Day 9: Arrival Thread
WHO: Rudolf Habsburg, Gabrielle
WHEN: Day 9, late morning
WHAT: Rudolf's gone a little off course on his way to Mayerling and ended up in Illusion City
WHERE: the streets of Illusion City
RATING: um...PG-13, just to be safe?
STATUS: Complete

Everything had gone so terribly wrong. How had it gotten so out of hand so quickly? Rudolf went over and over what had happened as he stared out the window of his carriage. He had time enough to mull over the horrible details on the journey to Mayerling. Now, more than ever, he was glad he'd bought the place and fixed it up as a private lodge for himself. He needed to get away from the palace, get away from his father, and just think. Of course, he was going under guard. Given what had happened, Rudolf was surprised he'd been allowed to leave at all. Perhaps his father felt himself safer with Rudolf tucked away at his lodge.

The only problem was, the longer he sat in the cab, the more trapped Rudolf felt. The walls felt like they were pressing in on him, wrapping him in a cocoon. He shook his head, worry lining his brow, and stared at his hands. "Stop!" he called out, leaning forward to bang on the wall of the carriage. The guard opposite him reached for a pistol, but froze when Rudolf ignored him completely. "Stop the carriage!"

"Your highness?" the guard asked, clearly uncomfortable with the Crown Prince's actions.

"I just need to step out for a moment," Rudolf said. "I need some fresh air." He opened the door as soon as the driver had pulled the horses to a stop, and jumped out to the ground below. He blinked as he straightened to his feet, and his jaw fell open. They'd been traveling through woods. He'd seen the thick-set trees just a moment before. Now, he found himself in a snow-dusted town, of sorts. He turned back to the carriage, only to find it had disappeared. He took a step backward, looking all around.

Madness. There was no other explanation for it. He must have gone mad. Rudolf looked around again, turning right, then left. He felt a smile tug at the corner of his mouth and shook his head. He wouldn't give into madness. Not now. He just had to clear his head. That's why he'd been going to Mayerling. Perhaps if he were patient, the odd vision would subside, and he'd find himself back in the forest, beside his carriage, his guard looking at him sternly.

Rudolf walked over to the nearest building and lay his hand on the wall. Did madness feel real? Was that the mark of madness? The building felt like a building, not a tree. Perhaps he'd dozed off in the carriage, and they'd stopped in a town on the way to Mayerling? Rudolf nodded. That seemed far more likely than madness. He coughed and straightened up, an unconscious habit he'd picked up from his father, and decided that must be it. He'd turned down a side street in some little village. The carriage would be right around the next corner, or the one after that. He can't have wandered too far.

But, the more he walked, the less sure he was about this new idea. The architecture didn't look anything like the towns in Austria he'd visited. Had his father perhaps given the carriage orders to get rid of him somewhere, remove him entirely, the way he surely had Elmer and the others by now? Rudolf froze at that thought. That was the one thing he felt worst about in all of this. He couldn't help Elmer or Zeps, or any of his new friends escape from his father's men. The guilt and helplessness overtook him, and he sank to the ground, burying his head in his hands. He did not cry, however. Tears did no one any good. He'd learned that lesson years ago, and just suffered a painful reminder of it.

He remained seated for several moments, eyes closed, as he got control of himself again. Upon at last looking up, Rudolf noticed that he wasn't alone. He scrambled to his feet in surprise at seeing another person in the streets and stumbled to find a greeting that wouldn't sound odd or awkward. "Um, good morning," he managed at last.

Gabrielle was quite content, really. She and Xena had made it through the Labyrinth, and they, obviously, hadn't been sent home. She knew her best friend was bitterly disappointed by this, but though she hated herself for it, she couldn't help but be relieved. Home was uncertainty, constant danger, fighting. Here, she'd actually found some time to relax, which was unusual, but undoubtedly nice.

So, she could definitely be considered to be happy. When she'd rolled out of bed that morning, Xena had been gone, and long gone from how cold the blankets were. She shrugged, knowing that her friend had her own things to work out about being here, and got out of bed herself. Now, she figured, was the time to see about food first, and then checking out this strange place. Christmas, she'd never heard of, but she knew snow, and the winter solstice. The stocking, however, just got a weird look from her, and she left it alone.

