Day One - In the Beginning
Who: Jareth and everyone!
When: Day One, early morning
What: The King addresses his court
Where: City of Illusions, town center
Rating: Anywhere from G to R, I suppose
Status: Complete

In the beginning, everything was nothing. There was a void, black and endless. In one split second, that changed. Where there had been nothing but blackness, the vaguest shape of something began to take form. At first, it was impossible to tell what, since there was still very dark. Slowly, an area of the void began to lighten, and something could be seen to move through the dim light. Before there was more than light and dark, he was there shaping the world.

The King of the Goblins and former Ruler of the Underground looked around at what he had done, little though it appeared to be. He laughed, and it was the first sound ever heard in that place. The light continued to build, and he liked that and encouraged it. For many seconds, almost a full minute, he was very busy. He could feel others coming from the strange Planet that he had escaped. He must be ready... buildings sprung into existance, and grass, and a forest around the edge of the town. He was very guided by the place he'd been before, but also by the first Underground that had been destroyed.

Things were still shiny and new, almost not quite formed, when the first of them arrived. He supposed he'd dragged them along with him when he'd done battle with the Planet, but he wasn't worried. They wouldn't know what was going on. In the blink of an eye, they were there. Cathal, Gabrielle, Faith Lehane, Mercy Thompson, Giselle, Severus Snape, they all popped into being. The surge of energy this brought was incredible, and the lines of the city he had created, which had been hazy and indistinct, firmed into a more solid state.

Jareth searched, then, through all of the worlds that he could reach into with all his millenia of practice. Before a full ten seconds had passed since the arrival of the first ones, those from Mirage, more were brought to stand beside them. Cimorene, Helena Campbell, Hermione Granger, Jack Harkness, Jack Sparrow, Robin of Locksley, Rose Tyler, Schuldig, Steerpike, The Doctor, Willow Rosenberg and Yaten Kou. There was no rhyme or reason to his selections. He simply grabbed those who interested him and took them.

Before long at all, in fact, before even five minutes had passed since he had first walked the void, he had a decent sized group. He would bring more, but later. For now, he had a doubtless very confused court to attend to, and it wouldn't do to keep them waiting. With a gesture, he stood in the very center of the group so they tended to form a circle around him. With a slight twist of his mind, he made himself appear to sparkle, to seem taller than he was, to get their attention.

"Welcome to the Underground." His voice rang out clear and strong through the clearing in the center of the town. "I am the King of this place, and I've brought you here. Some of you will be familiar with this process, as it has been done once before. For some, this is the first time. You will be glad to know it will also be the last." Through some trick of his illusions, he appeared to be looking at each and every one of them, though of course, that should not be possible as they were all arrayed in a circle around him.

"This is your home now. You will not be leaving." He snapped, and in front of each person hung floating in the air two things, a key with a number clearly inscribed on it, and a book. "This is what I shall give you. A journal, which I shall leave to you to figure out, and a key, which is to the room you have been assigned." As he spoke, an orange/red sort of light began to fill the sky to the east. Soon, the sun broke from the horizon and began to rise, casting light on what had largely been in shadow before.

The buildings, each and every one of them, were hung about in gauzy fabrics of all colors. Tents and pavilions were in abundance throughout the area, and from somewhere not so far off, a horse could be heard to snort to itself. It was the City of Illusions in it's Ren Faire guise, which Jareth had seen while on Earth and which had struck his fancy. "This is your home." He repeated. "I have made this city for you to live in. There are only a few simple rules. You may not attempt to kill each other. You may not leave. You may not attempt to go into another's room uninvited. It's quite simple, really."

Jareth didn't pause, didn't give anyone a chance to speak, or even really think through what he had been saying. "For those of you that would not be satisfied with simply existing here in this city, there is a choice. Brave my labyrinth." He gestured toward a wall, high and thick and imposing. A large gate, easily wide enough to drive two buses through, hung open. "If you solve the labyrinth and get to my castle at the center of the structure, you will be rewarded." He paused for just a moment. "Perhaps even with your freedom." He didn't specify further than that.

