from the arrow she walked right through an invisible gap in the wall.

Sarah spotted another not to far away down the new corridor to the right, and she quickly took the lead. "This way!"

( Feel free to continue on without Sarah while I'm gone. If you want her to end up in some trouble, Robin and Torin are free to use her and rescue her in turn. I'll see you guys when I get back on tuesday 7/14! )

(OOC: Apologies on the delay, my notifications weren't working for some reason)

Her knife. Robin's bow. And one unarmed civilian girl who theoretically knew this place. Torin didn't like the situation. Not one bit. But complaining never did anything except annoy people and she was reluctant to sing anymore.

She was relived when Sarah found something familliar and went through the wall. At least these walls weren't scanning her like Big Yellow had. And it was a relief to actually be getting somewhere.

She hoped.

Robin followed Sarah's lead as they vanished through the gap in the wall. He waited for Torin to join them and then focused once again on the path ahead. But before Robin could begin to feel comfortable, a group of armed men came around the corner in front of them. They wore the insignia of the Sheriff of Nottingham and seemed not to notice the trio for a moment. But then one of the men spotted them and gave a shout. The other men looked up and then charged toward them.

Robin pulled the bow off his shoulder and slapped an arrow into it, pulling back on the string and letting it fly. It slammed into the chest of the foremost man and sent him sprawling backwards. The others looked startled for a moment but did not let up on their momentum. They continued to charge.

Robin loosed another arrow into another man's chest, leaving three other men to deal with. They were getting increasingly closer and waving their swords menacingly. He stepped in front of Sarah and glanced back. "Be careful, and stay behind me."

"Whoa!" Sarah found herself rather startled as the group of men came around the corner just ahead of them. She didn't recognize them right away, but when they begun to charge toward them and she saw the flash of the insignia she realized what they were. They must have been pulled in from Robin's world as well, and she guessed this was much like Faith had experienced. The other young woman had told her strange stories of meeting up with vampires and werewolfs. None of that seemed hard to believe now.

Sarah eased back against the closest wall as Robin released his first arrow. She had no weapon, and suddenly felt rather foolish for thinking that she didn't need one. Things hadn't been as dangerous as this before. With little she could do, she edged backward and hoped to remain out of any soldier's line of sight.

Torin almost smiled as the strangely dressed men started charging towards them. Now this was something she understood! Granted, she'd have killed for a KC or Benny, but the men only had swords. Swords she could handle.

Out of the corner of her eye she watched as Robin loosed his arrows at the men, mentally making a note to compliment his skill later. She took one, two running steps towards the men then dove to the side. Her shoulder impacted the stone path with a blast of pain that was sure to bruise later, but she rolled, pulling her knife as she did so. She struck out as one of the men passed her, neatly hamstringing both legs. He went down with a cry, and Torin finished the roll up onto her feet.

Two more. "Take the left!" she called to Robin. She'd have to trust he'd understand. Even she couldn't take on two at once armed only with a knife. Nothing she could do about it though. The combat rush was in her blood now, as she ran towards the man on the right. Hand to hand wasn't her best skill, but she was a Marine, and no fancy dressed man waving an archaic weapon could top that!

Robin was grateful when Sarah didn't put up a fuss, and he was momentarily worried about Torin as she charged toward the men with swords with only a knife in her hand. But he saw how handy she was with it when she severed the man's hamstrings and brought him down. He smiled slightly and heard her called command. He aimed another arrow at the man on the left and let it fly square into his chest. He fell back, clutching at the arrow that now protruded from his body.

He was inclined to think that because she had told him to take the left that she would handle the one on the right and he waited to see if she would dispatch him in a similar manner to the first. He glanced back at Sarah to be sure that she was alright and gave her a small smile. "Alright?"

Sarah couldn't help but be impressed by Torin. She really seemed to know how to handle herself in combat. She was very glad that she was on hand to help Robin dispatch their attackers. She could only assume they might be more trouble had it just been the two of them.

"Yes!" She nodded quickly as her eyes darted back to the last few remaining men. Torin quickly brought down right and leaving only one man left. Sarah wondered if he'd charge forward or try and run away.

The second man was almost easier to take down. She'd managed to come up on his non-weapon side, and a swift kick to the back of the knees not only knocked him down, but caused him to drop his sword. Eying the one remaining man still standing, Torin stepped in and set the edge of her knife against her foe's throat.

"Drop your sword or he dies" she sang, with an almost savage look on her face.