It didn't take her long to get from her place in the Goblin City to the Illusion City. In a nod to the elements, she wore a thick green cloak over her normal outfit, red halter top, skirt, and of course, her boots and knives. Except for when the wind blew and brushed the cloak aside, she found she was quite warm, despite her limited experience with snow. She turned her green-eyed gaze toward the strange machines of the amusement park, a smile perking her lips. It looked like fun!

It also wasn't to be. Ahead of her, she saw a brief flash of light, and then a man appeared. He stumbled around for a bit as the blonde bard watched cautiously, but he looked... confused. A new arrival, certainly. The least she could do was help him. So she approached, still cautiously, hands on the handle of her weapons, just in case. Gabrielle might not look like much, but she was more than capable. But, for now, she just stopped and looked at the man.

"Are you new?" Her voice was warm, friendly, and compelling, in it's own way. She gave the impression that she really did want to be your friend. "I can help you, if you want."

Rudolf nodded, trying his best not to stare at the young woman smiling so kindly at him. He didn't want to be rude, after all. But, her clothing...could he even call it clothing? The wind had blown her cape aside, revealing her rather indelicate outfit, and Rudolf felt a slight warmth in his cheeks. "I'm afraid I'm lost," he said at last. "Have you seen a carriage? I was traveling with a guard and a coachman."

He looked around the snowy streets again, brushing unconsciously at his trousers and jacket, dusting the flakes from them. Surely the carriage had to be somewhere. Even if his father had decided to get rid of him, abandonment in a small village was not how such things were done. At the very least, the guard would have remained, grumbling all the while about exile. "I just stepped out for a moment," he continued, glancing back at the woman. He made very sure not to let his eyes look lower than her neck. He didn't want her to get any sorts of ideas.

She was starting to think there was something wrong with the way she dressed. Caspian had had an odd reaction to it, too. But it was just normal where she came from, and in fact, many people she knew wore less. So she didn't really understand by he was blushing, but closed her cloak against the cold wind, which made her shiver. And also hid her outfit, though she wasn't even entirely sure that's what was bothering him. After all, she'd only just met him, she didn't really have a way to know why he reacted certain ways.

"Oh... oh dear. You don't know, do you? Am I the first one you've met here?" Her heart went out to him, and she took a step closer, sympathy on her face. Now, how was she supposed to explain the situation here without sounding as mad as Callisto? She sighed softly.

"I have some bad news for you."

She closed her cape, and Rudolf relaxed just a little. Now, at least, he wouldn't have to worry about being considered indecent for looking at her. He listened to her words, not quite sure what she was getting at. "You're the first person I've seen here, yes," he said. He looked around again. "I must say, I would have expected a little town like this to be ... more alive at this hour of the day."

It was odd, now that he really thought about it. Anytime he went out into Vienna, or into the villages near Mayerling, the streets were always full of people during the daylight. Peddlers, beggars, people going about daily business. This town was eerily quiet. "Has something happened here?" he asked, looking at the woman. "Some sort of disease? Has anyone sent for help?" Plague of some sort was the only kind of bad news Rudolf could think of to account for the lack of people moving about. His driver wouldn't have stopped in a town if he'd know about any sort of disease outbreak, so clearly, it was a recent occurrence. He'd figure out what was going on, and then ride back to Vienna to tell his father. All other problems aside, the Emperor had to be made aware of something like this.

Gabrielle still didn't understand why he had reacted as he had, but was just happy he seemed to have relaxed a bit. And, in all honesty, if he had gawked at her, she would have felt a little strange about it. Not that people hadn't looked at her before, but again, it was just normal on her world to dress like she did. But she shrugged the whole question, and turned her attention to the matter more immediately at hand.

"Well, people are around. But there aren't nearly as many people here as the buildings would suggest." She looked around. "But you can find them. Anyway, they'll probably be at that strange place with all the machines." She meant the amusement park, but since such a thing was outside her experience, she didn't know what to call it.

She sighed as she looked back at him. "I'm afriad not, nothing so simple. Not that I'd want plague, because I wouldn't! But you're not at home any more." She stopped, thought about that. "You're not even on the same world. This is the Underground, and I'm sorry to tell you that you've been kidnapped."

