Day 9 Arrival
WHO: Der Tod & Armand
WHEN: Day 9 Predawn
WHAT: Der Tod does not approve of this strange place
WHERE: On the empty streets of the City
RATING: PG-13 to be safe
STATUS: Complete

It made no sense. Finally, finally she wanted to die. Asked him to take her even. And he'd refused. Why, how could she keep resisting him? Everything he'd done had been to show her how much better off she'd be with him, and it still hadn't worked! Foolish, blind, stubborn, infuriating woman.

He loved her all the more for it.

So he couldn't take her, not until she returned his love. Instead he pushed her away, and stalked off, leaving the Empress to sob on the floor of her son's tomb. He couldn't help smirking a bit at the irony of that. Rudolf had been such a useful tool, so earnest and trusting.

Der Tod closed his eyes briefly to make the mental twist that would transfer him back to the lands of the dead. When he opened them again, instead of his mist and shadow cloaked realm, he was in a strange alleyway that looked out on a strange fair-type place. He held perfectly still for a long moment, taking the measure of his surroundings. This was not the lands of the dead, and more worrisome, he couldn't sense his realm. He made the mental twist again, but found himself still standing in the same place. A low hiss of annoyance escaped unbidden from his lips. Something was very, very wrong here.

Four long strides took him out of the alley and onto a wider street. It was still dark wherever he was, but predawn dark, not night dark. Not exactly a time when many humans were out, but he could sense them nearby, mostly sleeping. There were several odd presences that piqued his interest, however there were significantly fewer people than he would have expected from the apparent size of this place. His lip curled back in a snarl as he looked around. This place was almost sickeningly alive.

He could feel someone approaching, so he schooled his expression into one of more innocent confusion, and started heading towards the person. 'Accidentally' running into someone would be the easiest way to figure out what was going on after all.

The ease with which the other man followed him was the first real indication he'd had that this being was what he said he was. Yes, there had been that odd, twisting feeling inside him when Der Tod had kissed him, and that certainty that he'd tried to kill him. But that could have been imagination. No mortal could have done that, and Armand looked at Der Tod in open, child-like wonder as he appeared beside him.

"Incredible..." He murmured, and then smiled. "You are what you say you are. I don't know whether to laugh or cry." Because what sort of power did Jareth have, if he could even bring Death here?

"And now, we go inside." Politely, Armand opened the door, gestured for Der Tod to go in. "There should be a desk nearby, with a goblin behind it. You get your key, and it will have your room number on it."

Der Tod raised an eyebrow at Armand's comment. "I do not lie." He said. Stretch or omit the truth yes. Redirect the question or change the subject yes. But he did not, as a general rule lie outright. And he had no reason to hide who -what- he was here.

He gave a slight, soft laugh at Armand holding the door for him, but he nodded a polite thank you. There was indeed a strange little creature behind a desk. As he approached, the creature pulled out two items and placed them on the counter, indicating that Der Tod should take them. The first was a key, and as Armand had indicated there was a room number etched on it. He pocketed the key and turned his attention to the other item, a small book bound in black leather.

"And this is?" he asked. Sure he could figure it out himself, but it was so amusing to watch Armand fall over himself trying to prove how useful and helpful he was.

Armand shrugged a little. "I do, and I'm surrounded by others who do as well. In that situation, you learn to think everyone is a liar. Or, at least, to be healthily skeptical about everything said to you." He pursed his lips thoughtfully. "It's just easier that way."

Armand watched from the doorway, leaning against the frame casually. Der Tod didn't seem particularly surprised by the goblins. Of course, he'd probably seen some pretty strange things in his day. The vampire just watched as the goblin gave the key and the book, but his eyes lit up when he saw the journal. He'd forgotten to mention that, in all the excitement.

"That's your journal. Whatever you write can be seen by everyone else who lives here. Very useful for communicating, and just for writing whatever comes into your mind, anything at all." He thought for a moment. "I believe I also heard that you can make it private, or so that only certain people can see it." Although why anyone would want to, he didn't know. He was all about just writing whatever came to mind, and not caring much who saw it.

