What: Time for pie!
Where: Kitchens
Rating: Uh. It's Faith. R for language.
Status: Complete

More people needed to get through the Labyrinth. Seriously. It was getting really old being alone over there, castle or not. So, despite the luxury she'd experienced on the other side of the Labyrinth, she tended to spend most of her time over in the City of Illusions side of things. There were just more people around, and Faith had gotten bored of sitting around doing nothing.

So she found herself wandering around aimlessly through the city. She went on the roller coaster a few more times, but that quickly lost its charm, and she left it behind quickly enough. It just wasn't as much fun as it had been when she'd dragged Snape with her. So she headed into the main building, which she actually hadn't checked out much. Maybe a bite to eat? That sounded good.

As she got close, however, she found herself smelling probably one of the best scents she'd ever smelled in her life. She smiled and followed her nose. Pushing open a door, she found a huge, well-stocked kitchen. "Hey, what's up?" She greeted the room at large, having not seen anyone who had made that delicious smell, but sure that they were there somewhere.

What she did see, however, was pie. Lots and lots of pie. Grinning, she approached the counter where they were all laid out. "Damn, these look fucking awesome!"

Ned hadn't been kidding when he said he really wasn't fond of amusement parks. And then Christmas on top of that? Less than pleasurable. He had to give Olive credit for making them at least tolerable for him, and he hated to admit he was growing fond of the pig. But waking up to another day surrounded by ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds and those blasted roller coasters left Ned a bit tense. And, when tense, Ned baked.

It wasn't quite unexpected, considering that's just what Ned did. That and he had received a stocking full of Christmas goodies from the creepy little goblin things. And, as it should have been, his was full of baking supplies. Anything he could've wanted was in that stocking, some items he'd taken years to build up for the shop. So it was only natural that he'd find himself buried back in that kitchen, baking away.

And bake he had. Five pies already decorated the front counter, cooling and waiting to be devoured. Though fair foods were pretty popular as far as feeding those with sweet tooths, so he wasn't really in need. But Ned's baking had never been about the necessity of others and more about filling his own desire to create. So when a rather crass voice called from around a corner, Ned froze. He'd been so lost in his world that he hadn't realized he wasn't alone.

"Um. Thanks?" he offered, only half paying attention as he poked his head out the kitchen door. A pretty but bold-looking woman stood, admiring the pies with a grin on her face. Fair enough, he was used to that expression. "Would you like some?" May as well, he wasn't about to eat them all.

Okay, so it made logical sense that someone would have had to be making the pies. But she hadn't seen anyone on first glance, and then the pies had her attention. So she was slightly startled when someone actually responded to her, and showed it, but only briefly. Quickly, she had her trademark smirk on her face, and she turned to face the man in her customary, overconfident, brash way.

"Hey, handsome." She tilted her head to the side, and then indicated the pies with a lazy finger. "These are yours, then? So, unless we have someone else with a fetish for pie making, you must be Ned, yeah?" And some people thought Faith didn't pay attention to anything.

"Okay, so like, what flavors are these?" Some of them had crusts on the top, after all. Not that it really mattered to her. She'd never met a pie she didn't like. She turned away from the man and toward the pastries, turning her mind to the important task of which one she should have a piece of.

"Shit, yeah! I'd love a piece! I was all fucked up cause I couldn't get any cause I was doing the maze thing. I'm so in for pie."

Handsome? Even Olive wasn't quite as...upfront as this girl was. And Ned was relatively certain she called everyone that, as he'd never really deemed himself as such and Chuck was the only one who'd ever actually called him that. And never quite so...teasingly.

"I am, yeah," he confirmed, looking at her curiously. "You must be...Faith?" he asked, searching his brain for the name of the girl who'd done the labyrinth and had been neglected from pies. Despite her language, he found himself hoping to keep her happy.

Actually, no. Maybe it was because of her language. She seemed like she could knock him out without batting an eye.

Turning back to the kitchens, he found a plate and a pie server. "Let's see...double fudge with banana graham cracker crust, mixed tropical fruits, lemon meringue, cookies n'cream with a honey butter crust, and... Well, I don't really know what that one is," he said, pointing to the fifth pie with a puzzled look. "Something native to the area, maybe? Or not from Earth, I don't know." For all Ned knew, Faith wasn't from Earth, though she talked like someone who was. "I've seen plenty of the...err, locals eating them and tried one. They're sweet, feel free to try it."