Strange place with the machines? Some sort of factory, perhaps? That would explain the empty streets, Rudolf thought. If this was a manufacturing town, most people, adults and children, would be involved in the factory somehow. The thought put him at ease for a moment.

Then, the woman started talking about being in an underground. "Underground?" Rudolf asked, looking all around again. And then she mentioned being kidnapped. That got Rudolf's attention. "I beg your pardon? How can that be possible? I just stepped out of my carriage a moment ago." He felt no ill effects, like he assumed he'd feel if he'd been knocked on the head or drugged somehow. How could he have been kidnapped between opening his carriage door and stepping onto the road?

Gabrielle turned to look at him, and from the expression on her face, it was all too clear that he hadn't fully understood. She gave him a little half-smile, trying to ease the blow, and tried again. She had to help him understand that this was real, that he wasn't home. Or else he'd find out in some undoubtedly more unpleasant way.

"It's called the Underground, I'm not sure why. It might have something to do with the Underworld, but I'm the only one who thinks so." Still sympathetic, she rested a light hand on his arm, trying to soften the blow. "There's a king who took us all from our own worlds, brought us here to amuse him. I know it must seem a little hard to believe, but it's true."

Rudolf listened carefully to the woman's explanation, trying to make sense of what she was telling him. It sounded like something out of a fairy tale. But, he didn't think she was lying to him. She looked too earnest to be lying. So, either she was mad, he was mad, or she really was speaking the truth. Given the options, Rudolf found he far preferred the last.

He offered her a smile as she touched his arm. It was something his mother would have done to reassure him, and did much to make him less ill at ease. "What sort of a man is this king," he asked, "that he can take people from their homes and bring them here completely unawares? He must be very callous."

Speaking of the absent king made Rudolf realize he hadn't yet introduced himself to the woman. His eyes widened slightly, and he pulled away from her, standing up straight. "Forgive me, madam, I haven't introduced myself. I'm afraid this sudden change has robbed me of my manners." He bowed formally to her. "Rudolf Habsburg, Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary." He smiled at the woman and offered her his hand.

Well, he was taking it better than she might have expected. She still remembered it being distinctly uncomfortable to be pulled from her own world, and Xena had even been there to meet her. He didn't even have that. She had to feel sort of bad for him, and thought that in his position, she might have reacted much worse.

"The King? His name is Jareth. He is an odd looking man, very slender, and his hair is like nothing I've ever seen. Sort of... like a lion's mane, only not. And he is cruel, malicious, and sees us all as toys." She shrugged. "But the only way to meet him is to complete his labyrinth."

When he bowed, she did her best to curtsey, though it wasn't something she was used to doing very often. "Hello, Your Highness! My name's Gabrielle, it's nice to meet you." She offered another smile. "We should find your room, it's cold out."

Being raised in a palace, Rudolf had certainly heard stories of kings and emperors who acted as this King Jareth did. But, of course, none of them had wielded power over elements the way this king clearly did. To be able to treat people like trinkets and remove them from their proper shelf, and not put them back! He really did sound like some sort of magician or god from a story book, especially when Gabrielle said the only way to get an audience was to go through some sort of maze. Like Aeneas journeying to the underworld - a fantastical quest. Perhaps Rudolf was a touch mad after all. Surely any sane person would scoff at this description?

"The pleasure is mine, Fraulein Gabrielle," Rudolf said. His smile faltered a bit when she mentioned a room, and confusion crossed his features. "My room?" Then, he shook his head. "It seems the king thinks of everything, then." A thought crossed his mind suddenly. "Tell me, Fraulein Gabrielle, are you a native of this place, or are you newly come as well?"

Gabrielle's already large green eyes widened, and she shook her head. "No, Gods, no. I only got here a week ago. The only natives I know of are the goblins, but I have a suspicion about some of the people that look human, too. Somehow, they just don't seem right..." Those who tended the concession stands, for example. They seemed to be alright, but when you looked away, it was hard to remember their faces. But she put that question aside, because the wind kept tugging at her cloak, making her remember just how chilly it was out.

