WHO: Carlisle and Delirium
WHEN: Day seven, early afternoon
WHAT: Even happy vampires brood
WHERE: Somewhere between the fair and the clinic
RATING: PG
STATUS: Complete

For as happy as he was for Edward and Juniper, there was a part of him that was jealous. A small part, and a part that he wished he could cut out with a scalpel as efficiently as he did tumors back home. But he couldn't and so he was left with dealing with his missing of his wife by himself. Jasper wasn't even there to make the feeling go away. Carlisle had never realised how much he relied on his son until that moment. All of his children, really. Even their very personalities, talents aside, were a help to him, and he hadn't understood it completely until his rambunctious family was taken away from him.

He walked slowly back to the clinic, his hands shoved in his pockets and a rather broody look on his face, for once oblivious to the way the sun made him sparkle. He didn't need to hide here, and he was far too wrapped up in his thoughts to really care at any rate. He missed his wife, he missed his children, and really, he just wanted to go home.

The last thing that Delirium really remembered was talking with someone in San Francisco. They had been on Haight Street, discussing the politics of plants, green thumbs and orange hands. Barnabas had reminded her that they needed to go. So the duo had taken off, the sensible one alongside the more distracted redhead. She had wanted to visit with her Siblings, any one of them but mostly two of them. That was where she intended to go.

She should have known to look first where she expected to be last. "Left turn was not taken at Albuquerque." The young woman murmured to her companion before looking to the wing shape that her shadow took on. They walked, the girl who couldn't have been more than fifteen and her dog, and were trying to figure out where they were. Well, Barnabas was trying to figure it out. Sensible creature. Delirium spoke again, "Not where we're not expected. Always expect the unexpected." It could have been a warning, but it was more of a statement. Someone was expecting what never could be truly expected. So she wasn't worried. Wherever they were, they'd end up where they were meant to be. Del didn't mind taking detours.

Sunset hued butterflies took off, and Delirium followed absently, humming some nameless tune. The butterflies were distracted by the sparkling up ahead, and hovered nearby while waiting for the girl and German Shepherd to catch up to the object of their attention. Once they got closer to the thinking man, she smiled. But didn't say anything. Not yet.

Carlisle had trained himself so severely to ignore the scent of human blood, that he actually smelled the dog first. Which wasn't exactly a great thing, as animals of all kinds tended to shy away from him and his kind, if not get outright violent in the attempt to protect themselves. They knew danger and reacted appropriately, where humans seemed to fail.

He saw the butterflies next, and smiled slightly, stopping his path and turning around to regard the child and her dog behind him. She looked harmless, despite her oddity, or perhaps because of it, and Carlisle smiled his most friendly smile, the one that put every patient under his care at ease. She seemed content to just look at him, which was rather unnerving, though he supposed a glittering man was something to look at. "Hello."

Though he was sometimes wary, Barnabas didn't get protective until he knew that there was an actual danger to his ward. It didn't hurt that he was an animal who hung around physical embodiments of things that people thought were harmful. Destruction was the one who befriended him first, after all. So the dog merely kept an eye on what was going on.

The butterflies fluttered around the man but didn't crowd him, and the girl was still watching. Then she looked up at the sky. It was still sunny, which made her thoughtful. "Highs and lows are strange ways for first words." She mused, but was smiling in return and giving a wave in greeting. "I prefer waves, like oceans and emotions." He was..sparkly. Like the stars. "Stars are walking early?"

Oookay then. Carlisle had a decidedly confused look on his face for a moment, trying to figure out why this child was apparently speaking in riddles. Granted, they weren't hard ones to figure out, but it wasn't generally how people did things. And he had three hundred and some years to have figured that out.

So, he just returned her wave, and caught sight of his hand, sparkling in the sun. Well then. "I'm not a star," he assured her with a calm smile. "My name is Carlisle, what's yours?" he asked, his tone and posture non-threatening, welcoming even. He wondered if she was lost, or if she knew where she was, and was just being odd because that's who she was.

"Del, I am. It's short." A shortening of her name, rather. Sometimes people got the wrong (or right) impression when she gave her full name. She shifted, watching his hand with a small sort of smile. "Short is longer than long, but not longer. Length is a funny thing, especially when traveling." Her attention was diverted from the hand made of stardust and mismatched gaze was looking around.

