Hypnotized, mesmerized by what my eyes have seen
WHO: Claudia and Bella (and later Carlisle)
WHAT: Hunting
WHEN: Evening of Day Seven
WHERE: Amusement Park
RATING: I'm going to say R outright here.
STATUS: Incomplete

The little vampiress was out. She'd been so lost when she had first come, that after Faith left, she'd mostly hid in her room, quietly withdrawn in grief. Faith's reassurance that she would come had been comforting, but only so much. Loneliness was still loneliness, and sadness still sadness, and hope could perhaps bend them to seem less heavy on her heart, but never extinguish them completely. However, Claudia was first and foremost, and always had been, for all of the sixty-five years that she could remember, a vampire. She needed blood like nothing else, and the lights and music and warm laughter of mortals outside her window were too inviting to be dismissed. Tonight, she would hunt, and perhaps, it would brighten her mood.

Her step on the streets of the city was light, and she could not help but smile widely at the beautiful colours. These machines were strange to her, but the spirit was similar enough to the Carnival of her time (especially with the masque having happened so soon beforehand), that she simply found them rich and wonderful. Of course, part of it was an act. As she walked, she was a beautiful, wide-eyed child, full of the innocence and lost wonder of youth. She decided that if the Sparkly King wished her to have fun, she would. Tonight, not only would she hunt, but she would play. There were many prizes and gifts that she would have, before the night was over. Oh yes. If this was indeed an amusement park, she would be amused.

Her cape pillowed lightly in the crisp night air as she took in the sights, keeping her eye open for anyone that seemed interesting and vulnerable enough. When she did find someone, her features turned to soft concern, a pout threatening to form on her lips as she tugged gently on their clothes. "Excuse me," she said softly, the pale child looking up from long, doll eyelashes. "Why did the city change?" Oh yes. Sister Death was at work once again.

As soon as the words had left her mouth, Bella regretted them. If the little girl was alone, which was the case; she risked upsetting her, which she had, of course. "Ohh.." She said, a worried noise more than an actual intelligible expression, "I'm so sorry." She found herself squatting then to be on the same level as the little girl, not knowing if she should offer a hug or something else to ease the troubling memories she'd forced the little girl to recall.

"Here," Bella began, trying to think of some way to make this better, "Why don't you come with me and we'll take a look around. We can find you something to eat and if you want we can even try some of the rides." She took in the child's full appearance now, and her brow creased as she thought about what time or place the little girl might be from. It made her mad to think that whoever had taken them had pulled the child from her home without anyone to watch over her. "Or, is there someone you came here with?" She asked, trying to calm her anger, hoping the poor little child wasn't alone. "We can look for them if there is, and if not you can hang out with me, okay?" She extended a hand to the frail looking child. She couldn't imagine how scared she must because of all the changing world around her. "I'm Bella, by the way." She added, in case the little girl had been taught not to go anywhere with strangers.

Bella didn't have to offer a hug, Claudia ran the little distance forward and hugged her tightly, making little sobbing sounds against her neck. Really, she took a deep breath, inhaling the sweet scent of the girl. She'd originally planned to play, let Bella take her places and buy her things, as she often did, but as she listened to the hypnotic heart of the warm body in her grip, she abandoned that plan.

Nuzzling into the pale neck of her prey, she smiled a sweet smile that was far too cruel for the delicate pink lips it was on. If only Bella could have seen it, she might have had the slightest warning. But alas, it was too late. In a voice that was suddenly not upset at all, in fact, it was more than pleased, she whispered. "No, Bella. I'm all alone."

In a flash, she sunk deadly little fangs into the welcoming neck, holding Bella still with more strength than she should have possessed. She drunk greedily, but savoured the delicacy that was this girl's blood. She had always had her Father's expensive taste.

Bella, hadn't really been offering a hug, more trying to get on the same level as the little girl, but she wasn't so cold-hearted that she'd refuse the child she'd just upset. Instead she tentatively wrapped her arms around her in response and patted her back reassuringly, feeling another swell of anger that such a small child had been taken here and left alone and defenseless.

. It took her a moment to realize the uncomfortable pinch at her neck wasn't in her head. It grew into a sharp sensation of pain that made her eyes widen and a startled yelp escape her lips. She automatically threw her arm back to check on the source of the pain, only to run into the little girl's head. She tried to pull back, to lean away to check her neck, but the child's arms were suddenly vice-like and her already wide eyes opened wider in the shock as she realized she couldn't pull away. The sensations at he neck were getting more intense, sharper in focus as everything else seemed to blur a little at the edges. She was paralyzed with shock and fear for a moment. This small child was nothing of the sort! A scream finally broke from her, loud and shrill as she tried desperately to pry the small strong person from her. "Help!" She added, "Get her off!"

Carlisle was coming back from hunting when he heard an obtusely familiar voice calling for help. He didn't know where he'd heard it before, and perhaps he hadn't, only familiar in the retelling, but it didn't matter. He saw the child, and the young woman, locked in an embrace that was all together unnatural, and for just a moment, his chest clenched with fear. An immortal child. Every vampire he knew dreaded that sight, dreaded the implications of what was before him. And then he remembered what Edward had told him, and he knew those curls.