"I do not lie" Der Tod repeated, though he kept his tone friendly, comforting even. Get this man to trust him, then he could start working it to make sure he was the only one Armand thought he could trust. It had worked before after all.

He turned the book over and over in his hand, and fluttered the pages. Indeed there was writing on the first few. It wasn't something he had any plans of using however, though it might be a good way to keep tabs on the people here. That made it worth keeping. He dropped it into his pocket and crossed back over to Armand.

"You mentioned a room, I believe?" he asked, with a gracious smile. "I would be obliged if you might lead me there." There was the faintest thread of sarcasm in the last.

Armand smiled slightly. "Then you are a very, very rare being, indeed. I would have been willing to bet that everyone does." He shrugged, willing to believe him. After all, he didn't feel any lie in his mind. The vampire looked thoughtfully at Der Tod as he came closer once more.

He gazed at the other man for awhile, and then suddenly smiled. He wasn't completely sure if he trusted, or even liked, Der Tod, but he sort of thought he was leaning toward that. Either that, or he hated him. He'd figure it out. Here, it didn't much matter. What could he do about it, either way?

"Yes, of course. What number is engraved on the top of the key?"

Der Tod pulled the key out of his pocket, running his thumb over the engraved number. "Ah, F 211 it appears." He gave Armand a slight smile. "I would say I am unique rather than merely rare," He spread his arms, his smile taking on a slightly predatory edge. "I doubt you'll find anyone else who can claim to be Death."

He repocketed the key and gestured for Armand to proceed him out of the building. "Please, lead on."

Armand's eyes widened, and he turned to Der Tod with an amused look on his innocent seeming young face. "Oh, but unique as you may be, I have known many who claimed to be Death." He went outside, and then raised his arms to the sky. "Lestat is Death, and Gabrielle, and Marius... all of us Dark Gods to those we slay."

He thought about that for awhile, and then smiled. "But I am not Death. I am Death's Angel." He turned, located F building, and headed toward it. In the blink of an eye, moving with his super speed, he was there.

Der Tod inclined his head slightly, conceding Armand's point. "Indeed. There are many who might claim to be Death, but one who kills is not Death, he is just..." An ironic smile "another human. Anyone can kill."

He had to smile slightly at the other man's assertion that he was 'Death's Angel', but he said nothing until they had both arrived at the F building. Again, he stepped closer and gently ran a hand across Armand's cheek. "An angel of Death must know death" he said, slightly amused, but also with a vague hint of wistfulness. This strange man could probably make a very good black angel one day. "And you seem so adverse to that idea."

Once more, Armand gazed at Der Tod with wonder in his face. Yes, there was wariness, but then, the man had tried to kill him with a kiss. But he was also just drawn to power, and there was no doubt that this being had it, even if he didn't have all of it here, and probably wouldn't have even back on earth.

His gaze turned thoughtful. "But I know Death. I am dead." He pressed a hand against his silent heart, which didn't beat now because he hadn't fed yet. "When Marius took me, I was dying of poison. He finished the job. I am dead, there is no breath in my lungs, except for what I need to speak. Not once, but twice, I died. Once to poison, and to my Master's fangs, and then to the fire of the sun. I walk, and I talk, and I feed, but I am as dead as any in your realm."

"Your flesh is dead" Der Tod said, almost conversationally, as if he discussed such things daily. His hand slid down to tap gently above Armand's unbeating heart. "Your heart may not beat, you may not need to breath, but your spirit is caught. Not alive, not dead." He stepped back a half step and spread his arms. "I care little for the disposition of the flesh."

