Carlisle had trained himself so severely to ignore the scent of human blood, that he actually smelled the dog first. Which wasn't exactly a great thing, as animals of all kinds tended to shy away from him and his kind, if not get outright violent in the attempt to protect themselves. They knew danger and reacted appropriately, where humans seemed to fail.
He saw the butterflies next, and smiled slightly, stopping his path and turning around to regard the child and her dog behind him.