Grinning, the dark-haired Slayer leaned against the counter, watching Ned as he moved around the place. He really seemed at home in the kitchen, which made sense, given that he seemed to spend a lot of time there. She was sort of impressed, really. She could start a fire by trying to boil water, and had something almost close to respect for anyone that could cook or bake.

"Got it in one, Pieman!" It wasn't much of a nickname, but then, Faith's nicknames for people usually didn't even make a lot of sense. At least his fit him. Snape got Skeletor, which really, he didn't even resemble particularly. "That's me, Faith. How the hell are ya?"

As he brought the plate over, she surveyed the options. But, in the end, there was no contest. She wasn't the sort to go for the familiar, and mystery pie sounded pretty much perfect to her. So she pointed to the one that Ned didn't know what to call.

"That one." She smiled at him, and wondered if he seemed slightly nervous. Oh, well. She was used to that reaction from some guys, and some girls, too. It wasn't all that unusual.

If Ned did seem nervous to faith, that was probably because he was. Not intentionally. He was anxious around most everyone, particularly women, and most especially women who could likely knock him to the ground with one well aimed punch.

But his pies were one thing he had real confidence in, and he spooned out a piece of the curious treat, its bright pink color looking rather fantastic against the pale vanilla crust he'd chosen for it. "I'm fine," he replied, though the answer probably came out a bit more of a question than a statement. Who asked that way? No one he knew.

Pulling himself up on the edge of the counter, he looked down as the young woman took her first bite of the dessert. "I honestly haven't tried it in a pie yet. You're technically my guinea pig."

Faith rolled her eyes, but grinned. This guy seemed strictly squaresville, but nice enough, despite that. Still, that didn't mean she wasn't going to have some fun with him. She basically couldn't help it. Anytime she saw someone acting in any way restrained, it was like a personal challenge to try and get them to loosen up.

"I'm fine..." She said in exactly the same tone of voice he had used, and then reached over and gently punched him in the shoulder. Well, gently for her, which meant it wouldn't leave bruises. "You need to lighten up, find the fun, Ned."

Lecture over, she accepted the pie. She couldn't deny that she was a little concerned about how this was going to turn out, an alien fruit and all. Giles would just about be having kittens at the very idea that she would eat this. But it wasn't in her to not try, so she forked up a big bite and stuck it into her mouth without hesitation.

Immediately, her eyes lit up, and she gave him a thumbs up. "Guinea pig says this is fucking awesome!"

Almost absently, Ned rubbed his shoulder as she took her first bite of the pie. After all, he wasn't exactly a physical sort. Or, well, at all. Seeing as he rarely even took someone's hand, being punched even playfully would likely leave a dent for a day or two.

Still, he couldn't help a slight laugh as her eyes lit up and she responded enthusiastically. "Glad you like it," he told her, grinning down at her. He was proud of himself for trying something so new. Chuck would've been proud, too, but that was a thought he had to push aside for the moment. "Now, as long as you don't die from it, we ought to be okay." And if she did... He should really make sure the only other creatures around were Jareth's annoying goblins.

He didn't want to comment on finding the fun. Ned didn't deal well with fun. He and fun were opposites. But his eyebrows lifted just the same and he shrugged. "Dunno about finding the fun in a wacky misplaced alien world, have to tell you. Would rather be home trying to find the fun there."

Faith had no idea the punch had stung a bit. After all, she fought all the time. It wouldn't occur to her that other people might be a bit easier to hurt than she was. Also, she healed faster, and tended to forget about little details like how most humans didn't. So she just smiled at him and continued eating the pie.

"Best. Motherfucking. Pie. Ever." Faith didn't exactly watch her language, and that was becoming more obvious the longer she was around. Swearing was basically her native language. She was rarely aware of it, except for when she played it up on purpose because she sensed it caught people off guard. Right now, though, she was just sincerely loving the pie.