"Never here, never there.." The butterflies settled on her shoulders and got hidden within lazily shifting hair. Or they became her hair, if one stared cock-eyed enough. "Barnabas asks where is here?" Attention reverted back to Carlisle, "Unexpected things are always expected here."

"It's nice to meet you, Del," Carlisle smiled, stepping forward a bit, now that he was relatively sure that she wasn't afraid of him, and her dog wasn't going to go insane. The animal couldn't hurt him, of course, but he'd already figured out that the closets left something to be desired, so he was going to have to be careful about his clothing. Lord...Alice had ruined him.

That trick with the butterflies was interesting, to say the least, and Carlisle watched, fascinated by this strange little girl. "Is Barnabas your dog?" he asked, smiling down at the pooch. "Here is the Underground," he offered. "You've just arrived then. Alright. Well, let's see if we can't find you something to eat and I'll do my best to explain this," he said, and offered his hand to her, along with a smile. She seemed so young, so alone, that he couldn't help but feel fatherly toward her, for all her oddity.

The dog snuffled out a response, and Delirium translated. "He and I are kinda partners but not in the busy sense. Not in any sense. Not really mine, more his. The Underground, but there's sun. Not Sons, or Daughters. Or all suns." This thought had her slightly confused as well, more thoughtful than anything else.

"Something treacle-like, please. No green mice ice cream." She made a face then, apparently not liking that flavour, then was sliding her hand within his. "I'm not a fan, haven't got propellers." His hand was cool to the touch, which was nearly as interesting as his shininess. But if Delirium noticed that particular part, she made no show of it. Tattered laces of combat boots (which were just a little too big) made their tat-a-tat noise as they walked.

Carlisle chuckled. "I think you're spared the green mice ice cream," he assured her, working that one over his tongue slowly. The way she spoke was so odd, and yet, some how, it sounded familiar. Like the cadence was something he'd run into before, but couldn't quite get a handle on.

They got over to the concession stands and Carlisle stood patiently until it was their turn to order. Of course, he didn't get anything, but let Del run that deal, before finding them a place to sit.

"Where did you come from, Del?"

The youthful woman stepped up to the counter. "Fairs are fair. And far.." The Underground felt familiar, perhaps in the same way that the way she spoke felt familiar to Carlisle. Only the same in that it was always different. Mismatched eyes went to the concession man and she ordered a funnel cake. "Don't have to eat. Real food is good long as it's..Mm. What's that word, it's more like tea parties and children?" She looked up at the man thoughtfully, free hand digging in her pockets. Oh good. She had her bubbles.

"There and here. Here is like there." She paused again, thinking about it. Then motioned to Barnabas with a braceleted hand, head tilting and prismatic hair shifting slightly. "Calls it imbroglio. Funny word. Do you like it?" After breaking a piece off of the sweet cake, she pushed it toward Carlisle in offering to share.

She didn't have to eat. Well, neither did he, so he could understand that. But Del wasn't anything like Carlisle, that was plain to see. She wasn't anything like anything. Honestly, the good doctor was starting to think that this little girl was certifiably insane. "Pretend?" he offered with a raised brow to her question, tilting his head to the side. "Real food is as good as pretend food?"

"Imbroglio," Carlisle repeated. "It's Italian. It means a confused mass," he said, almost to himself. "No thank you," he said politely, waving off the offered food. Now wasn't the time and this wasn't the person to be getting into all that with. "Well. This is called the Underground, as I said," he nodded. "We've been brought here from our worlds, and I'm sorry, but I don't know how to get you home," he confessed, looking sad about it. "But you'll be taken care of here."

"Pretend. Pre-tend. Before tending? Everything comes before tending, then is tended and real. Confused mass. Some people think I'm confused, and sometimes they're right. But they're mostly left." She wasn't worried terribly much about being in a place that she hadn't expected to be. And continued to eat the sweet.

"You're sad about being here." It wasn't a question, but more of an observation made without looking up. "Sad sometimes but have to remember backwards what about." Then Del looked up and lifted her eyebrows, "Better that way." Said with a shrug of skinny shoulder, which hitched the leather jacket she wore further up. It had been falling off, so that was probably a good thing. The moment of thoughtful melancholy passed though, and she was back to some other subject.

"What's your home like? Many star people?"