He turned slightly, and pulled open the dorm door. "You are not yet truly dead." he said, with unwavering confidence. "Or you would be in my realm and we wouldn't be having this fascinating conversation. "

"No, but you don't understand! I am dead." He raised his hand for inspection, all the sun damage long gone, at this point, so his skin was pure white, like marble. He then placed that hand gently on top of Der Tod's. "I did die, though. Although I walk and talk, I died, just as all vampires do. Although I am not in your realm, that's only because of the trickery of the demon spirit that lives in me."

Armand let him go as he stepped back, and looked at him, no mockery in his expression. "But if I do not qualify as dead, well, then, who better to be Death's Angel? I have died, and yet, I walk among the living. I bring death with my ravenous bite." He walked into the door that was pulled open, and waited for Der Tod to follow. "A vampire is uniquely suited to the job, if you think on it."

Der Tod laughed. A full, deep chested laugh that lasted for a good long while. This man - no, more of a boy, despite the years he claimed to have lived - thought he knew what was and was not death? The irony, the arrogance of it all was just so painfully amusing.
"I think you forget to whom you speak" he said when he'd finally finished laughing. It was not entirely a mocking comment, but there was a edge of warning to his voice as well. He followed Armand into the building, an amused smile still playing on his face.
"Your... abilities are significant, I'm sure. But anyone can bring death. To truly bring someone into the lands of the dead... That is something different."

Armand got enough of what Der Tod was saying that it made his eyes flash with anger, and his body tense with injured pride. He lifted his chin proudly, and shot the man a look that showed just how unimpressed he was. But then, moments later, he was looking at him plaintively. He was very changeable.

"I don't forget." He sighed and turned away, not all the way around, just off to the side. "And I don't understand the words you say. I simply do not."

Der Tod watched Armand's flash of pride and stifled another laugh. The boy really didn't understand. Then again, could he really be expected to? The smile Der Tod favored Armand with this time was almost affectionate, though it edged towards being a bit patronizing. "No, I suppose you don't," he said softly "But it is no matter. I believe we were headed to my room?" The double meaning did not escape him as he gestured for Armand to lead the way again.

The vampire cast a look at the other man, but just sighed once more, and shook his head sadly. He still didn't get it. He was dead. He knew both worlds. But maybe there was something here he just couldn't understand, this wasn't impossible, though it infuriated him a little.

"I do not." But he was easily distracted, and glanced around. "Your room is this way. Come, I will show you." The double meaning didn't escape him, but he more or less decided to act like it had. He wasn't nearly as innocent as he looked, but wondered if Der Tod would be taken in by his seeming innocence.

Der Tod inclined his head slightly, letting Armand proceed him. He doubted the vampire understood anything he'd tried to explain, but that was hardly unusual. Or particularly troubling.

More amusing was how the boy seemed to have completely missed the subtext of the comment. Der Tod followed him into the building and upstairs to F 211. "This is it?" he asked, once again pulling out the key he'd been given. He slipped it into the lock, but didn't turn it before making a twist of power, just to see. The door remained stubbornly, infuriatingly locked. He snarled quietly and turned the key. The door opened onto one of the most mundane and uninspiring rooms he'd ever seen. Which, considering, was saying something.

"This King certainly keeps us in the lap of luxury" he commented, dripping sarcasm.

Armand walked, keeping himself fairly quiet, for once. He was deep in thought. Those were the moods he tended to be, either talking nonstop, or being absolutely silent as he figured things out. When he got to the right room number, he turned to face Der Tod, smiled at him.

"Here." He laughed softly at the other man's words. "I hear that on the other side of the Labyrinth, things are much better. Here... ugh." He glanced with distaste at the room, which was the same as his, as far as he could tell.

"Is there anything else you would know? The sun will rise soon, and I must be safely in the dark before then."

Der Tod wasn't really listening to Armand. He was seething again, furious that this so-called 'King' dared think such... mediocre accommodations were in any way suitable. This king would pay for this eventually.

"Go, go" he said, with a dismissive wave of his hand to Armand. He wasn't trying to be rude, but there were far more important things to worry about right now. "Thank you" he said as a rather insincere afterthought.
