The First Official Day As Queen
It was the sunlight streaming through the windows that woke her, along with the sound of birds chittering away on the roof. Normal sounds. Proof of life sounds. Sounds she still marveled at after a hundred years of missing them. Without any sounds of activity coming from downstairs, Zelda was content to remain in bed, eyes closed against the red warmth of the sunbeams on her lids, listening to the birds.

She wasn't going to stay there all day, but just a few more minutes of enjoying the peace. Not quiet, but peace.

After a little bit longer, Zelda reluctantly pushed back the blankets and stood, stretching as she yawned. She looked over the railing down into the common room, and immediately saw what looked to be a note.

Written on napery. Oops. They'd need to get more paper soon.

"Link?" she called out, listening for him. With no response, she made her way downstairs and read the scribbling. "Hmm. All right." She frowned a bit at the part about paying Pruce back. They'd need to figure out how to put rupees in her own pocket if she were to do things like this on a semi-regular basis. Or maybe just make and use royal vouchers as they did in the old days, and Link would go around settling the accounts when the day was over.

She looked out the window toward the bridge, and there was no sign of anyone, not yet. The men must still be tending to their own business, which was fine by her. She needed time to get dressed anyway.

Zelda went back up the stairs and opened the trunk, looking at the meager choices she had. All pants and blouses, mostly identical save for color variations. She put on dark blue pants and a white and blue blouse to go with her new circlet, then sat on the bed to brush out her hair, pulling strands from the front toward the back into a ponytail and braiding it down her back, leaving most of her hair free. Once done, she donned the circlet, then her boots.

Not knowing what time people would show up to work on the bridge, and being hungry at that moment, Zelda tucked the napery note in her pocket then left the house, carefully stepping over the loose planks, and made her way to Pruce's shop.

"Good morning," she said as she entered. "Link's apparently left me to my own devices today, and left me this." She pulled the napery out of her pocket and handed it to Pruce, smiling. "So what's on the menu?"

"Hm? Oh. Yes. Yes, I'm- I'm quite all right. I'm speaking with Link, actually. A long story. Difficult to explain. Or rather just confusing."

I'll let you pick up those clothes. If they don't fit right, Sophie can alter them, Zelda thought. And don't worry about the journals. I have ideas on that.

Ivee raised her eyebrows, though the queen had said there was a way to contact Link, so the answer wasn't as much of a surprise as it might've been. "If he's got time while he's out, you may want to ask him about getting pictures for Sophie," she said. "The sooner she knows what material to ask him about, the sooner he can get that out of the way and worry about something other than being a gopher."

She waved her father's unspoken-but-plainly-obvious-on-his-face question off. He'll get his explanation in a minute.

"Oh, that's right. I'll do that," Zelda said. Could you get pictures of these designs and areas for Sophie while you're at it, please? she asked, and listed off what the women had discussed.

Link stared blankly in front of him as the Sword relayed a veritable laundry list of pictures needed for clothes.

Was she kidding? Were clothes really tha-

Of course they were. Appearances, diplomatic stuff. They were officially back to civilization. That was going to take a little getting used to. The job of Wandering Swordsman didn't have much in the way of a dress code beyond 'functional.'

Well, he'd been in the royal guard for a few years before he was assigned to Zelda personally, he still remembered how important appearances were when acting in official capacity. It just was going to take some time to switch back to that mindset.

He poked at his food again, shaking his head slightly in fond amusement. "I'll get those pictures for her." He sighed as something else occurred to him. "I'm going to guess that Sophie doesn't have an abundance of jewelry and make up and hair clips hiding in the back of the store. Does she need any of that? I'm going to be in Gerudo Town, I may as well look for that if it's needed."

He waited silently, focusing on eating while he waited for the Sword to relay that and get an answer.

You'd be right on that count, Zelda said, and rattled off the gemstone requirements for the different outfits. And don't worry too much about going back to the old diplomatic ways. We won't have the same people in charge, but the commoners we know now, and that will be different. There does need to be some balance, but even I know that we can't have people like there were before. There needs to be change and it needs to be for the better.

Link stared at the Sword when she relayed Zelda's answer, wondering if Zelda were somehow outright reading his own mind, rather than going through the intermediary.

Well, he had made enough noises of disdain for the old ruling class, it wasn't a hard conclusion for her to come to that he would be less than enthused about her requests. There was that fond exasperation again. "All right, all right," he said softly. "Well, I'm pretty sure Isha will have ideas about jewelry, and if it comes to it, I'll ask Riju about the rest. Does she have any preferences on any of it, or do we trust Riju's judgement?"

Of all the things he never imagined himself asking about...

For now, we'll trust Riju's judgement. We haven't discussed much in the way of jewelry, mostly just gems themselves to embellish the clothes. We've been talking about keeping Hylian designs while paying homage to the flavors of the nations I'll be visiting, within reason.

"The gemstones are for enchanting, right?" he asked the Sword- Zelda had tossed a lot of information at them about stuff that was normally nothing he put a lot of thought into. "I'll be taking stuff to Cotera, won't I?"

Very likely, the Sword agreed. I believe consulting with the Great Fairy may be a bit premature, as they all work with finished clothing.

Link made a vague noise of acknowledgment. "I know, but planning ahead's been the only thing keeping me from losing direction too much." Not that he'd needed to say that, the Sword knew that, and had been right there with him for the last five months or so of the fight that he was still having a bit of trouble processing as over.

"Well, I guess I get to give Riju an entertaining visit," he said, finishing off the last of his food. "Tell Zelda I'll be home later with that stuff. Just as long as she knows that she doesn't get to practice using any of it on me. I know she never had to do any of that herself, she probably-"

He cut himself off, getting quiet a moment. "Actually, that's a good idea, ask her if she even knows how to use any of it, or if I get to recruit help for her."