Left or right, this girl was an odd one, there was no mistake in that. She was amusing, at least, and clearly didn't mind the predicament she found herself in, despite how dire it was. Carlisle most certainly minded. But perhaps she had little to call home, save what she brought with her.

"Yes, remembering is best," he agreed, or at least, he thought he did. It was a little hard to follow this one. But regardless, he knew all too well that no matter how much pain it caused, remembering was better.

He shook his head. "Not very many, no. Most of the people are just normal humans. My family, they're all like me though," he said, deciding it was better to not get into vampirism with this girl. "I have a wife, three sons, and two daughters," he told her with a sad smile, thinking of his family at home. "One of my sons is here as well. Edward."

"Pathways appear in odd spots. Destiny doesn't know them all." It was so very teenager the way she said it, eyeroll included. That was why she wasn't terribly worried. There were always hidden ways out of a place. Well, that and Delirium ended up in odd places a lot.

"He's One of Seven. Me, I'm at the end of the Endless." She spoke about her own family with a bright smile, tugging on a red curl and watching it shift colours subtly before letting it curl back with the others. "Like you? Not like us but time breaks for you too. Time is weird like that, going diagonally and upside down."

Carlisle couldn't help but laugh as she rolled her eyes at him. She so reminded him of his children, Alice especially. She rolled her eyes at him quite a bit. "I suppose you're right," he allowed with a bit of a nod, and a fatherly smile. While he didn't want to patronize her, over eighty years of living with teenagers could do that to a guy.

End of the Endless...Carlisle didn't know what that meant, and he couldn't hold in his curiosity forever. "What are you, Del?" he asked, and wished that he could get a straight answer. But regardless of the fact that he could hold his breath indefinitely, he wasn't going to do it for that wish to come true. "Yes, time breaks for me too," he chuckled. He'd never thought of it like that, but if time stopped for anyone, it'd be him.

"Mm." She paused, drawing patterns on the table that they sat at. Barnabas looked up then, but only because her shadow was trying to burrow underneath his head. The dog used it as a pillow then. "Seven of Seven. Always here. Not here-here..though here-here too. Everywhere. Every where. And there." Del looked up then, head tilting.

"Time's..well, time breaks but it never started. Or never stops." She was drawing circles absently with her finger, spiraling down and down and down. "Brothers and Sisters are important for people." It was always hard for Delirium to directly voice what she and her siblings were. How did one explain that they were just an idea personified? Even if they weren't crazy?

Carlisle missed what her shadow was doing, as he was concentrating far too hard on what her fingers were drawing, hoping that he could gain some understanding from that, even if her words made no sense to him at all. "Seven of Seven..." he muttered. "Seven what? Seven of you? Your brothers and sisters? You're the seven what?" he prodded, trying to form the question in a way that she could answer without giving him another bloody riddle.

A goblin came up then with her key and journal, and explained the rules of the Underground briefly before running back off. Carlisle wasn't deterred by the appearance of the creature, rather, it gave him time to think. "End of Endless..." he repeated again, to himself. "Del? What are your brothers and sisters called?" he asked, smiling a bit.

That was a very good question to ask. It would get a direct answer. As soon as she stopped being distracted by the goblin. She studied the key and journal that he gave her, curious. "Was expected! See, Barnabas? The unexpected is expected. Just have to not expect it." The dog snuffled, and Del heaved a sigh at whatever he said.

Names. Names. She looked back up at Carlisle, biting on chapped lips. "Mm. Destiny is the eldest, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium." Seven of seven. "Endless."

Carlisle had experienced much in his time here, and more in his three-hundred years, but very little gave him the joy that her answer did. She was an idea. She was a Repeated Mean, a Mobius Strip. She was wonderful.

"And you are Delirium," he smiled, nodding. He wasn't afraid, why should he be? She was nothing if not harmless, despite what her name, and now that he was putting the pieces together, personification, warned of.

Shaking his head a little bit, Carlisle stood and smiled. "Would you like to find your room, Del?" he asked, going back to the name she'd given him, assuming that was what she was comfortable with. Surprisingly, he felt a great deal more comfortable just knowing what her deal was.

Delirium had sort of pulled away when, waiting for the inevitable moment when Carlisle said that they probably shouldn't hang around each other anymore. Once people understood that she was the reason for their confusion, they often shied away. But he didn't. And that had her tilting her head. If she had ears, one would be flopped over while the other perked up in curiosity.

