The little vampiress was out. She'd been so lost when she had first come, that after Faith left, she'd mostly hid in her room, quietly withdrawn in grief. Faith's reassurance that she would come had been comforting, but only so much. Loneliness was still loneliness, and sadness still sadness, and hope could perhaps bend them to seem less heavy on her heart, but never extinguish them completely. However, Claudia was first and foremost, and always had been, for all of the sixty-five years that she could remember, a vampire. She needed blood like nothing else, and the lights and music and warm laughter of mortals outside her window were too inviting to be dismissed. Tonight, she would hunt, and perhaps, it would brighten her mood.

Her step on the streets of the city was light, and she could not help but smile widely at the beautiful colours. These machines were strange to her, but the spirit was similar enough to the Carnival of her time (especially with the masque having happened so soon beforehand), that she simply found them rich and wonderful. Of course, part of it was an act. As she walked, she was a beautiful, wide-eyed child, full of the innocence and lost wonder of youth. She decided that if the Sparkly King wished her to have fun, she would. Tonight, not only would she hunt, but she would play. There were many prizes and gifts that she would have, before the night was over. Oh yes. If this was indeed an amusement park, she would be amused.

Her cape pillowed lightly in the crisp night air as she took in the sights, keeping her eye open for anyone that seemed interesting and vulnerable enough. When she did find someone, her features turned to soft concern, a pout threatening to form on her lips as she tugged gently on their clothes. "Excuse me," she said softly, the pale child looking up from long, doll eyelashes. "Why did the city change?" Oh yes. Sister Death was at work once again.

An immortal child pitching a fit. Honestly, that was what was going on here, and Carlisle kept calm as Claudia got out her tantrum. "Because there are other ways to survive in this life," he told her with a sort of serene calm that only Carlisle could pull off, because it was so much a part of him. He was good at this life, great at it, in fact, and though he could smell Bella's free-flowing blood, rich and heady, it did nothing save remind him that she'd have to be tended to, immediately, if she didn't want to end up bleeding out, or getting infected. "There are other ways, and yes, I'll stand protector for her," he assured the little vampire, his hold on Bella loose enough for her to get out of, if she wished, as apparently she did.

And that split his attention. "Bella, please," he called, his calm voice tinged with a bit of insistence. "Stay with me where you're safe." He had every reason to think that if he let Bella go on her own, not only was she at risk from her injuries, but there was a good chance that Claudia would find her again the moment his back was turned.

He didn't know Bella personally, of course, but that didn't stop Carlisle from wanting - nay, needing - to protect her. He could only thank God that Edward was sufficently distracted with Juniper, as the scent of Bella's blood did horrible things to the boy when it was safely inside her body. "She is the daughter of my friend, and therefore my responsibility," he told Claudia. "Please, Bella, for Charlie's sake, come back here," he begged, still not taking his eyes off the vampire in front of him.