"Fraulein? What does that mean?" Always curious, she was pretty much constantly ready to learn something. And she'd certainly never heard that word before. "Yes, the King gives you a room, but I'll warn you, it's strange. When you get through the Labyrinth, though, you get a whole new place, which is much better." She smiled at him. "I think you have to go get your room key from a desk in the big building. I'll take you there, if you like!" Her smile was friendly, warm, and open.

"Goblins?" Rudolf echoed, raising an eyebrow. Even more like a fairy tale, then. He decided it was probably best if he didn't think about such things right now, and concentrated on figuring out the basics. He was both pleased and saddened that Gabrielle was also a stranger in this new land. Pleased, because it meant she probably understood at least a little of what was going through his mind concerning the circumstances. Saddened, because Rudolf didn't like the idea of anyone being a prisoner if they'd not done anything wrong. And, since he had no idea how Gabrielle acted except for this dialogue with him, he could think nothing but positive thoughts about her character. Aside from the rather odd choice of clothing, but perhaps it was more fitting for wherever she'd come from. "I'm sorry you've been stolen away too," he said.

Rudolf chuckled when she asked what "fraulein" meant. "It's a title," he explained, smiling at her. "Miss, I suppose, would be its equivalent." Her smile was infectious, and Rudolf found himself grinning in return. "I would appreciate the help, thank you," he said earnestly. "Please, after you."

"Yeah, I think that's what their called. Weird little things with lumpy faces. Not really sure why the king uses such ugly creatures to serve him, but maybe I just don't understand the royal approach." She tilted her head to the side and smiled brightly at him as he spoke. "Oh, that's sweet! But I have my best friend here, so I don't mind. Anywhere she goes, I go. If she wasn't here, I'd be finding a way home, but as it is... well, this isn't such a bad place." Actually, she was comfortable here, for various reasons. Yes, she'd been kidnapped, and that bothered her, but she also was freed, more or less, from the obligation of fighting.

"Oh! A title." She nodded wisely. "Well, just Gabrielle will do. I'm not very fancy." She nodded at him, turned on her heel, and gestured for him to follow. She had to say, she liked this man. He seemed very friendly, which, of course, was something she appreciated. "Come on, I'll take care of you."

"Best friend," Rudolf said, his tone wistful. That was nice for Gabrielle, having her friend here. He felt a pang of longing for his own best friend, and a wave of guilt. He didn't even know whether the man was okay, whether he'd escaped Father's soldiers. He shook his head slightly and mustered up a smile. "Then I'm glad for you. I'm sure having her here is a comfort."

Rudolf fell into step with Gabrielle as she walked through the streets. "It's a term of politeness, Fraulein," he explained as they walked. "But if you wish, I'll call you by your name, Gabrielle. Please, call me Rudolf then." He smiled kindly at her. The smile widened when she told him she'd take care of him. He'd wanted to hear those words from a woman's lips for a very, very long time. Gabrielle wasn't anything like his mother, but she had a mothering sort of air, which Rudolf responded to easily.

Gabrielle smiled softly. Xena was an easy subject to get her to open up about, really. "Yeah, she's amazing. She's a warrior, and I travel with her. We've been through so much... like, this one time, she kept me from dying. Literally, I was dead, and sehe brought me back just by refusing to let go of me." Her smile was definitely fond now as she spoke of Xena. "She's a comfort, yeah. And she's always there for me, do you know that? It's just incredible. She's the best person I've ever met."

"Oh! I see. Well, I'm honored, but I would probably have no idea who you were talking to if you called me that." She laughed easily as they walked side by side down the street. "That would be great, if you really don't mind! Rudolf... I like that name. What does it mean?" She turned to him, as always smiling, as they reached the main building.

Rudolf smiled as Gabrielle described her friend. "I have a friend like that, back home. He's always been there for me. He hasn't saved me from death, or anything like that, but he helped me a lot growing up. We used to play tricks on my grandmother and all of the members of court, and he'd comfort me if my tutors were particularly brutal after lessons." Rudolf's eyes unfocused a little as memories came drifting forward in his mind's eye. "He always believed in me, when no one else would, and believed I'd end up being a good emperor one day." He shook his head. "But, he's not here now, so I've got to figure out for myself what I'm doing, make some new friends here." He smiled at Gabrielle. She seemed like a good candidate for a friend, as kind as she had been to him thus far.