"O's and K's?" She eyed the man with the smile, and then smiled brightly in return. "The caterpillar's letters change, you know. Not always R's and U's. You want to be my friend? I like friends." She stood as well, brushing off powdered sugar from her face and the shirt underneath the jacket. "That would be very nice, please." Said after a moment's thought, which was the exact time it took to understand the prompt from the nudging dog who stood up as well.

Carlisle smiled. "I would very much like to be your friend," he nodded. If for no other reason than that she was fascinating, but even beyond that, she made him smile. And in his present situation, he needed things that made him smile.

He'd gotten a glimpse of her room number when her key had arrived, eyes sharper than any human's being able to pick out the lettering despite awkward angles or extreme distances. So once she was ready to go, he glanced for Dorm A before leading her in that direction. "What is the place you come from like?" he asked, interested.

That Delighted her, which she also used to be. And sometimes still was, hidden deep within the word salads and non sequitors. The small Idea-person walked with the Starry Man, humming tunelessly. Head moved this way and that, looking around at her surroundings. This place changed too. She could feel it.

"Mm." She paused, mismatched eyes darting quickly to the games that were going on. "Like here. Like me. Where the unexpected's always expected. Fish and rainbows and question marks. Mark always gets questioned. Does he like that? I like asking, but the clouds don't always answer yanno?" What had been the original question? "Imbroglio. Like Barnabas says." That was her Realm. "Here and there. Always close in all ways. Wherever I lay my head is where I'm from."

A great deal of what she said didn't make any sense to Carlisle, but he smiled and nodded appreciatively anyway. Really, that was all he could do, as questions seemed to rarely get him anywhere but further confused with this girl.

"The life of a nomad," he muttered, shaking his head. Not unlike his own life, though Carlisle and his family had perfected their ruse to the best of their abilities, which allowed them to stay in one place for longer periods of time.

And speaking of homes and the laying of heads, they'd arrived at Del's room, and Carlisle patted the door. "Just use your key to get in, and you'll have a place to sleep and clothing to wear. There are food stands, like you saw, for when you're hungry, and otherwise...Just make the best of things," he said with a little shrug.

There were answers somewhere. Sense in the nonsense, if someone was willing to sift through it all. And Carlisle was actually do very well, considering that he just met Delirium. Her own Siblings sometimes got lost with her rambling.

"Nomadic. No mad. And I'm not." Mad that was. She certainly didn't seem to mind that she appeared in a place she hadn't thought to appear at before. "I like making the best. Who doesn't? Nobody says make the worst." Del paused though, green and blue eyes steady for once on the twinkling doctor. "The best stuff is made with dew." Solemnly said. With that the redhead nodded firmly and stuck her key in to have a look inside. Free hand, the one not holding her new journal, pushed it slowly. Then she looked at Carlisle again.

"Where does your head lie?"

Her name was Delirium. Clearly she was mad. But Carlisle didn't argue, just smiled at her assessment of making the best of things, and nodded slightly, watching her open up her door, making sure that her key worked and all before he prepared to take his leave.

"I have a room like yours, though you're more likely to find me in the clinic in the main building," he told her. "I'm a doctor."

A doctor that needed to get back, or he'd never be able to use the clinic, as it wouldn't be set up. "And I really should return there. It was lovely to meet you, Del, and I hope to see you soon," he told her with a smile.

Well, yes. Mad as Hatters. Mad as Cheshire Cats. Or they were as mad as her. Either way, Del knew she was..off. But she wasn't mad, as in angry-mad. One of the perks of being who, and what, she was was that weird stuff like this didn't quite phase her.

Whether that was because she truly understood or not was anyone's guess. But honestly, the redheaded Idea understood more than she let on sometimes.

Either way, she was listening. The Star Man was a doctor! Barnabas took note of this, because Delirium would forget. The dog had also been taking note of the paths to get to the dormitories. Del nodded and smiled. "Thank you for meeting me." Straight forward, mostly. Sometimes manners came out that way.

"You're quite welcome," Carlisle smiled, nodding at her. He wondered if she'd be alright, not being looked after, but a glance at the dog had him wondering if that wasn't his job. She'd be alright, he was sure. There wasn't anyone that could possibly harm such a sweet, innocent little thing.

Giving her one more smile, Carlisle left her, heading back to the clinic in an attempt to get some work done. All in all, a very odd day, and it wasn't close to over yet.