Soon, the plate was cleared, and she was eying the other pies. Chocolate with banana graham crust? Did she have room? She leaned casually against the counter once more, turning her dark-eyed gaze back to Ned. "Shit, home ain't so great. Don't see why you'd wanna go back. Here, all you gotta do is run through a tiny little maze, and BAM!" She snapped her fingers. "You're on easy street."

She seemed so at ease with herself. It was something Ned was relatively sure he'd never understand or be able to duplicate. Not only her free flowing mouth, but her casual nature and her apparent confidence. Must have been nice.

"Home is where my girlfriend is," he admitted, avoiding her eyes for a moment. It was getting easier to think about Chuck these days, especially when people were being reunited all around him. After all, if Olive had made her way here, why couldn't she? "And my business. It's stable there, not... Not things changing every single day the way they do here." At home, he didn't wake up one day with it bright and sunny and the next day find Christmas out his front door.

"Besides," he added with a slight chuckle, "I think what you consider a tiny little maze might not be tiny to others. Werewolves? Not my thing."

Faith decided that she did definitely have room for another piece of pie, and raised an eyebrow as she indicated the chocolate, asking wordlessly if she could have a piece. Assuming it was fine, she cut a rather large slice, dumped it on her plate, and dug in.

"Dude. Girlfriend? You left your chica behind? That sucks, man." She stopped to eat some pie, which was just as good, if not better, than the one she'd had before. Damn, but this man could bake. Finally, she chewed and swallowed. "I left this guy back home, Robin? I guess he and I had a thing, you know? But it's no big." Although, it could have been. The principal had almost broken through some of her barriers. So it wasn't like he was her boyfriend exactly, just a boy. That liked her. She sighed softly, and forked up another bite of pie.

"Enough with the lame ass depressing talk, for serious. Shit, yeah, the Labyrinth. I dunno how most people are gonna deal with vamps and werewolves. That coulda been pretty insane, if I wasn't, you know." She shrugged and popped the pie into her mouth.

Ned couldn't help smiling as she took a piece of the chocolate pie as well. Of course she was welcome to it, it wasn't like there was a line or anything. Maybe eventually he really would start making pies for the general public instead of just whoever happened to wander in. Just...not yet.

Sucks was hardly the word Ned would use for leaving his childhood sweetheart back home. If he were completely convinced this was all a dream, it probably wouldn't bother him quite so much. But from talking to Sarah and knowing how many details he was seeing were...well, detailed, he had to wonder. And it made him nearly sick thinking that unless this king let him go, he might not ever see Chuck again. "It's pretty big for me," he commented quietly, but let her move on. After all, all talking about it did was make it hurt more.

"If you weren't...you know, what? I don't know, actually." He was learning bits and pieces about the people here, but he was still having trouble grasping it. After all, until his arrival in this city, he'd thought his own skill was rather impressive if not a bit freaky. And now he was meeting vampires and dragon princesses and everything.

It didn't take her long to finish that slice of pie, and it was just as amazing as the other one had been. "Dude. Are you, like, some baker or some shit? You know, professionally? You kick ass." She set her plate down on the counter, decided she was too full to get another piece, no matter how good the other pies looked. Maybe later. Assuming other people didn't get to them first. "Man, if I ever throw a party, you gotta do the grub, you know?"

Once her pie was done, she boosted herself up onto the counter, away from the pies, and swung her legs idly as she talked. Obviously, she wasn't done talking to Ned yet, and was making herself comfortable for the long haul. She looked at him for awhile, sort of blankly, and then smiled suddenly. "Yeah, I dig that."

Her feet set up a regular pattern on the counter as she kicked her legs and looked at him. "Well, it doesn't seem fair, you know? Cause, like, I'm the Slayer, and Mercy's one of those coyote things, and we did alright, but man, like, a normal person? Uncool." Although she didn't so much think that Jareth cared much about being fair, somehow. "Maybe I should go through with people, dust more vamps..."

"I wouldn't trust me with your catering," Ned commented, smiling despite himself. "All I can do is pie. I do it professionally, run my own bakery and everything. The Pie Hole. But other foods?" Shaking his head, he laughed slightly. "Nah, I'm a macaroni and cheese sort."

