WHO: Caspian and Gabrielle
WHEN: Day 5, breakfast time
WHAT: Fooooood
WHERE: One of the supper tents
RATING: PG
STATUS: Complete

After meeting up with and setting straight Miss Bella Swan, Caspian decided that it was time for some food. He felt bad leaving her alone, but after all, if he hadn't been expecting to be transported somewhere, he probably would have needed a moment as well. But as it was, Caspian was perfectly at home in the City. It reminded him of the street fairs in Calormen, but without the slave trade, which was a blessing. He'd had enough fun breaking that up once, thank you very much. He still hadn't figured out his purpose in this land, and was starting to think that, with the many varied and well-suited people in the land, he didn't have much of one. They were all in the same boat, as it were. Maybe the purpose was to simply live his life.

And living included eating.

Part of Caspian wondered at the necessity, given that he was technically dead, but his stomach ruled out that option for him very quickly, sitting up and demanding to be noticed. So, he headed down to one of the supper tents to find something to eat. Not long later, he was sitting at one end of a long bench table, with a plate of bread, cheese and fruit in front of him, and a goblet of water next to that, chewing happily. He was beginning to discover that, with the transformation of his body to its younger years, his mind was heading in that direction as well. Which explained the fact that he seemed to eat like a teenager with a hollow leg.

Noticing someone looking for a seat, Caspian smiled, swallowed, and stood, giving a half bow in greeting. "You're more than welcome at this table," he offered.

The subject of dead spouses was far too depressing, really, for such a lovely day. They had both expressed sympathy, and that was about as far as it could go. After all, talking about it, thinking about it, couldn't bring either her husband or Caspian's wife back from the dead. So she just squeezed his fingers lightly, and allowed the conversation to move to more cheerful places.

"Oh, I see." She smiled and nodded. "It's good that you kept the child away. I wish you could have all been kept away from fighting." Though she was not the naive child she had once been, and she knew that sometimes fighting was a necessary evil, that didn't change her opinion that it still was just that, evil.

The bard gasped softly and then pointed, delight and wonder on her face, as she saw some dancers moving gracefully through a mideval dance. "Oh, that looks fun! Do you want to try?"

"So do I. But without it, Narnia would have never been restored, I can promise you that," he said, shaking his head and frowning a bit. The necessity of war bothered him, even though - or maybe because - he'd been raised for so long to be the leader of an army, not the ruler of a land. "Still, there is peace now, and we remember the darker days and vow to never repeat them."

Following the graceful line of her finger toward the dancers with his eyes, Caspian smiled softly, watching them for a moment. "That's not unlike a favourite dance in the Lone Islands," he finally said with a barked laugh.

"M'lady," he bowed with a little smile playing over his lips, and then took her hand in his, the other going to her waist, bounding over to join the dancers in their circle.

Gabrielle smiled at him. "Oh, I know. So many tyrants were pulled from power because of fighting, so many wars stopped. I guess some people are always going to fight, and someone has to protect people from those guys." It was the way the world was, she figured. And maybe this one too, though it hadn't been so far, she was ready in case that changed.

But that day wouldn't be today. Apparently, today was for dancing. She was delighted when he claimed that he knew a dance similar to the one that they were watching. "I've never seen anything like it, but I pick up quickly." It seemed simple enough, none of the steps seemed difficult.

Her delight, however, was pushed to whole new levels as he took her hand and her waist. "Thank you, kind sir!" She twinkled up at him, rested a hand on his shoulder, and emulated the pose that the other dancers were taking. The steps were new, but not difficult, and she picked them up fairly quickly. At least, enough to not step all over his feet.

Caspian supposed that, talking animals aside, his world wasn't too far unlike the worlds that lay outside it. People still loved music, they still liked dancing, and any excuse to be in close quarters with a pretty lady was one to be taken up willingly.

She was a good dancer, and true to her word, she picked up the steps quickly. Caspian grinned as they moved around with the other dancers, switching partners as the turns called for it, and always coming back to Gabrielle with a genuine happiness to see her.

Finally, the dance ended, and Caspian twirled her one more time before bringing her back in against his chest, smiling. "Well that was a time! You're a very graceful dancer, m'lady," he praised, dropping one hand from her waist and turning the other in his, linking their fingers as he lead her over to a refreshment table. He got them both some water from the pitchers provided, and toasted her silently before taking a sip of his. "Anything else you'd like to do?" he asked, looking around.

By the end of the energetic dance, Gabrielle was flushed with happiness, slightly out of breath, and just basically content with the world. She liked dancing a lot, enough that it irritated Xena to no end sometimes. Though her friend would sometimes even dance with her, it wasn't the same as dancing with someone who actually wanted to be there.

"Thank you! That was fun." She allowed herself to be led to the table and accepted the water. "You were amazing." The bard returned the toast, then leaned against the table, green eyes bright as she scanned the various activities around.

"I really don't know. There's so much to do here." She turned to him, speaking in a sort of confessional manner. "To be honest, I'm not used to having this much spare time. On my own world, I was always going from one thing to the next. Even now, I'm sort of waiting for something crazy to happen, some monster I'll have to fight." She grinned at him. "Is there anything you'd like to do?" She sipped water slowly, her breathing gradually settling down to normal.