She had a pretty laugh, especially since Rudolf could tell she wasn't laughing at him, but at the circumstance. He chuckled as well. "I wouldn't want to make things difficult for you," he said. He stepped forward as they reached the main building and took hold of the door handle, pulling the main doors open for her. "It's a family name," he said when asked about his name. "One of the very first Habsburgs to consolidate power in Europe was named Rudolf, back in the 13th century." He, like Gabrielle, found smiling easy to do in present company. "What about your name? It's lovely."

Gabrielle practically beamed at him. "I've come to the conclusion that friendship, real, true friendship, is one of the best things in the world. Maybe the best thing." She listened as he spoke, and shook her head. "I think it must be harder to be in your position than I'd ever thought of before. It's nice that you had such a good friend to help you through. You're very lucky." She rested a gentle hand on his arm once more. "And so was he, to have your friendship..." She looked concerned for a moment, realizing that she was probably bringing up a sore subject. She knew if Xena wasn't here, she would be pretty crazy to find her.

"Maybe he'll be brought too? Xena and I both were." For his sake, she hoped so. He seemed so nice, and a little lost. She could understand, since without Xena, she'd be in the exact same place as he was. Nodding her thanks, she stepped into the door and then turned back to face him, listening. "Oh, that's a wonderful thing, to have a family name." She smiled. "My name? I don't know, actually. My mother would never tell me. I've read about the angel Gabriel, though, and I think that might be where it came from."

She gestured over to the middle of the room, where a goblin sat behind a desk. "He'll give you a room key, and a journal."

"Thank you," Rudolf said, smiling at Gabrielle. She seemed genuinely sympathetic to him, and concerned that he was alone here. She was so kind. "I agree. There is nothing more pleasing in the world than a strong friendship."

When she mentioned the possibility of his dear friend being brought here as well, Rudolf's eyes lit up. "Do you think so?" he asked hopefully. "I mean, I wouldn't want to trap someone here, but it would be so nice to have him nearby. He promised he'd always be there for me, but here, well...." Rudolf lifted his hands and shrugged. There was nothing to be done about it. Either the man would appear, or he wouldn't, and there wasn't anything to be done about it either way. It wouldn't do to get his hopes up too much.

He stepped into the room after Gabrielle, nodding as she explained her presumed origin of her name. "That makes sense," he said, "and it's a very good namesake." He followed her gesture with his eyes, spying a grotesque creature seated behind a large desk. "I...see," he said. "Pardon me for one moment then, please." He gave a nod to her, then turned toward the desk.

"Excuse me, er, sir, but I believe I am to pick up a key?" Rudolf tried his best to be polite to the creature, but it was difficult to keep his face schooled into a decent expression. The creature was uglier even than his grandmother. It said not a word, but passed Rudolf a key and a little book with a pen. Rudolf took them and nodded to the creature, then turned back to Gabrielle. "What is the journal for?" he asked, walking back up to her.

Gabrielle completely understood his feelings on the subject, and was entirely sympathetic to them. She returned the smile, and nodded. "Anything's possible, right?" Not that she was entirely comfortable with wishing someone into captivity, but for the sake of her new friend, she found herself hoping that his best friend would arrive.

"But, either way, I'll be your friend." She nodded at him comfortingly, and then gestured. "Go ahead, I'll wait here." She waited by the door as he collected his key and journal, and when he came back, gave him another warm smile.

"You write in it." She nodded at the book. "And you can read what other people write, and they can read what you write. You can write little comments in response, too. It's really amazing." She was a big fan of the journals, and loved to read all the posts everyone else made.

"What number is on your room key? I'll help you find it, if you like."

"You can read what others have written?" Rudolf flipped through the first few pages and indeed saw several different styles of handwriting. He would have to look at this device more carefully later. "This is unbelievable. Is everything you write in here visible to all the people in this town?" He glanced up at Gabrielle again. He could see the usefulness of having messages conveyed so quickly, especially without his servants to carry messages for him, but he wasn't sure he wanted everything broadcast so widely. He did like to write down his own private thoughts, even at home. It helped him think.