Considering her words, Ned had to take a minute to think. Only a few days ago, he'd have looked at her as if she'd grown a new head right in front of him for even suggesting there were such things as 'vamps' and vampire slayers. Not to mention the part-coyote girl. But he'd been in this place long enough to grasp the idea. Sort of. As it was, he just looked at her as if she'd lost her head instead of growing one. "I wonder if the labyrinth is the same for everyone who goes through it," he questioned out loud, as much to himself as to her. "Sarah said when she went through it years ago, it was nothing like that. But she's just a regular human, too. Maybe he changes it based on your abilities."

"Alright! Pie party!" Far from being distressed by his professed lack of catering skill, she seemed pleased. Hey, as far as she was concerned, it could be much worse than having a party with nothing to eat but pie. Especially pies like these. "You can bring some KD too, I don't mind." Faith had eaten her fair share of Kraft Dinner in her life, so it wouldn't bother her in the slightest to have it served at a party.

"But, nah, don't worry. I don't plan parties, I just go to them. Planning is strictly dullsville." She stilled her legs, drawing them up on the counter so that she was sitting cross-legged.

Faith was used to people giving her strange looks, though, of course, she noticed it. She grinned back at him, not overly concerned, and gave a half shrug. "I know it's gotta be pretty looped out for you to hear all this junk, but for real, you wouldn't wanna arm wrestle me." She considered what he said, then shrugged. "No idea. But, like, there was shit from both Mercy's world and mine, so, who the shit knows?"

Aside from her foul mouth, Ned found the young woman relatively easy to talk to. Which was kind of a surprise, considering he didn't talk to much of anyone. Maybe it was her brash nature or the fact that she didn't seem to care one way or the other what he thought about her answers. She just kept talking, and that was easy to answer.

He swung his legs lightly, amused that he'd been sitting so still while Faith couldn't seem to settle. Of course, she seemed like an endless ball of energy anyway. "You knew her before you started that thing, didn't you? On this Mirage people have talked about? Was it different from here? I mean, how do people who spend time together get stuck here and then random people who've never, no offense, heard of any of you get pulled in, too? It just..." Sighing, Ned shrugged. It was something he'd thought of over and over again but still had no answer to. If this wasn't a dream, and several days later he had to admit the possibility was slim, then what was this place? "I just don't get it, I guess."

Faith grinned at him, squirming around slightly and then sitting down once she was comfortable. She looked at him for awhile, and then reached over her side to snag another piece of pie. It looked precarious at best, perched on the counter like she was, but she managed to transfer the piece from the pie tray to the plate deftly enough.

"Yeah, we knew each other." She laughed softly. The two girls had gotten up to some stuff on Mirage, definitely. "But this place is better. Nothing to fight on Mirage, you know? Lame." She thought about that a bit as she thoughtfully munched on pie. "It was sorta the same. Things changed a lot, and like, you know, it was a bunch of random people and shit. Hard to explain." She shrugged. "But still better than Sunny D."

Getting her to talk about herself was good for Ned for two reasons. One being that he was, by that point, a detective in all ways that counted. He knew how to ask questions and how to find holes in stories. And doing that meant talking to people.

The other had quite a bit to do with the fact that if she was talking, he wasn't. And Ned really had no urge to talk about himself.

"Not that hard to explain, I wouldn't think," he replied with a shrug. He couldn't help grin as she went for a third slice of pie. Maybe he really could work up some sort of following while he was here. "If it changes a lot and contains random people... Well, then it's not too different from here then, is it?" He chewed on his lower lip, thinking. "Sunny D? Like the beverage?" Orange juice was a bit...bright for his taste. Apple was the more muted variety, and therefore, much more Ned.

The pie slice disappeared, though a bit slower than the previous two. She was certainly getting full. But the pie was pretty much the most delicious she'd ever tasted. Still, she had to figure she was done, for now. Probably. "Damn, that's good. I mean, seriously tastiness going on there."

She hopped down, having way too much energy to sit around on top of the counter. Hey, she was on a pretty major sugar rush at this point. Which was a bad thing, really. When she got this sugared up, usually she wanted to get into a fight.

"Uh, yeah, I guess. But there wasn't a Sparkly King, you know?" She shrugged and then brushed the whole subject off. She wasn't on Mirage anymore, after all, which was fine, really. "Nah, man, Sunny D. Good old Sunnydale, where I'm from, in Cali."