Claudia.

Bella's begging to be delivered had scarcely left her lips before Carlisle was at her side. His hands, surprisingly gentle despite his great strength, cupped the sides of Claudia's head, removing her fangs from the human girl's throat without tearing it open, and pulled her away. All of this happened so quickly that, before Bella's body could crumble, as honestly, he expected it to do, Carlisle was there with an arm around her waist, putting himself between the little vampire and her intended meal.

"You can't kill here, little one," he said in a calm, strong voice, refusing to get rilled up by what had happened. That would serve no one well.

The blood had all of Claudia's attention. It was amazing, sweeter than anything she'd ever tasted, and after days without feeding, even the simple notion that she wasn't to kill was forgotten.

That was, until she was pulled away. Though the hands were gentle, she felt as if she was being wrenched. She screamed, kicking hard enough to throw herself to the ground. It didn't take long for her to register who the culprit was, who had disturbed her meal. It was another vampire. No mortal could have had that gentle strength, or even such a voice, such a scent, such a pale appearance. He was blond and handsome and she might have immediately liked him, in other circumstances.

Blue eyes glared sharp daggers as she stood, and she gave a scream of frustration, storming closer. Oh yes, Claudia was calm and mature. Until she didn't get something she wanted. "Why can't I? What right have you to stop me? Why do you stop me? You're one of us!" She was purely outraged. Lestat had never stopped her. Louis had never stopped her. And she had found another vampire, only to have them take away her prey? "She's mine, I found her first!"

But this other vampire didn't even seem to intend to feed on Bella. It was disgusting! He was protecting a mortal! "Is she your lover? Your ward? What meaning has she to you?" As far as Bella went, Claudia didn't even bother to look at her. She was simply an object, food, in her mind, and food that had been denied her, no less.

Everything happened so fast, that even if she had known it was coming, she wouldn't have been able to process it. One moment she was calling for help, the next there was something slipping between her throat and the vampire at her neck. The girl was pulled back and away with such suddenness that it took her breath away—or it would have had Bella not exerted it all on screaming for help. She didn't even have time to stop her struggling away from the tiny monster, and would have fallen had there not already been an arm there to catch her. She blinked, dazed and confused when everything finished, and looked up with wide, bewildered eyes, at her savior. The cool air was made sharp against the slick spittle and blood covered wound of her neck, and her hand instantly went to cover it. It wouldn't have been so bad if she'd held still, but because she'd tried to free herself, the wound was slightly more severe than a simple set of two neat puncture wounds, and thus continued to bleed as she held her hand to it. As shocked as she was, the smell of her own blood mixed with the cool air around her, and turned her stomach when she smelled it filling her short shallow breaths. This sent her head reeling slightly, and only added to the already terrible situation. She had to force herself to inhale through her mouth, something that didn't help her panic. It was all so distracting that she didn't even realize Carlisle had spoken to the girl until she heard that horrible little voice again, and she gripped onto Carlisle instinctively, her head ducking further behind him.

Instincts aside, things weren't adding up for Bella, and the sound of the small child sent a jolt through her, causing her panic stricken limbs to move. She tried to scramble up onto her feet with even less grace than she could normally muster, slipping more than anything before she got her feet under her properly. She had been saved, yes, but for how long? The only thing her mind could get a solid grip on was that she had to get out of there, but the man's hold on her waist was making that difficult. She looked up at him again, his serene face ill fitting for the situation. It didn't make sense. None of this made sense, and it made her heart pound so hard that it was all she could hear now. She looked at his pale white skin, and it too was alarming. She forced herself to think, wanting nothing but escape, and finally forced herself up onto her feet, moving out of his hold and away. It should have been something easy, he hadn't been holding her as tightly as she'd first perceived, but her mind couldn't focus, and her limbs weren't working right, and all she could think was 'Run away'. Her feet managed 'back away slowly' instead, trying to watch the pair as she retreated, while still managing to get away.

An immortal child pitching a fit. Honestly, that was what was going on here, and Carlisle kept calm as Claudia got out her tantrum. "Because there are other ways to survive in this life," he told her with a sort of serene calm that only Carlisle could pull off, because it was so much a part of him. He was good at this life, great at it, in fact, and though he could smell Bella's free-flowing blood, rich and heady, it did nothing save remind him that she'd have to be tended to, immediately, if she didn't want to end up bleeding out, or getting infected. "There are other ways, and yes, I'll stand protector for her," he assured the little vampire, his hold on Bella loose enough for her to get out of, if she wished, as apparently she did.

And that split his attention. "Bella, please," he called, his calm voice tinged with a bit of insistence. "Stay with me where you're safe." He had every reason to think that if he let Bella go on her own, not only was she at risk from her injuries, but there was a good chance that Claudia would find her again the moment his back was turned.

He didn't know Bella personally, of course, but that didn't stop Carlisle from wanting - nay, needing - to protect her. He could only thank God that Edward was sufficently distracted with Juniper, as the scent of Bella's blood did horrible things to the boy when it was safely inside her body. "She is the daughter of my friend, and therefore my responsibility," he told Claudia. "Please, Bella, for Charlie's sake, come back here," he begged, still not taking his eyes off the vampire in front of him.