Caspian laughed and nodded, taking another sip of his water before he spoke. "I know exactly what you mean," he admitted. "When I was younger, it was one fight after another. And then being king..." he trailed off and shook his head, running a hand through his long black hair, letting out a sigh. "One audience after another. Treaties to plan, wars to fight, messengers to send and see..." Part of him was glad it was all over and done with. It made him tired just thinking about it.

"You know...there is something," he admitted, and then set down his glass and waited for her to finish with her own. Then he lead her away from the stands and the lessons, away from the hustle and the bustle.

Taking off his cloak, Caspian spread it out on the grass and then sat down, extending a hand to help her if she needed it before laying back and closing his eyes. "I haven't had time to just lay in the sun since I was...fourteen years old," he said with a quiet little chuckle. "I used to fall asleep in the castle gardens and not wake up until the sun drew shadows against the turrets."

Gabrielle nodded, and beamed at him. "Your world must be a very amazing place, with someone like you as a king." He seemed to share many of her attitudes about fighting, and most people who fought thought that she was a little odd for not really liking it. How could she do something like fighting without really liking it? It seemed like it would be impossible, even to her, sometimes.

Intriuged, she quickly finished her water and set the cup down, nodding that she was ready to follow him. She had no idea where they were going, but had a very active element of curiousity in her nature, so she was eager to find out. He led her away from all the stuff that was happening, so when he stopped, she looked at him quizzically.

He explained soon enough though, and she smiled at him. Accepting his hand, she sunk down onto his cloak, sitting and watching him with her legs tucked off to the side demurely. "I know the feeling. It wouldn't surprise me at all if some huge monster come from out of nowhere." Annoyed, but not surprised. "My home was very quiet, not much more than a tiny village, but there was tons of work to do, for both Lila, my sister, and me." She looked at him curiously. "Do you have any siblings, Caspian?"

He liked that she thought so, and his smile said that without him having to, as Caspian thought it might be a bit egotistical, to admit just how much her praise pleased him. Laying there in the sun, with Gabrielle at his side, was the best thing he'd done all day, and Caspian kept his eyes closed, listening to her speak, trying to picture the things she was - and had been - speaking of.

"No, just myself," he said with a small shake of his head. "My mother died bringing me into the world, and my father was murdered not long after," he explained. "I would have liked to have had siblings, life was rather lonely as a child." He smiled faintly, remembering the days when he'd tried to make the castle animals speak to him, just so he could have a friend.

Opening one eye, Caspian found Gabrielle's hand and lifted it to his chest, idly playing with her fingers, investigating the shape of them with his rather rough ones. "What sort of things did you do as a child?" he asked quietly, his eyes closed again and a little yawn tapering off the end of the question.

Sympathy once more touched her features. She had seen the way it had hurt people to not have their families with them more than once. And yet, it hadn't seemed to make it bitter, like it had so many people she'd known. Maybe it had something to do with how young he'd been. Either way? It impressed her, much as everything she'd heard from him had.

"Lila annoyed me sometimes, but I loved her." She smiled fondly, remembering her little sister. "She always used to tag along with me and my friends when I went out. But now, I... I worry about how she's doing, since I'm here." Although, she doubted that Lila even knew she was gone yet. After all, it had only been a short time, really.

As her hand was shifted, Gabrielle smiled slightly down at Caspian. This was definitely pleasant, she decided. Her own fingers were small and slender, but bore the callouses of practice with weaponry, and she didn't mind the roughness of his hands. Noticing that he was tired, she made her voice soothing. If he needed sleep, she would help. "Fishing, cleaning, all the normal things, I guess." She grinned. "I used to sneak off into the woods, though, and pretend I was on an adventure. But, at the end of the day, my favorite thing to do was to read."

Caspian smiled softly. "I think, that if we had been children together, I would have tugged your curls," he admitted. Then he smirked a bit. "And then beat up any other lad that so much as tried."

He listened to her, and despite the fact that he felt it was unendingly rude, started to drift due to the sound of her voice alone. She had a very soothing presence, after all, and he'd had his fair share of anxious nights of late. He was a tired young man.

"What sort of books?" he asked sleepily, and before she was done answering that question, no doubt, Caspian would be fast asleep.

Gabrielle laughed, but kept it soft so that she didn't wake him up from his drowsy state. "Perdicas would have loved you, then. You could have pulled my hair together." Her former husband had been big on that sort of stuff. "Either that or you would have ended up fighting all the time."

With her free hand, she reached out to gently touch his forehead, stroking him in a soothing way. Yes, it was a bit forward, but it seemed like the right thing to do, anyway. And the poor man obviously needed the sleep, so if she could help, she was all into it.

"Oh, anything, really. Maps, old stories, star charts..." She watched him as his eyes started to drift closed. "I read about Gods and Goddesses, and the things they did. Morpheus is the God of Dreams..." As she spoke softly, telling a myth of the God of sleep, she watched as he gave in to that same God and fell into a deep sleep.