Ned was pleased to see he had a new fan. Who wouldn't want that kind of appreciation? Who was he to argue if someone willingly ate and liked his pies? Sure, money wasn't needed on this planet, but gratitude was always welcome. Even if the sweets were described as 'seriously tastiness'.

Besides. Watching the girl move around and listening to her brash talk? Ned was pretty pleased she enjoyed his pie. He had the feeling he didn't want to be on her bad side.

"California?" he questioned. At least it was a place he'd heard of. And in the United States, no less. Not some foreign country or distant land or outer space. Practically down the street if he thought about it in comparison. "Is it really sunny all the time, there? Are vampires...common, in your area?" Ned had never heard of vampires existing in the real world before this, but maybe in other parts of the world they were known vividly.

Full of sugar, Faith stretched her arms far above her head, unable to stand still. Faith on an obvious sugar high was a scary thing, because even though she was really remarkably tiny, she seemed to radiate dangerous energy at the best of times. It was part of what made her so compelling.

"Yeah, for real. Not the home town, you know, but whatever." She shrugged, and then let her arms fall down to her side once more, apparently sufficiently stretched out.

"Dude, come on. It's Cali. It's sunny." The Slayer tilted her heaed to the side, and then laughed. "Hells yeah. Reason I ended up in the Dale, cause of the Hellmouth. Good place to slay. So shit, tons of vamps to dust. I was so totally there."

"The Hellmouth?" Ned blurted, unable to stop himself. Magic finger be damned, was this girl for real? But even as he thought it, he knew there was truth in every word Faith said. Why not? Everyone else around there seemed to be a bit mad, talking about things he found strange. She may as well, too.

Wincing a bit, he pulled himself down from the counter. Strange arrivals could only lead to one thing: more pie. Baking was Ned's stress relief, and he was, by anyone's definition, stressed. Besides, if he hadn't been meant to bake, he wouldn't have been given all of the supplies from the crazy little goblins, would he?

"So, what exactly does that...entail? A Hellmouth, I mean? Vampires? Just...running rampant?" A shudder went down his spine, but Ned focused on putting the dry ingredients for a crust into a mixing bowl. He didn't even think about it anymore. It could've been any flavor for all he knew, though instinctively he knew he'd started something with a hint of lime.

"Yup." She looked at him, her mouth quirking up into a smile. She'd never liked the whole being quiet about her powers part of being a Slayer, and it was nice to not have to do that here. She could just tell the truth, and that was a nice thing to be able to do. At least, sometimes. Not that she was opposed to a little lying now and then.

"Hellmouth. Big baddies all over. Wicked place, just don't take a vacation there. Might end up sacrificed to a demon or some shit." She watched him curiously as he jumped down off the counter. Her eyes lit up as she saw him start to mix things together. "At this rate, I'm gonna be in this damn kitchen all the time!"

She walked over to the wall nearest to him and leaned against it, and if pressed, she would admit she was enjoying this conversation, and his company. He was so normal seeming, but he wasn't running from her. People tended to be a bit scared of her. "Yeah, you know, every night, vamps. Pretty tripped out."

He wasn't opposed to someone being in the kitchen all the time. It was nice to be appreciated. By someone other than Olive, that was. Or even Sarah, as nice as she was. Sometimes he thought she just humored him.

"Not looking forward to being sacrificed, thanks," he confirmed, glancing over his shoulder at her before turning back to the bowl. It was nice to work with ingredients that had been alive when he'd started working with them. Not having to use the baking to make an actual living made it even more comfortable.

Ned would've laughed if she'd called him normal out loud. Even without the power of 'the magic finger' as Emerson had dubbed it, Ned had never felt normal. Maybe it was losing his mother so young, maybe it was his father's stand-offish behavior, or maybe it was growing up with the finger. But Ned had always felt awkward around most people. Including Faith. She was really just lucky she'd come across him in a kitchen setting. It was his haven, really, and he was comfortable there.

"A lot of people probably die there, don't they?" he asked, trying not to focus on a pretty and clearly powerful woman being near him. Instead, he focused on the strawberries he found in the refrigerator. "Sounds...like a pleasant little town. Why does anyone stay?"