Rudolf glanced down at the key in his hand. "F 213," he said, squinting just a little to read the number engraved on the metal. So, that was his address while he was here? It was rather odd. When Gabrielle offered to help him find his new room, he smiled at her in gratitude. "If you don't mind. It would be a great help." He stepped around her and held the door open for her again.

"Yes!" She watched him with a grin on her face, delighted by his surprise. She remembered when she'd learned that you could actually write to other people in the journals, and was happy to see someone else's response to it. "I was blown away when I realized what they could do. I hear you can write private entries as well, just by writing at the top that it's private." The blond bard watched as he flipped through the pages with her head tilted slightly to the side, but she didn't interupt him and just waited for him to be finished.

When he spoke, though, she was ready. "Okay! I'll take you there. We just have to go to the F building, and then go up to the second floor." She looked around, trying to get her bearings. "This way!" Gabrielle set off down a corridor, which would eventually lead to an exit outside, one closest to the dorm building they were looking for. "I'll give you a bit of a tour as we go..." She pointed out things as they passed. "That's the restaurant, you can get food there. Library through here..." And so on.

"Just write that it's private," Rudolf echoed, filing the information away for later. Writing would help him, he knew. "It sounds deceptively simple. I wonder how it actually works." It was yet another thing that seemed like it came out of a fairy tale in this place. Goblin servants, magic books. All that was missing was a fairy godmother or an evil witch.

Rudolf scanned the hallway and nodded as Gabrielle pointed out the various rooms. Perhaps he'd explore later, if he felt up to it. He did his best to commit the locations to memory. He wasn't hungry just yet, and books, while alluring, weren't foremost in his thoughts right now. But he smiled at Gabrielle as she showed him around. "I'd be lost trying to do this on my own," he admitted as they walked. "It's quite disorienting, arriving here and then trying to make sense of everything."

Rudolf again opened the door and held it for Gabrielle when they reached the exit, and did the same as they approached another building, presumably this F dorm. "Is your room nearby?" he asked. Then, almost immediately, he winced. "Forgive me, that was an incredibly personal question, Gabrielle. I didn't mean...I just...." He took a deep breath and started again. "I mean to ask, may I call on you at home some time? It would be nice to see friends often while here." Rudolf hoped he hadn't come across as too brazen or rude. Stephanie would never forgive him if he had crossed a line with a woman. Not that he always cared what Stephanie thought, but in that respect, he didn't wish to upset her, even here. Worse yet, his mother would disapprove if he'd acted rudely toward Gabrielle, and the thought of his mother's disapproval was enough to flush his cheeks.

"Well..." She thought about that, then grinned widely. "I think that if it didn't work, we'd see a lot more entries that would have 'Private' written on them, right?" She laughed, finding the mental image amusing for some reason. It would be horribly embarassing, of course, to think you were writing something private, and to have everyone able to read it the whole time.

She continued to play tour guide as they passed the various rooms, and gave a little blurb about each one. Some of them, like the gym, she didn't really understand, but she went on at length about the library. "There are all sorts of stories in there, even things from worlds I've never heard of! It's amazing, I could spend all my time in there."

The blonde bard stood back and let him open the door, smiling at his politeness. She was very favorably impressed by his manners. The problem with being a wandering bard was that you tended to meet a lot of very rude people, but he was obviously anything but. As he asked his question, and then looked completely embarassed, she was quick to jump to reassuring him. "Actually, it's funny you should mention that. I'm in the same building, that's how I know where it is." She laughed, trying to put him at ease. "Well, one of my rooms is. I also have a room in the castle at the center of the Labyrinth."

Rudolf chuckled at the idea of seeing "private" marked on other handwritings in his journal. "I think in that case, there would be many angry people here," he said. It would be amusing, but in an unfortunate way. The last thing he would want was to write something about what had been going on at home, and have it broadcast to the entirety of the land. Information could be a weapon, in the wrong hands.

