The First Official Day As Queen
It was the sunlight streaming through the windows that woke her, along with the sound of birds chittering away on the roof. Normal sounds. Proof of life sounds. Sounds she still marveled at after a hundred years of missing them. Without any sounds of activity coming from downstairs, Zelda was content to remain in bed, eyes closed against the red warmth of the sunbeams on her lids, listening to the birds.

She wasn't going to stay there all day, but just a few more minutes of enjoying the peace. Not quiet, but peace.

After a little bit longer, Zelda reluctantly pushed back the blankets and stood, stretching as she yawned. She looked over the railing down into the common room, and immediately saw what looked to be a note.

Written on napery. Oops. They'd need to get more paper soon.

"Link?" she called out, listening for him. With no response, she made her way downstairs and read the scribbling. "Hmm. All right." She frowned a bit at the part about paying Pruce back. They'd need to figure out how to put rupees in her own pocket if she were to do things like this on a semi-regular basis. Or maybe just make and use royal vouchers as they did in the old days, and Link would go around settling the accounts when the day was over.

She looked out the window toward the bridge, and there was no sign of anyone, not yet. The men must still be tending to their own business, which was fine by her. She needed time to get dressed anyway.

Zelda went back up the stairs and opened the trunk, looking at the meager choices she had. All pants and blouses, mostly identical save for color variations. She put on dark blue pants and a white and blue blouse to go with her new circlet, then sat on the bed to brush out her hair, pulling strands from the front toward the back into a ponytail and braiding it down her back, leaving most of her hair free. Once done, she donned the circlet, then her boots.

Not knowing what time people would show up to work on the bridge, and being hungry at that moment, Zelda tucked the napery note in her pocket then left the house, carefully stepping over the loose planks, and made her way to Pruce's shop.

"Good morning," she said as she entered. "Link's apparently left me to my own devices today, and left me this." She pulled the napery out of her pocket and handed it to Pruce, smiling. "So what's on the menu?"

It wasn't entirely easy to hear them over the complaints gurgling up from the creek below as the water gushed and twisted around the bends and over rocks and fallen branches. But she could make out just enough to follow what was being said, especially with Nack's hand gestures.

She clasped her hands together, the fictitious attitude replaced by a real one as her eyes lit up. "Oh? But definitely? That would be delightful! I did so love taking breakfast out on my balcony when I lived in the castle, and that would be a good way to shield the sun and more likely the rain! If we especially used re-purposed wood, it would be even harder for anyone to complain about it!"

"As long as you keep a somewhat firm hand on Bolson but otherwise let him have fun designing one, you'll have the best gazebo seen in the last couple centuries," Dantz said. "Bolson can go a bit overboard if he's left to his own devices, but point him in the direction you want him to head, and he makes some pretty nice stuff."

Thadd looked up at the house. "Give him some room, he might outdo himself if you tell him you want that house to look like a castle without being too crazy."

"I don't want to get too fancy over the rest of you," Zelda said. "I know I'm the queen, and I do intend to have the castle restored, but it just feels wrong to have the house done up too grand in comparison to the other houses. I'm still one of you. And I don't want the house to collapse under the weight."

She hesitated. "But having a small balcony on the roof would be a lovely addition, as I do so miss mine."

The three men exchanged a look at the 'still one of you' bit. That went farther in their minds to earn their respect than just about anything else. To have the wealth and history that she did, and she still wanted to live just like the rest of them?

"I'm beginning to see why Tokk admired her so much," Thadd said quietly to Dantz.

"Same here," Dantz agreed, then looked up at the house in question, squinting against the sun at it. "Well, I can't say you're the only one who ever wanted a balcony around here," he said, raising his voice so the queen could hear him. "But nobody's ever felt it was worth it to alter the buildings. But I guess if you're having Bolson doing something around here already, wouldn't hurt to ask him if he has any ideas on how to do it." He looked back at her. "He might be pricey though. I think you'll be looking at a lotta stone working, and that's not cheap or easy."

"Link can afford it. The question is can I talk him into it?" She looked at the small lean-to of an animal shelter. "Also, I'd like reuseable wood to be able to restore that animal shelter. I need a horse for short travel distances, and either that thing is getting repaired and used, or torn down and out of the way."

She looked up at the sun then at the men. "That's enough chatter. I'll see about getting some lunch sent to you, and the bridge is looking magnificent. Thank you for all your hard work."

Thadd tipped his hat. "Any time-" he tripped briefly, his automatic response to be 'ma'am,' but changing course quickly to "-Your Majesty."

"We'd be much obliged about that meal," Dantz said.

Zelda returned to Sophie's shop, expecting to find Ivee there as well, knocking on the door and cautiously opening it. "Hello? T'is but I, the queen?"

Seldon was still minding the counter, and surrendered to the fact that he'd be doing that all day, so he'd pulled up a stool behind the counter and started doodling for want of anything mentally stimulating to do. Usually just being out in the sun was enough to keep him entertained, but being trapped inside made him stir crazy.

He looked up at the knock, wondering who out there would knock on a store's door, then noticed the queen seconds before she spoke up.

"Come on in," he said, putting down his pencil. "No need to knock on the door of a store during business hours. The girls are back in Sophie's work room, if you're looking for them."

"I didn't want to startle Sophie," Zelda said. "Do you have any suggestions what to do about getting lunch out to the men working on the bridge?"

Seldon couldn't help but smile that the queen was already figuring out how to handle his daughter's oddities. But she asked a question, and that required attention and a bit of thought. "Guess it is going on lunch time, isn't it? Ivee's already going to be cooking for the lot of us here, it seems a bit unfair to dump more on her head. If you can convince Ivee to watch the front for me, I can run over to Clavia's, ask her to do it. Or we can find some way of making it up to Ivee to ask her."

"I can watch the front and call Ivee up if there's something I can't handle while you go talk to Clavia?" Zelda suggested. "Or better yet, I could go speak with Clavia, since I'm the one arranging lunch, and you know more about the running the shop."

"I think that second option would work better," Seldon agreed. "I wouldn't want you to feel on the spot if a customer came in while I was away, by some strange chance. Want me to tell the girls you'll be back in a few minutes, then?"

"I'll go tell them, in case Sophie needs to snag me for another measurement really quick before I disappear again. They're back here, you say?" Zelda wandered toward the back room and again knocked quietly. "Your queen has returned," she announced as she carefully opened the door.

If Ivee hadn't been there, keeping Sophie from becoming so totally engrossed in her work that the outside world ceased to exist entirely, Sophie might've jumped at the knock.

Not willing to miss a stitch, she didn't look up from her sewing machine as she greeted the queen. "Welcome back. I only have one sleeve done on this first dress, I'm working on the second right now."

Ivee was standing by the door, so she saw the queen before she was even fully in the room. "How's the bridge coming along?"

"It should be done by dinner, which brings me to why I'm here. Lunch. I'm about to go talk to Clavia about providing the men with food," Zelda said as she wandered over to study Sophie's work without looming over her too much. "I wanted to check in and make sure you didn't need me for anything before I ducked out again?"