"That is all. If you have any questions, any of my servants will assist you." He snapped once more, and a short, funny looking goblin scuried up. "Of course, you are welcome to ask me in person... but only if you solve my labyrinth first." As the last words came from his mouth, he was already fading from sight. Seconds later, he was completely gone, leaving those he had brought in a strange sunrise in a completely new world. The goblin, however, remained, looking at the group impassively.

Truth be told, Rose was in the mood to contradict everyone and every thing. Most specifically if it meant getting out of there. But since, according to Good King Jareth, whoever and whatever he was supposed to be, there was no getting out of there, it wouldn't do to waste the energy she'd need to figure out a way around this mess.

When the voice beside her spoke, she merely sighed. What else was she supposed to do, go and blow him up? Didn't really work when one didn't have a weapon with them. Besides which, unnecessary violence wasn't her way. Though if it came to it, and violence got her back home and back on her search, she'd go right ahead. "Maybe you're right," she shot back with a sardonic laugh. "Maybe I am insane. And it'd be about time, too." Rose shook her head and tucked her hair back behind her ears. The people around her looked horrified--well, some. A pair of dark haired girls looked completely at ease, and a redhead was smiling almost peacefully. And one--well. It was impossible. He could look like him all day long, but Jack was dead and the stranger, though pleasing on the eyes, couldn't be the friend she'd lost.

She hadn't, however, taken time to focus on the bloke beside her, though, and she took a moment to look him over. He probably appeared a bit intimidating to most, but really, he looked a bit like that git Jimmy used to hang around, and she found herself torn between wanting to find someone halfway normal in this place, and outright hating the man. "Suppose I'm not the only one with no intentions of staying here, then?"

"Hey," Cathal held up his hands and leaned back slightly, "I'm not the reason you're crazy. No reason to snap at me." He looked her over. She was attractive enough, he supposed, but her teeth were a little large and she wore strange clothing. She was no Clodagh, that was for sure. Only one had the same curly red hair, but even she wasn't the strong young woman he loved. He sighed and, though he didn't exactly turn his back on her, he might as well have. He turned to glance around. Though he continued to wear a stony expression, he was feeling very close to dispair. He had no idea where he was, no idea where Clodagh was, and no idea how he was going to get back to her. His one relief was that his father didn't seem to be in the immediate viscinity.

He only tilted his gaze toward her when she spoke again. "Oh what, and miss the chance to run the labyrinth? Surely you wouldn't give up that opportunity." He was being sarcastic again, but he had to agree with her. He had no intention of sticking around. He could tell she was looking him over. Resisting the urge to look down at himself he stared right back at her. He was wearing his long dark grey cloak over his loose pants and shirt. He had a sword belted at his waist and thick leather boots on his feet. He knew that his tattoos intimidated people, mostly just the people he fought, the people who were familiar with the meaning of his tattoos. But this girl couldn't know what they meant. Most likely, they were just strange looking to her. He glanced away, not wanting to see any judgement in her eyes.

"And just how do you plan to make your escape?"

"I didn't bloody say you were." But instead of snapping, as she'd really, really like to have, Rose only muttered the words. One would think she'd be used to this nonsense, being snatched to the wrong places without her knowing it. But dammit, it got harder every time. Especially alone. Being alone made it the worst. With the Doctor, she could always count on him to find some sort of solution. And at least if they didn't, they were together. Now, though? She'd never felt quite so alone.

One last glance at him kept the words 'is that a sword in your pocket or--' from falling off of her lips. He looked like a sort who'd just as easily take her head off with said sword. And he was obviously no happier to be there than she was. She should at least grasp on to that. If not everyone was going to be running around squealing in delight at being there, then maybe she'd make this work. "No idea," Rose replied, looking frantically around once again. But there was no sign of the device that had brought her, and no visible means of transportation. "But he can't keep a load of people here against his will. I don't do well with being kidnapped, personally, and I can't imagine anyone here could actually...like it. There's got to be a way out."

There had to be. These things just didn't happen with no cause.