At her kind handling of his faux pas, Rudolf felt his cheeks warm even more. But, he smiled at the thought his new friend was so close by. Then, she said only one of her rooms. "You have a room in the castle?" he asked.

"The private entry isn't something I've tried. Maybe I should. I'll let you know how it goes, if I do." Not that Gabrielle was normally big on hiding things, of course, but it would be a fun experiment to try. "I wonder if I could even write private messages to someone else... what do you think? It could be a good way to communicate, even secret things!"

As they wandered to the dorm building that they both had rooms in, Gabrielle turned to look at him. "Yes. My friend Xena and I went through the Labyrinth, and got a room in the castle. But we get to keep our old rooms, too, and since not very many people have made it through, yet, I spend a lot of time here. It's sort of boring over there.. though much nicer than here."

"It would be very useful," Rudolf agreed. If only he'd had something as ingenious as this back home. Zeps would have found brilliant ways to use journals like these, and the movement for an independent Hungary and Danube Commonwealth would have been far better organized. And if you truly could write messages only certain other people could read, then his father would never have found out about the meetings. Rudolf shook his head slightly, trying to stir himself out of the mire of "if only". That was the fastest way to madness and despair, and he was enjoying Gabrielle's company far too much to tread that road right now.

He chuckled at her explanation of the castle. "I would imagine so," he said. "Castles are often nicer places than inns, which is what this place reminds me of." He let Gabrielle precede him up the stairs as a courtesy. "Winning through the labyrinth allows one a place in the castle, though? That's...interesting." In truth, it was a bit disappointing. Rudolf had hoped that, should he try for an audience with the king, he might convince the other man to let him return home. Merely changing rooms seemed like a poor concession. "Are you on the second floor as well, Gabrielle?" he asked.

Gabrielle nodded, but being the empathetic person she was, she heard the pain in his voice and stopped with that line. After all, if he wanted to talk, he knew that... but wait. This was a new friend, he might not know that about her. So, smiling at him, she gently touched his shoulder. "You know, if you need to talk, I'm a good listener." And she left it at that. If he wanted to talk, he could. If not, she would be his friend anyway.

With that out of the way, she turned and went up the stairs. "Uh, no, I don't think so. I don't think it works that way. When you go through the Labyrinth, it seems to depend on how well you do. If you just get through decently well, you get a house. If you do a little better, you get a room in the palace. Who knows, maybe if you do it well enough, you might even get to go home." But... in truth, she was glad that she and Xena hadn't done well enough for that, if that was, indeed, the case.

"Me? No, first floor." She laughed. "This is my first time up these stairs." She reached the top, looked around, and got her bearings. "It looks the same. Your room should be this way." She pointed.

Gabrielle's offer to listen meant more to Rudolf than she could realize. That was the true mark of a friend, in his eyes. Someone who would listen to your troubles, without judging. He smiled at her, the smile beaming through his eyes as well. "Thank you," he said, his voice full of warmth. He wasn't quite ready yet, but to know that someone here was willing to listen when he did feel ready to share his problems was enough.

He listened carefully and nodded. That made sense, he guessed. At least, as much as anything here had made sense thus far. Perhaps once he'd gotten his thoughts in order, he could make an attempt and impress the king. But that too was something for another day.

"First floor?" Rudolf said, frowning slightly. "But, the second floor would be safer." This king was remiss in his duties, putting ladies on the first floor. Unless he kept the kingdom so safe that there were no fears of break-ins. But, no kingdom was that safe. It was impossible.

Rudolf looked at the doors on the hallway, scanning the numbers. He walked down past the first few numbers, counting up from 201, until he found 213. "A-ha," he said, looking at the rather nondescript door. He held his key up to double-check that it was indeed the match for the door, then slid it into the lock, opening the door with just a bit of a shove. It stuck a little, but that would lessen over time. The room clearly hadn't been used in a while.

The interior of the room matched the featureless exterior. Nothing but the simplest furnishings and accessories adorned the rather small room. Still, it had a window, which let in a surprising amount of light for its size. It was nothing like his rooms at home, but it was functional. He took a step inside, looking around, memorizing the features easily, and turned back to Gabrielle. "Is your room as...utilitarian...as this one?" he asked.