The Sword made a point of not commenting on the thought that hadn't fully solidified itself in the back of Link's mind, kept it locked away where the queen could not pick it up by accident, though the Sword knew that if the queen were to press the issue, the power of the Triforce of Wisdom was greater than her own; she would not be able to stop the probing.

Master Link wishes to know if he will be needing to request assistance for you for the application of any of these accessories. He believes he recalls that you had servants for such things, and he is quite firm that he is not available for practicing on.

She may have not made any effort to hide her own amusement at the idea of Master Link being subjected to such feminine attentions. That wasn't a very nice amusement to have, after all.

Well, he could always drag home a monster for practice, something we won't miss?" Zelda asked.

Link didn't dignify that at first, getting up and strapping the Sword back onto his back, before taking his plate and fork to the wash basin while he decided what a good response here would be.

"I don't think she wants to have anything near her that picks its own nose," he finally said in a dry tone.

Should I convey that? the Sword asked.

He glanced back at it. "You know, there's such a thing as too innocent."

While she didn't give him a mental picture of her face, the Sword still managed to convey that amused smile that she graced him with far more than she had her first master. In her defense, she hadn't learned and developed human emotions by the time they had parted ways.

Link grabbed a towel and dried his plate, thinking. He knew of someone who could and potentially would be able to help Zelda, at least with the subject of her hair, but suggesting her and then asking her to would close a door on him.

If I may, Master Link, the Sword said, perhaps the fact that Miss Zumi has crossed your mind without a more explicit prompting suggests that you were wanting a reason to say no?

"You mean one that had nothing to do with that damned social class of hers?" Link asked, then sighed, putting the plate and fork away in the Slate's inventory. "Tell her that I think I know of someone who can help, but it may take me a bit to track her down."

Understood, Master Link. The Sword directed her thought back to the queen. Master Link says that he has a better suggestion than a monster, though it may take some time to track her down. I suspect that he'd rather not have a creature that's known for picking its nose sitting at the dining table.

She paused and made a face, but quickly recovered. They sit at dining tables? That's a bit more credit than I was going to give them. I thought they just rooted around in the mud with less class than a pig.

Zelda smiled. When should we expect your return? The bridge is still out, but I'm in good company with my ladies at the moment. If I'm not in Pruce's shop, I'll be with Sophie.

Link sighed, thinking. "It depends on if I get stopped by someone to talk," he said. "I don't know how long it'll take with Riju, honestly, or how long it'll take to get to the other person. And if I'm going to Zora's Domain, I might get stopped by Sidon."

He paused, frowning. "Actually, go ahead and just assume by dinner time, but not likely any earlier. Bolson should be in Hateno by late tonight, so we'll probably spend the first part of the morning working out how the house can be altered in a way that's functional but won't offend whatever bizarre design sensibilities he has before we can get to Zora's Domain. I can let Dorephan know that when I'm there. If you get tired of being out and the bridge is done before I get home, start figuring out what you have in there that you don't want sawdust on and move it into the washroom, if you can. Otherwise, we'll do that tonight after dinner."

Sigh. "Just don't try to move things that are too heavy or unwieldy for you. I know you're stubborn as a mule about things when you want to be."

Yes, Mister Bossy Zelda said to that last bit, sighing. I think I know what my limits are. Trust me a bit there. So you'll be back by dinner? Good. Don't bother to buy food supplies from Pruce, I've taken care of that already.

"Yes, ma'am," he said with a quiet laugh, already heading down the road back west to catch up to Zumi and Yammo again. "If I'm going to be later, I'll let you know before then. It honestly mostly depends on how long Riju takes to laugh at having a guy stroll into town and ask for make up advice."

Tell her I wish to meet her as soon as opportunity allows and establish trade between Hyrule and her country. And she's also the only female ruler close to my age. We need to gossip more.

Link rolled his eyes heavenward, shaking his head and resisting the urge to laugh. Women. If he didn't like them so much, he'd decide to take the 'bi' out of descriptions for himself and stick to his own side entirely.

"She's the only female ruler at all, but okay. I don't know how much a twelve year old and a seventeen year old have in common, but knock yourself out. Just as long as I don't have to sit there and listen until my eyes glaze over."

Probably make up. And jewelry. And hair accessories.

Where did his life decide to go down a path into Weird Land?

From Ivee and Pruce's side of this conversation, it was... interesting. The queen's expression kept changing, but she wasn't saying anything, and whatever Link was saying that she was responding to couldn't be heard on their end either. They could only guess.

Ivee had actually laughed at the odd face the queen had made at one point, and made note to ask what disgusting thing Link must've said to cause that one.

"I don't know what's going on," Ivee said in a hushed voice to her father, "but I wish this was a conversation I could be listening in on."

Pruce hadn't had any idea that there was any way to have a silent conversation with someone who had to be miles away, and was watching this unheard exchange with wide-eyed bewilderment, his chin resting on his hand and one eyebrow raised. This was going on so long that he worried that eyebrow would get stuck up there.

As the conversation ended, Zelda looked at them, pausing, taking in their expressions and laughed. "All right. What's the biggest question on each of your minds right now? We'll start with you, Ivee."

Ivee recoiled with a shudder, making a noise that was half laugh, half groan of revulsion. "Oh goddess, that's gross." She shook her head, trying to replace the grossed out feeling with more amusement. Laugh or focus on the gross.

Let's laugh instead.

"It figures a man would zero in on that."

Pruce didn't find the mental image any less gross than his daughter had, but his massive confusion over exactly what was going on outweighed both that and the mildly insulted feeling at Ivee's accusation of Link pointing out something so disgusting was due to his gender and not just being a little punk.

"So when do we get the answer to the obvious question of how on earth you were talking to someone miles away without making a sound?"