Cathal had to smirk. He was riling her up without even really trying. Not only was it fun to see how far he could push someone's boundaries before they truly snapped, but his attitude was keeping her at bay. Safer for her in the end, really. After a moment of it, though, it wasn't fun anymore. He didn't really enjoy irritating people or being rude. But he had to do something to keep people from getting to know him, from finding out who he really was and keep them safe from his father. Anyone he cared about was in danger.

Though he wasn't watching her, his peripheral vision caught the frantic movements as she looked around for a way out. "I beg to differ with you, but I think he can keep anyone he wants here. My fa..." He trailed off and then continued again, in another direction. "I think there may be a way out, but I don't think it's right in front of you. You'll be going through that if you want out." He pointed to the Labyrinth and then glanced back down at her. "And good luck with that." She was defenseless, he could see that much. No sword, no aura about her that bespoke magic, nothing. He couldn't really imagine her getting through it alive and that didn't sit well with him. He might be a rude guy, but he wasn't cruel or heartless.

The sad part was, he probably wouldn't bother her one bit at any normal time. For God's sake, he looked like a sweet ball of fluff compared to a Dalek, after all. But she was tired, she was grumpy, and she was, in all fairness, confused. So in his defense, anyone would've pissed her off just then. It wasn't only him. Though if she knew he'd considered her defenseless, all bets were off. Just because she wasn't brandishing some fancy sword, didn't mean she was completely without skill.

"Maybe," Rose mused, looking towards the direction he'd pointed at. "And maybe that's just a trap in itself. Get you to go somewhere else, be involed with...other things." Flashes of memory shot through her mind: Satellite 5, the 'ghosts' across the world, even a seemingly normal dinner party. How many times had she been swayed to think something was one thing and it had turned into another? "And I beg to differ with you, but being held against my will be a little ugly creature doesn't go over well with me. There will be a way out, and if it's not through there? Then it's something else. And I'll find it." Eventually. Somehow. She once again wished the Doctor were with her, but for entirely different reasons than usual. Even her mum would be preferable to a load of strangers. She wondered if her parents would notice she was missing, or if there were two of her and one was back home. Somehow.

He had to admit, she had gumption. She was the determined sort, he could see that. And a tiny bit of him admired her for it. But he did nothing but lift a shoulder in a shrug. "Like I said, good luck." He smirked a bit and crossed his arms over his chest.

With his key in his hand, and the journal tucked in his belt, he watched her out of the corner of his eye. "Well, if you get a brilliant idea for getting out of here, let me know. I'll do what I can to help. Especially if it means getting back home." He didn't look at her as he spoke. He knew that his words would probably totally contradict what he'd been saying up until this point. He'd been rude and condescending, and now he was offering his help. He'd put her off enough to know that they probably would never be friends, but he didn't mind offering help if it meant getting out of this place and back to Clodagh.

Rose glanced at him warily out of the corner of her eye. It wasn't that she didn't want to like him. Hell, she didn't even know him, and she'd learned quickly over the years not to judge on appearances or even first impressions. But there was so much going on just then. It was hard to imagine befriending anyone in this strange new place. Though if the ugly little creature was telling the truth and they really were there to stay, she might want to consider it at some point.

Until then, though... She sighed, running a weary finger over the key. "Same goes for you. I've too much to be doing back home to be stuck here for no good reason." Her parents were probably worried already. And Tony...he'd grow up not knowing her. It would've caused her to cry if she didn't still feel so cold and numb. "I suppose we'll be seeing each other around, then. Not much choice, place small as this one." She wasn't sure if she was looking forward to it or not, but at least he hadn't attempted to kill her or anything. That was usually a plus when meeting someone for the first time.

He didn't know her name, but he didn't care to ask, either. Better he didn't know. She was in less danger that way. He sighed, wondering if his father was here, and how much power he had if he was. He didn't feel the pull, not the way he had in Sevenwaters. That, at least, was a relief.

He nodded. "Farewell, then." He bowed to her at the waist and then turned, drawing his hood up over his tattooed head. He moved away, his cloak billowing behind him as he walked.