"Yeah, funny, isn't my fave thing to do for a fun weekend, either." She smirked a little, pacing the kitchen restlessly. "Seen a lot of crazy shit, though, I'm telling you." She tilted her head to the side, watching him work. "Kinda why I don't mind being here, you know? Less people try to make me die here." At least so far. Though there had been the things in the Labyrinth, but they'd been easy enough.

"Shit, course they do. Funerals are sort of, you know, normal. Like, oh, who died this week, kinda thing." She shrugged. "There's vamps all over, but tons over the Hellmouth. But we dealt with that shit, we blew the fucker up." She grinned. Spike had been really amazing there, even she had to admit that.

"So, what about your world? Any fucked up shit? Or are you just from Squaresville, Idaho?" She turned to look at him, and though the words and tone were somewhat breezy, her eyes were genuinely curious about him.

"I'm from the northwest," he said simply, glancing at her with a flicker of a smile. "I'm not sure you'd say it's...fucked up, exactly." Ned stammered over the words. Not that he never swore, but rarely around strangers. Chuck's gasp of surprise the first time she'd heard him use the word 'damn' proved that. "Lakeshore has its share of crime. Just not the supernatural creature kind."

Biting his lip, he wondered how much was safe to say. Faith obviously had powers of her own if she fought vampires and werewolves and thought little of it. But no one knew of his own little 'trick', outside of Chuck and Emerson. Even Olive didn't know. And telling one wrong person might get back to Olive. And then what happened if and when they returned home? Would she remember? And would she hold it against him if she did?

"I uh... Do a bit of my own crime fighting," he finally admitted with the slightest of smirks. "Nothing fancy like...dusting vamps," he offered, using her own words. "More like a private investigator sort. My friend Olive, she's here with me, she runs the shop while I'm out looking into cases. According to her, though, she's started taking on more of the investigating, too." That was still weird, this brain lapse he apparently had. Not remembering an entire year that Olive consistently reminded him of.

"Yeah?" She arched an eyebrow at him as he spoke, and actually listened with something resembling courtesy. It wasn't, after all, that she couldn't do so, just that she rarely actually did. "Sounds wicked, all Sherlock-y and shit. Pretty sweet."

"I used to think I could be a sweet P.I, you know." Apparently, listening time was over. "Cause of how I can see more stuff than normal people and stuff, you know? But, uh, well." She shrugged. "Kinda got put in jail, most people don't wanna hire you if you got a ticket to the slammer." Especially since she'd technically broken out of the place at the very end, and not been released.

"But, yeah, guess I'm stuck with the Slayer gig. Not so bad, you know, cause we're not even allowed to kill the vamps that are here, right? So it's kinda slow." She grinned at him. "S'why I'm here eating your pie. No vamps I'm allowed to dust."

Ned paused occasionally from his baking to listen to her story. It was fine with him if listening time stayed over. He hated talking. Especially to strangers. People who didn't know him but expected him to tell his life story? Not his speed. No, as far as he was concerned he could let her talk all she wanted. Besides, some of the things pouring out of her mouth were priceless.

"Well, there's plenty where this came from," he informed her, smiling as he added one last scoop of whipping cream. "It's all I do, after all. My whole life, see? So... Yeah. Anytime you want pie? It's here. Spread the word, too, God knows I can't eat it all." As he never had eaten a lot of his own pie before, this certainly wouldn't be anything new. "So you're welcome anytime."

Faith found herself smiling at him. People so rarely actually listened to her, and if he wasn't doing so, well, he was doing a good enough job of pretending for her. And, anyway, he was offering pie. That couldn't be a bad thing.

Still, she was fairly sugared up at this point, and thought a trip to the gym wouldn't be an entirely bad thing. So she nodded at him. "Shit, yeah, I'll totally be back for pie. And for you, too, handsome." She grinned and even winked at him, then spun on her heel.

"Anyway, I'm gonna blow. Catch ya on the flip side, man. Nice to meet you! Later!" With a wave over her shoulder, she headed for the door. It had been nice meeting him, somewhat to her surprise. She would definitely be back for more pie.
