Day 9 Arrival
WHO: Der Tod & Armand
WHEN: Day 9 Predawn
WHAT: Der Tod does not approve of this strange place
WHERE: On the empty streets of the City
RATING: PG-13 to be safe
STATUS: Complete

It made no sense. Finally, finally she wanted to die. Asked him to take her even. And he'd refused. Why, how could she keep resisting him? Everything he'd done had been to show her how much better off she'd be with him, and it still hadn't worked! Foolish, blind, stubborn, infuriating woman.

He loved her all the more for it.

So he couldn't take her, not until she returned his love. Instead he pushed her away, and stalked off, leaving the Empress to sob on the floor of her son's tomb. He couldn't help smirking a bit at the irony of that. Rudolf had been such a useful tool, so earnest and trusting.

Der Tod closed his eyes briefly to make the mental twist that would transfer him back to the lands of the dead. When he opened them again, instead of his mist and shadow cloaked realm, he was in a strange alleyway that looked out on a strange fair-type place. He held perfectly still for a long moment, taking the measure of his surroundings. This was not the lands of the dead, and more worrisome, he couldn't sense his realm. He made the mental twist again, but found himself still standing in the same place. A low hiss of annoyance escaped unbidden from his lips. Something was very, very wrong here.

Four long strides took him out of the alley and onto a wider street. It was still dark wherever he was, but predawn dark, not night dark. Not exactly a time when many humans were out, but he could sense them nearby, mostly sleeping. There were several odd presences that piqued his interest, however there were significantly fewer people than he would have expected from the apparent size of this place. His lip curled back in a snarl as he looked around. This place was almost sickeningly alive.

He could feel someone approaching, so he schooled his expression into one of more innocent confusion, and started heading towards the person. 'Accidentally' running into someone would be the easiest way to figure out what was going on after all.

Armand got enough of what Der Tod was saying that it made his eyes flash with anger, and his body tense with injured pride. He lifted his chin proudly, and shot the man a look that showed just how unimpressed he was. But then, moments later, he was looking at him plaintively. He was very changeable.

"I don't forget." He sighed and turned away, not all the way around, just off to the side. "And I don't understand the words you say. I simply do not."

Der Tod watched Armand's flash of pride and stifled another laugh. The boy really didn't understand. Then again, could he really be expected to? The smile Der Tod favored Armand with this time was almost affectionate, though it edged towards being a bit patronizing. "No, I suppose you don't," he said softly "But it is no matter. I believe we were headed to my room?" The double meaning did not escape him as he gestured for Armand to lead the way again.

The vampire cast a look at the other man, but just sighed once more, and shook his head sadly. He still didn't get it. He was dead. He knew both worlds. But maybe there was something here he just couldn't understand, this wasn't impossible, though it infuriated him a little.

"I do not." But he was easily distracted, and glanced around. "Your room is this way. Come, I will show you." The double meaning didn't escape him, but he more or less decided to act like it had. He wasn't nearly as innocent as he looked, but wondered if Der Tod would be taken in by his seeming innocence.

Der Tod inclined his head slightly, letting Armand proceed him. He doubted the vampire understood anything he'd tried to explain, but that was hardly unusual. Or particularly troubling.

More amusing was how the boy seemed to have completely missed the subtext of the comment. Der Tod followed him into the building and upstairs to F 211. "This is it?" he asked, once again pulling out the key he'd been given. He slipped it into the lock, but didn't turn it before making a twist of power, just to see. The door remained stubbornly, infuriatingly locked. He snarled quietly and turned the key. The door opened onto one of the most mundane and uninspiring rooms he'd ever seen. Which, considering, was saying something.

"This King certainly keeps us in the lap of luxury" he commented, dripping sarcasm.

Armand walked, keeping himself fairly quiet, for once. He was deep in thought. Those were the moods he tended to be, either talking nonstop, or being absolutely silent as he figured things out. When he got to the right room number, he turned to face Der Tod, smiled at him.

"Here." He laughed softly at the other man's words. "I hear that on the other side of the Labyrinth, things are much better. Here... ugh." He glanced with distaste at the room, which was the same as his, as far as he could tell.

"Is there anything else you would know? The sun will rise soon, and I must be safely in the dark before then."

Der Tod wasn't really listening to Armand. He was seething again, furious that this so-called 'King' dared think such... mediocre accommodations were in any way suitable. This king would pay for this eventually.

"Go, go" he said, with a dismissive wave of his hand to Armand. He wasn't trying to be rude, but there were far more important things to worry about right now. "Thank you" he said as a rather insincere afterthought.