Gabrielle tilted her head at him curiously. "Safer? No one can come into our rooms without our permission." She grinned suddenly. "And anyway, even if they did, Xena and I can take care of ourselves." At one time, that would have been 'Xena can take care of herself, and me', but those days were long past. "So don't worry."

She fell into step with him, taking off her cloak and hanging it over her arm. It was much warmer in here, and she was more comfortable without it. The bard watched as he found his room, and then smiled happily.

"Oh, yes. The rooms on the other side, though, can look like whatever you want." She peered into his room, which was, as far as she could tell, a match for hers. "Some of the fabrics and textures in this place feel weird to me, I've never seen anything like them. But it's not so bad. I don't spend much time in my room, anyway. There's so much to see out there... have you ever been to.. an amusement park, I think it's called? There's one out there. If it's still there in a couple of days, we should go, what do you think?"

The king wasn't as remiss as Rudolf had thought. If no one could enter a room without permission, that would at least ensure a basic line of defense. Rudolf smiled at Gabrielle as she mentioned taking care of herself. She seemed too nice to end up fighting against someone. But, as Rudolf well knew, looks could be deceiving. His father, after all, seemed like a perfectly reasonable man upon first meeting. It was only once you started talking to him that he revealed himself to be a closed-minded.... Best not to dwell on that right now, Rudolf decided. "It's a gentleman's duty to worry about a lady, but I will try," he said to Gabrielle.

"It reminds me even more of an inn now," Rudolf said as he inspected his room. He glanced aside as he realized that Gabrielle had removed her cloak. She didn't seem that disturbed by her lack of clothing, so he'd try not to make an issue out of it, for politeness' sake. He didn't want to insult a new friend. "It gives you exactly what you need and nothing more."

Rudolf shook his head. "I've never heard of such a place," he said, turning back to Gabrielle, keeping his eyes firmly fixed on her pleasant face. "I'd like to see it, yes. Thank you." He could almost see his wife's raised eyebrow in his mind's eye. He was sure she wouldn't approve. But, she didn't approve of many things he did, including spending time with friends. So he'd never paid much mind to that. He glanced around the little room. "I'd offer you refreshment, but there doesn't seem to be anything to offer," he said sheepishly.

Well, that changed things. A gentleman's duty to worry about a lady! Gabrielle liked this man, she decided. He called her a lady. That wasn't the most common thing ever, and it made her beam at him happily. "Thank you. I appreciate the thought."

The bard, having spent a lot of time in inn rooms, nodded. She knew exactly what he meant, for it had seemed that way to her at first, too, and especially so since she had seen the rooms in the castle, which were pure luxury.

When he agreed, she smiled brightly at him. "Good! I'll write a note to you in my journal, we can meet once you've settled in a bit." She glanced around, and then looked at him. "Is there anything else you need help with while I'm here?"

"I look forward to it, Gabrielle," Rudolf said, smiling at her. Using this new little journal would be interesting. He set it on the little table by his bedside carefully. There'd be time enough to peruse it later.

As much as he enjoyed her company, Rudolf decided it would be rude to keep her from whatever business she'd had any longer than he already had done. "I think that I'll be fine for now, thank you," he said, looking back at her. "As you say, I think I just need to settle in a bit. It's quite a lot to take in at once."

He also didn't want to end up losing control of himself in front of her. But the realization that he was, for all intents and purposes, trapped here, away from his mother, his friends, any sort of useful action, was beginning to weigh on him. And he didn't want to make his new friend worry. "If you would excuse me, Gabrielle?" he said, bowing to her and stepping toward his door.

"Me too!" Her tone was completely sincere. She truly loved meeting new people, making new friends, and she thought this man was one of the nicest she'd met in a long time. Both he and Caspian had made her feel like the lady that she most definitely wasn't, and she had to admit, part of her liked it. She was glad she'd made friends with them both.

"I'll see you in a few days... and remember what I said. If you want to talk about anything...you know how to find me." She smiled at him. "I'm downstairs in room F 118, if you need anything, alright?"

With one more gentle touch to his arm, and one last smile, she turned around, leaving him. He had, undoubtedly, quite a lot of settling in to do. But she very much was looking forward to seeing him again.
